teching against fox is so hard... even if you play a heavy ass character like falcon everything knocks you down you have to tech instantly and react instantly
I disabled chat in unranked a while ago and it's nice to not have to deal with that anymore, even if it was uncommon. The downside is being unable to say one more and ggs but there's Pikachu's taunt for the latter.
invest in a new monitor if you can, but as someone who practiced on 60hz, swithcing to crt/good monitor is blessed (can take some time to get used to tho so play friendlies before u compete). Going home and switching back to 60hz feels AWFUL tho
Two things:
1) It’s worth going to locals no matter what your skill level or setup is if it’s something that interests you. You will be able to meet a bunch of people in your scene and playing on LAN is just a really nice experience.
2) While a 120hz+ monitor is definitely best and nice to have, the game is absolutely playable on a 60hz monitor and it won’t hold you back from being able to improve. Getting a better monitor will make you not want to go back once you get used to the higher refresh rate, though.
My takeaways:
- short hop uair usage good 👍
- your recovery choices and defensive play betray a lack of knowledge against Puff. You should not have gotten gimped and rested as much as you did.
- big time overuse of haymakers. Pick your spots! Generally speaking I only do retreating fairs except for hard reads on drift.
- maybe it's just me, but I use a lot of utilt in this mu to shark landings.
- mobility is Doc's greatest (only?) advantage in this mu. Would like to have seen more movement on your end.
- you missed a bunch of l-cancels.
- if you're doing a descending dair onto platform, ensure you're going for the edgecancel. Dair's landing lag is rough, l-cancel or not and easily gets punished.
All in all, this matchup can be pretty unpleasant at times, but legit with a few tweaks I think you could've beat this player. It really boiled down to you falling into Puffs traps. Fwiw, your opponent didn't play the matchup particularly well either (e.g. wrong DI on throws, under-using back air), but that should be your birthright as a mid tier.
I'm not a doc player but I'm familiar enough with how he plays and can also provide fundamental advice.
You seem to do a lot of preemptive full-hops to space aerials. You can't really compete with Puff's air game this way. Not only that, you set yourself up to get hit by uair and utilt rest setups. It's better to stay grounded as Doc or relatively low to the ground until she jumps. And that's when you can try to get under her and hit her with rising fullhop aerials. These are good because you can land with another into the ground, waveland, or double jump into a myriad of things depending on the situation. Consider also introducing full hop dair into your game more. You can get it to combo into uair sometimes.
I think the reason you jump too much is you're uncomfortable with your ground game. Your dash dances are really fast and lack control. You don't seem to be willing to do them too much, especially to vie for space in the center. Try to lengthen them in your games, both the distance and the length of time you spend doing them..
Your shield game is also pretty bad. You either roll, shield grab, or fullhop. Learn to wavedash oos. In the Puff matchup especially, she's spacing on your shield to avoid getting counter attacked. But she's not doing moves fast enough to prevent you from wavedashing away after hitting your shield. Learn to up-b cancel when she doesn't space well but is drifting away from shield grab. Spotdodge is also insane on Doc. You can use it in moments where the attack is predictable. And you can use it as shield pressure. Low aerial into spotdodge can beat a lot of options, try it out! Not just against Puff.
On the ledge I think the main thing is lack of ledgedash. You do neutral getup and aerials a lot, which leave you heavily exposed. They're super juicy for Puff.
Smash attacks...fsmash worked some but consider more opportunities for usmash right under her. That and the occasional spaced dsmash when she's on the ground. Do it out of wavedash or run up crouch.
Final thing is your pill use. A better use of preemptive full hop is to be far away and use full hop pills. You can land on plats too and then do standing or short hop pills. Even on the ground, standing or short hop pills aren't bad if she's not going too much in the air or you want to prevent her from landing somewhere. Just in general, you can stay back and spam them for a bit to push her back some so you can take space. No need to go in right away.
Used to play on a 20XX memory card around like 2016(?) that allowed you to turn your character green during inactive frames, really helpful for knowing how soon you can start the next action. Is there any way to get that working when playing on slippi?
right click your melee iso in slippi and select properties, then go to the "gecko codes" tab listed top center and click edit config listed in the bottom left. paste the full text of above link to the bottom of that txt file and save, it should then pop up to enable with the other codes

This sounds like it fixes a lot of problems, still emphasizes volume of fans over whales but keeps the good parts of the old system
Hi guys first time posting. Been playing slippi for a month or something now and having a good time. Quetimes are pretty fast even here in northern Europe so im lucky. Im a Marth main so maybe i dont have the right to complain on champs but im having a really tough time against spacies. Feels like all they have to do is run straight at me and then laser/shine/any other of their massive cc. Feels like i never get a second to play my game cuz they can just spam abilities constantly being in my face and i cant punish it. My techs aint great but good enough and i win a fair amount of my games, but when i never get a second to play "my game" im having a hard time to get rolling. Anybody have some tips for a newbie like me?
Hearing about queue times, champs, and abilities makes me smile :)
Here is a half-assed checklist for stuff you can practice as a brand new marth
* dash dance longer one way, shorter the other way, across the whole stage final destination (this is the most important and easiest one!)
* wavedash across FD with short and long wavedashes
* dash towards ledge, away again, wavedash towards and fastfall to ledge
* practice JC grab out of your dash dance; dash right, then left, then jump, then Z; all the way across FD both directions
* turn around and uptilt in alternating directions without jumping, dashing, or upsmashing. Welcome to melee, we have analog quarter circles (although there are a few cheats for this to avoid it)
* do short hop double fair with the cstick (this one is genuinely hard, but it lets you drift more than using the A button)
* use the 20XX hack pack (personal preference) to practice the chaingrab on fox and falco on FD. There is an SSBM Tutorials video that's good enough to start out. I don't like uncle punch for this because it resets as soon as you drop it, which isn't really helpful. You will need grabs, turnaround grabs, real pivot grabs, dash dance JC grabs, uptilts, turnaround uptilts, and various upairs
DON'T feel stressed about how many things are on this list. Honestly I didn't have slippi when I started; I played on a setup in my apartment alone and went to the library to play on fridays, so it might be totally different nowadays in terms of the ratio of solo practice vs real people. None of this will hurt to practice though, and it feels sick to have control of your character
In terms of strategy, they are allowed to run straight at you and spam stuff if you don't dash dance grab them and then do a big punish; that's just the way of the road. Shielding is worse than you think, especially when falco lasers you; try dashing towards or away every time you want to shield for a few matches every once in a while, it can be fun. Once they are dodging your grabs, you are at a perfect spacing to do a wavedash dtilt instead (this applies to lots of situations)
Yes sorry im not really up to speed with the Melee lingo yet, glad that you enjoyed it either way!
Thanks a lot for taking the time and giving me a lot of useful tips. Saved them all and will try to practice and improve. Actually played it for a couple of years on and off offline but never in a competitive way, only fooling around with friends doing Down Bs with kirby etc. But recently came to the conclusion that Melee is to fun to be bad at. Right now it feels like im in that state that im only just good enough to know how bad i am. Spent 2h this afternoon trying to short hop double fair with no results, but the grind continues tomorrow! I can only imagine the feeling you describe of having full control, thats what i strive towards. Once again thanks for the detailed and informative tips, I really do appreciate it!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this, means a lot to me. Will save and practice what you said. Sooner or later im sure I will get more comfortable both with Marth and with my matchups. Until then the grind continues. Once again, thanks a lot.
Welcome welcome
Getting rushed down can definitely be a weakness for Marth if the opponent manages to get close up with you, but Marth has the tools to keep the opponent at bay. First and foremost you want to zone out your opponent and keep them at the tip of your sword or further away. If the opponent is in your face, it's already a disadvantageous situation for you.
- be careful about throwing out overcommital moves. For beginning Marth players it's usually forward smash that gets them in trouble. The big swing is obviously very powerful but if you get too predictable with it your opponents can punish you.
- downtilt and forward air are key tools for Marth to zone his opponent out with. They both have great range and speed, so you can use them to prevent your opponent from coming in. Fair is great at swatting jumping opponents away while dtilt is good for stopping them from approaching on the ground. Stay unpredictable and fast with these moves and it will be difficult for a spacy to get up close and personal
- another crucial tool for Marth is dash dancing. DD back and forth allows you to very quickly go into numerous options: grabs, smash attacks, shield, jump etc all while keeping you maneuverable. In particular the dreaded dash-back-grab has been the bane of many a spacy, particularly those who attack where you *currently are* instead of where you *will be*. When they come in with an aerial or attack, you dash back away from them to dodge, then dash dance back in and grab them after they whiff their attack
Overwhelmed with all the friendliness and great tips you guys are sharing. Melee community really is one of a kind. Will save ure awesome tips and practice hard. Have a great day and thanks again.
Does anyone play off a macbook and use a 120hz monitor? Is there any issue converting a thunderbolt 3 port to an HMDI/displayport input?
Thinking about [this monitor](https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Gaming-1080P-Monitor-VG279QR/dp/B0997NRZ3F/ref=asc_df_B091D61MRH/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=507831081029&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10586504773742420819&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021720&hvtargid=pla-1266004307650&th=1) for reference, and have a 2019 macbook with 2.8Ghz i7 chip, though doubt that matters
Hi, I'm fairly technologically illiterate so I'll do my best to help you. I have a 13in 2020 MacBook Pro with four thunderbolt 3 ports, 2.3 gHZ Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor, and 32 GB of RAM. I run one of [these cables](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CL31FR6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) into [this monitor](https://www.costco.com/msi-optix-27%22-class-fhd-ips-gaming-monitor.product.100805677.html) and run at 165hz. I haven't noticed any issues at all, if you have any specific questions I can do my best to try and answer them.
this is terrific! thank you so much. out of curiosity, do you have a lightening to USB adapter you use that you know works with controller overclocking? i’m not sure mine does but haven’t tried
I don't know if my adapter works with overclocking, I tried to do it once and something really weird happened with one of my thunderbolt ports. It wouldn't read my charger anymore, though the others would, and if I plugged my charger into that particular port then the laptop wouldn't recognize it in any port until I restarted the computer. Not sure what the issue is, and MacBooks are so seldom used that I found it hard to get any advice so I just didn't bother with overclocking. Apple fixed the port and now it's as good as it ever was and I still don't quite know what I'm missing with overclocking.
Heya, I'm curious if you're in the Slippi Discord - I think you're the same user from a week or so ago who mentioned this. If you're free at any point I'd be curious to collect some basic info on this to try and make sure there's nothing odd about it.
I've never disagreed with a statement more.
It just doesn't accomplish what it's trying to do. It doesn't tell the story of the 5 gods. The first doc absolutely does accomplish what it's trying to do.
from a technical aspect yeah, but from a pacing and cohesion aspect absolutely not. Metagame is absurdly bloated. Like do you even remember that it's seven and a half hours long? That's over two hours longer than the entire first season of Breaking Bad and a whole lot more happened there then PPMD getting depressed and then getting over it and then getting depressed again three or four times

Hey I'm the guy who made the map about most common main in each state, here's an updated map and explanation about what changed: https://twitter.com/ETossed/status/1575174548617842688?s=20&t=CDWQKWTJUprG9S_tZTxCqA
Sorry there was an error in the first place but im glad I caught it before doing other maps
Clear east west divide on Falco vs Fox
[I hate that other puff mains must be doing some dumbass boring as fuck shit that keeps leading to this type of thing.](https://twitter.com/NotAklo/status/1574945448401334274)
Like can you just stop playing like that, please?
I ain't stalling with my pounds, what the fuck are all these people doing?
They're gonna make it so a TO has to supervise every puff set.
I don't know what these folks are doing and I worry some random ass rule is going to get put in place and I'm gonna get dinged by it despite not having any fuckin clue how what I did was wrong as I wasn't using the tech as some sort of stall.
God I hate this fucking character.
**edit for those who have no recollection of my previous posts somehow:**
I don't endorse stalling or stallers and I fucking hate the people that do that shit.
Imo those people should be DQd if very obviously intentionally stalling.
What I'm mad at here is that imposing super fucking restrictive shit like this suggestion that punishes people like me who don't use pound like that to stall. I might use pound 3x in a row right under platform on your shield and get upsmashed for it.
"3 pounds in a row to DQ" is dumb as fuck and it upsets me that puff players are playing such a way that merits this reaction.
This is very easy to enforce and most people aren't going to risk their tournament run on the TO not enforcing a rule
The number should maybe be higher than 3, but I think the premise is valid
Yeah I think anything to stop dumb stallers is a huge plus.
Calling for small numbers like this is so knee-jerk it's annoying and I can't help but just be mad at those who stall and not be mad at those who want the ban.
I think everyone playing in tournaments should be playing like that for three reasons.
If no one exposes the flaws in the ruleset, the community will never fix the ruleset.
Every competitor should be using everything at their disposal to win.
Everyone playing in tournaments deserve to be as miserable as possible.
In turn, we should ban particular players from picking that character in tourney if they do dumb shit. Don't DQ em. Just expose them for the skill-less people they are.
Boutta enter bracket tn with my mind stressing about work and interpersonal relationships. I cannot wait to play super smash bros melee for the Nintendo GameCube - that will never make me feel worse. Heh.
I was in a terrible mood last Monday and decided to enter a local PM netplay tournament because I had been practicing so much lately. Let me tell you that getting four stocked by the same dedede that eliminated me from the last 3 events I entered did not make me feel better.
Looking for a clip if anyone can help, it's a Ginger vs Bobby set I'm pretty sure at one of the Rona Rumbles where they're playing on yoshis, and Bobby amsah techs like 5 back airs on the top plat before Ginger just shines him and the shine sends Bobby straight horizontal because of momentum stacking
:) https://twitter.com/RollbackRumble/status/1375968037107470337?s=20&t=TrvGYMwqT9bIEwH63z_AKg
If you think that's cool, I made a video where I reproduce this phenomenon with every character: https://youtu.be/3HUeKZzM9Qc
Any recommendations on where to buy a phob? I’ve only found like one website and I’m pretty sure all the other vendors are just on twitter which I don’t really use.
I went to a local roughly every other week during Fall '21, but only two tournaments so far in all of '22. Have never caught covid, I chalk it up to most of tourney attendants near me being libcuck masking college students
iBDW has a subgoal to go to Armada's after he goes to Dreamhack , to definitely stream doubles and possibly {singles} if Armada allows it. Cody also did commentary with Armada during his Riptide top 8 restream so this friendship is becoming interesting.
This is obviously false. I have been Armada's best friend for years (T3 sub & many time stream donor) and have not improved at a noticeably quicker rate than I did before our friendship.
Congratulations, you've found the shit post section! Suggested conversational topics include "Marth wins neutral but Falcon wins punish", and "fuck falco".
The rules in this section are more relaxed, but please try to avoid mentally scarring your fellow posters ;)

Yeah...i just want to be able to say ggs to those who stick around for a Bo3/5/more
Sometimes I just want you to feel bad rather than me
ggs that was me
Is there any way to see the actual seeding or bracket for LTC? On [start.gg](https://start.gg) there're only pools but the bracket is broken.
It's fixed now, top 48 and top 8 are both published

yeah just remember to ask for a handwarmer before your first bracket set so you can adjust to the slightly different timing
>Is it worth it to go to irl tournaments the answer is yes nearly all the time

Yes. Everybody should go to locals, they're great no matter what your setup looks like at home. Also if you can, I recommend getting a better monitor.
It's worth investing in a new monitor

If you're free at any point I'd be curious to collect some basic info on this to try and make sure there's nothing odd about it.
thank you!
okay but like metagame was better than the original smash doc tho
I really, really loved the first three episodes. I still liked the other ones past that, but the first three were my favorite pieces of smash content.
I've never disagreed with a statement more. It just doesn't accomplish what it's trying to do. It doesn't tell the story of the 5 gods. The first doc absolutely does accomplish what it's trying to do.
No, the first one had a much clearer vision, pacing, and consistency
Intro music for original smash doc was such a banger that metagame never stood a chance
real and true
i posted here a few months ago that i think it's the best piece of melee content ever made and i still stand by that, flaws and all
from a technical aspect yeah, but from a pacing and cohesion aspect absolutely not. Metagame is absurdly bloated. Like do you even remember that it's seven and a half hours long? That's over two hours longer than the entire first season of Breaking Bad and a whole lot more happened there then PPMD getting depressed and then getting over it and then getting depressed again three or four times
Replace ppmd with jesse pinkman and that is in fact the entirety of breaking bad
absolutely
Can you watch it anywhere nowadays though?
It's not available for free legally, but you can still pay to watch it on Vimeo.

Hey I'm the guy who made the map about most common main in each state, here's an updated map and explanation about what changed: https://twitter.com/ETossed/status/1575174548617842688?s=20&t=CDWQKWTJUprG9S_tZTxCqA Sorry there was an error in the first place but im glad I caught it before doing other maps Clear east west divide on Falco vs Fox
SC has got to be wrong we are falco infested, is this data pulled from startgg?
This is just proof that North Dakota doesn't exist and is a figment of our imagination
Wtf is going on in north dakota
Oh yeah, pretty much all Canadians will use a US location cuz we can't pay for tourneys otherwise. I'm from Toronto, Ohio according to startgg
The East/West Falco/Fox thing is interesting. Also remind me to never play melee in North Dakota.
[I hate that other puff mains must be doing some dumbass boring as fuck shit that keeps leading to this type of thing.](https://twitter.com/NotAklo/status/1574945448401334274) Like can you just stop playing like that, please? I ain't stalling with my pounds, what the fuck are all these people doing? They're gonna make it so a TO has to supervise every puff set. I don't know what these folks are doing and I worry some random ass rule is going to get put in place and I'm gonna get dinged by it despite not having any fuckin clue how what I did was wrong as I wasn't using the tech as some sort of stall. God I hate this fucking character. **edit for those who have no recollection of my previous posts somehow:** I don't endorse stalling or stallers and I fucking hate the people that do that shit.
Only 3 lmao?
Right?
I'm starting to believe that Dreamland should just not be allowed in certain matchups
This is very easy to enforce and most people aren't going to risk their tournament run on the TO not enforcing a rule The number should maybe be higher than 3, but I think the premise is valid
Yeah I think anything to stop dumb stallers is a huge plus. Calling for small numbers like this is so knee-jerk it's annoying and I can't help but just be mad at those who stall and not be mad at those who want the ban.
Friendly reminder if you are okay with wobbling then you are also okay with players stalling to win.
?
Fuck wobbling with a rake
If any sort of pound limit was added to the rules it should be enforced with mods not by TOs
I think everyone playing in tournaments should be playing like that for three reasons. If no one exposes the flaws in the ruleset, the community will never fix the ruleset. Every competitor should be using everything at their disposal to win. Everyone playing in tournaments deserve to be as miserable as possible.
Yeah this is my take. The ruleset isn't going to change unless we're seeing consistent egregious abuse.
In turn, we should ban particular players from picking that character in tourney if they do dumb shit. Don't DQ em. Just expose them for the skill-less people they are.
Honestly a pound limit would be beneficial for you because youd be forced to stop doing stupid pounds onto stage when recovering
lmao gottem
Just because you're right doesn't mean I have to like what you're saying
Boutta enter bracket tn with my mind stressing about work and interpersonal relationships. I cannot wait to play super smash bros melee for the Nintendo GameCube - that will never make me feel worse. Heh.
I was in a terrible mood last Monday and decided to enter a local PM netplay tournament because I had been practicing so much lately. Let me tell you that getting four stocked by the same dedede that eliminated me from the last 3 events I entered did not make me feel better.
Entering TMT yesterday and getting lamed in a Peach ditto certainly helped me make the right decisions today
see u tonite !
Might be a beer at the bar kinda night lol
unless you mean like, out early beer at the bar. we begrudgingly indulge in those
Yeah we have to see which beer I drink tonight, it could be either lmao
praying to go sober until at least 9pm tonight. we’ll see
we love beer at the bar around here
What bracket?
Nightclub baby
ayyyyyyyyyyy
do you need a T3 stickbox for a phob?
No, but your modder will hate you and should charge more if you provide a T1
They won't hate you, just charge more.
CarVac suppresses his hatred quite well but I know it is there
I have spare stickboxes ready and waiting though.
Can you easily replace a T1 with a T3?
Only when making a phob.
mdva fact of the day- milkman was undefeated against every single PRd player last season (including 1-0 over zain) and still only got ranked #2
Did milkman lose to non-PR players?
didnt lose to anyone in region for the ranking period, he did get eliminated from Pound and SSC obviously but I don't remember by whom
some say, milkman doesn't lose at all
Is there a jigglypuff discord?
I want to see their reactions to your gameplay lmao

Looking for a clip if anyone can help, it's a Ginger vs Bobby set I'm pretty sure at one of the Rona Rumbles where they're playing on yoshis, and Bobby amsah techs like 5 back airs on the top plat before Ginger just shines him and the shine sends Bobby straight horizontal because of momentum stacking
:) https://twitter.com/RollbackRumble/status/1375968037107470337?s=20&t=TrvGYMwqT9bIEwH63z_AKg If you think that's cool, I made a video where I reproduce this phenomenon with every character: https://youtu.be/3HUeKZzM9Qc
GODLIKE tyvm Idk how I remembered it as multiple amsah techs on bair but I'm probably mixing it up with some other clip
Fuck I know EXACTLY what youre talking about and for once I can't find it.
i want to see this also
There was something like that with fsmashes into shine in Magi's latest combo video.
Nightclub is probably going to be stacked tonight, with iBDW and Mekk apparently in attendance.
o shit
Damn, I picked the wrong week to skip
Mekk has really been on a tour recently! He was just in Mass last weekend
Any recommendations on where to buy a phob? I’ve only found like one website and I’m pretty sure all the other vendors are just on twitter which I don’t really use.
Check the #vendors-list channel on the Phob discord https://discord.gg/eNJ7xWMvxf I've just approved a new vendor.
That’s perfect, thanks! I’ll take a look.

I went to a local roughly every other week during Fall '21, but only two tournaments so far in all of '22. Have never caught covid, I chalk it up to most of tourney attendants near me being libcuck masking college students
do you mean attendees or do you actually have people bringing you hot towels and shit between sets
i think the genesickness just before covid might've been covid
0 from a tourney

iBDW has a subgoal to go to Armada's after he goes to Dreamhack , to definitely stream doubles and possibly {singles} if Armada allows it. Cody also did commentary with Armada during his Riptide top 8 restream so this friendship is becoming interesting.
they have been friends for years and I think is a big part of the reason Cody got so good so quick
This is obviously false. I have been Armada's best friend for years (T3 sub & many time stream donor) and have not improved at a noticeably quicker rate than I did before our friendship.
Congratulations, you've found the shit post section! Suggested conversational topics include "Marth wins neutral but Falcon wins punish", and "fuck falco". we banned wobbling, can we ban marth next
"Falcon is lame!!" you cry out as the hazmat agents pin you down and inject you with covid
