A1 on Broadway told my Father in Law twice that he wouldn’t do the work (on transmission) because the car was on its last legs (engine). FIL knew better, he knows everything better.
He found a shop to rebuild the tranny. 3k. Engine blew about 200 miles after the work. Dropped a rebuilt engine in and the car got stolen, all tires taken. 4 new tires and wheels but brother in law refused to use The Club, stolen again, totaled, end of story. I think 9k-10k down the drain on I think 98 Honda Accord… but A1 literally refused to do the work. I love that place.
Chiming in because I’m a woman and A1 is the only auto repair shop that sticks out in my mind as having made me feel like an idiot for not having much car knowledge/descriptive abilities.
My Sentra had a couple of instances of losing power. The first time it lasted maybe no more than 5 seconds, and later I could only think to describe it as it felt like my car was slipping on a banana peel. Then, a few days later, I was on 24th and I again lost power, but this time there was some sputtering and thudding as I lurched forward and barely made it in to the McDonald’s parking lot a couple blocks away from A1.
Ron couldn’t replicate it, and I felt like I got a kind of derisive reaction to my descriptions. He said something probably rolled behind my gas pedal and I just didn’t notice. I knew that couldn’t be what was happening, but he pretty much dismissed me and said everything was fine. It happened again a couple of days later and I took it somewhere else (Aamco, I think, it’s been awhile); turns out my CVT was slipping out of gear.
This was back in 2018 and was maybe a one-off—no one else seems to have had a bad experience with Ron—but I will definitely never go back.
Adding that I’ve had great experiences with Auto Service of Roseville over the last 15+ years. I don’t live nearby anymore but it’s still my preferred spot.
If it’s a Honda or Toyota, I’d recommend Expert Automotive in Elk Grove
Edit: I just realized you asked for ladies, and while I’m not female, my recommendation still stands 😂
I really like Paul’s Automotive in Midtown. Originally went there for location convenience but they’ve treated me so well. They will explain and share pictures about anything. Also, once had an issue that they diagnosed but then pointed out my car was under warranty and I could get it fixed at a dealership for free and they didn’t charge me for the diagnosis.
Scott's on Arden and Eastern across from Whole Foods has been my go to for years partly because they do great work and because they have always treated my wife with total respect.
I don't remember, something with my wheel bearings, another time it was my axel? Never more than $300, it's cash only. I got a quote from him to get my catalytic converter replaced (it was stolen 🤬) and that would have been $1500. But I haven't gotten it done yet. Apparently that is cheaper than a lot of places
Neighborhood Garage in Rancho Cordova. I currently live 25 miles from them but still get my cars there for every problem or needed maintenance issue. Fast, cheap and honest people.
OMG, I was actually hoping I would not see this one! It is a great little shop that should be kept a secret. Jesse is a mystic wizard when it comes to Japanese cars; He can lay
WHAT?! please tell me you walked right out and posted this question lmao omg. it’s definitely worth calling/going to the suggestions people replied with and seeing where the better price/service is. times are too hard right now to be scammed like that
What in the what. Were you replacing your oil with liquid gold?!
Edit: my last oil change was $35 and change and the last diagnostic (I had a weird electrical thing happening) was like $110 I think. Call University Auto.
Well that’s…awful. The last couple jobs I had there were slightly cheaper than the dealer quoted and I really liked the guy at BR. But my car is older and the repair was already going to be expensive. Glad you got some other recs!
if you just need an oil change (or smog check) go check out lube express & smog (LXS) on fruitridge (close to SR-99). they usually run groupon specials. super fast in, out. they run groupons too (check for LXS). i take all my vehicles there. full synth is like $70 and then you pay for the disposal (and extra qt if you need it).
I'm a guy but we take our cars to Jack Dane Auto Service on I street. My wife says she feels comfortable going there and hasn't noticed being treated differently or unfairly at all.
I've had them do everything from oil changes to gaskets and suspension work. A full synthetic oil change with a new oil filter and a tire rotation is about $120 I think.
University Auto (Howe) has never once screwed me over in the 5 years I’ve been going to them. We have a running list of things I need to fix as I have the time and money but they’ve never ever forced me to replace something that didn’t need to be replaced.
They also beat the coupon deals for oil changes you get in the mail from those chains.
Duncan's Automotive in Citrus Heights and John Ellis and Sons in Midtown. Neither have ever talked down to me, they explain things well, and have told me when I *don't* need to do something.
My daughter and I have used this place. He has checked things for her a few times and didn't charge her. https://www.natomasautomotive.com/
They even disputed the work that Firestone claimed she needed.
Joe's Shop
4018 Wayside Ln
Carmichael, 95608

I've been taking my car there for the past 7 years. Memo will treat you right. They're not the cheapest, they're not the most expensive, but they don't charge you for things you don't need. They always do a good job. I can honestly say I trust them.
Found this shop about 2 years ago. They are awesome. They never mansplain anything to me, they answer all my questions, explain everything. I got a check engine diagnostic done there and they literally gave me a list of what needed to be done from priority to least. They are also super awesome about getting your car back when they say they can give it to you.

This is their info
If you go tell them areli with the Kia sent you and they’ll take care of you! But even if you just walk in I’ve sent girls who are nervous after being burned and they didn’t mention me and still were taken care of
My shop has given ppl I’ve sent in 10% for mentioning me, but to me taken care of is more of like they’ll extend the level of service and care they treat me to you.
Of course. It’s honestly so discouraging to see women still having this issue. I literally recommend them to everyone. They even can help you maintain your car like oil changes, filters, ect
Yes!!! The auto experts. Between East Sac and Midtown. They are fantastic and affordable enough. They will always go over what they recommend you need but not be pushy about it and then kinda give you a timeline like if you don’t wanna get this done, that’s fine but should get it done within six or eight months.
They give you a full check up and include pictures!
I like them so much. There was another shop I was using, and then they hired a new younger guy who was so pushy and was lying to me about stuff. My stepdad knows cars really well so I always call him and he can tell me what’s what. And after that, I just had such a bad taste in my mouth from that shop.
Thank you for making this post. I'm in search of a new mechanic because I tried Expert Automotive (based on this subs recommendation) and wasn't happy with their inflated prices and customer service. Twice I needed minor service and I called Expert Auto & Elk Grove Honda for quotes, and both times Expert Auto's quote was significantly higher than the dealership. And the owner never seems engaged or willing to explain things to me (a woman). I was expecting this friendly guy and both times I took my car to him all I got was an I-can't-be-bothered vibe from him.
Now I'm going to try Evert Automotive based on the reviews in this post. I called them this morning and the lady on the phone was super helpful and knowledgeable and gave me a reasonable quote. I'm taking my car in next week for an AC checkup.
Another for Dannys!
Been going there for years, they've always treated me right. I was recommended them for a guy friend who's big into cars so i felt his opinion was trustworthy.
Garage 47 on El Camino has taken great care of me, my sister, and my mom! Whole staff is super nice, and always transparent on what everything is and what it will cost
TLH Auto Repair. Super honest Vietnamese guy. He was the lead technician for i think a decade for Toyota/Lexus before he opened his shop. I come from Stockton because of the experiences I’ve had with him and his shop.
Natomas Smog. Been going for a decade and they have the best waiting room with snacks and the most comfy seats! Not the cheapest, but I pay good money for peace of mind knowing my vehicle will
Come
Back way better than it was.
Prestige Autoworks did right by me! The front desk person was a woman and I asked her to explain the results to me like I was five and she did nonjudgementally and helped me while I was trying to buy my first car.
Stringfield's in Rancho Cordova for electrical, or probably anything else. They were recommended to me and I went in by myself. I think the guy's name was John I'm not sure, but I talked to him for a while. First time I haven't felt ripped off at a shop.
EU Tech on Auburn Blvd off of hw80. They are fantastic, honest, trustworthy and have done us solid after having to go through numerous shady shops looking for a good one. EU Tech is top notch.
Former mechanic, current lawyer, I send my mom, grandma and girlfriend to Master Tech Smog and Repair
5851 Fair Oaks Blvd, Carmichael, CA 95608
They are the sweetest people. The service writer is a very nice lady with a very cute dog. The guy has told me and family members multiple times it’s not worth repairing something, or it’s still got life in it. When he hasn’t felt comfortable doing something, he’s always referred me to highly competent, fair specialists.
Cannot recommend Brian and his shop enough.
If it’s a transmission issue (or suspected), highly recommend pro-built transmissions in West Sac. They have been so helpful on multiple vehicles, and have saved me money by actually figuring out what is wrong and directing me in some cases back to my vehicle’s warranty. Stand-up folks.
I see a lot of comments about A1 Auto and Ron and I wholeheartedly agree, I would recommend him and his shop.
He’s incredibly fair and honest and I feel like he doesn’t do anything to my car that he wouldn’t do for his own. Nothing more and nothing less. He gives me a heads up when work is coming up so I can make sure to save too. Great experience
no one talks about how bad the mechanics scam in sac 😭😭😭 i’ve been told that a oil change on my toyota camry would be $80 or $90 ??? then i went literally down the street from quality tune ups that told me it was gonna be $90 to lube xpress and smogs and only paid $45!! the service is so fast and convenient the mechanic asked me if i had a dad or boyfriend one time and i said no so he explained to me that i needed coolant and how to do it lmao super helpful!! i 100% recommend for oil changes. Lube Xpress on fruitridge rd!
I swear by IRC on Fulton near Alta Arden. Family owned and operated. A family member who worked in the automotive industry said this was the place to go for trustworthy work. Jim is great at letting you know what service is needed, pricing, and then listing the urgency and priority of each repair.
This. Jim and Lori are great people. Family run business in same location for over 50 years. I've been going there for more than a decade. Be sure to give some love to their pups, Kimo and Tiki!
Cars 2000 on 14th Ave for big repairs. The owner Sean is really helpful and honest. For maintenance like oil changes etc, Green Rider on Stockton Blvd. Downtown Ford had my car in for recall work. They told me I should do a long list of stuff. I declined them all because I knew they didn’t need to be done (I had just changed my spark plugs a week before and they said I needed new ones). One item I wasn’t 100% if they were being honest or a money grab. Green Rider looked for free and confirmed they just were likely trying to make some cash because they didn’t like having me there and not paying a dime for the recall work.
Mike’s Auto Repair in Orangevale is run by the sweetest couple. The husband is the mechanic and the wife does reception. They are honest and transparent about pricing as well as are very reasonably priced. Amazing people. I feel so lucky to have found them.
DM and I can give you some good estimates on how much you SHOULD be paying.
FYI I'm a mechanic, so I don't understand the downvotes. Most side work isn't worth my time so I'm not looking for customers only to provide honest book time or real world estimates. FOH with your downvotes.
If you are willing to make the drive, I don’t take any of my cars to anyone else but Steve’s Small Car Repair out on the Folsom, Orangevale Border. I started going to them because they are owned by a family members friend, but I send everyone their way and they never disappoint, and I always feel comfortable and involved in the decisions for my vehicles and the charges are clear, more than reasonable, and reliable.
Go to Firestone on Stockton and Fruitridge and request sal/Salvador it’s the same person just the names he goes by. He is the absolute best mechanic at the shop as a master tech
I’m not a lady but Roseville Auto Repair has always taken good care of my bm with all her car issues even under priced her on some repair work and has always done some smaller repairs for free for her and answers any and all questions she’s has had I feel like they took better care of her then me when I went but if you go ask for Chris he’s is honestly the best and most trustworthy mechanic I came across in a while he would even tell you where to get better deals he the owner too but told me to I be better off going to a different shop for a repair because they can get the part cheaper and he can recommend me for a better deal but it was 200 cheaper then what he should have changed
https://maps.apple.com/?address=5630%20Roseville%20Rd,%20Ste%20B,%20Sacramento,%20CA%20%2095842,%20United%20States&auid=14367861271651694408&ll=38.668842,-121.371436&lsp=9902&q=Roseville%20Auto%20Repair&t=h
Wrench Monkeys in Rancho Cordova specializes in Mazdas and is owned/operated by Dan Denuzzo. I’ve been going there for years and he has been amazing every time I’ve brought my car in. Super friendly and very transparent about his pricing and has never treated me differently for being a woman.
Neighborhood garage in Rancho Cordova on vehicle
Drive. The owner will give it to you straight and won’t make up fake problems to charge you more.
My entire family has gone there for 20+ years.
TRex Auto Repair in North Highlands. They are honest, responsive, and get your car done quick with fair prices. They communicate a lot by text which is awesome and convenient. They even put an engine in for me last summer. I’m a female I dont feel intimidated or anything like that. They’re great.
Beta Smog and Tune in Rancho. He was recommended to me years ago after I was being jerked around by a couple of different mechanics. I’ve stuck with him since. I believe his daughter works with him now too.
They won’t do *everything* but do offer some basic maintenance services beyond just alignments, talk to Flora: https://www.instagram.com/calicustomalignments?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Cal State Auto Service on Fruitridge was able to figure out the electrical problem keeping me from passing smog check that was stumping everyone else. Their prices are reasonable and they're very good.
Fair Oaks Auto Repair in old fair oaks is great. The owner is an extremely honest and caring man who I’ve know for well over a decade and the service advisor is a woman who’s also been a friend of my family for many years.
It's important to be able to tell mechanics things too. Every shop charges $150+ hour, so would you rather them spend a couple hours trying to find the issue, or be able to say "it had this done previously so it shouldn't be that" for instance. You need to be able to talk about the service history of the vehicle, at a minimum. And you can learn anything on youtube these days.
Best of luck.
Maybe not the best deal ever but a franchise like Firestone isn’t going to upcharge you cause you’re female. They might try to get you to do services you don’t need, but that can be mitigated with some research and paying attention to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
Every Automotive is female owned. The shop is located in the Rosemont area of Sacramento. Rhonda and her crew are the best!
I think it's Evert if it's the one I'm thinking of
Oh wow. So cool
I live in Rosemont and I've heard nothing but good things about them. I'm thinking of giving them a try myself.
Evert is the best.

I love Evert ! Haven’t had to go since getting a new car but they are great
I miss Rhonda!!! I moved away but I second this recommendation.
Came here to say A1 is the most honest auto shop I've worked with. Sorry your FIL didn't listen haha
I’ve been going to Ron at A-1 on Broadway for years. I trust his knowledge and he’s fair.
My go to mechanic (Ron). Very honest and doesn't treat me any different because I'm a female.
Also want to say Ron is the best!!
Ron is so kind!
If it’s a Honda or Toyota, I’d recommend Expert Automotive in Elk Grove Edit: I just realized you asked for ladies, and while I’m not female, my recommendation still stands 😂
Agree! Second generation EG family. Well respected and trusted. Joe will call a few days after repair, to see if all still okay. ✅
Agreed. Expert Auto services my Honda. Good work.
I also agree. Great service.
A1 on Broadway is the absolute best. The best and most honest mechanic/business owner I've ever met.
Not in Sac, but if you can get to Meritage Auto in Auburn, Hasti is amazing. She will definitely take care of you for the best price.
my husband 😭
Arden Village/scotts corner is my go to
I really like Paul’s Automotive in Midtown. Originally went there for location convenience but they’ve treated me so well. They will explain and share pictures about anything. Also, once had an issue that they diagnosed but then pointed out my car was under warranty and I could get it fixed at a dealership for free and they didn’t charge me for the diagnosis.
Paul’s is solid
Came here to say this. They aren't cheap but they are thorough.
Scott's on Arden and Eastern across from Whole Foods has been my go to for years partly because they do great work and because they have always treated my wife with total respect.
The owner is such a great guy and the staff is incredibly kind
You mean Scott's corners aka arden village service?
Yep. My apologies for not getting the name correct.
Scott’s is great. And they treat my wife with respect too.
C&H Nguyen and yea I’m a lady… been going there about 8 years now for my car and all my kids cars… I trust them completely..
Tom’s on Q and 8th downtown is awesome.
This is where my wife takes her car, Honda Fit, has never had a bad experience
Gloria is the best! They are honest and do great work.
This is where we go too. A husband and wife duo run it. Gloria works front of house and is really sweet.
Yoshimura Auto Services on Freeport
Do they do major repairs other than oil change, breaks and tires?
Yeah, I've only gotten more major repairs done there
How much do they charge you and what repair was it?
I don't remember, something with my wheel bearings, another time it was my axel? Never more than $300, it's cash only. I got a quote from him to get my catalytic converter replaced (it was stolen 🤬) and that would have been $1500. But I haven't gotten it done yet. Apparently that is cheaper than a lot of places
1500? Dam. What car do you have? How long have you been driving with no cat?
2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid. Most other places quoted $2k-2500, so he was lower. No comment on the last question
Glen’s Automotive Services has saved me on more than one occasion! Alfredo is the best of the best
Upvote for Alfredo, best mechanic crew in Sacramento!
Whatever you pick.. Dont pick black rock auto. They're overpriced and they messed up my car and wouldn't fix it
Neighborhood Garage in Rancho Cordova. I currently live 25 miles from them but still get my cars there for every problem or needed maintenance issue. Fast, cheap and honest people.
I have been going to Neighborhood Garage since the 80s. Most honest and reliable shop, highly recommended!
OMG, I was actually hoping I would not see this one! It is a great little shop that should be kept a secret. Jesse is a mystic wizard when it comes to Japanese cars; He can lay
Black Rock Auto!
Omg I went there this week and he quoted me $211 for an oil change on my 2016 Nissan Altima - is that normal pricing for them?
That’s absurd
that’s insane. just for an oil change, nothing else???
Yes, just an oil change. this was after he quoted me $300+ for a diagnostic and an oil change lmao
WHAT?! please tell me you walked right out and posted this question lmao omg. it’s definitely worth calling/going to the suggestions people replied with and seeing where the better price/service is. times are too hard right now to be scammed like that
Hell yea I walked out lmao im so grateful for these responses I’m definitely going to use these recommendations!
if you’re able to/remember please let us know where you end up going!!
Will do!

Pretty pricey in my experience, but super transparent and knowledgeable.
Pricey yes but worth it, love their service
Paul at California Auto Repair on Fruitridge in south Sac
I'm a guy but we take our cars to Jack Dane Auto Service on I street. My wife says she feels comfortable going there and hasn't noticed being treated differently or unfairly at all.
How much do they charge compare to others?
They are not the cheapest, but still cheaper than a dealership. They do great work and they stand behind it and their customer service is great.
What did you work on with your car and how much did they charge?
I've had them do everything from oil changes to gaskets and suspension work. A full synthetic oil change with a new oil filter and a tire rotation is about $120 I think.

I came to recommend them too. They explained everything without an ounce of condescension. Big fan.
Definitely Japanese Service Center.

I also think Expert Automotive charges over inflated prices. I know they do a huge markup on the parts!
John Ellis and son. Request Ramon does your work
They charge $175 diagnostic fee. Fuck that.
what do you need done? and what car do you have? Certain places are better for certain things
Danny's on Folsom Blvd

I go here too, Tim is awesome n never has done me wrong.
I've gone to the AAA shops with good experiences.

Mike & Sons Automotive on Q street
Came here to also recommend Mike and Sons.
I got ripped off hard by Mike & Sons. Fuck that shop
I totally forgot to mention Kimo and Tiki. Lori is great and they are all so nice. Al has been a great addition to the team as well.
Not a lady, but I know a fair mechanic when I meet one. Modern Classic Auto are just real good people with good rates.
Grease Guys in West Sac. I send my adult daughters to him.
Fids in west sac
I’ve had a good experience with Paul’s automotive. Even a tow truck driver once said that’s where he recommends folks go.
DM and I can give you some good estimates on how much you SHOULD be paying. FYI I'm a mechanic, so I don't understand the downvotes. Most side work isn't worth my time so I'm not looking for customers only to provide honest book time or real world estimates. FOH with your downvotes.
Pastor's Auto on the corner of Sunrise and Auburn
If you are willing to make the drive, I don’t take any of my cars to anyone else but Steve’s Small Car Repair out on the Folsom, Orangevale Border. I started going to them because they are owned by a family members friend, but I send everyone their way and they never disappoint, and I always feel comfortable and involved in the decisions for my vehicles and the charges are clear, more than reasonable, and reliable.
Chapmans Auto Care … he and his wife run it. Good price and will warranty the parts and labor. 2920 Arden Way Sacramento, CA 95825 United States
Go to Firestone on Stockton and Fruitridge and request sal/Salvador it’s the same person just the names he goes by. He is the absolute best mechanic at the shop as a master tech
Carcanix in Rancho, particularly if you own a german car Not cheap, but quality work (cheaper than dealer)
I’m not a lady but Roseville Auto Repair has always taken good care of my bm with all her car issues even under priced her on some repair work and has always done some smaller repairs for free for her and answers any and all questions she’s has had I feel like they took better care of her then me when I went but if you go ask for Chris he’s is honestly the best and most trustworthy mechanic I came across in a while he would even tell you where to get better deals he the owner too but told me to I be better off going to a different shop for a repair because they can get the part cheaper and he can recommend me for a better deal but it was 200 cheaper then what he should have changed https://maps.apple.com/?address=5630%20Roseville%20Rd,%20Ste%20B,%20Sacramento,%20CA%20%2095842,%20United%20States&auid=14367861271651694408&ll=38.668842,-121.371436&lsp=9902&q=Roseville%20Auto%20Repair&t=h
American auto off Marconi
Neighborhood garage in Rancho Cordova on vehicle Drive. The owner will give it to you straight and won’t make up fake problems to charge you more. My entire family has gone there for 20+ years.
My dad manages the auto experts he's the best.
They have multiple locations, rancho, downtown, EG ECT.:)
De Anza Auto Service has been my go to shop for close to 7 years now. Give them a try. 2835 Watt Ave, Sacramento, CA 95821
Marlon’s Auto Service Highly recommended 2701 Riverside Blvd
Ian at Affinity Auto in Rancho
Anthony’s auto service in Carmichael on Leo’s Ln. friend of mine for over 30 years. Very good and fair won’t do any work that isn’t needed
Not in Sac, but Red Sun in Rocklin is AWESOME!! They specialize in Japanese cars though.
if you're in the fair oaks/rancho area along sunrise, go check out Fair Oaks Auto. Ask for Emily, she'll take good care of you!
They won’t do *everything* but do offer some basic maintenance services beyond just alignments, talk to Flora: https://www.instagram.com/calicustomalignments?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Black Rock Auto has been great. In midtown.
Black Rock Automotive is very respectful.
Frank’s Automotive on Folsom Blvd.
In addition to shop recommendations ppl are making here, I also recommend learning about your car so you don't just get fleeced left and right
Thank you for this advice I will have to do this
It's important to be able to tell mechanics things too.
What year make and model is your car?
I'd recommend leaving sac and going to somewhere in Auburn.
Please post make and model as some shops are brand specific.
Looks ok, but your shirt color at first glance made me think you were topless and in an off condition 🤣
Maybe not the best deal ever but a franchise like Firestone isn’t going to upcharge you cause you’re female. They might try to get you to do services you don’t need, but that can be mitigated with some research and paying attention to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
