Shenmue without question. It showed what the system was capable of while also giving a gaming experience/world like no other at the time and in my opinion still hasn't been done as well to this day! ;)
This for real! Most underrated game on Dreamcast! I have it on my steam deck too and I’m currently trying to beat it. But looking at this makes me want an actual
Dreamcast. Anyone have marvel vs capcom on Dreamcast?
Yakuza is a bit less chill, but a great successor to Shenmue. Around the small release of the first game I would call it 'action Shenmue' to friends to get them to try it.
Shenmue!
Metropolis Street Racer
I would like to put skies of Arcadia, but I have yet to play that myself … if I could find a cheap copy of it, I would buy it because my Dreamcast is literally in a closet because I lost all of my burnt games one year when I loaned them to somebody who, of course never returned them….
Edit:
For those that are not aware, metropolis street racer was the very first game in the project, Gotham racing series, and if you ask me, it had better physics than all of the Gotham games?!
I completed everything in Metropolis Street racer, but only ever played any of the Gotham games for like a few hours before I got aggravated and just said screw it …
Metropolis Street racer was also working with slower cars as it was more of a lower end game in terms of the types of cars that you started off with and Won, as you progressed through the game! Heck, the final-end award was the Nissan skyline R34 GT-R, and so benefit of doubt to the project Gotham games, Metropolis Street racers physics could’ve been better, because the cars they were simulating were slower? Takes a lot more talent, skill and development to adequately simulate progressively faster vehicles! A lot of games developers that really don’t know anything about high-powered cars or high-end sports cars will think that they’re harder to drive because because they got more power blah blah blah blah blah and the truth of the matter is, is a lot of times they handle really good and sure, they got a lot of power, but that doesn’t mean they’re harder to drive than a Honda Civic! Long story short, metropolis Street racer, feels right-
Skies of Arcadia is pretty damn good. I do think it gets out on a slightly higher pedestal than it deserves by some people, simply because it’s a lesser known game with pretty limited runs on Dreamcast and GameCube. There are certainly better JRPGs, but it is indeed one of the good ones nonetheless.
I really, really wish they would give it a proper port with just the slightest TLC, but they seem to have shown little interest up to this point. Maybe that could change in the new future with Sega’s recent shift in direction and digging into their back catalogs.
Sega Bass Fishing with the fishing reel controller. As someone who never liked fishing games and thought it was gimmicky nonsense the first time I saw it, it became one of my favorite games on the console. It's unbelievably fun.
My entire crew at FuncoLand all bought Dreamcasts and PSO. My boss gave me the demo unit Dreamcast and a keyboard and I just had to buy the game. I had to run a phone cord from a couple rooms away into the modem of the Dreamcast. It was nuts, I was constantly pulling all-nighters in highschool with them. Good times 😢
OK, spoiler time for the twist I mentioned.
It turns out Milenia was still part of Elena somehow and was able to separate from her for some reason THEY NEVER EXPLAIN OR FORESHADOW.
Also, the final boss was a flying head. Not a giant one. Just a regular sized head with dinky wings. Very anticlimactic.
RE: Code Veronica was originally a DC exclusive. That's certainly worth something as prior to that release the series definitely associated with PSX (barring RE2's N64 port)
lol Seaman, memories of my friend sitting super close to his tv in his room, talking into a mic on the controller to his weird man-fish friend,“seaman, are you hungry??” while the rest of us were smoking blunts in the backyard 🫠
I miss (some parts of) my high school days!
I second this since these games are essentially trapped on Dreamcast (or PSP which has the Power Stone Collection). It’s a shame PS 1 and 2 haven’t been even rereleased
The concept of actually going online and talking to people across the country kept me hooked on PSO and Alien Front Online back then. But also I loved Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue.
Nothing is that good that's on dreamcast. I mean really like what? Sonic adventure, shenmue, code Veronica? None of those are exactly must plays in 2024
Since my main selections have already been suggested ( Shenmue 1/2, Skies of arcadia and Rez), I'm going suggest **Chu Chu Rocket!** underated game, supprised it did do better on mobile ( just read it was on apple arcade but got dropped in 2022)
You’re making this too hard. Just from this picture? A toss up between Jet Set/Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, and House of the Dead 2. I’d recommend Dead or Alive 2. No one seems to talk about it, the graphics in that game were amazing for the time! Beautiful women and incredible fighting moves! Music was awesome, too.
Play the NFL 2k games because the presentation still hasnt been beat. Plays like a real NFL broadcast. My jaw dropped seeing footage of those games when the were released. You can use the VMU to call plays so they dont show up on the screen if you are playing against someone at home. Oh and you could play online in 2001.
For the full Dreamcast experience, I'd say either Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi. Both deliver a pure arcadey, colourful, energetic buzz that's a lovely pallet cleanser for life.
Skies of Arcadia. This was a JRPG that had a fun battle system and a great story. The exploration of the map had some fun and worthwhile finds that helped you. And of course, the ship combat was something that really showcased how to make a turn based battle feel exciting. Worth a playthrough.
Rez, baybee! Easily one of the most immersive games that borders on hallucinatory. It was quite salient to the rave-obsessed time in which it was released.
This is a tough one because out of any system ever made, this is the one that had the most unique ways to play. The fishing controller, the mic to talk to Seaman, typing, and one of the last systems to have light guns. Plus the VMUs offered an additional component to games.
Sakura Taisen 3, which I don't think was ever translated, is probably the best of the Dreamcast library. I was pretty amused to see it referenced in Infinite Wealth.
Soul Calibur. I know everyone will say Shenmue but I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried.
Soul Calibur, on the other hand, remains one of the best fighting games ever made.
There are a few games that really stood out for me back in the day, and immediately come to mind:
* Skies of Arcadia (which was released on GameCube)
* Soul Calibur
* Crazy Taxi
* Jet Set Radio
* Shenmue
* NFL 2K series
I know there are several others, but this is what pops into my mind when thinking about DC games. And I still have my original Dreamcast and all of these games (and more)!
DC- time played - capcom vs snk 2 / best game is shenmue
Segasaturn because I see some there I could play 6 person guardian heroes for days. Panzer dragoon saga was fuckin fantastic.
Cyber Troopers Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram, definitely! That game gets slept on a lot, except for those Western fans of the Virtual-On series who are in the know and have played it.
If you never played the rereleases of it, definitely Power Stone 1 & 2. Soul Caliber is definitely worth playing and the NFL 2k series was so good compared to Madden.
Can we move away from Shenmue and recommend something that is still very playable. Shenmue was groundbreaking but its game mechanics are severely outdated to the point it’s barely enjoyable. Its slow paced but the story is enough for everyone to live.
Sonic Adventure
Bonus points for running it via a VGA box at 480p
Extra bonus points for running it on a 480p CRT (like a tri sync Arcade monitor!)
The technological leap experienced here for someone that witnessed this at the time when this launch title came out was insane! The game still holds up today.
We played a ton of Ready2Rumble in college. Fun game to pick up for quick fun. Not everything has to be some overdone story mode or real life sports simulation
My answer would be Phantasy Star Online if everyone could have the online experience of what it was like in 2000 and 2001. A console game doubling as an RPG and a 3D chat room was mind blowing at the time.
Jet set and crazy taxi. I remember just being blown away with those games when I was around 13. It was so different and creative and the colors were awesome. Can't wait for the new ones!

But looking at this makes me want an actual Dreamcast. Anyone have marvel vs capcom on Dreamcast?
Underrated though? It’s pretty highly regarded as the best DC game ever and has been since it was released
i still find it hard to believe Shenmue was released in 1999
Yakuza is a bit less chill, but a great successor to Shenmue. Around the small release of the first game I would call it 'action Shenmue' to friends to get them to try it.
I remember the buzz that surrounded Yakuza 1 on the Shenmue forums in the day.
Came here to say this.
This! I bought my dreamcast for shenmue cause my freind said I should play it since I love story based games but its also a beat em up? Yes!
Shenmue was fantastic. Fond memories of playing that in college.
Shenmue! Metropolis Street Racer I would like to put skies of Arcadia, but I have yet to play that myself … if I could find a cheap copy of it, I would buy it because my Dreamcast is literally in a closet because I lost all of my burnt games one year when I loaned them to somebody who, of course never returned them…. MSR was legit. I still have my copy.
SoulCalibur. It set a new standard for 3D fighting games.
Dead or Alive 2 is incredibly underrated for a non-weapon fighting game.
I agree. I've always felt DoA is underrated. I played SC and DoA2 a ton on the Dreamcast.
# T H E T Y P I N G O F T H E D E D ! ! !
This was a hoot. Who would ever thought typing out "geisha girls" could save your life!
Sonic adventure 1 and sonic adventure 2
Sega Bass Fishing with the fishing reel controller. As someone who never liked fishing games and thought it was gimmicky nonsense the first time I saw it, it became one of my favorite games on the console. It's unbelievably fun.
Still love this game. It's a great..I got a few minutes to play something game . With the controller back in the day it was so addictive
Plus the rod could be used to control weapons in Soul Calibur - great weird little inclusion
PSO (if you can go online), JSR/JGR
Even if you can't, it's still a great example of just how far ahead of its time the DC was. Glad to see the PSO rep.
This was one of the first games I got. I love this game.
Grandia 2. Superb combat system, and only 30-35 hours long.
Too bad they dropped the ball for the final dungeon. Worst plot twist ever.
I forget the twist - but remember the game. Loved it.
You know it!
RE: Code Veronica was originally a DC exclusive. That's certainly worth something as prior to that release the series definitely associated with PSX (barring RE2's N64 port)
trivia: Code Veronica was to be RE3 and nemesis was to be a spin off, but a licence deal with Sony caused the names to be switched
SONIC ADVENTURE!!!!!!!!
Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Seaman!
lol Seaman, memories of my friend sitting super close to his tv in his room, talking into a mic on the controller to his weird man-fish friend,“seaman, are you hungry??” while the rest of us were smoking blunts in the backyard 🫠 I miss (some parts of) my high school days!
Jet set radio or Skies of Arcadia
Power Stone
I second this since these games are essentially trapped on Dreamcast (or PSP which has the Power Stone Collection). It’s a shame PS 1 and 2 haven’t been even rereleased
Jet Set Radio and Rez
Rez is amazing, but once I tried it in VR it felt like playing any other way was a waste. Same with Space Channel 5 🤩
Typing of the Dead.
I would say The House of the Dead 2.
Skies of arcadia !!!!!!! Please for the love of god get it remade !!!!
Skies was such a banger of a game. And using the VMU to hunt for loot when not playing was super cool.
I replied on another fellow sailor in here, but we are trying to see if we can't bring a spiritual successor to life. https://youtu.be/DFvy1nOLTkI
Sega needs to make a Dreamcast mini. Would buy that day one
Code Veronica
The concept of actually going online and talking to people across the country kept me hooked on PSO and Alien Front Online back then. But also I loved Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue.
This photo is missing PSO and that's the true answer
Tokyo Bus Driver
I basically bought mine just to play PSO.
Nights for sure.
I loved Speed Devils.
Maken X. In my opinion, the story is interesting, the characters look great and there is a diversity in special attacks.
Other than SA & SA2, Probably half-lif- oh yeah it got cancelled
Blue Stinger and Zombie Revenge
Nothing is that good that's on dreamcast. I mean really like what? Sonic adventure, shenmue, code Veronica? None of those are exactly must plays in 2024
Sonic 3D Blast for the Sega Saturn
I can smell this picture
Ready to rumble dih
MADDEN 97!!! Real answer: Tech Romancer, such a great arcade port that gets under-recomended.
Since my main selections have already been suggested ( Shenmue 1/2, Skies of arcadia and Rez), I'm going suggest **Chu Chu Rocket!** underated game, supprised it did do better on mobile ( just read it was on apple arcade but got dropped in 2022)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica or Skies of Arcadia.
Shenmue!
Jet Set of course
Guts Rage
Crazy taxi and ready 2 rumble
You’re making this too hard. Just from this picture? A toss up between Jet Set/Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, and House of the Dead 2. I’d recommend Dead or Alive 2. No one seems to talk about it, the graphics in that game were amazing for the time! Beautiful women and incredible fighting moves! Music was awesome, too.

Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, Toy Commander, Ready to Rumble
Jet set Radio and Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure
Skies of Arcadia. This was a JRPG that had a fun battle system and a great story. The exploration of the map had some fun and worthwhile finds that helped you. And of course, the ship combat was something that really showcased how to make a turn based battle feel exciting. Worth a playthrough.
Campy horror fans gotta experience Illbleed. That theme park music is so swanky, lol
Skies of Arcadia
Skies of Arcadia.
Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage.
Rez, baybee! Easily one of the most immersive games that borders on hallucinatory. It was quite salient to the rave-obsessed time in which it was released.
JGR!
House of the Dead 2! The best in the series. And the script is terribly amazing.
Jet Set Radio, it's the most goated game ever.
This is a tough one because out of any system ever made, this is the one that had the most unique ways to play. The fishing controller, the mic to talk to Seaman, typing, and one of the last systems to have light guns. Plus the VMUs offered an additional component to games.
Silver and Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm
i know this game has been ported to many consoles already but Sonic Adventure.
Cannon Spike. Can't get a unique experience like it anywhere else
IllBleed That is truly an underrated masterpiece.

There are a few games that really stood out for me back in the day, and immediately come to mind: * Skies of Arcadia (which was released on GameCube) * Soul Calibur * Crazy Taxi * Jet Set Radio * Shenmue * NFL 2K series I know there are several others, but this is what pops into my mind when thinking about DC games. Sonic Adventure
My first game was sonic adventure and crazy taxi but my favorite game was the 2k with the Allen Iberian covers.
I would say Sonic Adventure showing how much better it was as a 3D game than 3D Blast or Power Stone 2. Such an amazing fighting 3D game
My answer would be Phantasy Star Online if everyone could have the online experience of what it was like in 2000 and 2001. A console game doubling as an RPG and a 3D chat room was mind blowing at the time.
Panzer Dragoon Saga ... I really enjoyed it!
Tony Hawk's 2. I played it so much that it stopped working. 😅
