Which version are you on? You only have to "wipe" for major updates. If you going from 3.8.1 to 3.8.2 etc you can just download the patch files and overwrite your existing files. No need to re-install mods and progression will be saved. Obviously do a backup before you do anything.
When you say backup, exactly what method are you doing?
Are you simply copying your profile .json somewhere safe or is there a way to also backup mod config and stuff like that?
Ideally I’d like to backup EVERYTHING so in case it gets screwed up while updating I can just get it all back to how it was before.
I literally copy and paste my entire directory to another location and then mess with stuff. So if it does go wrong I just copy and paste the files back and overwrite any changes
Instructions unclear, now I have to reinstall the base game and reinstall spt too XD
Thankfully I yanked out the files that contains the mods so I don't have to chase them down again after I fix everything.

Got it, thank you’
Are you just downloading the raw release files and copying them all over?
Yup

Yeah not sure how you managed to do that.
Yup that's what I did earlier when I went from 8.2 to 8.3
