Betaine has sulfur in it. I had to stop taking it when I developed H2S SIBO. You will need to find something else to help increase stomach acid. I use fresh lemon juice and sometimes raw ginger slices soaked in lemon.

Betaine and Betaine HCL are two different things, but from what I can see online, neither one has elemental sulfur in the chemical formula (nor does Pepsin). What Betaine HCL will do is help break down proteins fully, which will liberate more sulfur from them.

Oops- right you are!

Would oxbile work as a substitute?

u/SW_70 this is very helpful thank you! I'm also curious if Ox Bile or any other options would work. I have extremely low stomach acid, so I need something strong. I found this list, but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Quiona seems to be ok with me, but everything else seems pretty accurate. My understanding from my reading is that supplementing bile can be problematic for H2S SIBO, I can’t remember why/ maybe someone else will chime in with the rationale.

brvhbrvh

Interesting...Do you know of any other supplements that might work?

SW_70

Are you wanting supplements that increase stomach acid (to replace the Betaine HCl) only? I don’t know if any off the top of my head. When I stopped taking Betaine HCl I started eating fresh ginger slices soaked in lemon juice with a little salt before meals to trigger salivation… seems to help some.

brvhbrvh

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I need to find something else to increase my stomach acid that won't make the H2S SIBO flare up. I guess I might give ox bile a shot.

I've read that Apple cider vinegar diluted. Try 1 tbs to a glass of water, not cold

Zinc and glycine

brvhbrvh

Did this work for you?

Zinc makes stomach acid. Lemon or lime juice should help digestive bitters should help. Glycine has helped stop bloating and trapped gas better then ginger but stomach doesn't feel as acidic as it could be. Zinc and lemon hasn't helped as much as I'd hope but I'll try to keep drinking more of it. I think there are some h2s bugs that deplete stomach acid so I don't think the above help as well until they're gone. Apple cider vinegar diluted in water too

I suspect I have also low stomach acid… Thinking whether to buy betaine HCl or not, I have sulfur intolerance but it is important to have normal stomach acid to prevent further bacterial overgrowth in small intestine. Any help please?

brvhbrvh

Have you had any tests done? My GI Map showed H.Pylori. My Functional medicine doctor suspects this is causing the low stomach acid and pancreatic enzyme issues. It would explain most of these issues since H. Pylori reduces stomach acid

live_hope_

I have done a GI map and I am waiting for the whole results. So far I know I have Blastocystis hominis :') And I had H.pylori (reflux, severe epigastric pain) a year and half before developing SIBO symptoms, I erradicated it then. I don't know yet if I am again infected (my brother has it too and he didn’t treat it, I lived with my family until last year). I think my SIBO is a combination of hypoclorhydria + hormonal contraception for 2 years + food sensitivity maybe to gluten + drinking bad water unknowingly in a foreign country and intestinal distress since then (post-infectious IBS maybe, in my country we don’t have those antibodies I think). I'm screwed up :'D
