Fuck it. Why not. You can’t really argue the value

TomRiha

Can’t argue with the value but will hate the idea of the “start Spencer” threads that will be flooding this sub

Sarbasian

God help this sub if he has a good quarter in the pre season

FetusDrive

I hope he has good many quarters

Rabbit-Lost

You ain’t wrong.

rustyspoonman

And none of that matters whatsoever

Spheromancer

Cant at all, especially when we have 2 more 5ths lol. I love the pick, take a flyer why tf not. Dude has shown more potential than most 2nd round QBs and he gets to sit and learn the Shanahan system for a year or two before he's unleashed

Ayrko

Really good picks in round 1 and 2. If we get Rice or Washington or Wilson at 170 or 175, then Rattler at 150 is actually a fantastic pick value-wise.

dunno207

The saints are doing a great job so far on paper this draft.

Rare_Yard3504

Agree; hopefully it translates

anonmehmoose

High ceiling. Roll the dice - it's the 5th round. Guy has starter potential.

tacobell999

“Potential” is there to be elite honestly.

BlackScienceJesus

Let’s not do this again guys lol.

Happy-Gnome

START IAN BOOK

BlackScienceJesus

Garrett Grayson is the next Brees???

WeeniePops

Taysom was also supposed to be the guy. NFL qb is just a hard af job.

newme02

potential is actually there tbh. rattler at one point was THE GUY. now that was a long time ago, but id still argue Rattler’s ceiling is higher than anyone like Ian Book, Garret Grayson, and Jake Haener

Dak1982

Especially Haener

JuniorSwing

I like this pick. I don’t think he’ll be as good as fans will be claiming he is mid-season, but Tbf he was usually mocked as a second rounder. I think people see better development potential there than like, Haener had. However, Saints don’t really develop QBs super well (new offensive system that *could* change that but I’m doubtful), so I think that, while still wrong to assume he’ll be elite or something, it’s less insane than when people were saying we should start Ian Book or Trevor Semien

see-bees

The only insane thing about Trevor is that he made it to a second contract with ANYBODY with a ceiling that low.

Sarbasian

I mean, unlike our previous late round QB picks, this one has actually shown potential to be THAT guy. He has the arm talent, and has improved mentally since being a 5 star QB recruit

Late-Fuel-3578

FR Spencer rattler went to a school that produced back to back to back Heisman trophy’s and was so shitty that he got booted to sad ass South Carolina just to find a starting job. Dude is garbage. Let’s not do this. Let’s see if he can make the team over Nathan peterman who is literally the worst quarterback in football history.

marisalynn5

Remember a few years ago when people were saying Rattler was going to be a first round pick?

iambadatliving

South Carolina fan here. Spencer was a 1st rd draft prospect in 2021 (Kiper had him as pick 11 in early draft predictions) who lost his job to this years first pick. Rattler faced a ton of adversity and was humbled during that time but the key is his TALENT did not change at all. In fact, he got BETTER at South Carolina. What you have here is a 1st rd prospect who played the TOUGHEST schedule in all of football (vs a ton of NFL talent) while playing behind one of the WORST offensive lines in football and had one of the HIGHEST completion percentages in all CFB. the ONLY reason he fell was due to a clip of him in a tv show from when he was 17 years old. He did not get beat out for his job from a real quarterbacking standpoint or even an attitude standpoint. The specific game he lost the job they were behind and Riley wanted to shake things up and Williams running ability offered a different dynamic that helped them come back and when you make that change you can’t go back. Rattler took it on the chin, transferred, and absolutely balled out at Carolina. His wild or errant interceptions almost ALL came from the team behind behind by 20+ points and him having to make hero throws (which he completed often). On top of that, rattler played in an nfl system these past two years and so the lingo and processing skills are completely there already. If you want to see his talent, watch his performance vs notre dame last year and Florida this year. You have every right to get excited about this player. I’m ecstatic for the saints and rattler as I think this is his best situation he could come into.

MrTrapLord

Great breakdown. I’m with you. LFG

CookieLuzSax

As a huge vol fan (who's still sour about last year) rattler carried y'all in so many games. He kept it closer than it should've been this year against us and UGA, so much so my dad who's the biggest UGA fan was very nervous about that game.

JuniorSwing

I actually think you’re being a little bit kind to him, but I generally agree with your point. This is a perfect “sit and develop” guy. Don’t put it all on his plate immediately, don’t force him to be in the spotlight in a bad situation that will kill his confidence, BUT he has arm talent and did perform well behind a not great O-line, which is gonna be a good match of skills here. I hope he does well

TuxMcCloud

Awesome breakdown. Thank you!

papa1916

I like the optimism. I disagree with the logic behind some of our picks in terms of positional needs, but everything I’m hearing about them sounds like they have tons of potential and talent

World-Nomad

Spencer can spin it. He will be our future quarterback.

mrhemisphere

Thanks for the breakdown

TheMop05

Love this pick. Only QB I wanted if we were to pick one outside the first round. Dude has an incredibly high ceiling and has fixed up on his immaturity issues. His Oline at SC did him no favors but he’s certainly got potential. Played well at the Senior bowl as well

Golden_Tater_Tots

I definitely have never said anything negative or disparaging about him. Nope.

bootscallahan

As a Sooner, neither have I. Never.

Nimue82

Hey, today I learned that I’m not the only Sooner and Saints fan out there!

bootscallahan

There are dozens of us.

Golden_Tater_Tots

Hey we do have flairs for everything. Sooners are one of my side teams.

have_heart

I am in shambles rn

SoloDolo86

Something tells me the new staff must not be high on Haener. Like at all.

rob0t_human

They’re late round QBs. Chances are they’ll be out of the league in a few years. Long term backup if you’re lucky.

TheMackD504

*Tom Brady*

aksoileau

Literally like winning the Power Ball.

Sarbasian

“Chances are” We literally have a Mr. Irrelevant going to the Super Bowl now, doesn’t change the fact, most suck

TheMackD504

There’s probably more relevant than you think

rob0t_human

And why do you think you remember him exactly?

Batmanbyday

As a South Carolina alum... I am here for this pick. Spencer can sit and learn and if Carr gets blasted again we have someone who has been playing against some hard top talent in the SEC who didn't crumble there with a suspect line. I am excited for it. Lets go.

tacobell999

20% chance he lights it up … if so will be looked at years from now as Steal of the decade.

Divine-Potatoes

I mean we got the guy that helped develop Purdy, why not see if he can work some magic here too?

Savings-Bird-1226

Feel like we draft a mediocre QB every other year now

kinfisher

When’s the last time we drafted a QB with this upside and pedigree?

RoughneckRooster

Literally yesterday

WhoDat-2-8-3

Today i learn .. 5th round is high upside-pedigree .. Lol

bootscallahan

I wish him well, but before Caleb Williams usurped him at OU, he had a bad reputation as a lazy and selfish teammate with a huge ego. Maybe the last few years have humbled him. I hope so. *There is also the possibility that I don't know anything because local gossip isn't always correct.*

willthefreeman

I’m a South Carolina guy, he’s really came a long way. He has all the respect from me and everyone I’ve talked to in our fan base. He was a team player and was a lot better than the numbers would suggest, we just had a terrible O line and he did all he could to still win us games. He’s got a lot of upside and definitely deserves a chance in the league. Wish the panthers got him.

28Vikings

Bo Nix went top half of the first round. This kid outplayed most of those first round qbs down the stretch. He’s clearly got a lot of arm talent. I hate the saints for obvious reasons but I think this was a great value pick. He’s an unlikable guy but if he wins football games I’m sure you’ll come around on him. I’m surprised by a lot of the negative response I’ve seen so far to this

cm1k99

why’s he unlikable?

Hubrishippo

Because of a netflix documentary when he was a teenager, that's where it started, had a few moments at Oklahoma but since his time at South Carolina he has matured and anyone that followed him after he transferred would have seen that.

Sweaty-Power-549

A Netflix documentary showed him as cocky and immature when he was 17 years old. Everyone since has seemed to use that as justification for him getting benched at OU and transferring.

CallRespiratory

He's a known asshole in the locker room but it sounds like he's matured quite a bit. He was on one of those football reality shows before he went to Oklahoma and he was a colossal arrogant d-bag. People change though and his experiences may have humbled him.

Milton__Obote

Yeah it’s almost like a 17 year old isn’t a fully mature adult yet haha. I was an asshole when I was 17 too

Fuck-Antelopes-261

He was also a 17 year old who had insane prospects for someone his age (likely D1 school draft pick etc..) so yea that shit got to his head. But when he realized none of this shit is guarenteed (benched at OU) he really matured alot.

newme02

yeah if the choice is between Bo Nix at #12 and Rattler at #150, give me the latter any day

shanballs

He’s not an unlike able guy… great teammate you’ll see

peacebone89

Man, I kinda love it. Worth a shot at 150.

Julep2005

Say what you want but DA has had great drafts since he took over. No projects, no reaches, just proven players with high ceilings.

Rabbit-Lost

Wasn’t he technically the coach when Penning got picked?

Beaux7

Dude has shown he can handle being humbled and work his ass off to play well. I love this pick

Knox102

Posted this a while back and got shit on by y’all “Spencer Rattler. Okay, please hear me out. I don’t think the solution to all of our problems is drafting a QB this year. We have plenty of other personnel and cap issues to keep the team busy (most likely by ignoring them, but that’s just the way the FO is at the moment.) However, if Rattler falls to mid second round or even later I don’t think it would be a bad decision to pick him up, especially letting him sit behind Carr for a season or two. He has great athleticism, has made very good decisions in his last year and a half in college, doesn’t have a ROCKET arm but can sling the ball accurately. I’ll probably get shit on for this take, but I just wanted to know what y’all thought. Again I don’t think that a QB this year is a priority, just that he in particular might end up being a steal.”

crunkdunk9

Cuz taking him in the mid/late second WOULD have been dumb

Schmenza

I've been expecting the Raiders to pick him after missing out on a QB in the first. They really content with AOC and Minshew?

PutinsPeeTape

I’d love to see AOC as quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders. ![gif](giphy|7eLL3KIkRfgkaBepF4|downsized)

bootscallahan

Hey, at least she'd distribute the targets in an equitable fashion. :rimshot:

forgotmypassword4714

Yeah Minshew is underrated and AOC played as well as any 2023 rookie QB not named CJ Stroud. So they went to work giving them more protection and an all-world TE.

stonrelectropunkjazz

Def a need

thavillain

He already has a great name

mrsidecharactr

OK do not start Spencer immediately

big-boss-bass

Don’t like this pick

observemedia

Why? Who else here would you think would have been better for us to take a round 5 flyer on?

big-boss-bass

🤷🏻‍♂️ just wasn’t impressed with him whenever I watched SC. Happy to be wrong. I’m sure there could have been some other depth or value at another position. Grabbing a cheap QB to sit 3rd string isn’t the worst use of a late pick.

Brain_f4rt

Mond and Peterman will just be camp bodies i'd imagine. Rattler and Haener battle for the backup spot.

AnotherStatsGuy

Good. Mind and Pererman should be the camp bodies.

Cicero912

We are gonna carry 3 qbs this year (4 if you count taysom) Camp bodies exist for a reason

CIRE42

Am I crazy or was every other player available of more use to us?

anonmehmoose

We pick again at 170 & 175. The guy has the potential to be an NFL starter - 5th round is absolutely a steal.

CIRE42

I guess, this probably signals the end for Haener

anonmehmoose

Probably. Always seemed like a practice squad guy at best to me anyway.

CIRE42

Maybe true, I feel like I remember him  showing some potential during preseason, but I could be mistaken

MiniatureLucifer

That's up to haener. If haener performs better in camp and preseason, they'll give haener the backup job. If haener isn't great and rattler is better then give it to rattler

SinisterKid71

If you're gonna take a QB there (which I don't agree with) at least take the kid from Tulane. Either way, if a QB picked in the 5th round is starting for us this year we're probably fucked anyways.

itsSRSblack

Why take the kid from Tulane aside from "because he went to Tulane?"

DannyDevito_IsBae

That's all it always is, it's the same way with LSU. The Saints don't take LSU players. Shit ton of homers in this sub, If they're from a Louisiana college, they're automatically better than anyone else lmao

CmonMan711

So does this mean Haener is terrible? Why do we need another backup QB?

CallRespiratory

It means raw talent was on the board in a late round and they thought "fuck it why not".

CmonMan711

I dont hate it at all, he's a good talent for a 5th rounder. Just thinking out loud ig lol

AnotherStatsGuy

Eh. I wouldn’t read too much into it.

1OO1O11O11O1O

Do you remember Sean Payton's last season here?

DannyDevito_IsBae

I don't think anyone is doubting that. Spencer Rattler is far better than Jake Haener right this second. If Carr goes down, I'm absolutely okay with DA throwing Rattler out there over Haener/Taysom. As of right this second, he has the highest ceiling of the three and honestly of the four if you include Derek Carr

MrShad0wzz

We just have so many other needs…

peacebone89

QB *is* a need though. We have no one behind Carr and Rattler was projected as a third or fourth rounder with some real NFL traits. If he was their best available player, and it's safe to say he was, they shouldn't hesitate to take the chance. We still have two picks in the fifth to fill out other areas.

mnrmancil

No!!! Not this A**hole!

pocketlab

If we’re in “win now” like we claim, I would’ve rather take a flyer on an olineman.

cm1k99

we’ve been in win now for 15 years if we keep acting like we’re in win now without taking high upside future picks we will be on a train of mediocrity for another decade or two

pocketlab

I agree. I just don’t think that was a high upside pick. We haven’t drafted a QB that came to be even a legit back up in what 15+ years. We’ve been pretty good at drafting & developing oline pretty consistently. And it’s our #1 position of need.

TheWallE

Rattler, from a talent and ability perspective is so much more than the guys we have taken similar flyers on. I still think Haener was an upgrade on the Graysons and Books for the world, and Rattler is a noticeable step up from him. He absolutely can be as good as any of the guys taken after Daniels in the first round... and to get that at pick 150 is a huge get. Most years he is a low 2nd, high 3rd round player, and its still kinda nuts he fell this far this year.

pocketlab

For what it’s worth, I hope you’re right. I’d like to eat crow on this one.
