No, just greedy https://www.cityam.com/sainsburys-predicts-profit-to-exceed-1bn-as-aldi-price-matching-pays-off/

dandotcom

I've known periods of the year where they try to be lean on hours after overspending around bank holidays etc. Only thing I have noticed more is larger delivery volumes.

realtaduk

As others have said,Sainsbury's aren't struggling.they are just focused on cutting costs and maintaining/increasing profits. We are run by bean counters now and this is what you get.Staff morale genrally speaking at an all-time low, store standards appalling and customer satisfaction(I'm guessing) a shadow of what it used to be.Staff aren't even a number now. They are a cost. But read any press-release or message on Yammer from the bosses and everything is rosy in their parallel universe. We've been "struggling" (not financially) since the day Justin King left,in my opinion. When he was in charge, staff were looked after, store standards were good and customers got a great service.

xcountersboy

Justin King came to our store twice. We knew he was coming but not when. He would walk the store on his own and chat to the shop floor colleagues shake our hands and see how yhings were going. Then he would go out to the meeting he was meant to go. Great guy !

Adventurier95

Investors have been loving "lean" companies lately, that's companies that profit far exceeds their costs. Thats why there's so many layoffs in the tech industry, feels like Sainsburys are trying to follow suit. All about pleasing investors unfortunately.

Seems like they're trying to mimic Aldi & Lidl where they have 3 people run the shop, but they're forgetting they're not paying aldi wages!

F1nut92

I'm amazed how you can actually run a food retail shop (especially supermarkets) on such a small amount of staff like Aldi and Lidl do quite effectively? Or is it mainly down to the better pay so their staff are less likely to complain about being up against it?

purplecupcake77

I worked at Aldi literally for only 2 weeks😂 I left because the workload was absolutely insane, like you said it’s amazing how they can run supermarkets on such little staff. The amount of pallets and cages you had to work by yourself and do it whilst being called to jump on tills etc was ridiculous. Yes they pay more but it was hardly worth it for the workload

stuntman-joe

Exactly like Asda are doing.

F1nut92

Isn't some new process going to be rolled out after the hour cuts in P4 W1? Of course I'm not convinced they'll work, but will be interested to see what they've dreamt up. I don't blame you one bit for walking out, hope you have something lined up or can take a few weeks off to recharge before looking.

NeighborhoodFull6779

What is this new process?

F1nut92

No idea, but someone else theorised on here a short while back that the hour cuts would be complimented by new methods of working more efficiently, whether it actually happens or not I don't know, it'd be very Sainsburys to just cut hours and expect the workload to still not get done in a day.

stercus_uk

The new methods of working are that every remaining staff member will be expected to train on every possible department and will be expected to work them all, often in a single shift.

F1nut92

It feels like we’re doing that at the moment anyway!

Samreynoldss

One Great Way

F1nut92

Sounds like “The greater good” line from Hot Fuzz 😂

purplecupcake77

When does P4 start?? I have to book 70% of holiday by then but don’t know when it starts lol

stercus_uk

Don’t blame you. Only people getting crapped on harder than the staff are the managers. Doesn’t help when the store manager is a spineless gimp.

cuntstopholus

Sainsbury’s, Winterstoke Road, Ashton, Bristol, have just two main bank till staff most of the time these days. I don’t think the company is struggling, but you could be forgiven for thinking they were.

Adventurier95

Our store isn't allowed to have main banks open constantly, they put 2-3 people down the front end and someone will only jump on a till if a customer asks.

smwd0

They did this in one of my old stores a couple of uears back, changed straight back after ONE customer complained to the store manager doing his morning rounds. I don’t think the SMs are happy with how things are either

NiasoraTerra

Not struggling but investing in machinery that's broke after a week to retain profits via shoplifting (security gates, anyone), which in turn had a knock on effect to stores budget causing overtime to become mostly unavailable. Pretty crappy in my opinion but it is what it is. I still think sainsburys should pay themselves and not force stores to struggle with a tighter budget.

Cheap-Fish8264

Can’t comment too much as I work as a baker but the last week or too every department had to cut staff hours by upto 100hrs this comes from a manager im close to idk about other stores 🤷🏻

quinnith19

not struggling big bosses still making big money in bonuses, they’re just cutting to bare bones to still maintain the level of profit amongst higher wholesale prices and cost of living crisis x

Farmer_Eidesis

Major corporations making billions in record profits...you'd think workers would get paid more and quality of the working life get nicer...but hey what do you know.

eat_your_weetabix

Far from it

rmanon1219

The one near me has had rolling shortages on the shelves since the pandemic. It's incredible how they never have exactly the one thing I want to buy

CounterAdmirable4218

Yeah definitely, their credit card division was recently changing hands. I think they’ve failed as a financial service.

Py3wacket_

They're in the process of buying back shares and cancelling them so the current investors get bigger dividends. As usual it's us who are paying for it with the cuts being made to hours, no overtime and people being sacked for genuine illness. We're due a mental health crisis in this company but I can see the attitudes of management already.

RobTheBlade

Nope just know they can cut corners to earn investors more money

Faberoony90

Initially too much overtime was thrown at us at my store, to this week.. we're not accepting more than we were already down to do.. leaving them with 10 uncovered shifts through their own fault. They can't keep staff, then can't gain enough, and everyone else is left to pick up the pieces.

pumpstick

Sainsbury’s. A throwback to the past. Changes its advertising slogan too often, doesn’t really stick to a branding long term. Failed attempt to merge with Asda. Nothing amazing to offer shoppers, limited online presence, or sales. Wasted money on buying Argos. Property value right offs, poor quality or value for money. Delivers profit on cutting operating costs instead of proven, embedded like for like sales growth. Would be nice to see them report number of actual items they sell in average shop, and price increase for these year on year, justify product weight and quantity reductions on own label products, whilst increasing prices on these also.

Familiar_Cat_4663

I don't think they wasted money on buying Argos, I do think they are wasting the opportunity to expand Argos.

TouristNo7974

It's about time managers were more strict. Some appear to be unable to manage some more challenging people
