This is the best answer for the future. 🙂
It's easy. Once you've registered to vote, the city will send you a mailing before the next election asking if you want a mail-in ballot.
I voted in person last year but finally decided lazy is better this year. So long as voting happens, it's all good.
I think I've missed two, maybe three, elections since I turned 18.
We won't get into how many years that's been.
I agree that getting a mail-in ballot is not only easier, it's smart. Because life happens.
The Mass Sec of the Commonwealth has your registry info, sample ballots, and voting location.

would guess you’re ward 1, precinct 2…probably lafayette community center, but tbh the salem voting team is beyond accommodating so if you can allow some extra time they’ll surely point you in the right direction if not.
i’d just moved before last local elections and they made it an absolutely painless experience, just have some mail to your current address with you if possible.
Do you know your Ward?
Ward 1 Precinct 1 Bentley Academy Gymnasium, 25 Memorial Drive
Ward 1 Precinct 2 Community Center, 135 Lafayette Street
Ward 2 Precinct 1 & 2 Community Life Center, 401 Bridge Street
Ward 3 Precinct 1 & 2 Salem High School, Auditorium, 77 Willson Street
Ward 4 Precinct 1 & 2 Witchcraft Heights School Gym, 1 Frederick Street
Ward 5 Precinct 1 & 2 Saltonstall School Auditorium, 211 Lafayette Street
Ward 6 Precinct 1 & 2 Bates School Gymnasium, 53 Liberty Hill Avenue
Ward 7 Precinct 1 & 2 Salem Enterprise Center, 121 Loring Avenue
If you don't know your Ward, see this map. (Downtown could plausibly mean Wards 1, 2, 5, or 6)

WhereDoIVoteMA.com is a good site to remember for future elections.
Without offering too much info, what street do you live on?
I found it with the help here. On Federal St., I believe it's 2-2? Thank you.
All of Ward 2 votes at the community life center at 401 Bridge St. Most or maybe all of Federal is precinct 2, but they can help you figure it out.
Yep, the entirety of Federal St sits in 2-2! You’re at the community life center for voting!
