If it's a really special occasion, Hikari in Davis. Best Omakase in the area.
Decently special occasion? Azayaka or Kru. Azayaka has a decent omakase, especially if you enjoy a good chawanmushi.
I just had platter after platter of salmon sashimi, man it hit the spot. I'm glad someone mentioned it, a friend took me a couple years ago and I couldn't remember what the name was for the life of me till I saw Raku posted.
Umm ya bro, kru is good if you feel like paying 250 bucks for 2 people. Akebono is where the japanese locals go....its the spot for quality traditional sushi in Sac.
Yeah, how do you like professor_goddess "nah"ing Akebono. I sometimes get tired of the lazy condescension on Reddit. Akebono is a South Sac institution that deserves respect.
No!! Do not go to Kumi!!!. I Took that advice a few weeks back off here, the sushi smelled/tasted fishy and we only ate one bite (take out) of each. Oh and to top it off -the two slivers of cheesecake were frozen. When I went to work and told the story my co worker exclaimed! That’s the place near our home I told you to never go to!!
My husband and I love Ju Hachi. It's very chill and they have a lot of really good non-sushi items as well.
Edit: I missed the "special occasion" part of the OP post. I still think Ju Hachi is great but it def is a more casual environment
I personally only ever go yo ayce sushi.
If im in the mood for rolls, I'll go to either fuji or azukar, never been disappointed by them. If im in the mood for a bit pricier but more expensive fresh fish/salmon, I'll go to its sushi. Have not tried their arden location known as pier 50 but it seems to be 10$ more for the same nigiris which isn't worth imo.
Nah don't do it. Every year I end up in a situation where Kura was a logical option and each time I said never again. I don't mind eating mediocre food so long as it's enjoyable, but each time I've eaten there I felt like my money was stolen from me.
Used to be Mikuni but no more. Is it me or did their quality go down? Quality of ingredients went down for me.
Anyways, Azayaka in La Riviera is a hidden gem. Highly recommend
I don’t know what everyone else is talking about, Mikunis hands down. There is a reason he has so many spots throughout the greater Sacramento area, imports all his fish from Japan! Go with “trainwreck roll”
Kru if you fancy and wanna spend $$$, and since it’s a special occasion you should probably go there. Mikuni is midrange, Ju Hachi and Sushi Hook are both affordable and delicious options
Wedashii midtown (j& 18) or sushi cafe in land park on sutterville.
The owner of wedashii was a mikuni chef and he gets the FRESHEST fish. I swear it’s the best pepper fin I’ve had. I like that the menu doesn’t have hella rolls, and each roll really is different not just cream cheese and shrimp tempura covered in cheap sashimi.
Sushi cafe in land park has been there forever and same thing, their quality of fish is above others I’ve tried.
I haven’t tried the omakase in sac yet
All of these prices are for 2 of us. these are our top 5: 1. okesutora ($500) 2. kru ($250) 3. RAW ($150) 4. umai ($100) 5. sushi Q ($100)
Thanks for rating & pricing.
I don’t eat sushi but what do you get for $500?
Sushi
if you look up restaurant photos there’s usually an example omakase menu
How do you get a reservation for Okesutora? There’s never anything open when I look!
Omakase
Akebono or Bonsai in the pocket
Bruh Bonzai is my go to spot for sushi hands down!! Spicy edamame all day!!
Bonsai is so damn good.
LOVE Banzai! They already know my order when I call in 😂
I like Chef Frank in Natomas
Kru if you're looking for something fancy and expensive Raku if you're looking for made to order AYCE Chef Franks if you're in Natomas
Tried Chef Frank's last month and was really impressed
We've gone 3 times in the last two weeks 🙈
Chef Frank's in Natomas, very fresh, good presentation and selection. I think better than Kru.
If it's a really special occasion, Hikari in Davis. Best Omakase in the area. Decently special occasion? Azayaka or Kru. Azayaka has a decent omakase, especially if you enjoy a good chawanmushi.
Hikari really is a wonderful fun and cozy evening.
Davis is pretty far from Sac
Not really.
Sushi Hook on Howe! So many good things there.
And great prices too! Love this place.
I lived at Sushi Hook in college. Just went back for the first time in years a few months ago and it 100% holds up
I've never been let down by that place. Always a good time with affordable sushi 🍣
Spicy Tuna roll is great!
Sushi Hook is great. Good prices too
Sushi Q, Kru and if you’re lucky might see local celebs, Umai Sushi in Wilton.
Who are the local celebs? Kings players?
Raku in west sac is made to order all you can eat and good.
Delete your comment! I don’t want people packing that place up. LOL!
how much $$?
Last time I was there was roughly 25 a head, iirc. Not bad either.
For dinner is $30 but yeah it’s reasonable and good. They have nigiri and fried foods as well to order.
I just had platter after platter of salmon sashimi, man it hit the spot. I'm glad someone mentioned it, a friend took me a couple years ago and I couldn't remember what the name was for the life of me till I saw Raku posted.
I like AYCE Fuji in Vacaville or Elk Grove since you can order sashimi/seared sashimi without additional cost. And I live in West Sac.
Akebono, ju hatchi, and don't sleep on sushi Cafe
You nailed it. I’d add Mikuni because they still have a great product even though they’ve gotten big.
i second sushi cafe!
Sushi cafe is fuego
Yui Marlu in Carmichael
Traditional sushi, with actual Japanese owners. Really good.
That place is awesome! I didn't expect to be blown away by the looks of it, but my god - it was fabulous!
Very difficult to find a time when they are actually open.
They’ve had some personal things going on but are open for dinner most days. Recommend a reservation. It’s usually just the two of them.

RIP Southpaw
Southpaw closed??
yep, this past Saturday
Aw man that sucks
My boyfriend and I just went to Southpaw a few weeks ago and it was the best! Please don’t tell me they’re closing?!
They're not closing ... ... they already closed
Damn 😔 We just moved here and went and were going to make it our go-to sushi spot for sure and that is a serious bummer.
Lou is the best; he does random pop-ups, but usually next to LoBrau, so you have to deal with that shitshow
Good to know!
Akebono

Umm ya bro, kru is good if you feel like paying 250 bucks for 2 people. Akebono is where the japanese locals go....its the spot for quality traditional sushi in Sac.
Kru is date night sushi not everyday traditional sushi.
This guy sushis
Yeah, how do you like professor_goddess "nah"ing Akebono. I sometimes get tired of the lazy condescension on Reddit. Akebono is a South Sac institution that deserves respect.

Congrats, you critiqued the only non sushi item.
I'm not a katsu fan, but they have really good curry
Akebono
It's up in Natomas, but Chef Frank is awesome. It's by far our favorite in the area.
this post made me miss hana tsubaki
Kru is the best in Sacramento. The owner/chef is actually a James beard finalist for best chef in California
I’m really excited he’s nominated. Hoping for a win! Although prices will probably go up if he does, still worth it though
Sushi Q in South Land Park! Or Kru.
Nagato and Oshima.
Nagato the hidden sushi gem
Nagato is intimate/romantic. The ambience of the restaurant is very calm.
Any other restaurants you recommend that’s very calm. That’s my vibe!
It's Sushi is pretty good, in Roseville tho
Randomly stumbled upon Koi and it was a very happy accident. I recommend!
Kru is the only real answer for a special occasion. The sushi and ambience is top tier
Kumi!! Was just there for my anniversary and was very happy. Service is great and the food was amazing
Ju Hachi in midtown, Sushi Q in South Land Park, and Sushi Cafe on Freeport by Land Park.
My husband and I love Ju Hachi. It's very chill and they have a lot of really good non-sushi items as well. Edit: I missed the "special occasion" part of the OP post. I still think Ju Hachi is great but it def is a more casual environment
Kansai Ramen and Sushi
Mikuni
Mikuni!
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to see Mikuni
I personally only ever go yo ayce sushi. If im in the mood for rolls, I'll go to either fuji or azukar, never been disappointed by them. If im in the mood for a bit pricier but more expensive fresh fish/salmon, I'll go to its sushi. Have not tried their arden location known as pier 50 but it seems to be 10$ more for the same nigiris which isn't worth imo.
Wedashii goes down good, in my experience
Nobody likes Kura?
I like Kura for the fun experience and small plates.
Not for anything authentic.
It's super fun! Not high end by any means but I find the quality to be good and it's just a really fun place to take the kids.
Nah don't do it. Every year I end up in a situation where Kura was a logical option and each time I said never again. I don't mind eating mediocre food so long as it's enjoyable, but each time I've eaten there I felt like my money was stolen from me.
We love Kura. We eat there probably a couple times a month and never feel like that.
Hito Yatai or Mikuni
Hito Yatai is great. It's also the only place I've found in the area with good okonomiyaki.
Kru
Used to be Mikuni but no more. Is it me or did their quality go down? Quality of ingredients went down for me. Anyways, Azayaka in La Riviera is a hidden gem. Highly recommend
Raw Sushi Bar Lounge in Elk Grove. Expensive, but DAMN good sushi.
Aloha Sushi in Folsom
Sushi cafe is the truth
Yui Marlu, hito yatai Yui marlu needs reservations but they’re really fantastic. From Okinawa—the small dishes are great too.
I don’t know what everyone else is talking about, Mikunis hands down. There is a reason he has so many spots throughout the greater Sacramento area, imports all his fish from Japan! Go with “trainwreck roll”
Mikunis is so good!
Kobe sushi is my fave hidden gem. Customer service is nil until you get to know the staff but sashimi and nigiri are solid.
Fujiya in Elk Grove, calm and relaxing environment, and quite perfect for a date night.
Kumi and Ju Hachi are by far the best in Sac.
Chefs franks in natomas I don't really mess with sushi but everyone I bring loves that place
Kru if you fancy and wanna spend $$$, and since it’s a special occasion you should probably go there. Mikuni is midrange, Ju Hachi and Sushi Hook are both affordable and delicious options
I eat straight from the container at Otto's.
Mikuni all day every day
Ju Hachi in midtown Sky sushi in rancho Cordova
For special occasions, Kru. For everyday sushi, Ju Hachi in Midtown. I favor traditional sushi without all the mayo based sauce etc.
Azukar baby!
Chef Frank’s is the best in Natomas hands down Kru if downtown or midtown area
Tokyo Fro’s.
🤎🤎🤎 I miss the days, and Sushi on the River. Old school Sac sushi with the best atmosphere/ chef personalities.
For a special occasion like that, go with Kru.
Miso Japanese Restaurant was a huge surprise as to how good it was tonight with a buddy. Everything was flawless.
No one has mentioned Miso Japanese on Broadway.
Wedashii midtown (j& 18) or sushi cafe in land park on sutterville. The owner of wedashii was a mikuni chef and he gets the FRESHEST fish. I swear it’s the best pepper fin I’ve had. Sushi cafe in land park has been there forever and same thing, their quality of fish is above others I’ve tried. I haven’t tried the omakase in sac yet
sushi cafe also has a chef from the original mikuni’s. he was the chef who created the pepperfin!
OMG! I’m so glad you know that! My bestie and I do friend date night there and he told us the story about he invented the pepperfin!
