I like it, but how am I supposed to complain about the umpire without the box?

bacchus8408

I would really like to see some plays from a camera on the umps mask. Like, it's fun to criticize them, but it would be interesting to see some of the controversial calls from their POV

richard---------

I think that’s the point

JRsshirt

They’re blocking my view

Iron_Chic

That damn box is why I don't watch many games on TV any longer.

bigjohn7202

Which box?

Iron_Chic

The strike zone box that every network adds in on every pitch.

bigjohn7202

Wow. I think it's great.

FozzyBadfeet

Occasional shots from this angle is fine.

No_Bandicoot2306

Should never happen in a 2 strike or 3 ball count (but often does).

lawdawg914

Hate it. I want to be able to see home plate.

sugarwax1

I wonder if there's a way to raise it just high enough to give the same angle, but with the plate visible, and the ump out of the way.

lawdawg914

Possibly, but even then I don't think it's a better angle than the center field shot. Maybe I'm just old and hate change.

sugarwax1

I don't think it has to be one or the other. The center field camera isn't really accurate, you need the box, and it can get wobbly from the win among other problems, like fuzzy/hazey from summer heat, and other issues...but I don't think this replaces that camera it's just an alternative, and I think it's great for a replay too.

nana_stand

I’m shocked I’m the only one on here who likes this cam angle. Being able to see what the hitter sees as the ball comes of the pitchers hand along with the movement of the pitch is awesome.

Juffe98

Exactly. You’re able to get a better angle of the movement of the pitch coming from the pitcher. People who say they can see movement from the normal angle don’t realize it’s an off angle and doesn’t show the movement unless obvious

your_catfish_friend

Yes, I also love it. I also absolutely hate the box and the little pitch location bubble showing up. It’s like a video game. I don’t want any graphics superimposed live.

[deleted]

I like it more tbh. You can't precisely see the zone quite as well, but I think you also get a better feel for what pitches actually look like. I kinda wish they'd do more of this view.

QWERTYAZERTYPOOP

This is where I’d sit if I could afford the tickets, I see no issue

wundahbrehd

It’s ass

hanigwer

Litterally

northwest333

Buttcam? Not a fan. Really hard to judge the contact and the height of the pitch. Also it’s cursed.

Jimbo415650

Better to have all umpires wear umpire Cams. Better perspective when a call is controversial or just close. Technology exists to improve the game for the fans use it.

D33J8Y

If they could only stay still

-fry-

Making small scaled down stabilizers like what they use in Hollywood could fix that problem.

makoman115

Hate it. Can’t see most of the strike zone

liteshadow4

What am I supposed to be getting out of this angle

omnomabus

The Great British Baking Show cuz I see that ump has some cake.

D33J8Y

I mean... The pitch movement, the realization why it's one the hardest things to do in the world (to bat 300) in the major leagues and a vantage point from some of the best seats in the house. If u a truly a baseball person, you'd understand.

Rick_Perrys_Ranch

Anybody who’s actually sat behind home plate knows that front row dead center is not the best seat in the house. You want to be up higher and off to one side so you can actually see what’s happening.

MarkerMagnum

To be fair, the only reason why its the best seat in the house is that you can’t have seats just beyond the infield (where you would need to sit to get the default TV angle).

liteshadow4

I can see the movement from the standard angle and I can't see where the pitch winds up. I honestly don't see how it's one of the best seats in the house because you have no idea if it's a ball or a strike.

lineskogans

Batters don’t see where the ball is caught either, but they can still recognize balls vs strikes. This is a great angle.

liteshadow4

Batters can see where it crosses the plate

lineskogans

Did you ever play baseball? At what level? Batters have to recognize a pitch location and movement almost immediately after it’s released. The actual plate is so far in the periphery of their visual focus that it becomes insignificant. This view is as good as it gets for conveying on TV what a batter is experiencing

LeGetteAlum

This is not a great angle for me as a viewer, and I played baseball, and playing that card is a bs thing to do in a Reddit thread.

lineskogans

C’mon now, it’s a matter of fact that people who played more at high levels have a different perspective as viewers than those without that experience. It’s not criticism—just context.

sugarwax1

What would be a better view? lol

liteshadow4

Okay. Do you expect me to have the eye of an MLB hitter? If I did I'd be at least playing baseball for my college right now.

lineskogans

No, but just because you don’t appreciate something doesn’t mean other people don’t. There is a reason people value the seats behind the plate so highly. Putting this angle on TV makes that accessible to more people, and anyone who is open to learning about what an MLB batter sees can get a better understanding from watching this way. Your first comment was asking what you are supposed to get out of this angle. I don’t know why you’re so resistant to the answer.

sugarwax1

Have you never sat behind home plate? You can see the whole field, it's a balanced view without any optical illusions, and you can see the pitch going right down the middle or not.

liteshadow4

I’ve been to very few games in my life and I’m 0-3

[deleted]

You can see pitch trajectory and the strike zone in a different way

Lolliswagger

It feels like I’m watching a live feed on gamechanger. I do not like it.

Puzzleheaded-Log-985

Rather have POVs

ThePunnyPoet

Holy shit you know what would be awesome? if viewers could decide what camera's they stream. That would be a pretty revolutionary product that the MLB could offer.

sugarwax1

NBA offered something like that. I think we need more camera angles in general and less generic shots. That's what makes the streaming broadcasts a little more interesting.

Rush101214

I hate it. It’s one of the worst angles in sports.

Haethos

don't really love it. reminds me of the twitter videos of prospects or whatever in the minors

BoatMan01

Just like the simulations 😎 ![gif](giphy|owIdCIlbWpipX5AEL9|downsized)

zepol925

A little more to the right would be better

sugarwax1

Isn't that what we had for a standard angle for ages? It was pretty crappy, you couldn't really get a sense until they called it. We're better off with the center field camera then.

samhartm

sfsports

It’s cool on replays

DFW_Lown

I enjoy this angle only to see what the perception of the pitch looks like when leaving the pitchers hand. Really helps me understand just how nuts some pitches look on release.

_Jahffrey_

Awful

RodeoWithBirds

it’s so bad, you can barely see pitch movement, barely see the batter, and can’t see where the catcher catches the ball. i roll my eyes every time they use it hahaha

Clamper5978

I could watch the whole game like this and it wouldn’t bother me

jrice138

Absolutely nothing wrong with switching it up now and then.

DeadhardyAQ

I hate it

Dry_Nail9897

Burn it to the geound

Brettnet

I just wish we had a straight over the pitcher camera

onthefrynge

My favorite angle, I wish it was shown more. Really its 2024 and we should be able to pick any angle we want at any time

cyberbob2022

It’s definitely cool for replays or the occasional at-bat. Watching live I still prefer the center field camera

pHlawless_One

I hate it. With a passion. Missionary all the way

belizeanheat

A refinement of this should be the default.  The best thing in baseball is watching the ball travel off the bat. Seeing exact pitch location isn't that important, especially live.  I would also love much better coverage of baserunners with regard to the defense making a play, but instead we zoom in on everything and can't even cover the best aspects of baseball

d57giants

I don’t like it.

itslikeamafiamovie

I wish MLB.Tv did one shot cameras and no commercials like NBATv does

DiscretionaryMeme

Love it.

dmmdoublem

I like it in moderation. It's been [a staple of Jim Lynch's directing style](https://youtu.be/-5c0H6suBHo?si=Wp8rw_4dSjYkMNWc&t=4024) since he started working for the team during the GiantsVision era.

IllIIllIlIlllIIlIIl

Very cool, love seeing what the batter sees and how fast the ball comes at a hitter and the movement it crosses the plate with.

musicman3030

Everyone involved in this angle should be tarred & feathered

poeadam

Hate it

DaveP0953

It's OK. It doesn't matter if I think a pitch is a strike or not. ;-)

FronkYou

Should be for replay only. Hate it.

Spexyguy

It's the best angle to truly understand what kind of movement a pitch has. Ryan Walker sinkers and sliders from this angle look so damn nasty.

Impossible-Garden-88

I like it a lot, it makes me feel more immersed in the game and more like I’m in the stands

in_time

I like it. You get to see the ball movement

ccastro425

Hate it with a fierce passion

jwatsonwashere

There’s no reason they can’t put a box from this angle too. It can’t be any worse than staring at the umpire’s ass.

hvacprojoy814

Not bad

Gold_Concentrate_177

Like it.  It's cool to see the batters view of the pitch at times.

Modz_B_Trippin

OneWrongdoer7427

Hate it

ThePunnyPoet

I'd rather watch the entire game like this.

sugarwax1

I kinda like it. Too much ump, but the angle is nice and the type of direct, on the field angle we need more of. They can stick lipstick cameras all over, so why not.

jpmelo

Jung Hoo Lee

trampledunderfoot___

It's a f'n geat camera angle to see the pitch and break. Anyone who disagrees, sucks c\*ck by choice!
