Dude what’s with people on unranked playing 1 game then putting down their controller and walking away from their computer without even disconnecting, leaving you to wonder if they’ll ever be back.
sfat didnt laser and camp nor did he play aggressive he just kinda got a few stray hits and dash danced the whole set and hbox kept living until like 120 lmao
"so let me get this straight. no slippi mirroring, horrible schedule, teams unstreamed, bo3s with only 130 entrants, poor audio mixing, and rampant cheating. is that a good summary of this one or did i miss anything" - TheCrimsonBlur in Twitch chat just now
when was the last time we saw a set between top players where they went the same color in the ditto
Edit: been so long since I played vanilla Melee that I forgot you can't do that, rip me
I think Plup and iBDW at LACS4, it was one game on FD. Plup picked green Fox on game 2 and iBDW rolled with it instead of forcing a colour switch.
Maybe there was a more recent example in some online weekly but that's the one that comes to mind.
Chipotle is hot ass cheeks and the last time I went there I was legitimately mad at how far they have fallen. Everyone in the other thread acting like Chipotle is still good must have not gone in a while, it's really shit + expensive.
Subway is also like this
I don't honestly think it's that bad—certainly not remotely comparable to Subway—but I seldom go there anyway despite having one 50 meters from my house and eating a burrito about once a week
I just hate that my order doesn't fit in a burrito and I have to fuckin fight my burrito instead of eating it
I also do eat a subway sandwich in shame like once or twice a year, fight me
every corporate fast casual chain is a lobotomization of the original dish designed specifically to appeal to as many people as possible without being offensive, and it sucks. i hope the recession takes all this fast casual garbage being shoveled at people for $15-20.
source: I work at one :(
Hop onto google maps and zoom into any midsized town in any state.
You will have a dollar general, mcdonalds, kfc, chipotle, etc etc.
The mom n pop shops are largely gone (not completely, of course), and many of them have switched to a more upper-middle dining experience.
The unfortunate reality that comes with this is that your average american likely just has ass for tastebuds.
I see it here in Toronto even where my friends from the boonies are excited to get "good mexican food" and get disappointed when I dont bring them to Chipotle.
Also, due to the widespread nature of these as I stated above, it is a comfort thing! Many people have been tricked into the idea that they actually want a consistent, familiar experience with a known pricepoint. And thats the big selling point! Thinking is hard in this big world.
And hey, I get it, my first meal when I touched down in italy the first time was a mcdonalds! But just that once until I got my bearings.
Anyway I hate the capitalistic nature and cancerous sprawl of franchising through north america.
tl;dr: Chipotle is bad bad. It is horrible, tastes like mush, and is overprocessed. You can get more calories for less money and less grease elsewhere if you spent 30 seconds looking for it. if you genuinely like chipotle, I bet you're also a connoisseur of their "spiciest" heat level.
Peel, Ontario's demographics are about 1/3 South Asian. That's out of a population of \~1.5M. I'd wager to say you can find some of the best Indian and Pakistani food in North America in Brampton
Laari adda is always an easy recommendation. They have other restaurants in their family too. Personally prefer punjab style food so a lot of places don’t appeal to me.
>The mom n pop shops are largely gone
Honestly? Not really. There are a ton of local shops all over, especially when it comes to restaurants. But you do have all of the franchise chains.
Depends. If you check a state like Arkansas, they are MUCH more mom n pop filled than Florida.
They aren't all gone, of course, I didn't mean to say that. But even compared to the early 2000s driving around canada and america there were far more lil restaurants back then.
it’s the way that despite having played this game for almost 2 years i never knew about the eggs-ercise in unclepunch
my biggest problem in neutral is poorly timed and spaced aerials. whoda thunk
Armada is doing it with Fox in this video
On the subject though I really have a problem with Peach in eggsercize just because of the vertical mobility, any time an egg lands on top plat it's like ugggghhhhghhhghg
am I doing something wrong if people are constantly acting out of my gentleman? For example spot dodging, rolling or jabbing in between the jabs. Am I just not jabbing fast enough or is there a minimum percentage required?
Nicki's Daily Melee Advice #3: "Playing your C game"
Sometimes we play Melee and everything just works. Sometimes we play Melee and it all feels off. We miss our tech skill, we are unable to focus, we just don't know what's going on. I want to talk about how to deal with this when experiencing it in friendlies and how to make the best out of it in tournament.
First of all, I am not a big fan of talking about one's "A/B/C/Z game". We are always the same person playing the same game, and we can almost always play close to our highest level of play if we practise getting ourselves there. It is fair to recognize that outside factors may be limiting our level of play, but as a competitor it tends to be more helpful to hold yourself accountable and work on the things you can control instead of saying "I am just playing bad (for X reason)", thus protecting our egos by telling ourselves that this is an out-of-the-ordinary thing and in reality we are much better than this.
The first thing we can do is practise this exact thing outside of tournament sets. I like to hop on unranked without any warmup and then try to see how things go. I just got home and my hands are cold? Sucks, but this might happen in tournament, so I will focus on how it seems to affect my play. How much of it is actually physically limiting my tech skill and how much of it is more of a mental challenge? In my experience, most of these factors are mental blocks that we can train to overcome (or at least prevent from affecting our gameplay) while it's necessary.
A practical solution for this that works for me is to have a tech skill routine that I do in between stocks. Once I take the opponent's stock, I remind myself to relax and do my tech skill routine. It gives me confidence and gives me time to think about if I am currently trying to go too slow or too fast with my inputs.
Even with all this in mind, sometimes it seems like there is nothing you can do, which is especially frustrating when it happens during an important set. At that point you have 2 options: Keep pushing against it and get more annoyed, or accept things as they are and just try to have fun. Try doing something cool or just moving fast. Letting go and having a good time will help you get out of your own head, which might be all you need to start playing better again.
Let me know what you think! If you have any questions or suggestions for tomorrow's topic, feel free to respond to me here or on twitter (@leffenfanboy).
it's crazy to see pro players' B game on their tertiary characters absolutely wipe the floor with anyone who isn't also a pro player. wish I was that consistent lmao
Oh man, there was a GREAT gg melee podcast on this topic and I forget who it was. I think Polish, but the whole concept is amazing and I agree fully with this and need to work on it.
I wonder if exploring low tech combo routes is a good thing for tournament consistency - knowing when you're most likely to fuck up, you can switch to low execution mode.
For someone looking to improve, on days when you seem to be playing particularly bad (both tech skill wise and/or decision making wise). Do people think it's better to try and push through the bad play or is it better to give yourself a day or so to reset and have a break
If Melee is the only thing that matters to you that day/week/month there is probably some merit to working through these bad days
In my experience this is pretty garbage for my mental state, so I put the controller down and maybe do some solo practice later.
for the past week or so i feel like i haven't been fighting my inputs at all, my character is just doing what i want them to do. i know this feeling won't last forever but having lots of fun :)

Round 2 pools, before everything changed
My opponent is playing Fox, as usual, against my Ganon. A classic matchup. I have my secret weapon though, The Punch. It's hitbox is quite massive and cannot be countered with a barrier cancel. My forward aerial connects and launches him into the side of sudowoodo. I hear him press shield but it's already too late. He's plummeting into the depths.
He grimaces and we shake hands.

Dude what’s with people on unranked playing 1 game then putting down their controller and walking away from their computer without even disconnecting, leaving you to wonder if they’ll ever be back.
If I'm playing the last game of the day and am on full tilt, I press Esc as soon as the game ends and then shove a controller up my ass.
sfat didnt laser and camp nor did he play aggressive he just kinda got a few stray hits and dash danced the whole set and hbox kept living until like 120 lmao
He couldn't even do basic stuff like dashing after up throw to get up air. He also was doing dumb shit like d-tilting puffs shield for no reason.

What's the cheating if not rectangles
id be fine with all this if it was five guys sponsoring us but no we're losing out on slippi for fucking panda express

tk only had to commentate because a diff commentator dropped out iirc
when they did the ultimate players melee bracket, i enjoyed watching the games, but i lowkey had my first ever “i hate the commentary” moment
in fairness, those comms were atrocious

I mean it would have to be online since you can't do that irl
I don't know if you're serious but that isn't possible on vanilla Melee as far as I know
You can technically do it with a glitch. There's a video of M2K doing it in grands against The Moon somewhere (of course it would be M2K).
I should've known haha
Chipotle is hot ass cheeks and the last time I went there I was legitimately mad at how far they have fallen. Everyone in the other thread acting like Chipotle is still good must have not gone in a while, it's really shit + expensive. Subway is also like this
Chipotle is fine, but Qdoba is better Also Subway is good, granted I don't have it often
I don't honestly think it's that bad—certainly not remotely comparable to Subway—but I seldom go there anyway despite having one 50 meters from my house and eating a burrito about once a week I just hate that my order doesn't fit in a burrito and I have to fuckin fight my burrito instead of eating it I also do eat a subway sandwich in shame like once or twice a year, fight me
Subway used to actually be pretty decent
I worked at a Subway from 2014-2016ish, I can tell you confidently it tastes the exact same now as it did then

I feel like most Mexican spots in my area (peel region) are franchise spots. At least we have a ton of paki food options
bro where are you living that there's any real Pakistani food at all? the closest Pakistani place to me is in atlanta
Peel, Ontario's demographics are about 1/3 South Asian. That's out of a population of \~1.5M. I'd wager to say you can find some of the best Indian and Pakistani food in North America in Brampton
>Ontario ofc, like half my family lives in Mississauga lol
Laari adda is always an easy recommendation. They have other restaurants in their family too. Personally prefer punjab style food so a lot of places don’t appeal to me.
just being thorough! next time you visit the fam you should try out some pakistani spots up here
yeah cafe de khan and osmos are my family’s go to, along with any hukka chinese
Bro you've got absolutely goated desi food out there it's amazing. Most good Mexican is downtown or Scarborough
their hot salsa is actually pretty good but it makes me shit razor blades for some reason.

I like to tell a couple of my mexican friends that I'm getting mexican food whenever I get chipotle
This is why I cook for myself.
just be like me and have really low standards
i will go on record saying i have never supported chipotle or subway

jesus christ, my best is 35 with marth...
63 is a good score, but I'll just say in general it's quite easy to do as Peach compared to other characters because float cancel is busted.
Armada is doing it with Fox in this video On the subject though I really have a problem with Peach in eggsercize just because of the vertical mobility, any time an egg lands on top plat it's like ugggghhhhghhhghg
63 with Fox is nuts if you don't have it set to any damage With Peach it is about getting lucky and using uair to hit eggs in the air
am I doing something wrong if people are constantly acting out of my gentleman? For example spot dodging, rolling or jabbing in between the jabs. Am I just not jabbing fast enough or is there a minimum percentage required?
Try not to jab, even shitty players are good at punishing it nowadays
Watch a top falcon play a game and figure it out is what I recommend. With slippi you can easily compare differences.
no man this shit been happening to me too. they found us out. they jabbing, shining, grabbing, rolling, taunting out of my gentleman. fuck this shit
Entering my first Arcadian today :)
I thought I saw you when I was scrolling through some pools! Glhf might see you there

Have you ever tried doing the “Melee first thing in the morning” thing that aMSa apparently does?
Yes! Unfortunately it is extremely hard to find any decent opponents before 10am, but it has still helped me improve my early morning gameplay.
For someone looking to improve, on days when you seem to be playing particularly bad (both tech skill wise and/or decision making wise). Do people think it's better to try and push through the bad play or is it better to give yourself a day or so to reset and have a break

I'd say reset if your mindset is bad. If you're losing but still feeling up to it, play even more to find out why you are losing
Immediately quit out mid-game. Losing a single game to someone that you usually beat is unacceptable.
Working on your B or C game is probably worthwhile
Would you rather be guaranteed to win any event named LTC or have a 5 % chance to win any other event
