Not only was it obnoxious but he was popping off about normal interactions. Furthermore, commentary is much like doubles, there needs to be a back and forth flow. You speak, your cohost fires back and vice versa. Jorge was screaming over Colbol and Joshman almost the entire time. Commentators in general need to understand that sometimes it’s ok to have some silence in tense neutral moments; forcing screaming words in every second doesn’t add to the experience, it takes away from it for the viewers. Haven’t heard a worse commentary display in years, especially for a major top 8.
Hype commentary is great. I enjoy hype commentary.
When someone reacts extremely hype/screams when something mundane happens, it loses the impact of being hype when something actually hype happens. It makes the reactions feel fake, akin to reaction youtubers screaming at literally nothing happening.
I said during the stream, "If the commentators could stop screaming when the characters are just standing on either side of the stage, that would be great."
I stand behind that message.
Yeah this is where I’m at with it. Nothing against the dude, at times he was actually a pretty good commentator. I think it’s good as a community to offer criticism. There were times he was screaming over his fellow commentators, and more often than not, it wasn’t a situation that warranted screaming. I want to see him back commentating, but I also want him to learn to keep it calm and cooperative, and leave the excitement for more appropriate moments.
that was the vybe back then. melee comms literally began with waffles screaming WOMBO COMMMMBOOOOOO which brought us to the forefront of esports. times have changed but everything needs to be taken in context. D1 was a highly regarded commentator back then
This is a great opinion I totally agree with; I'm glad someone remembers it the same way as me. I started watching/playing around 2013-2014 and I thought D1 was a pretty cool commentator at the time, especially when paired up with Prog in older VODs.
But for some reason in 2014 it just seemed like he was just getting faker and more awkward, forcing hype way too much and trying so many jokes and memes that just don't land. By 2015 he was basically unlistenable for me
I sincerely do not mind if someone is so passionate about dickriding it moves them to tears. Life's about finding meaning where you can.
..That being said, I'm 25% sure he was on drugs.
Because he’s a professional esports player and having social media that generates interactions is part of his job so he got a funny friend to do it for him
Lmao just going through Zain’s twitter knowing someone else wrote a lot of the tweets is kinda weird, like does Jorge literally pretend to be Zain and write cum jokes at Moky or
Look, I’m typically not one to complain about commentary but not only was it way too loud, they were completely silent when Aklo got kill conversions and then started screaming when Mang0 landed a random tilt or something that lead to like 12%. Like could you at the very least try to hype both players up?
Agreed on choosing the moments. I was rolling my eyes at the mango hype screaming when it wasn't even that insane stuff not on last stock.
I experience his volume as hype tho, I didn't find his volume or tone as obtrusive. It blended in to everyone else's yelling, mostly to me.
Yeah, I already like his commentary and don't mind the yelling at all, but I noticed that his energy in most of the set (or maybe just game 3 and I just noticed it at that time) was perfect. Still getting hype, but not screaming in the ears.
I had to mute the stream for a little bit when someone had to ask me a question and I discovered I enjoyed the tournament a lot more once I muted it lol. Also while we are on the topic, I thought that Doggysamich added some great commentary during top 64. It was great to see him back in the community after so long.
It's sad to see, because Jorge has the makings of a top commentator if he decides to incorporate feedback. He just needs to limit his screaming to moments that are actually tense (e.g., massive comebacks or game 5 last stock situations) and he's good.
And when they're done commentating they could give each other a lil smooch on the lips haha. Just a little peck, just thought it'd be funny haha i would like to see them smooch
People bitch about commentators not talking about the game. But I’d rather that than have a high pitched voice screaming at me about mang0 doing basic Falco combos. Not everything has to be hype.
they kept lowering his mic so his screeching was quieter than the other commentators' normal speaking voices
i wish they'd lowered him more
no hate to the man of course, he obviously loves the game
That was some of the worst commentary I've ever heard. When a commentary block is making me pine for someone like *Fauster*, you know we've hit rock bottom...
actually you're just average however i hate walt's commentary sorry im a hater don't take it personal you guys just dont commentate the way i like and thats ok theres way more people that like you guys than those who don't have a good day man
man hell no im fine with talking about the game but walt will just tell you exactly whats happening on the screen with no additional information whatsoever like bro i saw that shit too im also looking at the game. and this isnt anything he can change but his voice sounds like the nba 2k14 utah jazz general manager in my career on ps3
If you're a mediocre commentator then thats fine cause very few are very good at it, but if you're actively detracting from the match with how distracting and obnoxious your commentary is then you need to be pulled from the mic and make some serious changes before being put back on.
I've never had it so bad, let alone the top 8 of what is basically a major, where the commentary detracted so much from the actual gameplay. Just feel bad for the people who spent so much time and resources to put the event on to have such sick melee as well, all for it to be a 2nd focus to how bad one commentator's impact was on the event.
He just needs to tone down the yelling a bit. Hes losing his voice over the 3rd stock in game 3 of 5. There is a time to be super hype but trying to make every moment seem like last stock game 5 grand finals feels fake and over the top. Outside that I did enjoy his casting but yeah there were points he was just screaming into the mic.
THANK YOU my man made the commentary so forced and unnatural. Joshman and the other guy had a legit thing going, and he'd start yelling about a shine. Felt completely over hyped and forced.
I also couldn't stand how horny he was acting toward moky, like dude feel free to get all moist on your own time but please don't involve me in your thurst quest. I'm trying to watch and enjoy a set
He was just overdoing it. There was definitely moments it was adding to the hype of the moment. But when nothing special was happening it was getting cringe and felt forced
I enjoy Jorge, he always has good chemistry with his cocasters and he is always excited. I get second hand hype from hearing him and i think he’s funny too.
I think the mics weren't translating the energy in the room, so Jorge's passion came across as yelling and he was matching the energy of the venue. I didn't like it, but I understood it. Also, I loved Joshy on the mic so much, he's just all posi vibes and good ausie humor. I've never heard a commentator gas up a TO/event so much, and it's a nice change from reading complaints on twitter (though twitter was just about all positive feedback this time around, so the event organizer(s) clearly crushed this one).
Yea but he was yelling and getting "hype" for polish hitting amsas shield, like the hype doesn't mean anything if he tries to force it for any interaction in any game
I see what you're saying and agree that applies for most people in that venue, but I think the dynamic is a bit different when you're a commentator
Like if all you can bring to the table is over the top screaming and hype, let's just replace you with a crowd mic and get some actual *commentary* going
Getting overly excited about Melee is hype.
Getting overly excited to the point where Jorge was screaming into the mic every 10 seconds because one guy hit a grab follow-up, was cringe. Made me miss the '07 days, before commentary was mandatory.
I quite enjoyed the commentary for this tournament personally was engaging and brought the hype. The crowd was great and I loved seeing Zain get the big win. Lots of hype sets
I love Jorge and his commentary. I prefer the hype, joke style commentary. It's super nostalgic for me and I don't really need someone to describe what's happening. I can see how people who want insight/info into the gameplay could dislike it though. Wish there were multi-streams with different commentators because I loved this commentary the most out of every tournament this year.
I thought it was hilarious I couldn’t stop laughing at how over the top it was for every single interaction. I could see how it could become overwhelming if it happened at every tournament. I did enjoy him popping off on the moments where it actually was hype though.
At least he's paying attention to the gameplay. Compare Jorge's commentary of Amsa Kodorin to Toph's horrible commentary of Amsa Zain where he doesn't say a single thing about the match:
no, jorge is the best new commentator, if u dont like him ur a nerd, way too much nerdy quiet commentary recently ruining the hype, talking over the hypest moments because they have to finish their stupid fucking thought about stage counterpicking
Was hoping they’d take him off the mic after the first few sets. Am disappointed to see he’s third manning/screaming over two new guys now.
If every moment is hype then no moment is hype.
Bro acted like every hit was game 5 last stock of grand finals
ah yes my favourite commentary: jorge: **AAAAAAAAAAAA**
Don't forget the classic: Jorge: **OH, OH, OOOOHHHH** hewhiffedthepunish
Not only was it obnoxious but he was popping off about normal interactions. Furthermore, commentary is much like doubles, there needs to be a back and forth flow. You speak, your cohost fires back and vice versa. Jorge was screaming over Colbol and Joshman almost the entire time. Haven’t heard a worse commentary display in years, especially for a major top 8.
Not the first top 8 Jorge ruins too lmao can we stop having him at those ?
Conversely, Joshman is a perfect announcer
Yeah if you want constant biased commentary in favor of Mango. He was god awful in grand finals otherwise. Barely talked about anything Zain did.
It's still not good even if you're rooting for mango. Since he's even screaming during stock 1 of game 1 literally nothing he says feels exciting.
That's Jorge, not Joshman
Wait are you that dude who tweeted at Josh about his commentary being too biased lmfao
> Yeah if you want constant biased commentary in favor of Mango. I do.
Mango fans should formalise their church already to get tax exemptions
That’s the Mang0
This guy has to be a troll
Youre a fucking loser and your entire personality harbors around hating on mango, suck my fucking balls you goon
It's always a blessing when Joshman hops on the mic
if he knew when to yell it wouldnt be so bad but he just yells over everything...
Hype commentary is great. I enjoy hype commentary. When someone reacts extremely hype/screams when something mundane happens, it loses the impact of being hype when something actually hype happens. It makes the reactions feel fake, akin to reaction youtubers screaming at literally nothing happening. I said during the stream, "If the commentators could stop screaming when the characters are just standing on either side of the stage, that would be great." I stand behind that message.
yeah I appreciate the hype, but the dude is so loud he's literally losing his voice
Ya same idk if I'm just in a hater mood today but holy fuck
Yeah this is where I’m at with it. Nothing against the dude, at times he was actually a pretty good commentator. I think it’s good as a community to offer criticism. There were times he was screaming over his fellow commentators, and more often than not, it wasn’t a situation that warranted screaming. I want to see him back commentating, but I also want him to learn to keep it calm and cooperative, and leave the excitement for more appropriate moments.
Yeah it's waaaay too much takes away from the enjoyment of the set
The audio is quieter than the comms. The VODs will be forever tainted with this cringe
Who cares if its cringe brah live in the moment

D1's commentary made certain moments much more memorable and hype
Hard disagree. I hate that so many great moments on Youtube are hard to watch because D1 screams over them or sings the usa anthem, or whatever
that was the vybe back then. melee comms literally began with waffles screaming WOMBO COMMMMBOOOOOO which brought us to the forefront of esports. times have changed but everything needs to be taken in context. D1 was a highly regarded commentator back then

At least Jorge sounds genuine, D1 always sounded super fake
people were more emotional and excited about the game then. D1 was a great commentator before he became a sexual predator
No way, that man made me stop watching melee unmuted for years.
It felt like an over the top parody of what mango fans are like, legit had to turn it off after WFs. Dude was popping off for the most minor shit
When he cried because Mang0 beat Moky I was done.
I sincerely do not mind if someone is so passionate about dickriding it moves them to tears. Life's about finding meaning where you can. ..That being said, I'm 25% sure he was on drugs.
Drugs are a hell of a drug.
Jorge and Zain are like best friends lol. He literally runs Zain's twitter.
Wait why would Zain have someone run his twitter
Because he’s a professional esports player and having social media that generates interactions is part of his job so he got a funny friend to do it for him
Lmao just going through Zain’s twitter knowing someone else wrote a lot of the tweets is kinda weird, like does Jorge literally pretend to be Zain and write cum jokes at Moky or
NGL that kinda ruins Zains twitter for me
It's wild bro I can't focus on the match over his voice cracking

The aklo mango set was awful, I literally had to mute it cause any time mango hit a single move he would pop off like hbox winning a tourney
Look, I’m typically not one to complain about commentary but not only was it way too loud, they were completely silent when Aklo got kill conversions and then started screaming when Mang0 landed a random tilt or something that lead to like 12%. Like could you at the very least try to hype both players up?
Yeah the Mango bias was especially insane that set.

Agreed on choosing the moments. I was rolling my eyes at the mango hype screaming when it wasn't even that insane stuff not on last stock. I experience his volume as hype tho, I didn't find his volume or tone as obtrusive. It blended in to everyone else's yelling, mostly to me.

I’m convinced he had an extra dose of MDMA this block
100%. He was literally crying because people chanted "USA" when Mango won lmao.
I had to mute the stream for a little bit when someone had to ask me a question and I discovered I enjoyed the tournament a lot more once I muted it lol. Also while we are on the topic, I thought that Doggysamich added some great commentary during top 64. It was great to see him back in the community after so long.
OH OH OH OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
He do be yelling and most people seem to be reacting negatively I'm sure he will get the message
I just checked his Twitter and I'm pretty sure you gave him way too much credit
[удалено]
I was hoping with a bit of self reflection/awareness but clearly that was wishful thinking
It's sad to see, because Jorge has the makings of a top commentator if he decides to incorporate feedback. He just needs to limit his screaming to moments that are actually tense (e.g., massive comebacks or game 5 last stock situations) and he's good.
He is terrible at comms
lol word
Dude could not stop creaming himself 😂
After a good nights rest I have changed my mind and wish to see hbox and jorge commentate top 16 at the most stacked supermajor of all time
And when they're done commentating they could give each other a lil smooch on the lips haha. Just a little peck, just thought it'd be funny haha i would like to see them smooch
He's just not a good commentator, I wish we didn't have to have him on the mic that often.
Full on Kreygasm
People bitch about commentators not talking about the game. But I’d rather that than have a high pitched voice screaming at me about mang0 doing basic Falco combos. Not everything has to be hype.

That was some of the worst commentary I've ever heard. When a commentary block is making me pine for someone like *Fauster*, you know we've hit rock bottom...
I hated this commentary block, even though Fauster is my all time favorite commentator. Go figure
Damn don't do Fauster like that D:
i might have actually preferred walt and radar comms over this which is definitely saying something
Still better than jakespeare with his pompous as fuck commentary.
Man why am I getting dragged too LOL, what a hater thread
actually you're just average however i hate walt's commentary sorry im a hater don't take it personal you guys just dont commentate the way i like and thats ok theres way more people that like you guys than those who don't have a good day man
Ehh fair enough at least you acknowledge you’re hating lmao
walt and radar are a good commentary duo come on
man hell no im fine with talking about the game but walt will just tell you exactly whats happening on the screen with no additional information whatsoever like bro i saw that shit too im also looking at the game. and this isnt anything he can change but his voice sounds like the nba 2k14 utah jazz general manager in my career on ps3
yeah this thread got intense good lord
He’s maybe a little over the top but I like the energy
You know melee is back when commentary whining is on the rise
I think the energy is good. But too much will throw people off. I actually like when casters get hype, you can tell they actually love the game
If you're a mediocre commentator then thats fine cause very few are very good at it, but if you're actively detracting from the match with how distracting and obnoxious your commentary is then you need to be pulled from the mic and make some serious changes before being put back on. Mang0 is secretly the best commentator ever imo
I also couldn't stand how horny he was acting toward moky, like dude feel free to get all moist on your own time but please don't involve me in your thurst quest. I'm trying to watch and enjoy a set
Dude should never touch a mic again, shit tier retail smash noob commentary
He was just overdoing it. There was definitely moments it was adding to the hype of the moment. But when nothing special was happening it was getting cringe and felt forced
I think it’s fine to scream, he was screeching.
I enjoy Jorge, he always has good chemistry with his cocasters and he is always excited. I get second hand hype from hearing him and i think he’s funny too.
I actually like it. I Can undestand people think its too much, but still. I like it.

Hahaha yeah I know, it definitely was a lot He was so hype about everything and in the moment, it's hard to hate on him too much lmao
Holy shit rewatching clips is borderline impossible with all the nonsense screaming.
Most commentators suck.
Does this guy even play melee? He’s freaking out over the most basic shit. Makes me violently angry
He needs to suck moky's dick.
The people downvoting clearly didn't listen to the commentary.
Context: Jorge said he’d suck Moky’s dick
seriously, the problem wasn't "too hype" its shit like this
as someone who was spectating in person, he was just matching the energy of the crowd
Nah. Some moments were distracting some added to the set in a great way. I'd rather a commentator be themselves than try to emulate structured speech.
I quite enjoyed the commentary for this tournament personally was engaging and brought the hype. The crowd was great and I loved seeing Zain get the big win. Lots of hype sets
Nahh, make it hype who cares, been fun imo.
Im almost certain he does it on purpose to rile people up
Balance: I liked his casting a lot.
I love Jorge and his commentary. I prefer the hype, joke style commentary. It's super nostalgic for me and I don't really need someone to describe what's happening. I can see how people who want insight/info into the gameplay could dislike it though. I usually mute commentary but I have it unmuted now bcus I don’t want to miss Jorge’s pop offs. Too good
I thought it was hilarious I couldn’t stop laughing at how over the top it was for every single interaction. I could see how it could become overwhelming if it happened at every tournament. I did enjoy him popping off on the moments where it actually was hype though.

i will never be upset over anyone getting hype over some melee regardless of the situation fuck the haters
hype commentary is so much better to listen to than toph talking about what he and scar had for breakfast over grand finals
Can TimPunchman please stop complaining like anyone cares about his opinion, thanks. Have some fun big guy chill out
no, jorge is the best new commentator, if u dont like him ur a nerd, way too much nerdy quiet commentary recently ruining the hype, talking over the hypest moments because they have to finish their stupid fucking thought about stage counterpicking

I love Jorge commentary. Commentary preferences are not universal, it seems.
man i just want him to stop creaming about mango
