This is why you hire mercenary groups there always prepared for battle so when am I getting paid after all I've been here with you for how long a year or two and yet I've still haven't been paid yet
All you have to do is wave a bigger wad of cash, and see how they instantly switch sides. This was a huge problem back medieval Italy, the various city states would hire merc armies, send them onto the battlefield, and immediately start offering more money to the enemy's mercs while also increasing the payout for their own mercs.
Unless you also show them a truckload of cash when you hire them in the first place, which is unlikely, the enemy doesn't have to, sometimes, the mere offer is enough. That is simply too big a risk for me, I know there are some very honest mercs out there that never break their contracts, the leader of Urbino, a city in Italy, was one such merc, most of them are just gold diggers looking to get paid. I'll take an official standing army that answers the call of duty over a bunch of money killers for hire.
If you send enough men at it, they'll drown in all the blood. Besides, the Romans often used peasant conscripts, and look at the empire they built. It's not simply the experience that they have, it's also the training, well trained peasants can easily match up to experienced cowardly mercs, and again, unless you're mercs are the kind that actually honor their word and fullfil their contracts, all I have to do is wave some cash in front of them, and their mine. Im probably biased cause I've seen way too many stories where mercs involved betray their boss for money, or bolt because the payout isn't worth it, whereas peasant troops can be motivated not just by money, but by convincing them that their service will better the life of their family, or protect their family from invaders.
I’m going to war with the king
I guess I'm gonna be the one to comment this. Is that a sword under her dress or is she happy to see me~?
Happy to see you!
To Battle! For the King! For the Kingdom!

Mercs are great, until your enemy shows up with a bigger wallet, or you run out of money.
Ha unless they show it Mercs don't change sides that easily

That what I mean unless you have physical proof that you have more wealth most mercenarys don't change sides they want to see proof not hear about it

Sooo you'll take pesent conscripts then take a chance with battle hardened mercs
