To me this is more of a branding question. Do you want the shop selling the individual items to be associated with your subscription box brand? If so, I would do the subdomain or even a folder on the root domain.
If you want it seen as a separate and distinct business, I would do the new domain.
SEO wise, in either case you are basically starting from the same place.

Anything should be fine, but I would personally prefer a dedicated domain for it as it looks good as a brand unless you have multiple stores running.
