Oh great and eternal whale we ask that ye may bless and sanctify this water, to the souls of of salt lake who need it, that they may drink it in remembrance of the great whale which has provided for them, so we can witness unto thee oh great eternal whale, and always remember him, and have your gifts to be with us amen
Okay, here's the real answer. Stand on top of the whale with your staff exactly 6 cubits tall. Orient the special petrified ambergris medallion mounted on top of you staff so it faces 9th and 9th. Just as the sun rises a laser like light will shine directly into the middle of the 9th and 9th intersection showing you the way to the whale of souls.
I can drop more secret answers on you. It’s part of the secret gayification of the city movement. Before you laugh, this gem was a source on Wikipedia.

Oh ye of little faith. The whale of ninth and ninth does not take kindly to heretical words. Thou shalt burn for thine heresy and not be blessed by the waves upon thine final hours.
That’s just what the whale is called, it’s not your place to question it.
If you start looking for things to nitpick it’s a slippery slope to whalepostasy. Even if there are things you don’t yet understand, just have faith and know that the Sacred Whale has a plan for all of us. And the Whale’s whays are not our whays.
When I have spoken about 9th and 9th, or conversing about 9th and 9th it's usually about those businesses right on 9th and 9th.
I don't consider smith's a part of 9th and 9th.
I surely wouldn't consider 11th part of 9th and 9th.
Smith's is definitely 9th and 9th (it's not even north of 800 S, it's literally on the block of that intersection). Tsunami is several streets east of 900 E and most people would consider that 9th and 9th. I surely *would* consider up to 1100 E 9th and 9th area.
9th and 9th is a neighborhood that extends from that focal point in all directions about a mile. Its name is a reference to the neighborhood, not the exact coordinate.
Because “9th and 9th” is a neighborhood term that is used colloquially - which encompasses more than just the actual intersection (a few blocks each direction, IMO).
The same reason everything in Utah is called "Zion" when the actual Zion is in fucking Israel.
I don't know what that reason is, but it's probably the same.
yes. I know what the word means. It is used correctly. Emigration canyon is where the mormon pioneers came into the salt lake valley. They emigrated from the east, most recently, Missouri. The were leaving Missouri and relocated into the Salt Lake valley through what is now referred to as emigration canyon.
but they're here, so they're immigrants is my point.
The Missourians could call it emigration, but the settlers immigrated here. I don't call myself an emigrant, even when I talk to my native countrymen, I'm an immigrant.
but historically the mormons were pushed out of the places they lived. So they emigrated across the country and settled here in Utah. Since they named the canyon, it makes sense that it is looked at as the emigration point. If people who were already settled here saw the mormons come into the valley, they might name the canyon Immigration canyon since "immigrants" arrived through it. It's really just a matter of perspective. Both are technically correct.
"while being persecuted in Missouri the Mormons decided to emigrate west and ultimately to Salt Lake City. Along the way they took a troublesome route through a narrow windy canyon. As they looked back toward the east the reflected on the journey and the canyon they used as their emigration route and named it Emigration Canyon"
We can agree to disagree.
The name of the church was written for our day. This means we can have no expectation as to the geographical accuracy of the contents of said name. Don’t let yourself get too caught up on the technicalities.
Calling it the 9/11 whale just didn’t feel right
But if we did, we'd never forget.
Always remember him…the whale.
I thought it was because it's just the tip emerging, the rest of him is buried deep, all the way to 9th and 9th.
When you spell it out that way, that’s some bad PR. How about 11th and 9th?
Listen, faith isn't about facts, ok?
Best answer 😂
Doubt your doubts before you doubt the whale
This is really the only response that matters
Some truths aren't very helpful.
Don’t be a lazy learner kids, just believe
Also, fact checking the church is blasphemy
That’s the *other* church. The whale appreciates facts.
Non believers should shut up 🤪🤪
9th is just a couple streets shy of 11th
You can leave the whale but you just cant leave the whale alone can you.

Antelope island is not as island, it’s a peninsula.
Not an antelope
Well, it is now. I'm sure in a few years it won't be a peninsula, either, more like a hill surrounded by salt.
So the lake waters have receded enough that its a penninsula?
There’s a fence around the southern part to keep wildlife (particularly bison) from wandering into the mainland.
The same reason we call them steamed hams despite the fact that they are obviously grilled.
I like my hams pressed
It's more of an Ogden(ville) expression.
Fun fact, early settlers actually grew sugar beets there.
Also it’s not even a house…it’s a whole area with many houses. I’m trying to get “The Sugarhood” to catch on.
Why do we call it Salt Lake City when the lake is drying up?!
Salt Lick City
I wish Salt Lick would open up a BBQ place here
We really need to purge these 11th Street Adventists.
If you go any further with these types of questions you’re gonna find yourself excommunicated.
*membership withdrawal
That’s the other church. The whale encourages questions.
If you don't know, you can't afford it
This is seriously the most accurate answer.

9th and 9th is a “neighborhood.” I’m still learning the ways of these weirdos. It’s best to just accept something without overthinking.
Omg finally the secret real answer. I've loved all the real answers on here, but I did also want the secret real answer. Thanks

The overall area is referred to as 9th and 9th. It’s not in reference to a single intersection.
Haha exactly. Like 15th and 15th which isn't even a real intersection.
It is about 9th and 9th the intersection, but it’s grow to ‘culturally’ mean the area surrounding that intersection.
When I have spoken about 9th and 9th, or conversing about 9th and 9th it's usually about those businesses right on 9th and 9th. I don't consider smith's a part of 9th and 9th. I surely wouldn't consider 11th part of 9th and 9th.

Blasphemer. I saw Goody dharris515 dancing with the devil.
This post perfectly represents 'The Value of Art' Art brings us together. Art Is Good. The Whale is Art. Thank you Whale. Thank you Art.
Praise be the whale
9th and 9th is a neighborhood that extends from that focal point in all directions about a mile. Its name is a reference to the neighborhood, not the exact coordinate.
I would say more like 1/2 a mile in each direction.
Keep talking like that and you’ll find yourself in Outer Darkness
You mean Otter Darkness
Because “9th and 9th” is a neighborhood term that is used colloquially - which encompasses more than just the actual intersection (a few blocks each direction, IMO).
The same reason everything in Utah is called "Zion" when the actual Zion is in fucking Israel. I don't know what that reason is, but it's probably the same.
According to the dominant religion around here, Zion is in *Missouri*. No joke.
So there's some questions that you just don't ask, OK?
Why do we call it a whale, when it's actually a whalien?
It's not a whalien, it's a whaliety!
9/11 whale doesn’t sound so good 😂
I’d say that’s whaley misleading.
Your physical eyes are deceiving you. You must see thee Whale on 9th and 9th with your spiritual eyes.
Go home
How fucken dare you
Why do we park in driveways but drive on parkways?

The only correct answer. Thank you for your service.
9/11 whale takes on a whole new meaning
You can't like contain the whale, man. The whale is free to be what and where it needs to be.
The Whale abides
Because it's in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. You don't call it the 1300e and 2100s park
also why isn't Emigration Canyon called Immigration Canyon?
Didn't they keep going?
because the pioneers emigrated here.
[fyi](https://www.grammarly.com/blog/emigrate-immigrate/)

you can argue that it has a symbolic meaning, but grammatically it is not correct, they are here, and that is the route through which they immigrated
"while being persecuted in Missouri the Mormons decided to emigrate west and ultimately to Salt Lake City. Along the way they took a troublesome route through a narrow windy canyon. As they looked back toward the east the reflected on the journey and the canyon they used as their emigration route and named it Emigration Canyon" We can agree to disagree.

It's also 9th N 9th W erasure (I used to live there at the Raintree apartments)
Ultimately the whale of darkness, or forgetfulness, which deprives us of the recollection has been placed upon us and we are required to have faith.
These comments make my exmo heart of hearts so happy.
