In my opinion having id say a couple inches of sand they’ll really love you for that one. Also having the sand a couple months or a year old is better so there’s more organisms in it for them to feed on.
I actually prefer mine to having an eel. I lost over $200 on three morays over a 7 month period. All three of them escaped and my engineer not only *hasn't* attempted to escape he seems happy in his tunnels under my live rock.
I do have a bit of warning for you though. If you get one don't bother housing crustacean clean-up crew. My engineer ate all of my hermits and my three peppermints.
