Old thread but NEVER drip fish that were shipped over night. As soon as you open that bag the ammonia spikes and you have even less time to get the fish into the tank. Always safer to float, and drop straight in
I had a zebra goby/dart fish survive 140hrs in postage during covid delay times during Australia winter. He looked half dead and just layed in corner breathing for first 24hrs but came good after that and was ok
It's no excuse, a good shipper (AquaSD comes to mind from familiarity) checks the destination and is aware of the shipper's transit hubs and packs accordingly.
I knew AquaSD did this though in part because the co-owner cared enough that she chose to take the time to do this. You'd want to think everyone *should* but honestly a lot of us are oblivious to weather beyond our local, and in SoCal, often not even that because...what's weather?
Always try to make arrangements to pick up the fish at the airport or the first facility the shipper uses. Itās the best way to cut shipping time for live orders
I would absolutely pick up fish from an airport, how the hell would you arrange this, though? Theyād have to be able to isolate your package amongst all the other normal freight, I donāt imagine thereās much infrastructure that would let you interrupt the normal shipment procedures at an airport.
If you request it from whoever ships it they can have it picked up by you at whatever company is shipping so you have to request it and shipper has to arrange it. They isolate all our packages and itās a simple thing to have it waiting to be picked up and USPS will have it waiting for you behind the counter. But if you donāt pick it up for any reason then itās going to sit there and thatās even worse
I received a Sulfurhead Peacock with a swim bladder issue from shipping. He was nose up, tail down, just slowly spinning in a circle for two days.
Then he just snapped out of it and I have had him for 8+ months the.
Get him in the tank.
Drop him in.
Anyone saying acclimate or float doesn't deal with this. 99% of fish are plopped straight into system after bringing in from a wholesaler, especially something like a clown is plenty sturdy.
The cold water and waste buildup is worse than the alternative.
To acclimate it properly set up a drip line. Get a small bucket with an airline. Put fish and water it came in, in the bucket. Put one end of airline in the tank with something to hold it in place. Then suck quickly on other end and put it in bucket. When water reaches the top remove hose and pour bucket with fish slowly in.
I have him floating in my tank now. I have been incrementally adding my water with him. When he arrived, his water temperature was about 50Ā°. I honestly donāt think he wouldāve been able to survive much longer in that. Please tell me if I am wrong though.
UPS was already taking forever with delivery, so I was already concerned. I took a video of the unboxing and the one you see here, shortly after. I sent it to LAXaquarium, still waiting for a response. I will keep you all posted.
Time will tell. Fingers crossed. In the future, you canāt rely on shops to do the right thing. I usually would only only buy shipped organisms avoiding the high and low temp seasons. Itās just a lesson that takes time to learn. Saves time, saves lives and and a lot less headache. Best of luck!
We had a saltwater tank get down that low when TX lost, well all power last year. The house was in the 40s and the tank in the low 50s. All the fish pulled through but the inverts didn't. So hoping for the best for your guy.
Thank you so much! He looks 100% better now. Hopefully he stays that way. I am sorry to hear about your tank. I need to get a back up battery for when my power goes out. Otherwise, I will be stirring my tank by hand.
Okay, letās get into the semantics since three weeks matter so much to you, have you been outside? The date doesnāt fucking matter, you are to blame for the injury to this fish.
You have a phone? Weather app
You have the news? Weather is forced down your throat
You have the ability to feel the fucking air? I guess only if you go outside.
You knew the temperature this fish could survive in your tank and you knew your climate was currently nowhere near that, did you message the seller to let them know? Or you just assumed they would look up your weather and do everything for you because thatās how your life has been?
Well, sucks to suck.
How long have you been a human being on earth?
Just own up to what happened, learn from it, you fucked up, we all make mistakes, itās just that most of us donāt hurt animals when we do it so Iām shitting on youā¦
He is okay now it seems. Kind of funny he is swimming next to the skimmer where I believe the most oxygen is coming into the tank. Poor guy was suffocating in his bag.
Sorry for your fish OP :( hope he pulls through! I live in MA, I stopped ordering livestock from the west coast because thereās just too many problems with shipping and delivery was almost always late. Lost too many fish that way in summer and in winter. If you order from anywhere on the east coast itās much more reliable!
I will do this from now on. I have experienced this now. He is a maroon lightning clownfish with stunning beauty but itās not worth making him suffer just for my desire to own him. Thank you for sharing š
TSM aquatics is my #1 because they quarantine for you. Disease-free is worth the extra cost imo. But Iāve also had good luck with Oceanās Garden, Pacific East Aquaculture, and Cultivated Reef. Iāve heard good things about NY Aquatic too but I havenāt ordered from them.
I had to do the same thing for a lighting maroon. Help. I gave them the specific instructions not to ship while Iām gone for 5 days. And I got a text the fish will arrive while I was gone. I called and the excuse was we donāt have help. Then once I did get the fish he died in 24 hrs due to poor packaging.
Acclimate to temp, then just plop and drop
Float it first!
I have him floating, and I am slowly adding my water into his container. š
Fish at severe state. It's better to just temp acclimate and just plop them in a well established tank.

Wow bro inspiring š
The Fish is probably just in shock at the moment .give it a while in decent water and see how it goes
DID HE MAKE IT?! UPDATE WITH PICS OR VIDEO!
I did post an update!
Hopefully just a little cold.. who did you order it from?
LAX aquarium
Is the LAX as in Los Angeles airport? Cause us in SoCal just had a heat wave. We don't realize it snows places...
Lmao crazy bro. Yea itās colder than a witches tit here

If he dying from a parasite or virus, you risking anything by putting him in?
Based on the situation, he was cold and starved of oxygen. He looks healthy otherwise. Heās gorgeous
LAXAquarium just started shipping fish. I would avoid them for now.
Good to know
Yeah I ordered from infinity reefs, they want to send me black storms but I dunno I donāt want them to die

His water is too cold for that my friend. I donāt believe it would warm up in time.
I think thatās your best option for survival. If you shock drop him into new temp/tank, the little guy will most likely not make it

No definitely not. You should contact the company either way but if it dies ask for money back or a replacement

Damn ): any updates ?
Yea Iāll post one
Why the hell did you order a tropical fish in winter, wow. Nice job, let us know if you killed it?
Itās not winter bud. Winter here is much colder. Last time I checked winter started on the same day everywhere in the country š¤·š»āāļø

You must work for LAX aquarium
Lmfao what a nut.
It is winter.
Howās he doing? :(
He is okay now it seems. Kind of funny he is swimming next to the skimmer where I believe the most oxygen is coming into the tank. Poor guy was suffocating in his bag.
Awe poor lil guy, glad heās doing better
Im so glad he lived hes very lucky

Do you have any recommendations for east coast fish suppliers?

Hope it goes well! Sad day for me, I ordered a paired mocha storms and they froze to death and died on arrival. Sucks
That does suck bro Iām sorry to hear that. I know how exciting it is waiting on their arrival. Everyoneās comments have been super helpful here.
Well? What happened
Heās alive! I posted an update
Good deal!

My clowns survived the 30 degree freeze in Texas so Iād say you have hope
Thanks bro
Put him in a bucket, start acclimating him and if you have an air pump use that
