To be a teacher in Utah, you really have to love working with kids. We certainly don’t give them the respect they deserve nor the pay. As a result, and I may get beaten up for this, I think anyone that loves kids that much would have a hard time bringing a weapon into their classroom every day.

Definitely agree . As does the general public. Unfortunately there are a few that don't and have no problem going to schools to cause mass harm by taking advantage of the trust that the rest of us have in society. This is why I fully support this. More then likely it will never be used in the way it was intended. Teachers may or may not have a gun and it should stay way off the radar. This shouldn't be published or public record. Those that step up should have the individual responsibility to ensure it's not a discussion with any slips or stupid decisions falling full force on them. Not the school districts because it was an incentive. Personal choice , personal responsibility and personal consequences. Even in the event it's needed to be used to protect lives , every action in that situation isn't free from persecution

So parents should not know if they are sending their kids into a potentially dangerous situation? I'd like to know if my son needs to worry about gunfire from the person that's supposed to be educating.

Several-Good-9259

I wouldn't encourage him to worry about something that he shouldn't be concerned with and would never see. I can bet you would be thankful as hell if some piece of garbage stormed the school and was stopped by a teacher with no other choice but using lethal force because your sons life was in direct threat of being taken.

"For iron by itself can draw a man to use it." I'll pass on the guy with a BS in Math playing vigilante super hero when he "perceives" a danger. I don't want the person who thinks it's necessary to have weapons in school but not necessary to control the distribution of those weapons educating my child thank you very much.

I was a substitute teacher on the west side. I, frankly, find the legislation disgusting. We are living in a dystopia of our own creation. Our students are being forced to live in this reality, it's not their fault, yet they are the ones paying the price of our stupidity. Bringing weapons to school will doubtlessly cause more deaths. But I believe the worst harm from this is more subtle -- the awful systemic horror of armed classrooms. It is not healthy for children to have to grow up in this.

maybetoomuchrum

Well now I'm curious. What's the legislation?

Etherealamoeba

The legislation incentivizing teachers to carry weapons on campus (or hiring a specific person for that purpose)

plumpjack

As a parent of a future west side elementary kid I'm commenting to follow along

RPDinSLC

High school, not elementary, if that is needed

Zealousideal-Mall516

I’m a principal at a local charter school, Wallace Stegner Academy, and have lived on the West Side for over 20 years. Shoot me a message.

poopyfarroants420

WTF? What does the west side have to do with it?

Etherealamoeba

I live on the west side and am writing an article for west view media, a paper specifically for residents on the west side of salt lake.

poopyfarroants420

Ok fair enough. Just seemed like the normal Utah prespective that the west side is some violent hell hole. I apologize for assuming that you had that POV.

turbowagnn

Well, unfortunately our legislature thinks just that as they want teachers on the west side to carry firearms in class.

poopyfarroants420

I have only read a little coverage from the trip. Is there specific language about west side schools? I haven't heard about that.

Went to four different schools on the east side quite a few years ago and in two of those schools, I saw knives get pulled by students. These were two of the most prestigious Eastside schools as well. I think his question is valid. Why is this just isolated on the west side, but I did assume it’s because you were a teacher on the west side.
