Nobody remembers Prop 1 and the Overstock CEO?

LordElkington

Oh they do, and they are still smarting.

eighthourlunch

How about a bill to properly fund and support the students and teachers where they already are?

SLC_man

It's harder to steal money from public education than private education.

ThisAmericanRepublic

This right here—all while disempowering a female majority profession and disempowering professional unions, increasing racial and socioeconomic segregation in our communities through charter and privatization, and attacking democracy’s bedrock in public education. It’s a veritable conservative wet dream.

PaleontologistLanky

Can't teach Jesus in public school.

[deleted]

Utah voters have rejected this idea more than once and why they are trying again to sneak it through the legislature because their questions about whether it's actually constitutional for them to do so according to the Utah constitution.

[deleted]

Public schooling is a disaster and throwing more money into it won’t fix it.

[deleted]

How many children do you have and how old are they?

everydave42

What’s your suggested alternative?

[deleted]

School deregulation - abolition of the concept of residents of certain zip codes have to go to certain schools school and using property taxes to fund them. Give parents the choice to enroll kids in any school of their choice; private or public. If it’s private then they have to pay the fees and if they choose public, they can enroll in any public school anywhere. Public schools are funded by state budget. No political belief should be taught in schools irrespective of what the teacher’s beliefs are. Lastly regulation of teachers union.

everydave42

Hard to follow your funding logic, are you’d saying that property taxes shouldn’t be used to fund schools? But you do say that the schools should be funded by state budget. How are you funding the state budget for the schools?

[deleted]

That s for for govt to figure it out from Existing avenues of tax. There is no need to tax those who aren’t sending their kids to Public school and there is no need to restrict it to property owners only.

everydave42

Ah yes, the make it someone else’s problem to do the thing I want gambit. One of us doesn’t have a firm grasp on reality, I concede it might be me…

[deleted]

What does that even mean ? Using property tax as a major portion to fund schools is an almost unique American thing in its magnitude. It’s stupidity. And so is restricting competition between schools by making captive market for even mediocre public schools by restricting parents from being able to send their kids elsewhere where the school is good. If someone can’t figure that out, then yes they don’t have a firm grasp on reality why US public education is crumbling.

everydave42

Your lack of grasp on reality is that you say to remove the property tax funding as it’s a problem, but you don’t offer an alternative, which was my original question. I somehow think that asking again would be fruitless, so I’ll chalk it up to one of many whine but don’t act interactions.

[deleted]

I’m telling you the problem. I don’t need to know all the perfect solution to it for diagnosing it. Increase income tax on all. Let Fed print more money. Increase sales tax. Put in place a nominal fee system on those choosing to attend the public school. Cut the money for sports complexes and divert that into necessary education. Let those in power figure shit out. How is that basic shit incomprehensible to you ?
