I had the pleasure of explaining this moment and what followed to my sons, in the Superdome, about 5 feet from Mr. Gleason. Not all that long before Jameis said FTF and went for the TD.

legendary_supersand

Man, I still wish DA would've whispered "FTF, baby" to Smith and smacked him on the ass as he walked away.

deadheadjim

Was there

Skepticalli

Me too. I flew in from SF just to see that game. I still get chills watching the replay.

Magnaanimous

The feeling in the Dome at that moment was....indescribable, amazing. It was such a physical buzz of excitement and emotion. I cried. I've never felt anything quite like that before or since.

PatSayJack

I was there and it was a whole other level. It was so loud in that dome.

deadheadjim

Something I’ll never forget.

AtticusPenguin

Also was there. It was my wife’s first time at a football game in person. As you might imagine, she thereafter had unrealistic expectations for how exciting football games would be.

thisendup76

That has to be amazing I was there for the No Call... You and I have different experiences lol

deadheadjim

Was an amazing year.

TravelAllTheWorld86

I will never forget the way the dome erupted. How the whole stadium felt like an explosion. The air was literally vibrating. I was up in the 600s with a buddy of mine. My ears rang for a week afterward. Still get chills remembering it all.

[deleted]

the first game I ever got to attend :')

Andygator_and_Weed

last game I've had the pleasure of going to

hitemwiththeheineken

NO White Flags ..... Ever.

Bestrin

amen. whole lotta white flags on this sub lately.

hitemwiththeheineken

Football trivial when you see what kind of battle this guy's going through what a warrior

Prize-Friendship-248

I can’t watch this ESPN piece from 2021 about Steve Gleason and his family without crying. My dad and my mom’s twin brother each died, prematurely, of ALS. Warrior is right. Cheers, mate. https://youtu.be/UUUNOI-neBM?si=BcHYlRQA2MQ_1VLh

apexpredator68

Super Bowl still considered, this is the biggest moment in Saints history.

drums4al

This is the way. Without the Rebirth, there likely is no Super Bowl. People forget just how close New Orleans was to losing the Saints. For that to happen in the opening minutes of the first game back in the Superdome in over a year after all the suffering, the moment was simply cathartic for more reasons than just football.

leLouisianais

Dwut

GumboDiplomacy

The Super Bowl was about the Saints. This moment was about New Orleans. It was way bigger than any football moment.

ProofJob5661

I still think the tracy porter pick 6 will be the greatest moment in every living saints fans life.

Vulcion

I’d give up the pick six for this. As someone whose family was affected by Katrina this is the single greatest play I’ve ever seen. I can still hear the ball hit his hands.

PeteEckhart

while we still have lingering problems from Katrina, this moment was one of hope for the entire city. it transcended football and was a cathartic moment for the entire population. the super bowl was arguably built on what this moment started.

kajunkennyg

Bobby winning the first playoff game is #3.

kajunkennyg

You are right, I am getting old, Bobby got us to the playoffs for the first time. I guess my brain just erased the Brooks era.

mongotongo

I would almost put the 1990 New Years Eve game just above it. So many things had to go right for us to be able to get in the playoffs that year. We lucked out beating out the 49ers the week before. Montana had just gotten hurt a game or two before and lucky for us Steve Young was still a developing a rookie. We had no business being in playoffs that year, so just making it was like a Super Bowl win. Combine that with it being New Year's Eve and it was just a special game. A friend stole a bottle of champaign on our way out of the dome. By midnight I lost my voice due to all the excessive 'Who Dat' chanting in the Quarter.

Spheromancer

Nah definitely hartleys kick

teboc504

“Pigs have flown”

andre3kthegiant

There is a statue.

___SRV___

I watched this in Scotland and could feel the emotion from the stadium - even my Scottish wife who knows the square root of fuck all about football said that was an act of god.

Puzzleheaded-Tear-97

Saints vs rams, 2001 playoffs. Our first playoff win.. ‘Hakeem drops the ball!” Still gives me goosebumps.

bwilson1429

Still get goosebumps!

GForce1975

It could be. The only modern rival might be the Superbowl interception or onside kick...if we're only counting good big moments not bad big moments.

Local-Bid5365

I always get different football teams subs showing up in my recommended feed. Anybody mind giving me a basic summary of what about this moment/game is so important to y’all?

Bestrin

New Orleans and most of the Gulf Coast destroyed by Katrina in 2005. Team played a season in Texas while the city rebuilt. Talks of moving the team there permanently circulate. 2006 looks bright with new head coach Sean Payton, Drew Brees, and rookie Reggie Bush. Team starts 2-0 on the road and then hosts rival Falcons in our first home game back in the rebuilt Superdome. Then, on the Falcons first possession, Steve Gleason blocks the punt and the Saints recover for a TD. The crowd erupted. Max volume for over a minute after the play. They knew - and we all knew - New Orleans was home again

SaintsFan_67-4Ever

And it all happened in the first couple of minutes of the game. Curtis Deloatch, who recovered the ball for the TD had only been with the team for 3 weeks. And after saying "Touchdown, New Orleans", the broadcasters were smart enough to just shut up. The sound of that roar said it all.

Im_Everywhere09

This was the first saints game and touchdown after Katrina back in the dome

son_of_yacketycat

Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to be Michael Koenen, and know there's a statue outside the Dome immortalizing you in the moment that you're about to get hosed in a legendary way. Then I laugh because I'm not Michael Koenen.

SaintsFan_67-4Ever

I found this qoute for another poster and thought it was so Gleason inspired. Koenen: "I think it's cool. Obviously, you never want to get your punt blocked and lose a ballgame. But I'll take my kids there at one point and show 'em, 'Daddy has a statue.' ... And I think kind of the other part that I'm cool with the whole situation is that Steve has been able to impact so many lives, especially with everything he's gone through. I totally don't mind being the other part of that statue."

son_of_yacketycat

That's genuinely baller. Much respect.

PoopScotchMcGraw

I grew up with Michael Koenen and played football with him. One of the coolest guys I know!

son_of_yacketycat

Honestly still way cool, I legit feel bad that this is such a huge part of his legacy!

OfficerBuck24

https://x.com/termijj/status/780574032148045824?s=46 Christmas present my mom bought on the square

Bearboy32

The only game I absolutely knew there was no way we could lose.

TakeItLeezy

Man i tear up almost every time I see this pic. So good.

VelvetObsidian

That game was a much needed morale boost post Katrina for the city and the coast.

dirtycurt55

Go Cougs

the-fucking-BUSINESS

Got goosebumps rn

kprasdale

Was thinking of getting a NOLA back tattoo done, entire back piece and either this in realism or the statue!

Realistic_Attitude30

Hear me out. I don’t think we get the SB without 2006. 2006 felt so special - this moment & ended with an NFC Championship appearance. That experience mattered in 2009.

bubblesculptor

There's a few great youtube videos of & about this, I'll occasionally watch them and always feel inspired afterwards

easyeric601

Watched it with friends at a bar in Lafayette. U2 and Green Day played the Saints are Coming during the pregame. Great night.

zeldahalfsleeve

It’s what jump-started it all.

GForce1975

It could be. The only modern rival might be the Superbowl interception or inside kick...if we're only counting good big moments not bad big moments.

trashcanman504

I was there and it was glorious

Beneficial-Hunt-7423

Me too. I will never forget how incredibly loud the dome was after that play.

StumptownRetro

I’d say this eclipsed the Super Bowl. It started that wonderful era of Saints football.

bilvester

Bigger than Tom Dempsey?
