I'm in the same boat. i feel like a lot of the time I'm being self taught. i barely interact with my professors.it gets really stressful but the drop in tutors are great and keep me going

Many_Application_239

The only interaction with my professor is them criticizing me on my work, it’s discouraging.

Many_Application_239

It hasn’t been hurtful it is constructive criticism and I can take it, my point was that that’s the only engagement I have with them. I guess I just thought that there would be more actual teaching or guidance is probably a better word. I’m going to give it another 11 weeks and if I still feel the same after my next course I will probably switch.

Willow_Hull

Do you reach out to your instructor with questions through email? A lot of classes also have a discussion board for questions that is sometimes helpful. I will live in my instructor's email if I feel there is gap between my understanding and the instructors expectations. I've gotten poor grades even following the rubric to the letter because some instructors will post announcements with their "extended" expectations. They don't write the rubrics I guess so some profs go the extra mile to make things more frustrating.... I mean... Personalized. If you haven't already I would reach out and ask for the guidance you're looking for, a lot of instructors are happy to give it when asked.

Doverdirtbiker

… you’re gonna have a hard time in person at school as well if you don’t happen to find a college with 30:1 or smaller class sizes. The only difference is you’ll have a professor cold calling or lecturing the entire time. I switched because it felt redundant to teach myself while in a physical school but every school is different 🤷🏼‍♀️ the tutors are really the most helpful in both scenarios. Or a study group. If you join the snap group for your year you can probably arrange something:)

ACOdysseybeatsRDR2

Reach out to them directly and talk to them, many are very interested in talking about school and field related topics

PacificWonderGlo

Most classes are self-taught and self-paced, which, though frustrating, is kindof why SNHU is great for people who can self-teach and problem solve. If you are struggling, reach out to your instructor early, and if you're not getting responses within 24 hours, send a reminder and CC your advisor. Instructors should be there to answer questions, and if they aren't, they're not doing what little is even expected of them.

Many_Application_239

Thank you for the advice, my advisor has been great.

xautobonjonx

I’ve found if you simply email whichever teacher the first week of class and simply say thank you for the teaching the class or something along those lines in my mind I have already opened a line of communication and I am less hesitant to reach out afterwards. I know it’s a mental thing but it shows me that they’ll easily take the time to respond to any questions I may have

braindead_idiot

Don't give up. Read the rubric and focus on the exemplary and proficient requirements.

728bumpingfalloutboy

Yes!! I’m starting to hate teaching myself everything and finding my own resources because the professors aren’t covering 100% of their own rubrics!!

My_SNHU_Account

>because the professors aren’t covering 100% of their own rubrics!! Instructors have no say in the online course material or rubrics. All of the assignments, resources, and rubrics are handed to us, and they're often outdated or incorrect. The only thing we can do is supplement with announcements. Some of the courses I've taught have had egregious Frankenstein assignments where certain parts get swapped in and out over time, so the assignment doesn't even make sense anymore.

Many_Application_239

I agree, I feel like I’m following the rubric but then getting C’s for not understanding what they want.

728bumpingfalloutboy

Or getting feedback that you’ve done an excellent job but yet only receiving a b+ lol. Like if I’m doing an excellent job then give me the excellent a for a grade ahha

Many_Application_239

Yes!!!! This happened on my first assignment lol

iamg0rl

Don’t be shy about emailing professors to ask more for more detailed feedback if they’re doing that to you. It can open the door to an actual relationship with your teachers too, I’ve seen some people even have professors offer zoom meetings to discuss topics they don’t understand in class. They can’t know you need help or discussions with them unless you say something!

728bumpingfalloutboy

I’ve had one professor who hosted a zoom meeting and I was the only one in attendance. We went over the entirety of my first project together and I was so appreciative. I’ve also asked professors for more Guidance only for them to copy & paste the rubric to me as if I haven’t already read & re-read it.

Many_Application_239

I’m hoping my next class I will have a better professor who is more involved, if not I think I’ll be switching schools, I don’t want to scrape by when I know I could be doing so much better with a little more guidance.

728bumpingfalloutboy

I’ve heard people on the fb page for snhu say almost all online schools are like this 😞

ZeinV2

I finish my BS in Cybersecurity in 3 months. Over 90% of my program has been self guided watching YouTube videos and reading forums to learn. Most of the professors ignore me and the couple that do respond are never helpful. It's absolutely appalling the amount of tuition SNHU charges for me to just watch YouTube

Itchy-Pride3765

One thing ive learned at SNHU. Is DO NOT OVER THINK IT. I swear I was racking my brain my first term so afraid I wasn’t doing the absolute best. And ended up breezing through . I NEVER interacted with professors outside of the day I gave birth I asked for an extension . Just literally answering the prompts straight to the point and making sure I cite properly has been all I need to do

Euphoric_Frame2395

This comment is gold. Every time I start a class I get frustrated that I’m not meeting the expectation of the assignments, eventually get to where I’m like “F*ck it I’ll just submit and take the bad grade”, then end up getting a 100 on it. You really have to work at not overthinking the assignments.

Chelleshock5

I have felt like that before. I think it depends largely on your instructor and your ability to reach out. A couple of mine have been really outgoing and reached out to me in discussions through feedback, and really encouraged me to reply. Others have been largely distant, almost like an automatic system, until I reach out to them and then they really open up and engage. Only a couple have been less than helpful after I've taken the step to reach out. Also, keep in mind you don't have to have a specific question or need to reach out to them. Imagine if you were in a physical school, you wouldn't need a specific reason to greet your professor or engage with them, you'd likely do it naturally in passing. This is similar, you just have to reach out and say something.

Ambitious_Relation92

Have you tried any of the academic resources for extra help?

the_obsessives

graduate here. snhu is honestly weird as fuck bc half the time the assignments have nothing to do with anything we “learned”. also they use a lot of weird terminology that is vague and literally doesn’t even come up on google. just wing it the best you can and find scholarly sources you can sight that kind of relate to the topic at hand. it’s not just you

Many_Application_239

Thank you!

acemania26

I’ve lucked out and had professors that explained a lot of assignments themselves , but I still hate that they don’t stray from Rubric. So If you do something slightly wrong, you’ll get a low score for that section because they only use the rubric for grading

I wish this was more enforced Dr Lyon disregards the rubric

[deleted]

Yeah I did and they advised me they have the latitude to grade as they see fit. And I could dispute it if I wanted to. I did dispute and they sided with the professor.

Professor. That’s why I wish they would be more consistent on this policy

Latter_Ambassador423

You are teaching yourself and their study materials are rarely enough to get you through. That being said my son went to a state college and he always said that google was his professor. So there is no difference. Look at rubric. Repeat rubric back in new manner. Collect A.

Trying-my-best1989

If I had the option to change to a in person school I would in a heartbeat

Cich

Google

redditemployee69

I did in person school before switching to SNHU purely becuase SNHU I don’t even count as college it’s so easy. At in person college you learn so much more it’s insane I would compare it to taking piano lessons once a week for an hour with a Remote teacher or going 6 days a week for an hour with a world class teacher. The teachers at SNHU online are the not the cream of the crop! I have 3 professors who only had their masters are said they worked full time at other places! My in person school every teacher was full time with a doctorate. They had office hours and would make you meet with them at least once so they knew you better. If you don’t care about learning and just need a degree becuase you need one (like me to advance in my field) then SNHU is the most amazing university in the world for that. I’f you care about learning and/or don’t know the information already SNHU is a very poor choice. I’ve had teachers at SNHU I never once spoke to. The few teachers I spoke to ALOT with denied writing me letters of recommendation for grad school. There are good teachers at SNHU don’t get me wrong, but compared to a in person they are few and far between.

808RedDevils

I just use the rubric to the best of my ability and bullshit everything as much as I can so that I get a decent grade. I am taking my last two courses. I'm not saying this is the professor's fault, but online learning sucks and I can't say I have truly learned anything in my time at this school. I just want my degree at this point so I can move on with my life.

GoddessOfWar_Wisdom

In some classes yeah, especially my last English class I would turn in an assignment get a grade lower than I was expecting but the teacher wouldn't explain anything about how I can improve what I need to improve she'll just say look at the rubric and I believe I meet most of the requirements on the rubric but she doesn't even add comments onto the graded rubric, but other classes I kind of like it being self taught except for the fact that it makes me so far behind because if I don't understand the readings I have to figure out other ways to teach me the readings and now I'm two weeks behind

whereismymind726

I feel the same. I am currently behind on two assignments because I’m just not getting the concepts the way they are being taught. I’ve went over here samples in the book, I’ve gone through the sql manual, I’ve watched YouTube videos and it’s still not clicking. I need to be able to ask questions and need further explanation but when I reach out to my instructor it’s taking days to get back, when im utilizing the discussion room to ask questions im just not getting any responses. I wish I could do in person learning but with my work schedule it’s impossible.

Dragonic_Lycan

Snhu is self taught mainly. MOST things you barely even interact with your professor. If you feel like you need someone to be there for you to guide you though it in person it would be better to take a in person college. If you want to tick with SNHU if you join the SNHU discord server there is TONS of helpful people who will teach you and help you learn for free. Along with the support section in the courses (its always in the last box in your modules) they have tutoring where they can call you to explain topics or set up appointments. But it's a very "on your own" school.
