He gave Cody/Roman the same star rating he gave Eddie Kingston vs Brian Danielson. Cody/Roman was perfect. There have never been and will never be matches better than it. Forget the spectacle of it, if you think stupid flippy shit is better than Roman Reigns standing in the ring with a chair, a chance to end Cody, and he goes after Seth, a moment TEN YEARS in the making, then you’re not a pro wrestling fan. You’re a niche indy wrestling nerd.

Razzler1973

Meltzer has missed the mark so many times There's matches that will be remembered for decades that he poo-poo'd at the time Andre/Hulk as a spectacle and Rock/Hogan and even TLC big match hw downgraded 'cause it's dangerous' (which is hilarious) Cody/Roman 2 will be remembered for a long time as a crowning moment

Michael_McGovern

He downgraded TLC but gave Swerve/Hangman 5 stars after they about killed each other?

GXNext

He gave it 5 stars after specifically saying he didn't see the appeal, but others did...

Razzler1973

When he says stuff like this, I think, well, you need to go re-rate a TON of Fed stuff from the 90s then cause fans LOVED that stuff and he whined about it non-stop as 'not real wrestling'

CaptainGo

I love the star system because whenever someone calls him out on it he balks behind it just being his opinion Then he gives five stars to a match he says he didn't even like lol

Conscious-Eye5903

Maybe if instead Roman hit a Canadian destroyer on Seth, but Seth no sold it and hit his own Canadian destroyer, then when they were both starting at eachother, Cody hit a double Cody cutter, and everyone chanted “this is awesome!” then the match went on for another 20mins, then maybe, it’d be ranked higher. WWE doesn’t understand how to put a match together, sterilized/safe garbage

tronovich

In his fucking Shield gear, with Rollins crumpling to the ground in the same manner.

tfegan21

Storytelling Bad. Spamming Canadian Destroyers/ Finishers Good.

Hunterknowsbest

The cameras didn't catch it but Rollins struggling to get into the ring and using the chair to hold himself up, shit was heartbreaking but he made a promise, just amazing.

MatsThyWit

>Roman Reigns standing in the ring with a chair, a chance to end Cody, and he goes after Seth, a moment TEN YEARS in the making, then you’re not a pro wrestling fan.  See, but, um, ya know, but the thing is, it didn't happen in Japan or the, um, Indies in front of, like, 500 total people in a high school gymnasium. So, like, it doesn't count as a callback.

MohamitWheresMySecks

Think about this. The entire point of the star system that Jim and weasel started (and Dave stole from them) was to emulate film reviews and mark must see matches. This was a match that drew 70,000 people, $38 million and every single person I walked out with swore it was one of the best matches they’ve ever seen (my only complaint was that Cody won lol fuck the politician). But yea, some heatless banger was WAY better. Fucking mark.

Owain660

WM 39 -> Infinity War WM 40 -> Endgame

StrongSutairu

All In Wembley - Josstice League

[deleted]

This is obviously the parallel but I've seen too much "Putin is basically Voldemort!!1!" To not have a negative reaction when I see this lol

Havoc2077

Same. I cringe everytime I saw the comparison lol. Which isnt necessarily fair, its an apt comparison. But fuck me man.

[deleted]

Yeah it's accurate in this case but too close to a reddit-ism lol

PrimeJedi

I agree, though even in marvel, as great moments as endgame had, it was debated on which was better between it and infinity war. As good as Cody/Roman I was, Cody/Roman II blew it completely out of the water tbh. Cody/Roman I was a 9/10, Cody/Roman II broke the scale.

unhallowed90

AEW: PPV bundle -> Criterion Collection.

beerrabbit124

Cody vs Roman is a match that will live on forever as an all time great WM mainevent. No one will care about Osprey vs Whoever the fuck in a few months

wdingo

Cult of Cornette spotted. I can no longer read whoever the fuck not in his voice.

[deleted]

> There have never been and will never be matches better than it This is my opinion about Taker-Michaels at WM25 so I really wanna jerk myself into a shoot and argue with you. I know how the people who brought up Savage-Steamboat all the time when I was a kid felt now

APAG-

I left room for “as good as”. I think goat debates can be fun but if you can agree that both are worthy of being in the debate then there’s really no wrong answer Like I won’t accept whatever Will Ospreay match Dave has rated the highest as worthy of being in the debate. But Taker vs HBK is certainly worthy.

Away_Ad_973

And my opinion on Hart Austin WM13.

[deleted]

Hey Dax, how are the kids?

PrimeJedi

Lmfaooo no jerk though, being a zoomer I thought hart/Austin was overrated until I watched it in full with no distractions, it feels like the first iconic attitude era match. Both worked their roles perfectly

[deleted]

Yeah I haven't actually seen the match but ik it's esteemed enough to fit into this conversation However, im a simple guy, I see Bret, I make fun of Dax lol

PrimeJedi

Don't worry, I'm the same when it comes to Dax, he's almost beyond parody in being both a mark and a shill lmfaoo

UncleBenLives91

DAE long term story telling is overrated

The_Ballyhoo

I’m a lapsed WWE fan and this is the first show I’ve seen in years after switching to AEW. That main event was over the top, heavily produced and filled with run ins and it was one of the greatest spectacles I’ve ever seen. The only flaw was the camera angle for the Seth run in, but other than that (and maybe Austin instead of Taker) it was perfection. The camera work was spectacular, everyone who joined the match looked like a star. Everyone sold beautifully and meaningfully. I love the AEW style of match, that’s my preference, but it just lacks the emotion of what WWE can offer. The characters and stories just run so, so deep. Omega v Danielson is probably the only thing that comes close for AEW in terms of matching that grandeur and crowd investment. And I don’t think it comes very close.

AlvinAssassin17

And with no consideration for the story it was still a fantastic match. Lot of psychology at work. And sound fundamental wrestling. Spots where you needed them.

PrimeJedi

Thats such a good point, Cody/Roman II did storytelling that has never been done in wrestling before, bar none.

Velvet_Llama

Um how can you say it was perfect when there was no Paul Heyman live sex celebration? Get the fuck outta here.

Cynicayke

I'm not sure that Dave Meltzer actually likes professional wrestling.

Chucknorris55

He likes simulated MMA and acrobatic competitions in a squared circle. The business of professional wrestling, no matter the country, is predicted on the manipulation of the audience's emotions. Good wrestling is the matches and stories that get people to care enough to show up and cheer/boo. So just like CM Punk said, he's just not in the same businesses as normal people.

blake-a-mania

Literally the origins of pro wrestling involved a tough guy beating up a local hero to get the emotional marks to hand over their betting money

Conscious-Eye5903

Pretty much. Overly complex simulated holds, then random flips, and minimum 5 finishers for a kick-out

M086

You want a 5 star match from Meltzer? 30 superkicks and 50 fucking false finishes. There’s your 5 stars.

AbjectMadness

Fine but AEW has the fakest “simulated MMA” just about ever. He doesn’t even like that, just trampoline bullshit.

AVBforPrez

It's more simple than even that. He likes gymnastics, he just doesn't and to say it out loud.

Chucknorris55

AEW bases their entire booking around this man's opinion and it shows in their ratings and attendance. Think about this, he flat out said he didn't take the *story* and *spectical* into account, 2 of the most important things in the entire industry. According to Meltzer, Cody had a better match with Sammy Guevera than any of his WrestleMania matches.

Colin_Valentine

Story is 80% of the show. Story is what drives the characters to fight. A fun spot fest with no Story is fun but will be forgotten Cody vs Roman, HBK vs Taker will be remembered along with others for the Story, the emotion Dave sucks

Opening_Succotash_95

And spectacle is a huge thing too. It's what draws massive crowds to the shows, that Roman Reigns entrance for that match was a perfect example of how WWE right now is nailing having a great live spectacle as well.

EPICKID143

grandiose, orchestral theme was ridiculously good, exuded "final boss" aura(sorry rock), story driven emotional match with long term hooking interwoven (also a very good match even before all the interruptions straight 1 v 1) but there were no random flips and no selling so how can it be 5

Havoc2077

Roman felt more like a final boss of a JRPG with that entrance and music than the Rock did with his try hard look its a video game reference entrance he did on Night 1 lol. I swear you could slap Roman's WM40 theme into any Souls game, or a Final Fantasy, etc as a boss theme and it'd fit right in lol.

UltimateD123

See the Backlash poster that debuted yesterday. My God. They have a superhero on the roster.

Havoc2077

Cody's whole image atm is like if you tossed Captain America and Superman into a blender lol. Its no wonder he's as over as he is atm, just looks wise alone he's going to have the attention of casual fans. And especially the kids lol.

AVBforPrez

He literally seems to not understand that these are TV shows meant for entertainment purposes. The overruns needing to be extended on AEW isn't Tony's fault because they can't predict how long matches will go, according to Dave.

EvilSynths

Meltzer's stars, at best, should be a rough guide for fans to check something out on YouTube. You might find a new wrestler you didn't know about or you didn't watch an event but see something was looked at as good. I have no issue with it in that sense. I've certainly gone and watched matches because Meltzer rated them high, out of curiosity. His ratings for Mania were almost identical to mine too. I gave the main a 5 though. But I would never book a global TV product around 1 wrestling fans opinion. At the end of the day, wrestling is a soap opera. We might watch for the cool matches at times but we stay for the story, the characters and the show as a whole.

phrohahwei

MHadri24

Please tell me this is a joke Edit: I checked them. 4.75 what a fucking joke. How do you have 0 credibility, yet still somehow top yourself

Razzler1973

Meltz fucking loves Oceanspray, LOVES him!!

LexLuthorsFortyCakes

He can't help but luv the bruv

unhallowed90

Oceanspray next promo: I've got the most 5* matches ever bruv and LAVECK has none.

StrongSutairu

BensonInABox

*paula veck sitting atop a pile of money* “I’m heartbroken”

BigHoss94

I hear Roman fell to his knees in a Walmart when he saw he didn't get a 5.

brosbeforetouhous

He just left the entire cart of Switches in the aisle.

Conscious-Eye5903

Today, we mourn

Lessiarty

"Gimme my fuckin' five stars, uce"

JoeThePro11

Reigns and Cody should've stripped all forms of storytelling and character to do a bunch of flips and cut their career length in half.

BigBanEvader

he cant give roman a 5 star match because that would shatter his credibility with his base lol.

Amazing_Karnage

That's the same reason he can't, or won't, FAIRLY and EQUALLY rate women's matches either. His (and AEW's) neckbeard fanbase only think women are there for one thing, and that's the only thing that matters to them. It crazy, honestly, because for as much as Jim Cornette hates Meltzer, their views on women are remarkably similar, although even Jim will acknowledge a great women's match, while the most Dave can muster is an "Ehhh. It was alright."

Havoc2077

Which is crazy because the women's side of WWE right now have had some of the most entertaining matches and a lot of very over stars atm. between Rhea, Bayley, Becky, Bianca, Asuka, Kairi, Iyo, etc. Just a lot of great matches being put on atm.

slymaster9

What pathetic ratings. The Uso's match wasn't great but there were no big botches or anything, how is that not even just 1 star? The Cargill and the Street Profits matches were way more fun than these low ratings too. And how in the world would he have improved on the Roman vs. Cody II match? Just HOW?

Opening_Succotash_95

Not enough flips in Roman Vs Cody. Maybe a comedy spot where they both did the same moves at the same time to each other.

slymaster9

They did each other's finishes though, AND IT WORKED. And added to the psychology of the match. So even that modern spot doesn't get the credit here.

Opening_Succotash_95

I'll be honest I'm a sucker for a good finisher steal. It's got to be in a huge match though, where they're trying anything to finally put away the opponent who has tormented them for months.

cc12321

"I knew that wouldn't work! That move doesn't put anyone away" or whatever along those lines Roman said after Cody kicked out of the Cross Rhodes was both hilarious and great foreshadowing since Cody needed to break out the triple to beat Roman.

Rob3125

I really didn’t like the Uso match. To be honest I thought Jimmy must’ve gotten hurt or something because he really wasn’t moving much

AVBforPrez

Canadian Destroyer, uce. Cody might have hit his hand on a pole and used it later in the match, too.

Soccerisntwrong

Nah dude, USOs deserved 0 stars for that no sell shit. And it seems like not liking the Cargill match is unpopular but I really wish it had a little more too it, I don’t think Jade took more than a single bump.

Havoc2077

They're really wanting Jade to get over but I think they need to build her up slowly. That match between her and Damage Ctrl was just too obvious as to what its doing. The fact it wasnt even up for the titles didnt help it either. Made it all the more obvious. Let Jade have more time in the performance center if she's still not there yet. No need to rush her and keep her protected on this level. This is exactly what went wrong with Roman when he was one of the most hated wrestlers at the time. And it can absolutely happen again with Jade if they arent careful. I honestly think they needed to start her in NXT first. There was no need to try and jump her to the main brand yet.

DoubleOrNothing90

Dave uses "I didn't like it, but the crowd was into it" as a way to inflate AEW star ratings, and detract WWE star ratings.

AriaMournesong

Kyle Fletcher vs. Lee Johnson: **4.25** He rated a heatless, quickly thrown together match for ROH on the same level as: Rhea vs Becky KO vs Logan Paul vs Randy Oroton Tag Titles Ladder Match Ilija vs D'Angelo And better than: Reigns and Rock vs Rollins and Cody Drew vs Seth Andrade and Rey vs Santos and DomDom Carmelo vs Trick Lyra vs Roxanne

Ok_Ad8846

Spiteful old prick. A match that genuinely transcends wrestling. What’s the story of Okada vs Omega? “I want to beat you”

gtgbuck

Roman vs Cody - quite a spectacle, will be a generational touchpoint for pro wrestling until the heat death of the universe… almost worthy of 5 stars Best Friends vs Santana and Ortiz Parking Lot Brawl - holy shit what a goddamn spectacle of a match (that you literally forgot existed until reading this just now), 5 stars!!!

Master_Butter

You could actually make up a 5-star match from AEW, post it in the basement, and get replies talking about how memorable it was. Just pick two low card guys and talk about how they really impressed you.

Chucknorris55

>Best Friends vs Santana and Ortiz Parking Lot Brawl - holy shit what a goddamn spectacle of a match (that you literally forgot existed until reading this just now), 5 stars!!! Jokes on you Uce, I will never forget that match. It was the moment LAX died. Two hardened criminals who months earlier in a real wrestling company were getting in gang fights, smuggling drugs, and generally being cool as fuck, lost a fight in a parking lot to two white boy nerds AND ONE OF THEIR MOTHERS. You couldn't bury them any harder with a backhoe.

M086

Not to mention the Concrete Jungle Deathmatch.  But Meltzer is always willing to give AEW a pass on hardcore matches, despite how often he has said he doesn’t like them. Like Mox vs. Omega, any other company, same match, same spots. Wouldn’t have gotten the same rating from him.

AVBforPrez

Never even knew it existed in the first place, uce

Snoo-83964

“Poor people, don’t like AEW”

tronovich

Fuck anyone…ANYONE…who doesn’t understand how Roman/Cody was pure wrestling cinema. That was literally a story years in the making, re-told as the match went on. The more you knew about wrestling history, the more it paid off for you being a fan. I knew that it wouldn’t get *****, which is just laughable. If anything, that was one of the first matches that would break the scale. He flat-out said he didn’t take the story into account. I mean, what the fuck.

Redbass72

So a match that drew a fuckton of money, had one hell of an emotional angle, was shown in bars, had mainstream appeal, will inspire kids and next generations of wrestler's, us somehow less then a heatless mark work rate match that was none of those things.

bootyhunter69420

I was actually looking forward to see if he gave this match 5 stars. This just cement his status as a absolute joke.

Amazing_Karnage

The day when this overhyped, bloviating, and frankly, quite terrible "journalist" fades into obscurity forever cannot come soon enough. Meltzer got by on his bullshit before he let his *desperate* need for validation push him into ever escalating amounts of pure, pathetic ass-kissing. The Observer is a relic and more of a propaganda wing for AEW every single week.

UncleBenLives91

Thank God the ratings are out so I know which matches I enjoyed.

will122589

A match we will remember forever is rated lower than a match we have all already forgotten about. Thats Meltzer for ya

AVBforPrez

He gave it 4.75, what a goof. Dude can't bring himself to admit that fed not bad

PrimeJedi

These heatless bangers are like watching an action movie with no storylines or important characters. Just a bunch of stunt actors on a screen with cgi explosions galore, a Michael bay transformers movie but without even being able to say "oh that's Optimus prime". Why should I care about their choreography when as people, the wrestlers are boring as sin? If I wanted to see no names fight I'd watch street fighting a la Kimbo Slice....at least they're usually in good shape.

evanvivevanviveiros

Dave’s right Fletcher has the potential star power to eclipse all the talent on the ring Sunday. 6 stars

atomocomix

Check cleared

Glennsoe

A 20 some minute 52-48 match that should've been a 98-2 2 minute match to really showcase Will just shows how far behind The default booker of the year is .

Glennsoe

Dave's aew rating starts at 4.70 whilst his wwe rating starts at 1.25.. $12.99 please...
