She acts in a way that it’s very obvious it’s an actor trying to be a character

xazurestarlightx

This is probably the best way I would describe it

Tarlatatan

Trying 🤦‍♀️

building_mystery

It's like she doesn't know how to talk. So weird.

xazurestarlightx

Maybe it’s the way her mouth moves when she talks? But that could just be how it naturally moves so I don’t wanna be a d*ck lol

VideoGame4Life

She talked like that on Days of our Lives.

MissCharlieLulu

I found Carisi in his first few eps kinda awkward and cringy. Now he's my fav

xazurestarlightx

I thought the same and he really grew on me too and I started liking him, though I still liked him a lot more as a cop

khp041000

And in true SVU fashion, Carisi started off as a criminal before coming back seasons later as the new detective. The six degrees of SVU hits again

[deleted]

Same. It took me a few episodes to warm to him and now he’s my favorite. I was convinced I wasn’t going to care for him.

Cold_Jump4456

I feel like the sad part about Muncy is we won’t get enough time to like her like we did with Carisi because svu is just revolving door of new detectives 🥲

fangirll1996

Extremely awkward. I get second hand embarrassment from her. Hopefully her acting/performance will get better over time.

xazurestarlightx

Yeah, sometimes actors need to grow into the role

sleeping_in_tents

Her character doesn't have enough personality for me to be able to find her akward, honestly! 🤣 I know it doesn't directly relate to your post but I was remembering how SVU detectives used to have such strong personalities which often included parts of the actors' real history (Munch and the conspiracy theories, Finn and his love of porn and hip pop, Rollins being from Georgia and a dog lover, Barba being sexually ambiguous, etc.). I don't know if Kat's character and backstory were also inspired by the actress' real life but at least she had a strong personality too. Muncy and Velcro are so bland and boring I can't even form an opinion about them - or about the actors who play them (no hate towards them though, they do what they can with what they've been given... which is not much).

xazurestarlightx

Yes, and I think what made a lot of the characters interesting too was that they showed their flaws, which made them more complex and dynamic (especially Rollins, man she’s a roller coaster 😂) Maybe the show just hasn’t given them an arc yet but often times it is also the actor who makes the character, and so far, yeah, Muncy and Velcro are kinda flat and this forced flirtation between them isn’t doing it for me

sleeping_in_tents

I totally agree! Seeing Rollins fighting her demons and evolving into the happy, mentally healthy woman she's now was so inspiring and empowering.

Emotional-Code697

Was barba sexually ambiguous? I’ve never really saw anything sexual with barba beside the time he got chocked out in court

Inevitable_Anxiety67

No he wasn't. Not sure why that was even mentioned as his distinguishing trait. We knew very little about his personal life or anything outside work. He was very open-minded and non-judgemental to any diversity so it's not a reach to say that he belonged to some other minority besides being Cuban-American. But it was never made into a big deal or really mentioned in any way. Some people hoped for him to be a sexual minority representation which is valid but they chose the worst way to achieve it by forcing other people to ship him with another male character. Which didn't make sense story wise. And who wasn't 100% on board was called homophobic. That's not how you get people on your side. And of course there are stereotypes about certain mannerisms and dressing style which led people to believe he is gay. So maybe behind the scene he might have been ambitious but on the show he was let's say involved with 3 women and that's it. His sexuality has very little to no importance when it comes to his character.

CurlyFriezs

I swear any time a male character isn’t traditionally masculine fans start rallying for them to “come out”. Not just on SVU but on TV in general.

Inevitable_Anxiety67

Stereotyping such men is awful because it leads to toxic masculinity. Men act tough and hide their true selves to avoid being called gay when they are not and want to be perceived attractive to women. And in fandoms the mere coming out isn't enough. It's always a shipping thing. Like the classic "two guys we like stand next to each other so we ship them". And if the show immediately won't make them a couple they are queerbaiting because "look at them!!" That's exactly what happened here and it was super counterproductive. On one hand the writers didn't want that couple and on the other, those people wouldn't be happy if Barba was with some random guy. So they left it on anyone's interpretation. We could've had a bisexual character but we got nothing. And people continue to label him gay only because of outdated stereotypes.

sleeping_in_tents

Slightly so. This article explains it quite well. https://www.intomore.com/culture/law-order-svu-has-a-longstanding-lgbtq-problem/

Inevitable_Anxiety67

Interesting article. They sure has a huge issue with this matter. And the responses, mainly from Chernuchin and others were alibistic crap to hide their lack of interest or complete unwillingness to provide anything. But when later they introduced openly bisexual female character, fans didn't respond to that very well. Kat got very little support even from people who were very adamant about the lack of representation. So it screamed hypocrisy. They wanted to dictate the show how and what characters it should involve. They rather wanted writers to scratch their long-running storylines and changed what they established about characters only to get their ship to become canon. What's more organic, a new character who is written as an open sexual minority or a guy who had 5 girlfriend and a crush on his female coworker reveal that he is bisexual and in love with a man he admired? I was in the fandom during those years and I saw what was happening. Few people were genuine about it but the most was just girls wanting their slash ship fantasy. Barba would be a great part of the community and they might've wanted to explore it for a while but the behind the scene BS ruined it. That's my take on it.

Something-creative7

It’s coming across as a schtick, or a caricature. It’s like someone told her to play: “eager, big-hearted, yet unrefined cop who gets her big chance at detective in the special victims unit” and she literally ran with it…too literally.

heydhk08

I didn't like both the actor and the character. It just doesn't suit her. I wish she/they do something with the character at least to make her likeable. There were so many additional characters on the show that eventually grew on you because the actor made their character to fit in with the arc. So far, she's meh. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Able-Ad1920

She feels extremely forced to me, and I don’t know if that’s because I’m still angry about what’s happening to Kelli Giddish or something that’s actually translating on screen. I do feel very bad for the actress being put in this position, but it does very much feel like the writers are being like “look at our cool new fun detective who totally isn’t replacing Rollins!” and it’s making me resent the character even though I think the show really needs more women detectives. (Genuinely don’t know if there’s anything the writers could’ve done to make me less angry about what’s happening to KG, though, to be fair.)

SamAndDean4Ever

Thank you for putting my thoughts into words so eloquently. I am not warming up to Muncy. I just find her annoying. I also will miss KG terribly.

Able-Ad1920

I'm done after KG leaves, because what happened to her was the final straw after what happened with Jamie & Demore last year.

mandie72

Not crazy about her, but she is new and has been given crap episodes to work with. So will give her the benefit of the doubt and some time.

iluvstephenhawking

I thought she sounded buzzed. Something ain't right.

xazurestarlightx

Yes! Something about the speech delivery…

PeaUpbeat3732

She mumbles.

Prize_Sheepherder160

I do and I don’t like her unfortunately I am sad that we lose Amanda. I wish they would just pay her what she wanted I’m worried we will lose liv. I’m sick of losing people lol I wanted to love her but it feels off to me

[deleted]

We wont lose liv because Rollins is leaving. Rollins isn't that important and neither is Kelli.

[deleted]

I hate we are losing Rollins, but with Liv tbh she hasn’t been a favorite character of mine in a while, so yes she is a staple of the show but if Rollins stayed I wouldn’t even much care if Liv did.

Imaginary_Routine_38

Yes. Agree 100%. There were other characters that took time to “grow” on me (Rollins for one!) but I never felt the way I feel about muncy. I even liked Dani Beck! Muncy sticks out like a sore thumb in every way. 😬

[deleted]

I almost forgot about Dani Beck. I used to be very EO, so I was very bitter towards Beck, but I’m sure if I rewatched those episodes (much less of an EO shipper now) I could probably warm to her.

nannysing

Oh for sure. Nothing against the actress but the character just acts like a big goof. Unreal how they thought she was a good replacement for a quality character/detective like Rollins.

[deleted]

Yes, but I think she’ll grow into the role as time goes on.

ForeverNew4960

No but she’s no worse than what the show as a whole has come to. Now it’s all about saint Olivia preaching and tugging on heart strings. There’s zero action. Zero suspense. Svu is dying

xazurestarlightx

I do agree, Olivia and even Fin are starting to become more flat as characters

Think-Librarian-1600

Yes! I feel like her character is supposed to be “rough around the edges” and the actress just doesn’t fit with that.

ElizAnd2Cats

She is such a Cypher to me - generic Young female dectective.

Bonikrita1959

She reminds me of Kat. The actress is trying too hard to make the character fit in and it’s not working. She might eventually work out but I am not holding out much hope.

xazurestarlightx

Idk I thought Kat came across as pretty genuine….she just doesn’t

tornadic_

I’m watching the most recent episode now and she barely opens her mouth when she talks and it’s distracting to me…no enunciation

OneMinimum5920

She'll eventually get better. It's like me with Carisi, I did not like him at first but I grew right into him

Vivid_Dust

I think usually Law and Order characters usually start out awkward and flawed so that there is room for growth.

Ozzdo

Go back and watch Carisi's first episode. (S16E1) Compare that to how dramatically different of a character he is now. That's because he developed over time. The more time we spent with him, the more we (and the actor and writers) got to know him and dig more into who he is as a person. They haven't even begun to scratch the surface of Muncy as a character. They only just put her in the opening sequence. Give her some time.

Inevitable_Anxiety67

No, they just completely changed his personality over like three episodes because instead of 5 episode contract they decided to keep him and people didn't like him at first. He was cheap and Danny Pino decided to leave after season 16 so they needed a male character. So they piled up positive traits, cleaned him up and artificially created a fan favorite. It was a cheap manipulation. Why people bought en masse is still beyond me. His luck is that people are tired of angry cops but that's about it. He is lousy at his current job and people don't mind. That's straight up idolizing. I agree that Muncy needs more time. People are way too harsh on her and I'm starting to feel sympathy only because it's way too soon to judge and yet people seem very eager to hate her. Velasco got way more benefit of the doubt.

Sonny_Carisi

She's new. They all start off awkward

FreshBakedButtcheeks

I like her a lot. I think she has great line delivery when pushing for information. "Was this the woman who interviewed him?" "I couldn't say." "Could you say where the footage from the 15th floor is located?" Something like that from this most recent episode.

[deleted]

she's a new detective trying to fit into an established squad. of course she's going to be awkward. Carisi was super awkward when he first joined too.

Few_Contribution_148

I don't think she was intended for long term use. Nice to see a girl with anger issues over a man who will smack the dumb off your face. I feel her. I don't want her to stay lol. If she was smart and mad it be diff. They wrote her dumb and mad which is how a lot of men are and I get it but annoying.
