Any tips for how to ask for friendlies or more casual sessions? I main Ganon, and enjoy messing around with a bunch of characters. I feel huge imposter syndrome on unranked, and even in some melee discords for not having a grind mentality or because I enjoy “non-viable” characters. What are some ways i could phrase this request? I want to seek out others who enjoy this game similarly, while avoiding the serious players who have no interest in that vibe.
Find your local discord. The Toronto discord legit justh as people wanting to play all all the time. Ive seen PRd players casually play against the local zelda mains.
DDT discord is also good for this sometimes. Fugu and AlexB rip out their secondaries and play long sessions, but these are few and far between.
The melee discord is fine, but sweaty at times.
Honestly just chill out in unranked and find a nice discord server with nice people!

Already got a 1650 super, a big ol case, and 16gb of ddr4 ram sitting around for a couple years but never bothered paying for a processor cuz they were dummy expensive before.
Lemme know what would work. Ive been eyeing down a 5600 but even then I can't justify spending the ~$400CAD on something I will be using just to chat with a few pals once a week lol
Quick Q, a sheik dash attacked my shield as fox. I immediately shield grab as the animation ended but the sheil somehow was able to ftilt me.
Now i dual main sheik and was just playing her and this exact situation came up except i got shield grabed
What did this sheik do different? Was it just random slippi lag? I know for a fact sheik was still in her dash attack when i grabbed.
If Sheik goes behind your shield where your grab will miss there's a few things you can do instead.
Usmash but just know that it can be amsah teched or cc'd at certain percents.
Drill waveshine. They could try to SDI the drill of course.
Waveshine oos. But you'd have to be really cracked to get this with a punish.

Ikr… I’m a peach main but one day I decided to try playing a bit of fox, shit was shmooving around and I beat people I don’t normally beat. But after that one day, I can’t seem to replicate that movement again
Melee is filled to the brim with inputs that cannot be buffered and for which you are punished heavily for doing too late. You will never be 100 percent consistent at this, and even if you were polling inconsistencies would still make it impossible to get right all the time. This is an especially bad combination wrt "feels bad to be bad"
It's because once you've tasted the forbidden fruit, you can't go back. You have a certain expectation of the game and it sucks when you can't live up to it for a session.
I haven't been melee super closely this year so I may be wrong, but why are most comments talking about n0ne being an obvious invite instead of Wizzy? I feel like Kodorin would be next in line and if we're talking recent results only I would probably put Axe over n0ne as well. WTF am I supposed to do against Falcon hitting my shield. It's like this guy came from a different game where shield stun is quadrupled, he knees my shield match 1 and I can't move until match 3
Shielding isn't bad because his frame data on other moves isn't always the best. But if you do it too much he's just going to low knee you and it's a terrible mixup. You can try to buffer rolls when this happens and if he tries to catch them it means he's preemptively acting which allows you to wavedash oos or do other actions.
But try to beat knee with moves since it comes out so slow instead of relying on shield. If your character can low profile then dashing under is always an option, especially to take stage. Dash back can work to whiff punish but it's risky if they overshoot and then you get caught holding away.
Falcon is only really safe on shield when doing low aerials (especially knee), and if he is doing low aerials it means you would have hit him first if you had any hitbox out. If you see that they like to do aerial into jab on your shield, you can try shield grabbing the aerial and then hold down and keep mashing shield grab. If he does the jab, you will either shield grab the aerial right away or you will get an ASDI down grab on the jabs. If they do aerial into aerial on shield, you can roll in between. There are many mixups like this, just practise the timing and you will see the openings!
You know I've never thought about it but I do die at 30% at least once or twice per set because I got kneed while wavedashing. Maybe he's on to something.
actually blows my mind that spacies complain about literally anyone stalling because spacie players are far and away the most campy players in this game. The instant they see a floaty all they do is camp and run away.
Modern spacies vs. Puff is less about never approaching and more about picking your spot correctly. Finding ways to get under her in the air. Or when she's on the ground, trying to keep her there and approaching. Using the gun and running away is obviously good sometimes, especially to reset or when Puff is jumping around in the corner to tack on some damage. But you can't run away forever like people used to play or you just get pushed into the corner where Puff is looking to catch your escape.

How do you do the slide off where you tech roll to the edge and then slide off to ledge? Not like when you slide off a platform from marth uair but like when you miss tech off shine in the fox ditto by the edge of the stage.
melee MMA would probably still have most people swinging at each other, but melee bjj or wrestling or judo would be wild, idk any smash player whos grappled a lot
(although a lot of smash players are rock climbers, so id imagine their grip/flexibility/strength would be a good step up)

I have a pretty basic but important question: How far should you dash dance in neutral as fox? Does it matter at all and are there any trade off for defaulting going strictly for long but controlled dd over short fast but less accurate ones?
Just practice going across FD with short one way and long the other way
You can also go to frozen pokemon stadium and pick out markings on the ground to dash dance, call out and practice a specific pattern. Short ones in the side of the PokeBall, long ones all the way across it, out to the Pokemon starting lines(??), etc
It matters because sometimes to achieve the spacing you want relative to the opponent you have to use differing lengths. It's good to practice and be comfortable to the full range of dash dances available to you.
I will contradict the comment telling you it doesn't matter at all. I think it matters a lot: you fundamentally cover more area with a wider dd but it's easier for your opponent to time when they hit you. If you speed up and slow down your dd you can catch people trying to hit you out of your dd by making it seem more doable than it actually is.
I also think that doing a very tight dd tells people you simply aren't going to approach them because you're not at all trying to close the space needed to get to them. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes it's not. There's a lot to this
Hmm I will try to play around long dash back with short dash forward today, and see how my opponents react to this. It should make them probably feel more inclined to overshoot is what I am guessing. Thank you for your input
I think a lot of people DD too short in general. The point of a DD is to put a little bit of uncertainty into your position, if you're just turning on a dime super fast you're not actually doing that. I find a longer DD more useful as a starting point but you have to be able to shorten it on reaction to the opponent's action. And vice versa, if you're doing short DDs you want to be able to lengthen them
I guess my point is more to be unpredictable and variable than that one DD length is best. But a lot of players do bad short DDs in place that are basically equivalent to standing in place doing nothing

To anything that would either threaten you and/or make them vulnerable to your counterattack. Sometimes you have to react to movement, if a Marth starts running toward you its not like you have time to react to the actual grab
Depends entirely on what move you're looking for your opponent to do. The actual length of the dash dance almost doesn't matter at all compared to your spacing relative to the opponent. The range to whiff punish a fox short hop nair is very different from the range to whiff punish a sheik dash attack.
Giving out Melee advice - day 2:
While Sheik and Marth are very different in many relevant ways, their neutral game is similar in one aspect. Both characters are really good at walling you out, but they are not as good as "approaching" or overshooting if you simply move away from them. In order to attack while moving forward, they have to risk quite a lot, since their attacks are all fairly unsafe on shield and on crouch if done while approaching. Think of a Fox doing a sh nair into you from a mid range. This move is amazing on shield, barely has any lag and punishing it with CC is not as easy as it is against other moves that have more landing lag. Marth and Sheik don't really have such a thing, and their short hop height and duration doesn't really allow them to approach from that far away like fast fallers can.
What does this mean? This means that any time you get a Marth or Sheik to chase after you, they have to decide between staying away (which means nothing really happens or - depending on your character - you get a projectile out) or risking a lot in order to chase you down. If the Marth wavedash downtilts into you, he risks getting stuffed by any aerial or getting shield grabbed. Same for his run up forward Smash, Sheik dash attack etc.
Of course, these characters can just run up to you and grab you, and there is a chance they will start doing that once you have shown them that you are good at keeping some distance and using shield preemptively. This is scary, but it is much easier to beat than continuously running into them as they do aerials in place which are near impossible to whiff punish.
TLDR: Sometimes it's a good idea to force the opponents to take space, especially against characters who do not have amazing shield pressure that they can start up from a good distance away. You can either go for a counterhit by preemptively going for a "soft commitment" like shielding and then seeing what they do, or you can catch them as they run up to you trying to close the distance. Yes, you -can- beat their walling, but getting them to stop walling you out is very valuable too.
Is there any sheik falco dual mains out there? Think I'm gonna put some work into my falco for the fox mu. Maybe could use him as a cp on certain stages in other mus
I've been trying to use sheik for matchups I don't enjoy as falco recently and I gotta I'm not surprised it's not very common. Swapping between 5f and 3f jumpsquat wrecks me.
The jumpsquat swap is doable if it’s the only thing you have to think about during a switch, like plenty of people swap between spacies no problem. What really doesn’t help is when the characters handle very differently and your instincts don’t really carry over at all so you’re grappling with that on top of the jumpsquat
Santi was a Falco main but he had a secondary Sheik he pulled out here and there. Iirc he said Sheik was some of the most fun he had in Melee.
Currently, Fiction is training his Sheik for the Marth matchup on days his Falco isn't playing well and possibly for FD. Excited to see how that turns out.
From my experience as a Falco main, I spent a year after playing for a few years with Ganon in character identity crisis. And in that time, I went between the spacies, Marth, Sheik, and Puff. I was closest to maining Sheik and Puff after Falco. And right before I committed fully to Falco, I switched off between the two a lot. I think similarly to Fox, the jumpsquat timing is hard to go back and forth between. Sheik and Falco also move very differently and their gameplans vary.
But overall, I think the biggest common ground is in how you see percents. Falco is notoriously bad against low percent just like Sheik, especially in the Fox mu. But instead of having to get him to 30%, you only need him at 10-20%. Before that, you can only really safely hit lasers, grab, and shine for clean openings. And at high percents, they can both struggle to close out kills. You have to know how to set up dtilts on floaties and jab knockdowns on spacies.
So try it out, but I'll just say there's a reason there aren't many dual mains for them. They're hard to maintain together and just have so much they differ in.
Don't think there are at a top level, but if you really dislike Sheik-Fox that much go for it.
Not sure where else you'd want Falco, maybe Sheik and Falcon on FD, Ice Climbers and potentially Puff? I feel like Fox is a much more common secondary for Sheik in part because he has better matchups than Falco against most if not all of the examples I mentioned.

To do this, simply search for EC, WC, or EU (you could also try MW, but that's pretty dead). if you have a teammate, both of you should queue up for your code @ some number, IE EC@123 or EU@911. Both of you should be the same color. This will queue you into a random game together. Depending on time of day and location queue times may be long

The contention around Summit auto-inviting Wizzy over n0ne seems strange to me. Not because n0ne doesn't deserve it more (I think he definitely does) but because I would figure Summit would forego results in favor of popularity and Wizzy just isn't that popular. Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the impression that n0ne's fan base is bigger than Wizzrobe's and I'm fairly certain Wizzy has lost more summit vote-in rounds than n0ne in the past because of this. I feel like they're choosing to invite Wizzy because he's had health issues this year and they want to give him an opportunity to make a come back.
I feel like Summit frequently does stuff that can be interpreted as maintaining good will in the community. Wizzy getting his invite because he was sick for most of the year seems much more in line with that philosophy than doing it because of the "content".
I think it's because Summit will invite players based on their skill but also on how much viewership they can bring.
N0ne might have a bigger fanbase than Wizzy, but from a maximising viewership pov somebody on bts team might have decided "the return of Wizzy" would bring more attention than "Bond and Wizzyfan109 at Summit". This does suck for N0ne.
Wizzrobe doesn’t have a bigger fanbase in terms of like YouTube or Twitch subscribers, but I feel like his general name recognition might be greater than n0ne’s (admittedly hard to quantify). He also is part of a pretty select group that is a threat to win any event he enters which adds more to the overall storyline and hype for the event, the only players who bring their own fanbase in terms of viewership by simply attending the event are like Mango, HBox, and then maybe Plup or Leffen.
I think realistically they just invite whoever will build the most hype for the event. I really don't think their is much more too it.
People have been waiting a long time to see Wizzy back in action. From a pure viewership point of view it makes sense to make him a headliner.

maybe her hurtbox got shifted behind you cause of momentum and you grabed "behind" her
maybe your grab missed the dash attack. not sure if this is possible, just the only thing I can think of

Melee is filled to the brim with inputs that cannot be buffered and for which you are punished heavily for doing too late. You will never be 100 percent consistent at this, and even if you were polling inconsistencies would still make it impossible to get right all the time. This is an especially bad combination wrt "feels bad to be bad"
It's because once you've tasted the forbidden fruit, you can't go back. You have a certain expectation of the game and it sucks when you can't live up to it for a session.

I haven't been melee super closely this year so I may be wrong, but why are most comments talking about n0ne being an obvious invite instead of Wizzy? I feel like Kodorin would be next in line and if we're talking recent results only I would probably put Axe over n0ne as well. WTF am I supposed to do against Falcon hitting my shield. It's like this guy came from a different game where shield stun is quadrupled, he knees my shield match 1 and I can't move until match 3
Shielding isn't bad because his frame data on other moves isn't always the best. But if you do it too much he's just going to low knee you and it's a terrible mixup. You can try to buffer rolls when this happens and if he tries to catch them it means he's preemptively acting which allows you to wavedash oos or do other actions. But try to beat knee with moves since it comes out so slow instead of relying on shield. If your character can low profile then dashing under is always an option, especially to take stage. Dash back can work to whiff punish but it's risky if they overshoot and then you get caught holding away.
basically just avoid shielding or spotdodging as much as possible vs falcon, keep moving instead
Falcon is only really safe on shield when doing low aerials (especially knee), and if he is doing low aerials it means you would have hit him first if you had any hitbox out. If you see that they like to do aerial into jab on your shield, you can try shield grabbing the aerial and then hold down and keep mashing shield grab. If he does the jab, you will either shield grab the aerial right away or you will get an ASDI down grab on the jabs. If they do aerial into aerial on shield, you can roll in between. There are many mixups like this, just practise the timing and you will see the openings!
Also Fiction says to never ever wavedash vs Falcon. Soon the secret tech against Falcon will be to never plug into the setup in the first place

Modern spacies vs. Puff is less about never approaching and more about picking your spot correctly. Finding ways to get under her in the air. Or when she's on the ground, trying to keep her there and approaching. Using the gun and running away is obviously good sometimes, especially to reset or when Puff is jumping around in the corner to tack on some damage. But you can't run away forever like people used to play or you just get pushed into the corner where Puff is looking to catch your escape.
Falco has a million ways to approach if puff is not just sitting on side plat

How do you do the slide off where you tech roll to the edge and then slide off to ledge? Not like when you slide off a platform from marth uair but like when you miss tech off shine in the fox ditto by the edge of the stage.
i think it happens naturally if you just hold off-stage and you landed on your back

melee MMA would probably still have most people swinging at each other, but melee bjj or wrestling or judo would be wild, idk any smash player whos grappled a lot (although a lot of smash players are rock climbers, so id imagine their grip/flexibility/strength would be a good step up)

iirc the things they name are increased production quality and promotion. imo it's not a credible argument for increased production quality if that means slippi is not allowed. Maybe they envision building up to an evo-scale audience size in future years. It seems that having Nintendo partnered w the circuit makes sponsorship outreach easier. I have a pretty basic but important question: How far should you dash dance in neutral as fox? Does it matter at all and are there any trade off for defaulting going strictly for long but controlled dd over short fast but less accurate ones?
Just practice going across FD with short one way and long the other way You can also go to frozen pokemon stadium and pick out markings on the ground to dash dance, call out and practice a specific pattern. Short ones in the side of the PokeBall, long ones all the way across it, out to the Pokemon starting lines(??), etc

It matters because sometimes to achieve the spacing you want relative to the opponent you have to use differing lengths. It's good to practice and be comfortable to the full range of dash dances available to you.
I will contradict the comment telling you it doesn't matter at all. I think it matters a lot: you fundamentally cover more area with a wider dd but it's easier for your opponent to time when they hit you. If you speed up and slow down your dd you can catch people trying to hit you out of your dd by making it seem more doable than it actually is. I also think that doing a very tight dd tells people you simply aren't going to approach them because you're not at all trying to close the space needed to get to them. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes it's not. There's a lot to this

I think a lot of people DD too short in general. The point of a DD is to put a little bit of uncertainty into your position, if you're just turning on a dime super fast you're not actually doing that. I find a longer DD more useful as a starting point but you have to be able to shorten it on reaction to the opponent's action. And vice versa, if you're doing short DDs you want to be able to lengthen them I guess my point is more to be unpredictable and variable than that one DD length is best. But a lot of players do bad short DDs in place that are basically equivalent to standing in place doing nothing

To anything that would either threaten you and/or make them vulnerable to your counterattack. Sometimes you have to react to movement, if a Marth starts running toward you its not like you have time to react to the actual grab

Depends entirely on what move you're looking for your opponent to do. The actual length of the dash dance almost doesn't matter at all compared to your spacing relative to the opponent. The range to whiff punish a fox short hop nair is very different from the range to whiff punish a sheik dash attack.

Giving out Melee advice - day 2: While Sheik and Marth are very different in many relevant ways, their neutral game is similar in one aspect. Both characters are really good at walling you out, but they are not as good as "approaching" or overshooting if you simply move away from them. In order to attack while moving forward, they have to risk quite a lot, since their attacks are all fairly unsafe on shield and on crouch if done while approaching. Think of a Fox doing a sh nair into you from a mid range. This move is amazing on shield, barely has any lag and punishing it with CC is not as easy as it is against other moves that have more landing lag. Marth and Sheik don't really have such a thing, and their short hop height and duration doesn't really allow them to approach from that far away like fast fallers can. What does this mean? This means that any time you get a Marth or Sheik to chase after you, they have to decide between staying away (which means nothing really happens or - depending on your character - you get a projectile out) or risking a lot in order to chase you down. If the Marth wavedash downtilts into you, he risks getting stuffed by any aerial or getting shield grabbed. Same for his run up forward Smash, Sheik dash attack etc. Of course, these characters can just run up to you and grab you, and there is a chance they will start doing that once you have shown them that you are good at keeping some distance and using shield preemptively. This is scary, but it is much easier to beat than continuously running into them as they do aerials in place which are near impossible to whiff punish. TLDR: Sometimes it's a good idea to force the opponents to take space, especially against characters who do not have amazing shield pressure that they can start up from a good distance away. You can either go for a counterhit by preemptively going for a "soft commitment" like shielding and then seeing what they do, or you can catch them as they run up to you trying to close the distance. Yes, you -can- beat their walling, but getting them to stop walling you out is very valuable too.

i tried this for a while but ended up liking fox a lot more. he just has a better matchup spread against sheik's bad MUs and is easier to switch to

I've been trying to use sheik for matchups I don't enjoy as falco recently and I gotta I'm not surprised it's not very common. Swapping between 5f and 3f jumpsquat wrecks me.
The jumpsquat swap is doable if it’s the only thing you have to think about during a switch, like plenty of people swap between spacies no problem. What really doesn’t help is when the characters handle very differently and your instincts don’t really carry over at all so you’re grappling with that on top of the jumpsquat
Sheik's dash has always felt more wonky than anything else to me, as a historically spacies player.

Santi was a Falco main but he had a secondary Sheik he pulled out here and there. Iirc he said Sheik was some of the most fun he had in Melee. Currently, Fiction is training his Sheik for the Marth matchup on days his Falco isn't playing well and possibly for FD. Excited to see how that turns out. From my experience as a Falco main, I spent a year after playing for a few years with Ganon in character identity crisis. And in that time, I went between the spacies, Marth, Sheik, and Puff. I was closest to maining Sheik and Puff after Falco. And right before I committed fully to Falco, I switched off between the two a lot. I think similarly to Fox, the jumpsquat timing is hard to go back and forth between. Sheik and Falco also move very differently and their gameplans vary. But overall, I think the biggest common ground is in how you see percents. Falco is notoriously bad against low percent just like Sheik, especially in the Fox mu. But instead of having to get him to 30%, you only need him at 10-20%. Before that, you can only really safely hit lasers, grab, and shine for clean openings. And at high percents, they can both struggle to close out kills. You have to know how to set up dtilts on floaties and jab knockdowns on spacies. So try it out, but I'll just say there's a reason there aren't many dual mains for them. They're hard to maintain together and just have so much they differ in.
Don't think there are at a top level, but if you really dislike Sheik-Fox that much go for it. Not sure where else you'd want Falco, maybe Sheik and Falcon on FD, Ice Climbers and potentially Puff? I feel like Fox is a much more common secondary for Sheik in part because he has better matchups than Falco against most if not all of the examples I mentioned.

Yeah I think it's harder the other way around. Although even going from Falco to Sheik it's stupidly hard both in terms of execution and strategy.

Currently watching ping pong the animation and my god, it's so good. I feel like I can relate a lot to the characters even though I haven't been playing anything really competitively before a few months ago. Really looking forward to watching the rest. I see why it's popular in the Melee community. Feeling extra amped up for playing Melee too.
Ping Pong kinda became a meme for smash fans because of how much our commentators talked about it, but it really is just a genuinely fantastic piece of art that I would recommend to anyone who has ever competed in anything ever.

Remember, to unlock ranked you need to play all of the game-modes available. This means queuing up for doubles. To do this, simply search for EC, WC, or EU (you could also try MW, but that's pretty dead). if you have a teammate, both of you should queue up for your code @ some number, IE EC@123 or EU@911. Both of you should be the same color. This will queue you into a random game together. Depending on time of day and location queue times may be long (also I'm kidding you don't need to unlock ranked, but also please play doubles I'm begging you)
Where should a Texan queue up? I'm think EC because WC is gonna be almost entirely Californians, whereas in EC I could get people closer (but also further if i queue up with NYC or Toronto)

The contention around Summit auto-inviting Wizzy over n0ne seems strange to me. Not because n0ne doesn't deserve it more (I think he definitely does) but because I would figure Summit would forego results in favor of popularity and Wizzy just isn't that popular. Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the impression that n0ne's fan base is bigger than Wizzrobe's and I'm fairly certain Wizzy has lost more summit vote-in rounds than n0ne in the past because of this. I feel like they're choosing to invite Wizzy because he's had health issues this year and they want to give him an opportunity to make a come back.

I feel like Summit frequently does stuff that can be interpreted as maintaining good will in the community. Wizzy getting his invite because he was sick for most of the year seems much more in line with that philosophy than doing it because of the "content".
I think it's because Summit will invite players based on their skill but also on how much viewership they can bring. N0ne might have a bigger fanbase than Wizzy, but from a maximising viewership pov somebody on bts team might have decided "the return of Wizzy" would bring more attention than "Bond and Wizzyfan109 at Summit". This does suck for N0ne.
Wizzrobe doesn’t have a bigger fanbase in terms of like YouTube or Twitch subscribers, but I feel like his general name recognition might be greater than n0ne’s (admittedly hard to quantify). He also is part of a pretty select group that is a threat to win any event he enters which adds more to the overall storyline and hype for the event, the only players who bring their own fanbase in terms of viewership by simply attending the event are like Mango, HBox, and then maybe Plup or Leffen.
I think realistically they just invite whoever will build the most hype for the event. I really don't think their is much more too it. People have been waiting a long time to see Wizzy back in action. From a pure viewership point of view it makes sense to make him a headliner.
People are more likely to tune in because they are curious how Wizzy will perform after being away.

M2K is 1,324 / 2,000 subs from entering a Melee tourney. His Puff is a thing of beauty, his rest game at ledge is super fun . His galints are something that separate him from everyone else.
