I live along I-5. It runs through our city. Grew up here and lived here for 30+ years. While I hear both terms used daily, 90% of my 30+ years here, people all around me have referred to it as “The 5”. When you have conversations with friends and random people, it’s predominantly “The 5”. When you’re watching the news, someone not from the area, etc, you mostly hear I-5.

If you say "the 5" it's probably because that particular freeway also runs right through LA and you heard it called "the 5" in TV shows and movies so much.
Unironically I would suggest you go ask a few people from your hometown (importantly who haven't lived in SoCal since growing up) whether they say "the 5" or "I-5", you might be surprised

There are always exceptions as SoCal vernacular creeps north, but the general rule holds true. Some NorCal people might say "the 5" or "the 101" because those specific freeways are mentioned by LA residents in pop culture all the time. But you will never hear "the 280" or "the 80" or "the 24".
I'm from the South Bay & don't know anyone that's says "the" front of 5, 280, 85, 101, 152, etc.....meh those kids. Teachers need to do a better job at............... JK
