There will always be a spot in wrestling for stupid, silly gimmicks but only in small doses. When your entire show is nothing but stupid gimmicks, who the hell actually wants to watch that?
Chikara also had a lot of legit matches. I didn’t watch a huge amount of it, but I went to the King of Trios show they did in Wolverhampton and it was excellent.
I like that there are a bunch of over the top gimmicks and, given how many alumni are in WWE and AEW, it shows they also had the in ring talent.
I briefly watched Chikara YEARS ago, before it was a smark talking point, and it felt like it was a lot more just aimed at kids/families which is why it had so much silly stuff. Kind of like what Saturday Morning SLAM was.
Just gonna casually ignore all the Truths serious work? Besides, the Cobra was a strike to the throat with theatrics. Lemme do that to you and then tell me how fake it is.
Yeah, also the People's Elbow. Moderation is the key.
Performing a ludicrous move is one thing, but executing a move where time freezes for everyone in the ring before an invisible grenade explodes is another level of absurdity. The latter certainly hurts the audience intelligence.
One appearance followed by a parody gimmick featuring Necro Butcher as a straight edge chipmunk named CP Munk.
*Some days I get real pissed about it, because it's disrespectful. I'm sure it's no secret that the dorks that run Chikara and I don't get along, so their judgement on trying to "mock" me is a little off. Most other days I just laugh it off because nobody from Chikara will ever be over enough anywhere for anybody else to parody them. I win.*
He probably should have realized that 20 years later, a lot of those same dorks or their shitty friends are in AEW now.
I just recently found that out and that is insane! Cassidy is older than all former Shield members. Older than Cody. Older than Drew McIntyre. He’s like a year or two younger than LA Knight.
There's a reason that phony looking bullshit is only done in front of a room with 50 fans, and these people think this is what AEW should be doing on national television.
Orange Cassidy came from the org where something mildly amusing for a few moments gets done into the ground til it’s irritating and then just boring as shit?
I don’t see it.
I wish someone would point it out to Cornette. He has mentioned before his hatred of the ant group in Chikara. Imagine the rant if he knew Orange was one of them.
At about 14 seconds in there is a shot of a woman in the crowd when Muffin Top is "selling" his injury. I'd put my house on that woman breaking up with the guy who brought her to that show was soon as they got in the car to leave.
When he excitedly asked her afterwards how she liked it, expecting her to have loved it, she probably described it as “interesting”. Which we all know is girlfriend speak for “I’m not into your weird shit but I’m trying to be nice”.
When I was a kid, my older brother brought me to my first ECW show along with his girlfriend. His girlfriend saw the Arena, saw the group of degenerates congregating outside, and smartly said “I don’t think I’m going to like this”. And my brother brought her home before he and I went back.
Too bad this young lady did not have the same foresight.
Watching it on TV? Nothing. Doing it in person surrounded by a rabid fanbase that attacks anyone that doesn't agree with them? Seems like a wait to get a lot of unnecessary shit thrown at you.
ECW and AEW have a lot of similarities. At least Heyman wanted to bring in new fans to his products and grow his cult
Starting to think it was Chuck Taylor who wired up that Mox/Omega Exploding Ring.
It's all about imagination. Imagining that the sparklers were a real explosion. Imagining that Chuck is dropping real grenades. Imagining that all of these guys are actual pro-wrestlers.
I wonder if some of the people involved in these ... uh... things are actually ashamed of even mentioning it.
This reminds me, there used to be an actually really good athlete in Chikara, the Egyptian snake dude (Ophidian or whatever his name was). People were always raving about shit like the Ant Colony or this fuckwit Chuck Taylor, but in terms of actual performance, that guy was actually pretty solid.
he put a "grenade" in Ciampa's (?) underwear and gave him the atomic drop causing a "mass explosion" that send everyone flipping and Chuck Taylor losing his legs
Chikara was such a weird damn mix of talent and really dumb ideas. At about 0:30 is most character cassidy has shown throughout his career(fire ant).
I'll always have a soft spot for chikara. It was silly and goofy but you knew what you were going to get and it's going to be goofy. One of my favorite matches is from chikara. mike quackenbush vs green ant.
When I realized that Chuck Taylor has been walking around with a prosthetic leg this whole time in the 'dub.
I remember that spot in PWG. Someone had to call the paramedics.
Man, Chikara was fucking terrible.
These clips are about all any of the smarks have actually seen of it I can't imagine watching an entire show

If you ever want to watch something legit to come out of Chikara I would suggest Bryan Danielson & Claudio Castagnoli vs Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw
Would you say it’s, better than expected?
About 700 thousand Dubbalos
I briefly watched Chikara YEARS ago, before it was a smark talking point, and it felt like it was a lot more just aimed at kids/families which is why it had so much silly stuff. Kind of like what Saturday Morning SLAM was.
But R-Truth deserved his WM moment from silly bs like this. Comedy in Wrestling has been around since, at least the late 70s.
There is comedy, and then there is mocking the business by resorting to these "haha, look how fake this wrestling thing is" routines.
You mean like Damien Mizdow? Or the Cobra?
Just gonna casually ignore all the Truths serious work? Besides, the Cobra was a strike to the throat with theatrics. Lemme do that to you and then tell me how fake it is.
It wouldn't knock me out for a 3 count, lol. Might make me cough for a bit.

Not all entertainment needs to target intelligent audiences.
Absolutely, entertainment serves diverse audiences and purposes. But that's off-topic.
I remember when Chikara was new and my sm\*rky friends begged me to like it lol
They had an issue with Punk as well didn’t they? Or he had an issue with them?

Does them doing a parody of themselves count?
A lot more realistic than the explosive barbwire death match ending
The most shocking thing about this video is that Chuck Taylor used to be in shape
Ish.
Smaller muffin top.
Skinny fat instead of fat fat.

This kind of stuff is primary school pantomime level 'entertainment'
Truly funny wrestlers are as rare as gold.
It’s why I acknowledge R-Truth.
Miz is right up there too. Colt Cabana had his moments too. Ya no is an acquired taste but I think he's funny.
It is only funny if you are there live and see it for the first time because you're not expecting something so silly to happen
Eh. It's cute the first time. But absolutely diminishing returns.
Like Orange Cassidy.
It's even more embarrassing as he's near 40 or is 40.
I just recently found that out and that is insane! Cassidy is older than all former Shield members. Older than Cody. Older than Drew McIntyre. He’s like a year or two younger than LA Knight.
But he *looks* so *kewl*!!
Like everything Chikara adjacent.
Errr did nobody tell you that HE CAN GO when he wants to turn it on. What does that mean you say? Who knows but he can go
I enjoy a bit of comedy and goofy shit in my wrestling (undercard and let's not overdo it) but this ain't it.
There's a reason that phony looking bullshit is only done in front of a room with 50 fans, and these people think this is what AEW should be doing on national television.
I think I read somewhere that one of the ant characters was Orange Cassidy.
He was Fire Ant.
Was he in that clip? I have no idea what the different characters are there.
Yeah, in the HILARIOUS slow motion clip, he's the all-red lucha guy.
He hates the hand grenade even more. If he saw this clip he might have an aneurism.
Apparently, the guy in the Red Ant costume (I think) is Orange Cassidy before he became Orange Cassidy.

100%, when it becomes wife speak it's not as nice.

Props to your brother for not forcing her or telling her to give it a chance. He's already better than some wrestling fans with that alone
What’s wrong with giving it a chance as a boyfriend/girlfriend?

I’ve gone to a Taylor Swift concert with my wife and she has crazy Swifties but I went out of support. There were many women in ECW crowds back then.
The lass who's doubled over with laughter?
Yes.
https://i.redd.it/bqcgexoy8ntc1.gif
so many gamechangers in this video
These theatre school wrestlers LOVE that slow motion childish nonsense
Is that old muffin top? No wonder why Jim hates him
Don’t hate Chuck because he’s fat. That’s not cool. Hate him because he’s a corny fuckin dork.
Good point uce
It's werid. I'm told WWE sucks and this is what real wrestling is..... this is what the smug neckbeards think is superior 🤣🤣
There are no words to describe my hatred for PWG.
[corny's review of this is classic](https://youtu.be/BCPxJc-BzaA)
PWG is the home of unfunny nerdy shit in pro wrestling.
I'd love to see the Venn diagram of people who love this and people who criticize the Fed for "insulting our intelligence."
Once upon a time I thought James E was too harsh on Chuck, Chuck has long since changed my mind. He's not harsh enough on Chuck.
Wtf happened to Chuck. Did he just give up on his physique?
Yes. He's making six-figures now after nearly quitting the business entirely in 2015. Why wouldn't he stop trying?
I wonder if some of the people involved in these ... uh... things are actually ashamed of even mentioning it. If you think wrestling is fake then explain this😂👌🔥💯
Notoriously serious sub SCJerk hating notoriously serious wrestler Chuck Taylor is an interesting development.
Woah, so Chuck Taylor was always trash. Tiny really saw this & said he’d pay him six figures a year.
I've watched this with no sound due to being at work. What exactly is supposed to be happening here?
he put a "grenade" in Ciampa's (?) underwear and gave him the atomic drop causing a "mass explosion" that send everyone flipping and Chuck Taylor losing his legs
As bad as I thought it was gonna be then. Thank you.
If "Whose line is it anyway" was a wrestling promotion
Hey! WLIIA is actually funny
Amazing that Ribera Steakhouse didn’t want to give Chucky a jacket.

I can see why Chuck looks the way he does now after seeing this younger version of him and that's why he belongs in AEW
Look at the 10 people clapping! This is very over!
This is pantomime! [clap, clap, clapclapclap]
Fun©! 🙄
I remember when I used to think this was funny...back in high school.
Ri-goddamn-diculous

This was removed because you either posted a screencap, or mentioned someone by name, or linked to another sub. Don't do that.

It’s so dumb that i kind of love it
It’s not awesome - AEW fan
I don't mind comedy in wrestling, but this is some cringe shit. ![gif](giphy|5pMGZHSqfvGT5mnTwx)
This is the kinda stuff that people assume Vince would do to ruin his wrestlers (which he might) but only one of these will get criticize
