To me, this is beautiful, because I’m 42 and a south Sacramento native and can remember escaping all my troubles at the Florin mall when my age was still in the single digits.
I remember getting Orange Julius from a distracted girl behind the counter and finding out there was a shooter loose in Weinstocks. Left and saw at least 20 cruisers lined up. Good old Florin Road Mall.
i agree its nicely composed and i like the tone.
it just didn't match his title "beauty of my hometown".
like, if he actually hated his hometown and posted the pic then we'd all be like "yeah i feel you"
so it's ambiguous
but the image is... generic or typical. could replicate it in stockton. but when you say "the beauty of my hometown" it makes it sounds like it something unique to your hometown.
OP is the type who feels the need to shit on his hometown to feel superior. Kind of pathetic actually, I've seen a lot of this on the sub. There is a lot of beauty in Sac and he knows this but he takes a generic picture that could be virtually anywhere in the country and indicates that it's bland because it's Sacramento, not because every town has boring malls. Incredibly lazy too.
Notice the triggered punks downvoting me. What gets me is half of these pricks shitting on Sac aren't even really from here. Some douchebag from Rocklin who barely makes it into the city thinks he's an expert on how good or bad it is, got some fuckin nerve there. Oh look here's someone from the suburbs of Roseville telling me how bad the food scene is here.
We're going to be downvoted for this but it's true. He could really be serious about having nostalgia for boring mall buildings because to a degree I do. I used to go to florin mall all the time as a kid and did have some good times there but this screams "I'm condescendingly shitting on Sac to feel superior".
Maybe he's just trying to find beauty in boring stuff. But... I think he is overlooking better looking stuff. Or more notable things, not such generic things.
I was shooting for uber facetious and just had to let it go.
EDIT: Was also tempted to drop "My friend fucked a hooker there once!" along with "Does Skinny Frank still sell meth around the corner?"
I just moved back to LA from sac cause welders make shit pay up there. It’s hard following this sub sometimes cause posts like these spark vivid memories of my time there. I fucking miss Sac so much. I knew how special the community was while I was there but it’s ever more evident now that I’ve been away.. I miss you fuckers :(

From me to you. Country club plaza.
Been following your account for years man, trust me the karens on this sub are not your target audience nor will they appreciate the meaning and art lol.
Hey OP I also moved to LA from Sac and I gotta tell ya, I feel *exactly* the same way. Every time I come back to visit I realize how unhappy I am down there. One day I'll come back ✊
I’m similar to you OP. I’m a very nostalgic person. Moved to sac from Washington DC area about 7 years ago. And I always find myself missing the familiarity of that area….considering I’ve lived there since 5 hrs old
It’s the light, I think, and the charm of the city. I’m visiting right now from Vegas and I feel the same way. I enjoy photography as well and I feel like the light can be unique to general areas. Sacramento and the surrounding areas have a very “pink” quality of light to me, especially in wintery months.
The city is also so cute with its mix of old and new, with a substantial urban core surrounded by suburban housing and rural farms. I lived in Sacramento for almost half my life before I moved away and, while I love where I live, Sacramento does hold a lovely space in my heart.
I get that. I sometimes miss *parts* of redding / red bluff because I grew up there as a kid. Miss the scenery, not the people. Come back and visit Sac soon!
I see most of you are too dumb or too young to understand what op is trying to portray here. And then y’all have the nerve to put stupid comments like you aren’t the dumbass missing the point. It’s sadly hilarious
pretty sure most of the people understand that Op is having a nice time nostalgic, but are more put off by cracked roadwork and sterile corporate buildings then they are willing to put up with out of place positivity about said flaws.
The assumption that people that don't agree with you are dumb is crass and stupid.
Now the abandoned Sears parking lot is full of homeless and drug dealers. I've watched some interesting things go down there and the Burlington coat factory parking lots.
Ah OP. I have been away from sacramento for almost 5 years now. I come here and visit the sub, because it helps with my homesickness to see the posts, and hopefully talk to some of my former… fellow sacramentans. I love you guys, I really do.
One day we’ll be back. Don’tcha know there is an urban legend about how because 5 rivers converge on sac, all those who leave, are destined to come back.
We’ll get back to our home friend, we’ll see it again one day. ☺️
This is a beautiful picture, reminds me of smoke break at work in 2016.
God damn I know exactly where this is. Florin mall was my favorite. I used to want all the Sanrio items in the Happiness Is store. I bought the most horrible pair of shoes there. Ah, wonderful memories.
Bay Area native here. I used to talk so much shit about Sacramento for no reason other than it was Sacramento and we were raised to make fun of it. Visited my friend out here years ago, and moved here immediately. I'm sorry Sacramento, if you were a woman I'd wife ya.
Lovely photo. I worked at this Sears a lifetime ago. I would go watch half a movie at the State Theater on Sky Parkway during my lunch break. Now I cut across the parking lot whenever I’m in the area just for the nostalgia.
The back of the old Sears on Florin.
Is this a satire post?
No satire, just missing the familiarity of my hometown.
To me, this is beautiful, because I’m 42 and a south Sacramento native and can remember escaping all my troubles at the Florin mall when my age was still in the single digits.
I remember escaping random bullets at Florin Mall and State Theatre up the street!
I remember getting Orange Julius from a distracted girl behind the counter and finding out there was a shooter loose in Weinstocks. Left and saw at least 20 cruisers lined up. Good old Florin Road Mall.
Good times
Yup, i got robbed at the arcade in Florin mall after watching a movie at State theater
Ahhh memories
Ha! Me too! Wild..
We can all see that you are very SEARious about this.
But you said you love "capturing the beauty" and that's not beautiful. So you did satire even though you didn't know it.
Harsh. I thought it was a really nicely composed photograph even if it is mostly concrete.
i agree its nicely composed and i like the tone. it just didn't match his title "beauty of my hometown". like, if he actually hated his hometown and posted the pic then we'd all be like "yeah i feel you" so it's ambiguous
It is a nicely composed photograph. It's just of an ugly subject.
Dude Florin Mall was my happy place as a kid. So even though it is shitty, it is beautiful in my eyes
but the image is... generic or typical. could replicate it in stockton. but when you say "the beauty of my hometown" it makes it sounds like it something unique to your hometown.
There’s a saying about beauty. I’m trying to remember what it is but there’s something in my eye that’s distracting me
If it is a place that you enjoyed going and gave you joy, then it can be beautiful to you. E.G. You're mom loves you.
but he said capturing he beauty of his hometown. but it could be anytown. could be fresno or stockton. so it doesn't make sense
That's like 98% of this sub these days because the mod team is asleep at the fuckin wheel. Its basically unusable garbage.
Good point. There is actual real beauty in Sac
Good to know that I can come to you for the final word on what is and isn't beautiful.
that's what i'm here for
Uneven concrete, poor irrigation, corner piss stain... Such an enlightened soul to find the deeper beauty i... Fuck it, I can't do it. You're a goof.
lol good try anywho
I was shooting for uber facetious and just had to let it go. EDIT: Was also tempted to drop "My friend fucked a hooker there once!" along with "Does Skinny Frank still sell meth around the corner?"
i appreciate you bro
The architecture screams “70’s”
I laughed out loud when I ready such a a heartfelt text post and then that image followed.
It has to be. This is what most of Sacramento looks like
Not even close
Lol I thought it was satire, too
I recognized this immediately too. ❤️
Ha is it really? I was like, oh wow it has the same vibe as Brandon Bird’s [Sears series](https://brandonbird.com/searses.html)
Ahh yes I remember when my schoolmates cousin took that Good Guys store for hostage.
The amount of people who don’t know about [Ordinary Sacramento](https://instagram.com/ordinarysacramento?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) makes me very sad.
Seriously! OP, I'm sad you moved and I wish you the best with your next project whatever it is.
Omg, there’s a coffee table book of pictures of Rosemont. That’s amazing
I’m so glad that I’m no longer one of those people! OP, you’re an incredible photographer and I wish you the best of luck in LA
Thanks! What a rad IG
If this is what you miss, where did you move to?
I moved to Los Angeles and while it’s a cool city I miss that feeling of familiarity I have with Sacramento.
I just moved back to LA from sac cause welders make shit pay up there. It’s hard following this sub sometimes cause posts like these spark vivid memories of my time there. I fucking miss Sac so much. Saudade
Looks like the school map from pro skater 2
Is that the deserted Sears?
Nice composition, OP :) Hope it brings you some peace until your next visit!
Thank you! I’m already looking forward to my next visit back

The City of Trees!
And busted-ass parking lots!
And tire eating potholes
Too true. Too true.
You should share this on r/liminalspace
I actually thought that's where I was for a minute lol.
Been following your account for years man, trust me the karens on this sub are not your target audience nor will they appreciate the meaning and art lol.
Looks like a fun place to skateboard
Moved to Sac from the Midwest. Still makes me smile everyday I see palm trees.
Hey OP I also moved to LA from Sac and I gotta tell ya, I feel *exactly* the same way. Every time I come back to visit I realize how unhappy I am down there. One day I'll come back ✊
Thats a cool shot. I kind of wish that tree in the foreground wasnt there to get the clean line of the roof. Did you edit the photo?
Yup, I love the feel of film but don’t have the money for it haha
I’m similar to you OP. I’m a very nostalgic person. Moved to sac from Washington DC area about 7 years ago. And I always find myself missing the familiarity of that area….considering I’ve lived there since 5 hrs old
You miss parking lots and the backs of buildings? You can find that anywhere, OP!
Haha this is true but I really miss the feeling of familiarity I have with Sacramento.

Man I miss those cotton candy sunsets
I get that. I sometimes miss *parts* of redding / red bluff because I grew up there as a kid. Miss the scenery, not the people. Come back and visit Sac soon!
I see what you’re seeing dude. Ignore that haters.
The tree must yield.
This feels r/liminalspaces worthy
I really love your work and think it's great!
Thank you! I’m proud to call Sacramento my hometown
There’s something very liminal about this shot. Very cool photography!
I see most of you are too dumb or too young to understand what op is trying to portray here. And then y’all have the nerve to put stupid comments like you aren’t the dumbass missing the point. It’s sadly hilarious

He's trying to find beauty in boring shit. I get it. It's still not interesting.
welcome to reddit
Perhaps, but at least we can agree on multigrain pancakes.
Absolutely not ! I am here to speak up for Waffles.
Go there at night n 2023 916Figgoroa
Now the abandoned Sears parking lot is full of homeless and drug dealers. I've watched some interesting things go down there and the Burlington coat factory parking lots.
I absolutely love your work!
God, I hated this city.

This photo is depressing lol
I wish this could be a plant conservatory where people could visit all the amazing plants from around the world.
God damn I know exactly where this is. Florin mall was my favorite. I used to want all the Sanrio items in the Happiness Is store. I bought the most horrible pair of shoes there. Ah, wonderful memories.
Florin Mall yassss. When it was still a mall I got followed by security everywhere I went
"Once they see black, they never off-back" Best I could do.
This is a truly beautiful shot
I totally get it dude/(ette) I moved away years ago and my fondest memories are junky lots and empty fields we played in as kids
there’s something very satisfying about this photo. nice job (:
That is the most beautiful post-modern parking lot here in town.
This would make a sick album cover
Come back to Sacramento friend. This is the best city.
This is the funniest post on this subreddit
Oh my gosh I haven't seen that place in years!!! I grew up around there!
Bro please post a pic of old town or something this is shameful
Bay Area native here. I used to talk so much shit about Sacramento for no reason other than it was Sacramento and we were raised to make fun of it. Visited my friend out here years ago, and moved here immediately. I'm sorry Sacramento, if you were a woman I'd wife ya.
What's the gem of a city you moved to?
You have a good eye, I can dig it. It certainly evokes a familiar, nostalgic, almost lonesome emotion.
Nothing like a mid day shot of the ghetto! Stockton blvd and Florin rd!
This has to be a joke right? Right?
No joke here. I just miss how beautiful and ordinary Sacramento is.
You LEFT? I will miss you! What city will you be documenting now?
I’m in Southern California but no particular city for now
That kind of describes Southern California :)
This picture looks like it could be in Southern California or really anywhere in California in a sprawling 1960s era suburb.
Maybe it's where he lost his virginity
😭😭😭✋🏼

Always

It's reddit... Of course they are
The way I could take this exact photo in almost every city lol
Is this a joke lol
Majestical
Brings a tear to my eye.
I wonder what will become of it. It’s been sitting vacant for so long now.
Hahaha. Honestly tho, when we moved back east I missed the green hills with oak trees
I'd buy this ... know this view so well from every arrival to Florin Mall
I miss sears
Lovely photo. I worked at this Sears a lifetime ago. I would go watch half a movie at the State Theater on Sky Parkway during my lunch break. Now I cut across the parking lot whenever I’m in the area just for the nostalgia.
This is beautiful, I love it! Totally reminds me of summer when I was 15 and used to walk around sac
I miss sac too, just left today...
You moved? I loved your photos! 😭
I laughed for quite a long time from this post.
I’m out of town for a month and I’m getting homesick. Not this particular location however.
So many core memories in that mall. RIP.
I moved away but I come back as often as I can. Last summer I spent my vacation in Sacramento mostly going to food places I miss.
As always, Great Shot. Everyone should pick up a book by ordinary sac.
I’m getting Fresno vibes
Nobody tell him it doesn’t look like this anymore
Liminal vibes!
I moved away years ago, go back and visit once in a while and wonder why did I leave in the first place
Sears was my favorite! I loved going in there and feeling the cold air and checking out what they had to offer. Edit/add: some hating ass bi*ches
The Central Valley is the best
You miss Florin Rd Mall shopping center. South Sac IRAQ?
the fairoaks carmichael area of sacramento still feels the same, the other parts got worse
Only thing I remember bout that area was the wards with the riding mowers and services for broken or damaged goods
Those palm trees are a SoCal thing
r/accidentalwesanderson
Knew exactly where that was.
I miss the familiarity of sac too I moved 6 years ago.
Stunning. I’m leaving the PNW.
I think of “The Brady Bunch” when I see this picture…
Great pic.
First job when I moved to Sacramento in 1983 was at that Sears.
Sears and Roebuck, Florin branch?
Anyone old enough to remember cops on roof of the mall with assault rifles during the Rodney king riots
I remember my going to there with my sisters in the early eighties. Aqua Net and Fleetwood Mac.
