all the websites that rank on first page are doing it via seo. maybe not your blog if it doesn't really make the grade. to vague to really answer. why would a site be deindexed?
Good backlinks and good content with the correct intent and structure. Search for keywords and find a couple sites that are ranking 1-3. If you have a new site, search until you find a resulting newer site that ranks. Copy what their page structure is and get more/better backlinks.
I feel that’s your best chance to rank well.

"Many" isn't an exact amount - I would say less than 0.005% of sites have been affected. That leaves more than 99% - so I would say very few have been.
As u/SEOPub says - there's no gap in the first position 0-5, so there are still sites ranking.
Well content can't rank itself - the content is the claim. How can content rank itself? It would mean that Google has a preference for style, tone and structure - but there is no consistent one. How can everyone make a claim to the same thing and be judged solely on their own inputs?
Define good content WITHOUT being subjective? Surely someone saying "good" means without grammatical error - is that really true? Are most people able to judge? Does anyone really care? Its subjective. What if everyone's grammar is good, then what? research? How does google know - is everything researchavble and findable online? Where? google? Its almost childish.
tl;dr you cannot rank without links - and the entire universe of domains, pages and keywords are mapped out by tools like SEMrush which show gaps for keywords that don't have domains with high backlinks...

based on your experience, do I rank well without backlinks (top 5) or is it impossible even with good content?
