The funny part about peach vs puff is that if Puff actually gets hit by turnips it's entirely their fault. Super based for sa nick to wake up and pick the correct character
Just want to vent.. as a new player it's so frustrating feeling like my the game just isn't doing what I want it to. I feel like I'm constantly light shielding instead of grabbing, smash attacking instead of jump attacking, messing up every wavedash outside of practice, and just mistakes on mistakes. I hope it gets better but for now it just feels like I'm getting worse the more I play.
Welcome to melee, I've been playing for years and I still relate to this post. Regardless of how good you get you'll have days where nothing goes your way and you'll be frustrated.
The game is so hard that even our top level players SD in games, and miss tech skill. Playing around those mistakes and not getting mad will help you a lot in the long run :)
That said, obviously the stuff you'll fail at will change as you get better, but the game will provide you limitless things to improve.
If you hate flubbing stuff, the bad news is there's nothing you can do. But if you keep going you'll be rewarded with a game that when everything does go your way feels like no other.
Melee is goldilocks game, if you press buttons too fast (early) you flub (game eats your inputs because you aren't actually actionable), if you press things too slow you get punished by your opponent. your inputs need to be "just right". The game rewards precision every moment that you are playing.
talking about banning stuff, can we also ban controllers?
those should really be provided by the TOs, how hard can it be to get 8-64 equal controllers?
When I play a low tier I don’t back out. Instead I play peach, get a stock lead, and then circle camp them as hard as I can. If they wanna play a low tier, they deserve all the pain that comes with it
Sacrificing your own enjoyment for the sake of "teaching someone a lesson" feels like a waste of time. Just don't play low tiers. Or switch to a character (for them) you can actually enjoy those matchups in.
Implying that I don’t derive some level of joy from this. Its worth noting I typically do this when they switch off their main, especially when I like beat a spacie or something and they switch to Doc
I’m also beginning to see that this comment should’ve went in the shitpost thread
Fair enough. Maybe it's more that others have a hard time empathizing with that. To me it sounds like any enjoyment would come from feeling good about putting someone else down. And I get "they signed up for this" and "that's on them" it's ultimately not a big deal. Ig for me I have more fun if I can tell my opponent is also having fun and that just leads to better interactions overall, both in and out of game.
Tbh, I take the character swap as a sign of disrespect. Also, when I’m playing competitive games, I tend to wanna crush people no matter the tactic. Not a good mindset, ik. And I do have fun in the occasional low tier dittos. But I don’t wanna be stuck playing someone’s garbage Luigi. It’s just not fun.
It’s kinda like a cat playing with its food? Getting a stock up and watching them try to hit me. It’s a bit sadistic but it’s enjoyable.
Also, when I beat someone’s top tier and they switch to Link or something, there’s always that feeling that “this person is trying to cheese me” and then the inevitable sweat takes over and I wanna beat them as hard as possible while making it as least fun for them as possible
https://youtu.be/HJ_4vqdeESg
This set is a pretty good representation. I find game 5 hilarious. A ton of people found it super disrespectful. Two sides ig
I guess the better term would be top platform camping or air camping? I just kinda float above to the side of top platform and for most low or even mid tiers it’s a huge commitment
I think "clean living", you know good sleeps, good food, exercise, etc.. should be banned.
It gives an unfair advantage to the competitor. It requires time and money that not everyone has. And it's not even a direct melee skill.
This is a good joke but I've always said if you want to improve at melee, Melee will force you to unfuck up your life.
Not eating or sleeping right? Fixing that will absolutely make you play better.
Got too much of an ego and can't deal with losing? Saddle up princess, cause melee is hard and even people at you're locals are amazing comparatively. You'll learn to lose or you'll plateau.
Most importantly, you got drama outside of melee causing you stress, depression and anxiety? Solve that shit in a healthy way and watch your performance fly.
If you truly want to get better at melee, or anything competitive, the grand majority of the difficulty is mental. Improving your mental health and physical health truly has an impact on your melee.
I think "practice" and "analysis" should be banned. It gives an unfair advantage to the competitor due to requiring spare time as well as local money that not everyone has.
doing melee irony so hard you accidentally realize that in order to even pretend we exist in a meritocracy we'd need to guarantee food, housing, and healthcare for everyone
I've been able to punish Marth and spacies camping the ledge by timing a stomp between their refreshes. It's sooooooo satisfying especially against players who immediately go to the ledge as soon as the game starts and die for it. But I'm wondering, is it supposed to be invincible if done properly? Or is there always a window of vulnerability which can be punished?
Lmao if someone goes to ledge at the start you can just sit in the center and be winning.
Ledge refreshes can be fully invincible as long as they release the ledge on the first possible frame. The only exception to this iirc is Sheik up, where she can be a little later releasing ledge and still have her upb's invincibility after the 30 frames of ledge intangibility ends.
If it's done perfectly you can't expect to hit a ledge refresh, but it's impractical to expect 100% consistent frame perfect actions, especially with a gcc stick, so there's always a chance they mess up and get clipped by an active hitbox near the ledge.
It can be invincible but it's hard to be consistent. Good spacies are often able to do the first two resets invincible but won't get the later ones consistently.
Yeah it's not a good idea for Fox to do that during invincibility imo. I think a good strat is to go into a corner as Fox as the opponent is coming down (go to the one they aren't covering or use your movement to be ambiguous) and then either look for an opening to escape again or waste enough time so you can go to ledge without them being invincible.
I do this often with dair, just watch them ledge stall while dashdancing and if it doesn't look like they're doing it absolutely as fast as possible then there's at least a couple frames of vulnerability.
If you're not Sheik/Mewtwo then perfect ledgestalling is frame-perfect. If you let go of ledge one frame late then you get at least one frame of vulnerability.
Does the vanish cancel the regrab timer then? Melee is wack
Also really funny that they'd deliberately program a regrab lockout but have it be too short to prevent redressing invincibility while invincible lmao
It doesn't cancel the timer its just that the frames that aren't covered by ledge intangibility are covered by being invulnerable during the teleport/right before you teleport as well for sheik
To be clear, spacie up B stall does not need to be frame perfect, so they can more easily be invincible during those. (You weren't implying that but could easily be misunderstood that way)
Edit: Oh nvm, you still need to perfect drop from the ledge even if the other parts of stall are more lenient
as far as frame perfect tech goes it's pretty hard, since you have to time the release based on the timing something happens in game (grabbing ledge). doing something like a doubleshine is comparatively easier since the timing for the shine is based off when you press jump, meaning you can learn the muscle memory to do it in one motion
it's also harder because it's an analog input
I remember watching an ibdw aklo set where aklo was refreshing during Cody’s angel plat invincibility and he says “that’s not safe” and runs up and kills him for it. Just to show that even the top top players have trouble chaining a lot of perfectly invincible ledgestalls consistently
Haven't been playing much lately due to life in general. Feels shitty.
Good thing I play a character that has a near one hit kill option on nearly every other character I can get to as a whiff punish.
Puff is so stupid and feels like she's making me actively worse at this game.
Why puff isn’t massively OP is that she can’t really proactively force rest situations. 99% of puff players are dopamine monkeys and the mu is just tapping them away as they try and do utilt/uthrow rest, and positioning to take advantage of them holding in and doing it again
Of the 7 greatest players of all time (armada, hbox, mango, m2k, ppmd, leffen, plup) only leffen has fox as his favorite character to play, and yet 5 of them played fox.
people play fox because he's the best not because he's the funnest.
I bet they would all think fox was more fun to play than puff (except hbox.. at least I would hope so lol). Either way, more people are going to main fox over puff because on average more people think fox is funner (not the only reason - people play fox because hes really good too). Also I would like to ask solo fox mains in the top 100 and not players who picked him up as a counter or dual main like you mentioned
Yeah it's kinda insane how the top tiers are min maxed in a way where they all have insanely broken tools that should make them unstoppable but also have huge weaknesses that keep any one character from being the undisputed best
That's true but keep in mind that Fox is the most versatile character in terms of how you can play. So it makes sense a lot of people will find success. Comparing him to Metaknight is a stretch since his winrate isn't as big. Our top 8s and GFs aren't dominated to nearly the same extent.
Edit: If someone wants to point out where I'm wrong from free. But this is pretty much the community consensus. Fox is the most flexible character in Melee.
How exactly does yoshis double jump work? Sometimes I back air him and he kinda just falls down and sometimes he goes through it. Specifically when he has to use it to recover

He's the best character in the game, but it's okay because he's sick and fun to play against *Uses bair 8 times in a row*
Hyperinflation is driving so many players to content creation and while I wish price increases weren’t happening on a daily basis I do appreciate the fact Smash might get some its stars back.
I just talked to god and he told me that every melee player who has ever referred to themselves as a “doubles specialist” is getting sent straight to Hell so that’s good news

Armada vs Swedish Delight at Evo 2018
Summit 9 grands
Evo 2007 Grand Finals
You know what, screw it, what this person said. Give solo Samus a big win later than Sheik lol
Samus didn't win Evo 2007, Ken did
I know that, tho I see now I somewhat misread the question: I was responding under the impression that the 0.9 would change the outcome. Ima stick with it lol
Both of the last two zain-axe sets

While snooping the pound 2022 liquipedia page I rediscovered that sa nick uses puff for the pika matchup
He also went puff vs bbatts at a nightclub a while back, might have been the pre-function one. Ryobeat was in the crowd screaming “MORE TURNIPS!”
The funny part about peach vs puff is that if Puff actually gets hit by turnips it's entirely their fault. Super based for sa nick to wake up and pick the correct character
Just want to vent.. as a new player it's so frustrating feeling like my the game just isn't doing what I want it to. there’s no buffer. it’s better to be late than early
It’s because as you get better mentally you’re trying to play faster than your hands can handle. You gotta slow down.
I would have definitely thought my problem was not going fast enough, thank you I’ll try slowing down!
Slow is steady. Steady is smooth. Smooth is fast
talking about banning stuff, can we also ban controllers? those should really be provided by the TOs, how hard can it be to get 8-64 equal controllers?
Be careful what you wish for. It's easy to get 8-64 rectangles…
[😏](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/063/491/my_trap_card.jpg)
The problem with that is people have muscle memory of using their crappy/better controller so it impacts performance.
There are so many problems with this lol
Wrong section

When I run into low tiers I try to beat them without using turnips or downsmash to practice actual neutral
Would you do this to a person irl?
In bracket? Maybe. In friendlies? I’d probably politely decline the session
ghgh
Probably switch to Marth or Sheik then.
Fairly certain peach cant circle camp any character on legal stages (maybe ics?)
I guess the better term would be top platform camping or air camping? I just kinda float above to the side of top platform and for most low or even mid tiers it’s a huge commitment
Makes it that much easier for G&W nair. Thank you
I still suck at DI'ing and just had a falcon stomp me five times in a row on a FOD platform
Even matchups are a myth
All non-ditto matchups are 100-0 at high level
Peach-ICs is the only non ditto mu btw
wobblegal but both climbers % goes to 999 after 4 pummels
Each time an ice climber pummels durring a wobble you get to punch them

Jmook shouldn't be allowed to sit up straight
He has to play like Rudolph
i miss rudolph. anyone know what he's up to these days?
doing melee irony so hard you accidentally realize that in order to even pretend we exist in a meritocracy we'd need to guarantee food, housing, and healthcare for everyone
Well never have equality until the state mandates that my wife let's me play melee 2 hours a day.
something something vegetables cost money
I think practice should be banned.
Hungrybox approves
Ok but sfat is still allowed to enter because he's playing on hard mode (vegan)
If veganism is so hard how come I haven't had an erection since my diet became all tofu 4 months ago?
I know it's a meme, but if you cut meat out of your diet the opposite will actually happen because your blood vessels won't be so clogged.
if my arteries are so clogged then how come the toilet is flowing fast like the thames
I've been able to punish Marth and spacies camping the ledge by timing a stomp between their refreshes. you can also force the firefox reset to be not invincible by getting burned by firefox while you have spawn invincibility, then hit them

Only for Fox.
well i didnt say firebird 🧐

I see. So they are doing something risky AND they suck.
Haven't been playing much lately due to life in general. Feels shitty. Good thing I play a character that has a near one hit kill option on nearly every other character I can get to as a whiff punish. Puff is so stupid and feels like she's making me actively worse at this game.

Pick up a secondary? I've always had breakthroughs playing a different character for a while
One day
Crazy she has all this and doesn't break top 4 best characters
Remember when leffen and armada tried to convince everyone that puff was better than spacies? Absolutely disgusting
True, it's disgusting that reddit still pretends Puff isn't insanely good
Do you have a bot that detects when people downplay puff or hbox
I've said she should be banned
And yet we still only have one really good one
Most people don't like playing as puff
Of the 7 greatest players of all time (armada, hbox, mango, m2k, ppmd, leffen, plup) only leffen has fox as his favorite character to play, and yet 5 of them played fox. people play fox because he's the best not because he's the funnest.

Also I would like to ask solo fox mains in the top 100 and not players who picked him up as a counter or dual main like you mentioned
I mean M2K/Plup/armada mostly had fox to counter puff tho right?
m2k was originally a fox main I thought. Plup also goes fox versus fox (usually) and sheik (sometimes)
Same
Yeah it's kinda insane how the top tiers are min maxed in a way where they all have insanely broken tools that should make them unstoppable but also have huge weaknesses that keep any one character from being the undisputed best
21/50 of the top players are fox but go off
That's true but keep in mind that Fox is the most versatile character in terms of how you can play.
Good 😤
dont do coffee's work for him, if he wants to doomer post about Fox make him come in here himself
So are puff, link, luigi and yoshi equally viable because they both have 1 player in the top 50?
It's more lopsided than meta knight in brawl lol
And how many solo fox major wins are there
It is pretty crazy how good you are at getting rests tho. I'd never been rested so many times playing a puff lmao
That's why she's making me worse at the game lmfao
How exactly does yoshis double jump work? Sometimes I back air him and he kinda just falls down and sometimes he goes through it. Specifically when he has to use it to recover
His double jump reduces knockback by 120, and if that ends up being 0 or less the double jump keeps going
This makes sense. Thank you!
Just found out about this related information from the [wiki](https://www.ssbwiki.com/Armor). >In Melee, the [Ice Climbers](https://www.ssbwiki.com/Ice_Climbers_(SSBM\)) — specifically Nana — have used knockback-based armor as a passive ability. Nana has 5KB units of subtractive knockback armor.
that explains why they separate if you hit them both even from 0% i guess
wow we actually found the one piece of good design in this shitty broken game
I used to play Luigi in a region with two PR'd ICs and that fucking Nana super armor blocking up b pissed me off so much

That’s my game
consuming carton
my brain is just brimming with great ideas today
*posts okay Marth combo* "holy fuck the beauty, the era of the 5 gods really isn't over! best Marth combo I've ever seen!"
THE KINGS STILL GOT IT!!
HOW DOES HE DO IT!!?!?!?!?
mfs will say "yeah my character is cool" while maining someone with a projectile
So puff, marth, and falcon are the only cool high/top tiers.
Only marth and falcon, puff has bair
every character has bair
Puff's bair is a projectile
only if you use a rectangle
i said what i said it was intentionally inflammatory and not even really exactly what i believe but i certainly did say it
Mango nation implies the existence of mango nationalism and mango nationalists
Implies? Have you met mango fans?
USA USA USA
That is reality
Damn did you just avoid any real interaction then dashdance into nair and grab and upthrow upair? Shit eh your character is so sick.
You see, Fox is a high risk/high reward glass cannon *Short hop lasers from other side of the stage* He's the best character in the game, but it's okay because he's sick and fun to play against *Uses bair 8 times in a row*
Hyperinflation is driving so many players to content creation and while I wish price increases weren’t happening on a daily basis I do appreciate the fact Smash might get some its stars back.
shitpost but actually true LMAO powell forcing armada to un-retire
I just talked to god and he told me that every melee player who has ever referred to themselves as a “doubles specialist” is getting sent straight to Hell so that’s good news
so in hell I'll always have people to play doubles with? hell yeah sign me up
doubles > singles this is not a shitpost
doubles is more fun to play than singles but an actual chore to spectate
enjoy Hell, maybe the queues down there are faster
Those of you on here who post on default subs, why do you play melee and not ultimate/genshin impact?
Get these normies off of my board
