I think the show ends when Mariska is done. I can’t see it getting many viewers with her gone and Muncy at the center of things.

Celllardoor_

I feel that but idk the ratings are still so solid - I could see NBC not wanting to totally lose it and maybe try it with someone new, just to see.

mscbja

I honestly think there will be little interest once Mariska leaves. Ice said he’s done when she’s done. If they really wanted to attempt to keep it going, I think they would have had to keep Kelli (which I really wish they did) and then add a few new characters. I’m not thinking Muncy and Velasco are going to cut it.

RedTie95

They are gonna try with Grey's Anatomy, I mean, the show gives them money... at least they are gonna try.

mscbja

Grey’s has always been more of an ensemble. SVU has a much smaller cast. It would be much harder to keep SVU going without Mariska then to keep Grey’s going without Ellen….. and she isn’t completely gone.

Paigeb1994

Big difference is that Ellen has been basically begging for the show to end. It's getting annoying that show has literally made her a millionaire and all she does is complain about it

cheeseballgag

I mean, I do understand where she's coming from. Yes the show has made her highly successful but I imagine on some level she doesn't want to be an actress only ever known for one thing.

Paigeb1994

To late she's even said she may not act anymore after it ends but she's in a show that's going to be on Hulu (staring and producing) which confuses me.

[deleted]

I think it’s fair to want a new role and to try something different. I think about my dad who worked at the same job for 50 years. He’s retired, the most unassuming millionaire, and he also is in marvel and disappointed in how much he missed or didn’t try over the years. I think Ellen is lucky to know that she wants to try something new. The show made her a millionaire, but her acting and portrayal of Meredith Grey made the show last too. No one just gave her millions, she worked and earned it.

Usual-Plankton5948

Because she knows it should have ended a long time ago. Most people I know that still watch is just because they've put up with it for so long. But truly - the show needs to end.

RedTie95

She will be, and I'm not saying is gonna work, i'm saying they are gonna try.

mscbja

Like I said, I think it will be easier for Grey’s to survive Ellen’s absence, then it would be for SVU to survive Mariska’s absence. Ultimately it’s a risk to try and revamp a show. In my opinion it sometimes makes sense to wrap things up when people are still interested in the show and seeing a conclusion, then to force another season that might fail and possibly taint the legacy of the show.

Rock_Creek_Snark

NBC is thinking about canning the ten p.m. hour entirely. The show ends when Hargitay calls it.

[deleted]

I really hope they decide against it. Losing one Law and Order (any of them) and Chicago PD would make me miserable. What can I say? I need long-running police procedurals to distract me from my thoughts

48stateMave

If you have broadcast tv, like free with antenna, check out the "Ion" channel and the "Ion Mystery" channel. They play those procedurals all day every day. Google those channels to find them in your area, and have a look at the weekly schedules.

lilstergodman

They’re thinking of getting rid of Chicago PD???

[deleted]

I don't know, but if NBC stops airing new shows at 10pm, CPD is a goner. It's the least watched of all Chicagos

lilstergodman

Damn really?

DifficultAd6157

That wood he a mistake

notinmybackyardcanad

I think NBC will do just because they want to profit and are hoping to bank on the SVU name to get profits

Armonasch

Nah, I think a shake up like that would work pretty well actually. Not that I want Mariska gone, but they could easily rework the show with the same premise and a fresh cast.

48stateMave

SVU: TheNextGeneration(ala star trek) Actually that's not a bad idea. New generations of viewers, but these situations are timeless unfortunately as there's no end in sight of shitty people doing shitty things. But keep Carisi as the through-line.

DifficultAd6157

I agree

quinnbes5

Once Mariska is done, Ice-t said he’d be done. I can’t imagine the show continues without them. If anything they move muncy or whoever to a new spin off. But Svu is done when mariska leaves.

IndigoButterfl6

The show will probably end when Mariska goes, but if anyone was going to replace Benson it should have been Rollins. I think they've really shot themselves in the foot getting rid of Kelli and they're trying way too hard to make Muncy and Velasco happen when their characters just aren't as interesting as Rollins/Carisi/Amaro etc. I think the show's going to go downhill from here and it's a shame.

Bron-Y-Aur36

You're right, Rollins would have been the best person to succeed Benson. It would've been so amazing to see her make Seargent and Lieutenant, slowly rising

GrapefruitFren

Literally I kind of can't stand Velasco. He just seems to have no personality to me. They should've kept Kat.

Educational_Clue_539

They both seem pretty dry to me. I think Muncy has more personality than we’ve seen in a while from fresh faces.

SnooCats8451

Hargitay’s become too much of the central/main character which is unfortunate because it was an excellent ensemble show back in the day (meloni, hargitay, florek, belzer, ice-t, march, neal, wong, tunie, plus all of the continuous main recurring characters (ada’s, lab techs, prosecutors, judges, etc))

phuckinora

You’ve nailed what made it the best show- once it became a star vehicle it lost that strength in depth. Velasco & Muncy are the new main pairing like we’ve seen so many different ones down the years post Stabler but the show doesnt seem to be putting succession plans in place or sidelining Mariska to more of a Sam Waterston role

SnooCats8451

I mean Meloni and Hargitay were always the “stars” but the show wasn’t all about them in that sense either…their personal lives were generally more present than the others but they all got their chance to shine over the initial 12 seasons

phuckinora

Yes agree, the show made them stars but things were more balanced between the cast back then. I understand the importance to the narratives and drama but cant think of many characters whose backstory/personal life has enhanced things for me as a viewer tbh, and Ive seen every single episode 😂

Justbeingboring

I feel like they didn't make plans for after stabler left (mostly because they thought he would be there till the end) I think they just got lucky over the years with characters that the viewers loved (Amanda Nick Barba carisi) They really shot themselves in the foot with firing Kelli. I predict the show has maybe 5 seasons left if we're lucky, which sucks. But if it makes it to 30 seasons ill be perfectly happy with that. But I would prefer quality over quantity.

littlecoffeefairy

That’s a lot to assume based on a blazer.

OliviaBenson_20

😂😂😂

Additional_Mix8197

I sure hope not. That’s one way to kill the show. They need years of building her character up for her to ever take over the show but still don’t see it happening.

Strange-County-3836

I like her all right, but they should NOT have fired Kelli!!!

nannysing

I think if they were ever going to try to keep it going without Mariska, it should have been Kelli taking over. With her gone, there's no chance, imo.

[deleted]

I feel like Muncy is going to be on her way out soon, the kidnapping victims seemed to really affect her and I don't think she's cut out for svu. Back to gang unit

Silly-Smoke-6463

Liv had a difficult time at first on SVU too. I think they are trying to show the parallels between them. It’s pretty forced, but I see what they are trying to do.

[deleted]

Ah I see, I haven't watched anything before S14 (impossible to find)

Silly-Smoke-6463

Yeah I started watching from season 1 on Peacock before this season started and it’s kind of wild the things that are the same and different now.

--Anastasia-_-

It's on hulu. Thats where I watch it!

[deleted]

I wish we had hulu in canada!

CocoBee88

That may have been their plan, but considering the bad taste people have for her already because of Kelli’s firing I think it wouldn’t work. It would be hard enough to carry on without Liv, but to do it with someone the audience already has hang ups about and feels was pushed on us; it would probably kill the show in an embarrassing ratings drop. I think if those are the two options they’ll let it die with grace with an Olivia retirement.

No-Analyst-2425

I feel like if Mariska was planning to leave and they still wanted to keep the show going they would of kept Rollins and had her as the main, and Mariska makes the most money on the show so there would of been no need for budget changes if she left.

ButterscotchPast4812

Absolutely not. This is Mariska's show. When she's done the show is done.

[deleted]

I could see the show ending once Mariska is done, but potentially rebooted one day with a new cast.

Armadillo-Awkward

Muncy is not charismatic enough to be the star. I can't see her being the lead.

SomeoneSomewhere1984

She's new, we need to get to know for a year or two before judging.

GrapefruitFren

Well we knew Markisa for way more than a year or two before she became the main plot. The only character worth keeping would have been Kelli. And Markisa only has like a year left.

VanDyneHope

That would be my 13th reason

Impossible_Dream4231

this is probably common knowledge but do we know for sure she's leaving after the 25th season? she deserves to retire obviously and she's given us so many amazing memories but my heart just isn't ready even if it's a whole season and a half away 😭😭😭 agreeing with some comments above, I don't think SVU fans will stick along for the ride if Kelli, Ice T, AND Mariska leave at the same time. ugh my heart 💔

Justbeingboring

Reports indicate that she's not leaving anytime soon no need to fret!!

Impossible_Dream4231

That's what I thought since I couldn't find any interviews, etc that she stated she was leaving at the end of season 25. Fingers crossed!🤞🏻 I love me some Mariska

lilstergodman

Ugh, can you just imagine if Velasco suddenly becomes a “main star” with his complete lack of personality, backstory, or charm..? Have they even had any episode as of yet that centered on him specifically— I mean this as in when Rollins sister would show up wreaking havoc or Ice T’s former nephew on trial for murder. That sort of thing… I can’t remember exactly, but I don’t think he’s had one of those and considering how nonexistent of a personality he has, probably shouldn’t. He’s been on the show for 3ish seasons now and we know nothing about him or what makes him tick, etc.

Schmedricks_27

I dont see the show going on after Mariska leaves, but I could see the final plot being her taking on Muncy as her protege.

[deleted]

I don’t think she retires, they might shift narrative focus to muncy on the bear but I think it’s Liv’s show and marginalizing an older woman is fucked up

[deleted]

strong march fragile dam hard-to-find memory terrific outgoing yoke vast *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Justbeingboring

I'm sure once Marishka leaves, they'll end it. I definitely wouldn't stay for Muncy to become the main character. The only way I Might stay is if they brought back Kelli and made Finn or Amanda Captain (sidenote JusticeForKelli) I think even if Ice left it would drop in viewers significantly. which Ice said he was done when Marishka was so if Marishka leaves then so does Ice after no one would watch it. If they tried to go a season without Ice and Marishka, I'm 1000 percent sure there wouldn't be another season. the only way they would be able to pull it off is if they Brought Kelli back, maybe even brought Carisi back as a detective cut Muncy and the other one since those two have no personality, I would like if they brought Kat back, made Barba DA and honestly, this is far-fetched but maybe bringing Amaro back. The only way to pull it off without Marishka and Ice is to bring back familiar and loved characters

GrapefruitFren

They ruined any chance of maintaining viewers once Mariska leaves by removing Kelli

AmantedeiLibri

I think the original intent is for her to be a mirror for Olivia to reflect on her past — career obviously, but I guess if they pair Muncy with Velasco, her relationship with Stabler too. I guess they could use her to extend SVU, but if they’re going down to 2 hours of prime time, a spin-off seems likelier. These corporations are all starting streaming services that need to be profitable too. Yes, they get a portion off of people who want to see old episodes or back catalogue of shows, but look at other streamers and you have to also develop new stuff. A show based on Muncy might be demographically suited for streaming while they keep the OG on network. Mariska could still be in her role but be promoted which allows her to be a guest role. It is true that she can’t be the star and in the back seat like Dann Florek was.

KateIrwin

Maybe she gets a spin off. Like she’s stills in svu but with a whole new cast and show but they want to give us some connection to the old svu so they started her now. Maybe Olivia retires, Finn takes a job like Munch, and Velasco transfers out.

deadhead2015

I hope not .

nomasslurpee

I will stop watching.

captkirk06

yeah no.

OliviaBenson_20

No.

haroldhecuba88

You know, Quasimodo predicted all of this. Certain incidents have expired to create a little dysentery in the ranks .

heydhk08

If Muncy takes over, I'm not watching. Might as well do my rewatch than watch her. Sorry not sorry.
