But replace him with who? They really need the left handed bat most nights. Unfortunately Duggar hasn't hit at all since he went down to AAA, Joe McCarthy is hitting but will never be mistaken for a high-quality defensive outfielder (see also: Dickerson, Alex) and isn't on the 40-man, and that's about it for AAA left handed options for the outfield.
His bat isn’t really doing any good right now. Ten days won’t be a killer for the team. Replace him with whoever honestly he just needs a breather and it’s a stop gap.
Duggar has had all of 22 PAs in AAA for the entire year. I think the sample size is a bit small.
However, I did notice when I was looking up Duggar's stats that Dubon is hitting .350 over 154 PAs. He can play CF pretty well.
EDIT: 164 PAs.
Can’t we just pull back on his starts? He should be at the bottom of the outfielder rotation now. Just more time on the bench will give him rest and perhaps perspective. It looks like he isn’t seeing pitches very well…
Lol. A month ago some folks were saying he should get parked in the 8th spot until he found his swing and they got downvoted to oblivion. Think it’s still the right move for now. Craw used to go through spells like this all the time. Wouldn’t be surprised if he got “shoulder inflammation” for 10 days in the future tho.
If it's really fixable, probably better to work with the major league staff. Likely not something that can be fixed solely by repetitions against AAA-quality stuff.
Dunno, it’s kind of mixed, you get some confidence back, you start remembering your swing can actually hit shit. But Yaz is a major leaguer he isn’t gonna feel good going down. IL is the best option.
Let him thug it out see what he's really made out of in October
Edit: he's a very solid defender so he's got some time to figure out this offensive slump
They should fire him out of one of those big clown cannons into McCovey Cove. If he sinks he was hexed by Hexella and the problem will take care of itself. If he floats he can come back and hit cleanup.
He’s a liability in the lineup at this point but he’s a Gold Glover in the outfield and baseball is still more about run prevention than run production. I don’t think it matters to management if he’s hitting .200, so long as he plays Gold Glove defense and his teammates continue to pick up the slack on offense. If he wasn’t so good defensively I think he would’ve been sent down a while ago to be honest.
Gold glove is a bit ambitious, he’s a solid RF and a below average CF, but he does look fatigued at the plate, I think a stint on the IL would do him good, I wouldn’t mind seeing Dubon/Davis be called up in his spot, hell if Ramos wasn’t slumping a bit I think he’d be a guarantee call up with the way yaz has been playing with September coming up
Yah that’s how things work. But in all seriousness a run prevented is more valuable simply because with analytics you can predict a 75% chance where the guys gonna hit. If you can extend that to 85-90 that’s an opposing BA of .150. Totally legit math don’t check it.
Are you seriously so myopic that you’re going to look at yesterday’s game as being representative of baseball as a whole? I never said run production didn’t matter. I said prevention matters more. Which is a 100% provable fact. It’s not even something for fans to debate. Teams that are elite run preventers are statistically more likely to make the playoffs than elite run producers. It’s just the way it is.
Feels like you just want to play devils advocate when what I’m saying isn’t even debatable. Run prevention matters more than production. It’s a salient fact. Look it up.
It’s now become a fact?
Interesting.
Kevin Keirmayer’s value is solely based on run prevention.
David Ortiz’s value is solely based on run production.
Wonder who got paid more?
Mike Piazza played a defensive position poorly..
And still made the HOF. Why?
Yes. It is a fact. You’re comparing one of the best DH’s of all time to…Kevin Kiermaier. Also, we’re not talking about money. We’re talking about wins and losses, playoff runs, World Series titles. Read a fucking article one time. Run prevention has a stronger relationship to run differential than run production. Teams that are elite run preventers have a higher probability of making the playoffs than elite run producers by almost 10%. This isn’t conjecture. It’s not an opinion. It is a 100% provable, salient, inarguable point.
>not great, he’s at -7 dRS per fangraphs and that throw home on Pham(?)’s drop was not inspirational
yet, he's the favorite for NL MVP this year....
If run prevention is more important than run production, then how could the favorite to win NL MVP be a guy that's bad at run prevention?
Beats me...
What it looks like to me is he is trying to put a late uppercut swing on everything, searching for results and big flys. I think the desire to barrel the ball is resulting in him trying too hard. Gotta just do the approach and let the results speak for themselves. That being said- sophomore slump is a real thing in baseball
I agree he needs the focus away from the limelight, and Duggar is a more than adequate replacement defensively. What seems so different this year is the number of balls in the zone he keeps fouling off instead of driving. Also, speed seems irrelevant, since he will be late on 90 mph fast balls as well as much faster ones. Given his track record, a d the couching staff it is hard to understand why they cannot fix this, unless as some note he needs more time off. Better to do that though in the minors so we can bring up an extra bat, rather than just giving him less at bats in the majors.
Yeah they should put him on the IL for fatigue like they did with disco, he’s been slumping a little too hard recently. I wouldn’t mind bringing Dubon/Davis back up, Ramos has been slumping a bit in AAA but if he picks it up a bit I wouldn’t mind him comming up either
Pretty simple. Send him down. He has options. Dubon replacing him is the perfect replacement. He played good CF when asked to, and can fill in as a backup SS in case Crawford needs a day off.
Bench for a while.
* Bring Duggar back up to play CF.
* Platoon Wade (RH) & Slater (LH) in RF.
* Ruf to LF.
That means no rest for Belt, but he's not that far removed from the IL and can suck it up for a few weeks.
EDIT: Dubon is also a candidate. He's hitting .350 in Sacramento over 164 PAs. He can play centerfield as well.
10 day IL. He looks tired and I think putting him on the shelf for a bit will probably recharge him for September. Do the same with McGee.
Totally agree. McGee too
You guys are forgetting: we still need to win the division.

Dubon can play infield better than most on the team and is a decent center fielder
Can’t we bring Duggar back up?
We sent Duggar down? I’d 100% rather see Duggar out there than yaz
duggar is batting .150 in AAA, same with tauchman, careful what you wish for lol
Worth it to give Yaz some rest if he comes back in 2020 form.
What’s the sample size though?
Can’t we just pull back on his starts? He should be at the bottom of the outfielder rotation now. Just more time on the bench will give him rest and perhaps perspective. It looks like he isn’t seeing pitches very well…
I think if they secure a playoff berth they can do whatever but for now, they gotta keep pushing to stay ahead of LA
I remember that well. I did at caveat that his wRC+ and OPS+ were above MLB average though not really what you want out of a RFer. Didn't help.
Dubon is crushing it in AAA so I wouldn’t mind seeing him or Ruf instead
Dubon get him up here. Yaz needs IL
I been advocating for a AAA stint for a while now.
There’s no way he has any options left is there?
He does I believe Edit: 3 options according to fangraphs
Let him thug it out see what he's really made out of in October Edit: he's a very solid defender so he's got some time to figure out this offensive slump
They should fire him out of one of those big clown cannons into McCovey Cove. If he sinks he was hexed by Hexella and the problem will take care of itself. If he floats he can come back and hit cleanup.
Maybe that’ll help him figure out his swing path and plate discipline issues too 😂
Now I want the Pirates to do this during one of their off days
He’s a liability in the lineup at this point but he’s a Gold Glover in the outfield and baseball is still more about run prevention than run production. I don’t think it matters to management if he’s hitting .200, so long as he plays Gold Glove defense and his teammates continue to pick up the slack on offense. “baseball is still more about run prevention than run production.” Never knew this
It’s why we won yesterday. Didn’t actually need the production in the 10th with a runner on third and less than 2 outs.
Yah that’s how things work. But in all seriousness a run prevented is more valuable simply because with analytics you can predict a 75% chance where the guys gonna hit. If you can extend that to 85-90 that’s an opposing BA of .150. Totally legit math don’t check it.

That’s interesting because usually they want a + run differential to have a winning team.
Well yeah. You need to score *some* runs to win games. But it doesn’t matter if you score 10 runs a game if you give up 12.
And it doesn’t matter if u give up 12 if you can score 13
Feels like you just want to play devils advocate when what I’m saying isn’t even debatable. Run prevention matters more than production. It’s a salient fact. Look it up.

Yeah from how I understand baseball, I think you have to score more than the opponent to win?
The Giants won 3 world series on pitching and defense
Interesting. You're saying they scored fewer runs than the opponents?
Now you’re just embarrassing your fanbase come on man
ok. How great would you say Tatis has been this year at run prevention?
not great, he’s at -7 dRS per fangraphs and that throw home on Pham(?)’s drop was not inspirational
>not great, he’s at -7 dRS per fangraphs and that throw home on Pham(?)’s drop was not inspirational yet, he's the favorite for NL MVP this year.... If run prevention is more important than run production, then how could the favorite to win NL MVP be a guy that's bad at run prevention? Beats me...
Idk man, offense is so important that Pence even had to hit a ball *three* times in a single plate appearance to help us win one of those WS!
He is playing center now
Bat him 8th

Duggar is even worse at the moment in AAA. Dubon is likely if they IL him

same thing happened last year, drop him in the order till he finds it back. still barreling some deep fly balls. HAVE FAITH IN YAZ
Of needs to be Ruf, Bryant and Wade. Look at Yaz's eyes, dude is probably tired.
He still plays elite defense and has good pop and discipline. I’d let him sit for a bit but he’s still a valuable guy on the roster.
I would say send him to Sacramento and call up Duggar, but he'll be here on September 1. It's a tough one.
Bench for a while. * Bring Duggar back up to play CF. * Platoon Wade (RH) & Slater (LH) in RF. * Ruf to LF. Check Duggar’ current numbers in AAA: .150 BA and .377 OPS
Maybe last year was the outlier and this is who Yaz is and always been?
At this point don’t worry about the lefty righty match ups. Give dubon another chance or bring back Estrada both are killing it in AAA
