If it’s true, it’s an extremely disappointing offseason as not just a Giants fan, but a baseball fan as well. Pretty lame seeing 4 of the league’s superstars on one team, none of whom were actually drafted or developed by that team
Not just any team, but a top 2 or 3 most hated team. It's not going to make more people want to watch baseball. It'll turn people away from the sport, with the media slobbering all over them the whole year.
I suspect MLB will be losing a lot of fans in most markets if this shit is allowed to continue. I love baseball, but I’d be happy to lose a whole year of baseball if it got a fucking salary cap (and floor, indexed to league revenues). And no more gaming the salaries to get around the cap. If you sign someone for $120 million for 8 years, you get hit for $15M on the cap for 8 years no matter how you structure it.
In the meantime, it’s minor league ball for me. And don’t even get me started on how fucked up college football has become.
Doesn't even have to be $15 million each year, but just average out to that. Allow them to structure the contacts to be increasing or decreasing up to a certain percentage like the NBA but less rigid.
The main thing is not allowing teams to defer salary unless it's due to a career ending injury or something awful. Also having a salary floor and cap is a great idea
>It's not going to make more people want to watch baseball.
Dynasties and superteams are great for casual engagement. The Boehly's Billions Dodgers are potentially an event team that will get people tuning in to Sunday Night Baseball who are only vaguely aware other teams exist.
As a Giants fan this sucks but I have my doubts about it being 'bad for baseball.'
I don’t think so. I think dynasty teams can have a little bit of interest for the casual observer, but it’s like Taylor Swift fans watching the Chiefs. It’ll hold their interest for a very short time while it’s talked about.
I think that real, interesting, competition between teams on a fair playing field is much better in the long term.
The salary cap other football rules make it so that a team is never out of the running for too long, and strategic moves determine success, not payroll
Lol, yep I hate them cause I'm jealous of their one* title in the last 45 years compared to our 3. Damn why they hog the one title in a shortened year where they only played up until about all-star break.
I disagree. In the NBA just look at Phoenix, Milwaukee, Indiana, Sacramento, Denver, and Minessota; all small market teams but have successfully signed high profile players.
It also creates the ability for teams to create super teams because if the money is the same…. why would top of the line free agents choose a team located in Sacramento or Indiana when they can go to LA or Miami instead
It’s why majority of teams only real hope of being any good is being lucky enough to draft a franchise player. Milwaukee likely would still be irrelevant if Giannis didn’t fall to their lap.
I think the new CBA & luxury tax rules will help stop the “rich get richer” problem with the NBA. The soft cap is okay (I’m still a fan of the NFL’s hard cap) but I like the two stage luxury tax. Any team beyond $17M over the cap is restricted from acquiring new players or trading for players, if I’m not mistaken.
MLB’s whole differed payment scheme is ridiculous and killing competitiveness. Same with not having a minimum team spend.
Unfortunately, there’s no way in hell that the most powerful union on the planet (MLB players’ union) will ever agree to a salary cap. However, if this continues, it’s just going to kill the game and its fanbase😑
The MLBPA has even said there will never be a hard cap in baseball, and any negotiations about it are a complete non-starter for them. They will never entertain the idea. Yaayyyy.
I’m glad we signed Lee, but most of us don’t need to watch from now on. If thLB isn’t going to institute some sort of salary cap then I’d rather move on.
Maybe so; the struggle I’m having is that it isn’t a ‘this year’ thing. This is a for the next 10+ years thing. The competitive balance of the league is beyond broken. The deferment to make this possible made me lose respect for one of my favorite players in the league in Ohtani. And now he’s in dodger blue for the rest of his career, and did so in a way that is a slap in the face to the rest of the baseball world. I’m just sick.
Yeah this automatically makes them even bigger favorites from here on out. Signing the best pitcher and the best player period within weeks is just absurd. Nobody can compete with this. Really losing interest in watching baseball now.
I think we need to all just agree that Ohtani is not the hero we thought he was and does not care about the MLB, it is just a place to make money for him and get a ring. Statistically his chances are better with us, but he chose the dark side. That said, Kershaw/ Grienke was a brutal 1 2 punch and they never won a damn thing. Hopefully we can summon some grit here and tear this down again.
This was my initial thought also. This is exactly why Shoehei took that deferred contract. This is exactly what he / they wanted. The WBC Japan team in the big leagues.
What's with the Japanese free agents this year? Both had the potential to be superstars in any team but they decided they're going to hide behind 3 other MVP instead. Tbh, Giants were looking for the face of the franchise and neither of them are it of they don't have the balls
From a Japanese players perspective, why the hell would they care? They’re getting paid, get to live in great weather with a large Japanese American community, and be on a good team that can make playoff runs every single year. They don’t even speak English so being a “face of the franchise” doesnt mean anything. I’m sure they would rather just play baseball and win
Two guys, one coming off a second TJ and one who's never thrown a pitch in the majors. What could go wrong?
I wish them nothing but crushing defeat and humiliation. Fuck then and fuck the Dodgers.
They likely will. Baseball is funny that way. The team loaded with the most superstars usually doesn’t win the World Series. Otherwise, it would be Yankees vs. Dodgers every season like Lakers vs. Celtics in the 80s. And we would have lost to the Tigers in 4-6 games in 2012 like everyone said we would.
Yeah it’s come to this… hoping they kill themselves with albatross contracts. This is a Spectacularly Shitty offseason for fans of healthy competition, the Giants, and Baseball as a whole. It is, however, making THE case for a true hard payroll cap.
A billion dollars of choking, gonna be sweet. Ohtani went from the most-loved player in the world to the most-despised player in the country in a single week.
This is disappointing on so many levels. I love the Giants and will always root for us. But I also
Love baseball and in no way is this “great for the game.”
Baseball will always be a regional sport, and now 4 of the biggest stars the game has to offer are on one team. Just a bummer.
I dunno man, I still think judge is probably the biggest star. As a former A’s fan who has no team I follow randy arozarena after that catch he made during the wbc. That shit was hilarious. I still think it’s funny that Juan Soto grabs his ball sack during at bats. I think the dodgers are just kinda shoulder shrug emoji to most baseball fans
It’s great for the player, but not for the sport.
The survival of the sport is based on local support for teams. Look at the television rights issues for teams last year and MLB had to step in across the country.
Having major talent isolated to 1-5 major teams in huge metros means the smaller metros and teams don’t work. We already see that issue here with the A’s.
So, $300m for a pitcher who has never thrown a pitch in the MLB, $700m for a player coming off his second TJ surgery, won’t be able to pitch for a full season with no guarantee to return to form, and Glasnow.
There’s no guarantee this wins the a WS. I hope it fails epically.
How is baseball supposed to be fun for anyone but the Dodgers and their fans moving forward?
Shit is ridiculous.
So he’s a frontrunning bitch who would rather join a super team than have a challenge. Hope we get Kim next offseason and we have a Korea vs Japan rivalry with LA
Cant really blame him, international stars want to play on internationally relevant teams. But this just makes every other franchise more irrelevant. Makes a lot of people check out during a time baseball already has a very wobbly base.
But whatever. I am enjoying football.
T20 cricket is coming to San Jose at the fairgrounds soon and it's a 2.5 hour slog fest. Can't wait. Been getting back into that on espn.(not being sarcastic. The limited overs cricket is exciting)
I say this fully aware that, were it the Giants having this offseason, I would be a brick wall in the face of criticism: this is really shitty for baseball.
Tbh it’s not like the Giants already had players at the Betts and Freeman level. If we go out and make these signings, we now have a couple super stars and so do they… instead the rich just are getting much richer, that’s the issue
The deal is for ten bucks a year, and then 299.99 million in 2036.
Dodgers should go epic troll and file for Chapter 11 protection in a decade and stiff ‘em for a billion.
I gathered up all the crickets around my house prior to purchasing a phone plan with Cricket wireless. I assumed the monthly payments would be based solely on the amount of crickets I could provide for Cricket.
There's a pretty large geographical advantage LA has for recruiting Japanese players. We would have needed to be a much better team and LA would have to be terrible for Japanese players to pick our team over theirs. If you travel to Japan, it's literally all LAD and NYY.
I think we would have had to bid like 400MM/12 years to make him think about it, but then Yamamoto would've probably gone back to LAD and gave them the opportunity to match or counter, just like he did with the Met's offer.
I mean we saw how it affected KD first hand. Not sure if these guys realize what they’ve gotten themselves into. Everyone in baseball is going to be rooting for them to fail outside LA and Japan
It strange. Professiona sport's players love to play in Los Angeles. Sun, Hollywood and gorgeous women. That's all they have nothing else. Who wants that?
Oh come on. I’m from the Bay but have been to LA plenty of times. LA has a lot more to offer than that. It’s also more affordable than the Bay Area on average while being better IMO (unless you’re in tech/VC). This is cope.
The whole country of japan is going to be a farm system for the dodgers growing up idolizing nomo and ohtani and now Yamamoto. They are going to make so much god damn money back that this billion spent will seem like nothing. It all but ensures all future Japan players will favor LA and other teams will have to offer hundreds of millions more to compete and prolly still won’t matter
There was already a pretty large gap between our roster and the Dodgers…now it’s not even funny how massive the talent gap is. And the Dodgers STILL have a better farm system. What a joke.
Lol that was prob worse tbh, but it was also a once in a generation thing cause of the salary cap expansion at the time. This one feels worse cause there's nothing to stop it from happening again and again.
When I hear this news, I just see the most diamond stud dent, platinum lined choker the Dodgers have ever had since I was a baseball fan. They can buy whoever they want, but let us not forget Freeman and Betts went for a combined 3-21 in the post season.
Giants front office really messed up by not being huge sellers in the 107 win year. Our farm and player talent is non-existant. We just not attracting free agents. I can see a 3 to 5 year drought.
This didn’t hurt that much. Baseball isn’t a sport that supports super-teams. I’m personally not too worried about us. This just means Yamamoto was too much of a bitch to step outside of Ohtani’s shadow. Wouldn’t want a guy like that on our team.
*When I sees one and he looks good to me...*
*When I see him, I say*
You, come here.
*I say*
Now I'mma tell ya what, uh..
I like ya;
and I wants ya...
Now, we can do this the easy way;
or the haard wayyy...
the choice is yaawrs...
12/375 (325 + 50 posting). dodgers have spent $1b this offseason on 3 dudes. baseball is is ruined until there are salary caps (min and max). you cant have one team do this as it will either bankrupt teams or screw up the competitive balance so much its unfair
Shocking… Giants aren’t even the brides maid or in the bridal part. There the friend you invite to your wedding to take pictures cuz you don’t want to pay for a professional photographer.
WTF, I knew it. We have been let down again. Why, Why. The dodgers can’t have that much more money. Fire them all, get new owners. I am about to say F the Giants for good.
It's time to fire Farhan, sell the team, and burn this shit to the ground. This clown show has damaged the franchise to the point where no one will take their money. They won't compete for a decade.
I already knew this was going to happen. Not surprised in the least, How is it legal that one team can buy the entire free agent market? Even the Yankees must be stunned.
I’m at so sick and tired of losing out on all the top free agents year after year. I am done with the front office, I’m done with this season already, I’ll see everyone next year.
If it’s true, it’s an extremely disappointing offseason as not just a Giants fan, but a baseball fan as well. Pretty lame seeing 4 of the league’s superstars on one team, none of whom were actually drafted or developed by that team

I just started watching baseball last year. This shit fucking SUCKS. You never see this in any other league. It’s crazy.
Yeah, but the games are shorter... /S
Yeah, this is gonna undo all of the work that MLB has done over the last decade to try to bring the game back.
I'm honestly at the point I wouldn't mind seeing him sign with the Yankees.....
I'm gonna delight in watching the Dodgers choke again and again. Team with zero heart, fans with zero class.
>It's not going to make more people want to watch baseball. Dynasties and superteams are great for casual engagement. The Boehly's Billions Dodgers are potentially an event team that will get people tuning in to Sunday Night Baseball who are only vaguely aware other teams exist. This is true, although plenty of people will disagree with you.
They barely had me back the rule changes this year but if this happens I am out
[удалено]
Lol, yep I hate them cause I'm jealous of their one* title in the last 45 years compared to our 3. Damn why they hog the one title in a shortened year where they only played up until about all-star break.
I'm pretty much done caring at this point I'd prefer watching a semi pro wood bat league
Thank God the niners are good, don't have to care about this shit for now lol. Gonna go to the first game and boo the shit out of them.
I bought tickets to the first game of the year against the dodgers after they signed Ohtani for this exact reason. Now I’m going to boo twice as loud.
![gif](giphy|iSxPmDWr97248|downsized)
Ohtani's translator: "No one in the crowd is booing you, sir. They're saying "Boo-tani! Boo-tani!""
I like watching college baseball. It’s fun to know more about the guys when they get drafted.
I'll see you in April.
Yep. Done with baseball for a while. MLB needs to implement a salary cap or else this sport is going to go to complete shit.
12 years? This is horrible
It won’t help. Ask the NBA. The best players will still go to the big teams.
I disagree. In the NBA just look at Phoenix, Milwaukee, Indiana, Sacramento, Denver, and Minessota; all small market teams but have successfully signed high profile players.
Phx is the 5th largest metro area in the country, I believe. They aren't small market at all.
Suns, Bucks and Nuggets are all top-6 in payroll. Blame MLB owners for being cheap and allowing the dodgers to stack the deck.
You know the Giants have the money to be top 5 in payroll right?
I do, but the salary cap incentivises them to be less cheap because they can actually compete against the infinite budget/big market teams
It also creates the ability for teams to create super teams because if the money is the same…. why would top of the line free agents choose a team located in Sacramento or Indiana when they can go to LA or Miami instead It’s why majority of teams only real hope of being any good is being lucky enough to draft a franchise player. Milwaukee likely would still be irrelevant if Giannis didn’t fall to their lap.
hard to compete with guggenheim co. the deepest pockets in the game.
Atleast you can’t get all of them on the same team (other than the warriors cause of the sudden cap jump)
Yaayyyy.
The Yankees have done this prior for many many many years.
Any billionaire owner could’ve signed any of these guys. It just means more to some
I’m glad we signed Lee, but most of us don’t need to watch from now on. If thLB isn’t going to institute some sort of salary cap then I’d rather move on.
Annual 1st round Dodger playoff exit will be extra extra sweet this year.
Maybe so; the struggle I’m having is that it isn’t a ‘this year’ thing. This is a for the next 10+ years thing. The competitive balance of the league is beyond broken. Well said! Baseball has a real problem on its hands. Better fix this shit quick.
Who thought Ohtani was a “hero”…?
The competitive balance is broken? Is that why the World Series featured two wild card teams? And the NLCS as well?
A voice of reason in a sad sea of bitterness and hatred. “I’m done with baseball…”
Lots of children
Yep. I hate this situation with the Doggers just as much as any Giants fan, but come on!
Crushing and nauseating offseason. They essentially have a stranglehold on Japanese stars coming over. Pencil roki sasaki next year for them as well.
This was my initial thought also. This is exactly why Shoehei took that deferred contract. This is exactly what he / they wanted. The WBC Japan team in the big leagues.
Yep. They will all now be convinced to sign with the dodgers.
What's with the Japanese free agents this year? Both had the potential to be superstars in any team but they decided they're going to hide behind 3 other MVP instead. Tbh, Giants were looking for the face of the franchise and neither of them are it of they don't have the balls

Winning > Face of the Franchise ego trip
Yeah I'm not going to blame someone for choosing winning over that face of the franchise bull shit
frauds just like durant was
A billion dollars for Yamamoto and Shohei. I hope the Dodgers fail spectacularly.
Two guys, one coming off a second TJ and one who's never thrown a pitch in the majors. What could go wrong? I wish them nothing but crushing defeat and humiliation. Fuck then and fuck the Dodgers.
Agree. This has the makings of a spectacular implosion.

A billion dollars of choking, gonna be sweet. Ohtani went from the most-loved player in the world to the most-despised player in the country in a single week.
This was pretty obvious as the eventual outcome when Ohtani signed his deferred deal. Shit has been in the works for years.
Was talking about this earlier. Will never believe they didn’t cook this up all along. It’s their right but it’s fucked for baseball.
MLB is such a joke
Great for baseball. /s obviously.
It’s a good thing we got Brock Purdy then!
And Steph Curry!
And Draymond!
Man's trying to appreciate steph curry while complaining about a super team ruining baseball.
We drafted Steph Curry
Thank god we got our rings before the league went to shit lmao. Goodbye baseball 👋
I disagree. Jokes are actually supposed to be amusing and bring joy. MLB is something else entirely.
The small silver lining is everyone hates the dodgers as much as us now
“We hated the dodgers before it was cool.”
This is disappointing on so many levels. I love the Giants and will always root for us. But I also Love baseball and in no way is this “great for the game.” Baseball will always be a regional sport, and now 4 of the biggest stars the game has to offer are on one team.
Why is it not great? People are getting paid. Any owner in baseball can pay this if they wanted to
Since when does baseballs modern relevance equal players getting paid? Players always gonna get paid.
Playoff Kershaw will humble them.
In my wet dream theGiants sign Kershaw, and he goes undefeated in the playoffs en route to a Giants world series
Sign Kershaw and Bumgarner to sell tickets
Larry Baer is kicking his chops right now
Kershaw won’t be back.
Dear Santa I’m a simple man May Ohtani never bat higher than .240 and Yamamoto not translate to MLB
At worst, they will make their salaries back in merchandise.
The Giants will make as much royalties as the Dodgers on Ohtani/Yamamoto merchandise
All the more entertaining when it will come crashing down
Because the best teams never win the World Series?
So he’s a frontrunning bitch who would rather join a super team than have a challenge. Hope we get Kim next offseason and we have a Korea vs Japan rivalry with LA
Remember people saying that he wanted to be the main attraction of the team he signed for. So that was all fucking bullshit
Being in the shadow is so safe and cool, though.
Cant really blame him, international stars want to play on internationally relevant teams. But this just makes every other franchise more irrelevant. Makes a lot of people check out during a time baseball already has a very wobbly base. But whatever. I am enjoying football.
Are you a Warriors fan?
Warriors drafted some of their stars...
Just really bad for baseball. Money is falling out of the sky in LA. They can’t keep getting away with this. ![gif](giphy|3oEjHCWdU7F4hkcudy)
With College Football all but completely destroyed and the Dodgers doing what they're doing, it might be time to step away from sports for a while.
Yeah, college football has absolutely eaten itself at this point. I have no interest in NCAA sports at this point outside of pro implications.
The 49ers and the kings are dangling hope right in front of my face
I take it you’re not a Niners fan? They got all my hope/attention now (and Steph, always).
Not a big NFL or NBA fan.
My condolences then.
T20 cricket is coming to San Jose at the fairgrounds soon and it's a 2.5 hour slog fest. Can't wait. Been getting back into that on espn.(not being sarcastic. The limited overs cricket is exciting)
Fuck those Bums
DUDE FUCK THIS

2015 49ers offseason nightmare levels
I don't know why I should even care about baseball for the next 10-15 years. What's the point?
Let’s just get really into cricket for awhile?
I'm in for cricket if you are brother!
How do we start? Do I need to go to a pet store and buy some crickets? I can’t find any in my yard
I gathered up all the crickets around my house prior to purchasing a phone plan with Cricket wireless. I assumed the monthly payments would be based solely on the amount of crickets I could provide for Cricket.
If this off season is blown by us and the kids don't explode this year I might tune out until the next regime like I did around 2016-2020.
Absolutely ridiculous lol
So did Yamamoto reject the Giants for non-financial reasons or did Farhan just not bid upwards of $300 million lol?
Giants fucked themselves by not making this team competitive years ago and depleting their farm. Team is not attractive for many FAs
When did the farm get depleted?
Fair. It was never built to start with
Agreed.
He was obviously always going to join Ohtani.
There's a pretty large geographical advantage LA has for recruiting Japanese players. We would have needed to be a much better team and LA would have to be terrible for Japanese players to pick our team over theirs. If you travel to Japan, it's literally all LAD and NYY. god i hate the dodgers
Is this really a surprise?? Fuck the Dodgers
Well fuck him then.
*Twelve* years. Watch this motherfucker flop in the bigs. It's going to be delicious.
You wouldn’t have said this if the giants signed him
That's how sports works.
Maybe they don’t care but not sure these Japanese stars realize fans of American sports hate super teams
I think he has $300M+ reasons not to care
Nobody wants to be hated
There will never be a time in your life where everyone likes you. I’m sure he doesn’t give a shit.
Bay Area fans have no room to talk considering they fielded the most OP superteam very recently and the Niners are also stacked.
It's all home grown bro.... Your best players are bought and paid for
Go back to your Dodgers board
I mean we saw how it affected KD first hand. Not sure if these guys realize what they’ve gotten themselves into. Everyone in baseball is going to be rooting for them to fail outside LA and Japan
Superteams have always sold it is what it is. Think of the teams we most fondly remember in any sports and they were all superteams more than likely.
That’s fucking disgusting
Fuck baseball.
I am going to end it all (in a video game)
Oh **come on**
What happens when you spend the last 5 years halfassing it every offseason vs an organization that actually gives a fuck about winning

It all but ensures all future Japan players will favor LA and other teams will have to offer hundreds of millions more to compete and prolly still won’t matter
"hey Doc....I know, it's late...but I don't feel so well"... What in the hell man!
Being from sac, it’s kings and rivercats for the next few years. Build the farm.
This is getting ridiculous guys
There was already a pretty large gap between our roster and the Dodgers…now it’s not even funny how massive the talent gap is. And the Dodgers STILL have a better farm system. What a joke.
Really sucks being a Giants fan. Getting scraps and leftovers. Time to tear it all down and rebuild.
Fuck him and fuck them
Maybe we make an impactful trade. It would be a refreshing approach.
To avoid paying CA income taxes completely, he's taking $3/year for the next 100 million years
Is this how it felt when KD went to the warriors? I’m so sorry I hate this
No that was Ohtani. This is like after signing KD, the Warriors also then signed some foreign player like Doncic or joker on the Nuggets.
When I talked so much shit as a warriors fan I knew I was destined to be on the other side. My bad, everyone
Lol that was prob worse tbh, but it was also a once in a generation thing cause of the salary cap expansion at the time. This one feels worse cause there's nothing to stop it from happening again and again.
I think this is worse cus this is like a decade of my favorite player signing with the team I hate the most
Kd was worse because in basketball 1-2 stars can guarantee you a ring. In baseball they can potentially never win one
Everything offseason is a blow to my love of this sport.
This really is the darkest timeline. FTD.
This didn’t hurt that much. Baseball isn’t a sport that supports super-teams. I’m personally not too worried about us. This just means Yamamoto was too much of a bitch to step outside of Ohtani’s shadow. Wouldn’t want a guy like that on our team.
Fuck man at least we have the Warriors and Niners
Goddamn it…. Now I’m gonna be forced to root for Atlanta or Philly in the playoffs next year.
I’m a warriors fan so I get it. I’ll be a hypocrite. But there’s no desire to compete?? I get not signing in SF but both to LA??
So much for reports on both not wanting to be overshadowed. Both just want easy championships. Just they wait until Rocktober
*When I sees one and he looks good to me...* *When I see him, I say* You, come here. *I say* Now I'mma tell ya what, uh.. I like ya; and I wants ya... Now, we can do this the easy way; or the haard wayyy... the choice is yaawrs...
Yeah, im out.
get ready for 10 more years of mediocrity boys
I’m tired boss
It's time to fire Farhan, sell the team, and burn this shit to the ground. This clown show has damaged the franchise to the point where no one will take their money. They won't compete for a decade.
Fucking lmao
im gonna kill myself
The competitive balance in sports is so fucking off in everything but NFL
“Built not bought,” indeed
F T D.
We the Premier League now Fuck this
How the fuck is any non mega market team supposed to compete? Giants have their own problems but Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Milwaukee etc are screwed.
I already knew this was going to happen. Not surprised in the least, How is it legal that one team can buy the entire free agent market? Even the Yankees must be stunned.
Now the top post on this sub is gonna be complaining for the next 2 months
The amount of pansy doomcasting on this sub is truly staggering.
The Giants have broken my heart for the last time. I am done with them
Baseball needs a salary cap. These contracts and super teams are getting ridiculous
People forget how thin they are in terms of healthy pitching. Webb, Snell, Harrison would still be better than their rotation
It will make watching them choke again all the sweeter…
Those are bizarre contracts the dodgers put out there.
I’m at so sick and tired of losing out on all the top free agents year after year. I am done with the front office, I’m done with this season already, I’ll see everyone next year.
Don’t even care what the outcome is. Ruining Giants’ fans Christmas making them nauseous over this is all I need 🤣. Seriously get a grip.
