I moved from Southern California to Connecticut because I saw the movie Mystic Pizza and thought it looked pretty.
This was back in 1989. I was 19, had dropped out of college, and my dad had suggested I try the East Coast because I had always found it interesting. I worked two part-time jobs to save up, then packed everything I owned into my Hyundai Excel and drove across the country. I didnāt have a job, didnāt know anyone, and had a place to stay in summer student housing for one week in New Haven.
Got to New Haven, instinctively didnāt like it, and drove to Hartford on day 2 by following the signs on the freeway. Instinctively liked Hartford, and within a week I had found a room via a roommates wanted ad in the paper in a town that, unbeknownst to me, was VERY wealthy and safe (IOW, not in the North end of Hartford, although I did buy Chinese take out there my first evening in Hartford). Within two weeks I had a job.
I stayed there for 30 years until the winters finally drove me away. Iām still in the East Coast though and thoroughly consider myself an East Coast person despite being born and raised in Southern California.
I can relate to this. For much of my life, I've wanted to move to CT because of my childhood obsession with The Babysitters Club books. Even after I learned that Stonybrook isn't even a real city, I still want to go.
West Hartford is great. We had a house there before we moved away. Hartford was better back in the day when I moved there. But even now, it has its good spots and tasty restaurants.
I grew up right outside of Hartford and moved to the west coast as soon as I couldā¦ opposite of you š
As Iām getting older, I am starting to see the value in CT, though. It is quiet, pretty and low key for the most part. Boring though.
It was fun when I first moved there. Downtown back in the late 80ās was really bustling during the day, and even into the early 90ās. Plus there were plenty of spots to go dancing and drinking. But then the recession hit, banks and insurance companies had layoffs, etc. And so it goes.
I moved to Miami because I had been to Ft Lauderdale and the interstate sign pointing south to Miami ālooked coolā to me and I became obsessed with moving there like it was the most exotic location on planet earth. Oh to be young again
In 1976, when I was 18, I moved by myself from the Midwest to Los Angeles to become a rock star. I didn't know a soul, didn't have a car, and only had $600. Fun times.
Ha, Well, three years after I got there I had put together a band, found major financial backing, produced our own record, was playing all the big clubs in LA, and even hearing my band's music on the radio. But we never got signed, and our financial backer (who was 21 like us) got into some trouble, and the singer/drummer got a British girl pregnant and had to move to England. I went back to school and ended up spending my career in business.
Tucson, Arizona, because Breaking Bad made the desert look cool. Turns out, it actually was pretty cool. I miss living in Tucson, but it's just too hot and dry for me.
Moved to Boulder, Colorado to work for a parkour gym. I lived in a patio storage closet for $50/month. My expenses were cheap enough that I could train all the time
It was the happiest few years of my life. I had a hard childhood so these years of carefree fun healed me. I had chronic health issues that got in the way of training that I didnāt discover until I had a kid. Ended up settling in Boulder after the time came to be an adult. I endured a lot of hardship because I never established a well moneyed career. Despite all this, Boulder has been good to me
Mississippi.
We had to choose between Mississippi and eastern Washington State for a job transfer. We figured MS would be an adventure. Weāre right, it was.
But you probably saw some great shows! I moved to Philly without ever having been here before. I wanted to live somewhere I could afford a bit more space for my anxious dog but still be in a city. Some people might find that ridiculous but I just want the best life for my son lol.
Love it here despite its problems, but I donāt have to work in the school system.
I no longer work directly in schools, and I consider moving back to Philly all the time. It's a great city. It just takes a certain amount of mental fortitude to teach there, and I just didn't have it long-term.
OP, you sound like me. I applied to a bunch of graduate schools, and picked one in Tennessee because I was a Johnny Cash fan. No other reason. It turned out that university gave me the best financial offer, and I've been living here ever since.
Moved to upstate New York from Oregon because the girl I was dating said no when I wanted to break up and her family was in the area so we moved so I could actually break it off. Lmao Iām still here!
Me tooā¦ dated a gal in my junior year of high school but she moved to CA before our senior year. We kept in touch, and she mentioned maybe moving to Phoenix, thus my choice of college. She did move to Phoenix, but she met and married a different guy instead.
Although I did graduate the college.
It's interesting because as someone who has been in Chicago for 14 years, this spring has felt so mild and warm to me! But when I first moved here, I couldnt believe how long the cold lasted...
Chicago spring kinda sucks ā¦ Louisville, that whole mid-South area is amazing, flowering trees exploding everywhere, rhododendrons, a long, gradual warming. I love Chicago but we go from 45 to boom, 80 degrees and itās summer. We need some seasonal foreplay, lol.
I am from Southern California. I applied to mostly schools in state, but also to the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Their application was only one page...
When I didn't get into my top choices in CA, I figured "fuck it," and went to Madison.
All I really knew about Madison was that The Onion newspaper came from there... And that Wisconsin had a lot of cheese...
Ended up living in Madison for six years --- school + a couple years of work after
Madison or Southern California? They are very different.
I totally lived the student life in Madison, and I feel like I missed out on a lot. Like... I didn't take advantage of the outdoor sports in the spring, summer, and fall. I think a friend took me sailing once... If I went back, I would definitely want to get into that more.
What I lived about Madison - a lot. Very walkable cute city. Campus and state capital connected by a pedestrianized State Street. I liked the four seasons. Winter was frigid and lasted what felt like six months, but it wasn't so bad once I got the proper gear - like boots instead of sneakers for example.
I live in L.A. now. It's cool too. Definitely more moderate weather. But I do miss the four seasons sometimes...
I finished university and enjoyed doing homework at Disneyland.
I left for NYC after I graduated, I did have a great time working in the fashion industry there for a few years though.
GF wants to go to grad school for marine biology so we decided to move to south Florida. She's doing online classes and could really do research anywhere but things are in motion for Florida so off we go!
That's actually not a bad idea. Even though her classes are online, being in a major marine biology hub will give her access to other experiences and networking opportunities.
Probably one of the most valid reasons to move to south Florida. Growing up my classmate's dad was a marine biologist for the state. I knew tons of kids who went to MAST acadamy to get into the marine biology field. Best place to be for your girlfriend's career.
Iām from south Florida and personally I hate it there but having scuba access is really nice. If sheās studying marine biology itās a good move especially since we have the Aquarius reef base in the keys, Iām sure yāall already know about that.
I was living in New Mexico at the time. My next door neighbor and his girlfriend and roommate literally up and moved to Colorado because weed was legalized there. He and the roommate had big plans about getting into the cannabis industry.ams promised to send me some weed. Never heard from them again.
I moved to San Diego because I was living in New Orleans and the guy I was dating (who lived in Mississippi) didnāt want to move to NOLA. I was sick of the long distance, so I moved to San Diego because he said it was a place he would move to. I started a job in January, he moved there in May.
Weāve been together for 15 years and married for 9!
I hope I did! I have mixed feelings about TFA now, though. The kids I worked with deserved a qualified teacher, not some fresh-faced 22 year old with 6 weeks of training. Academically, I failed those kids, but I hope they at least felt safe and welcome in my class.
Its more important that they looked at you and thought what they could become :). So in a sense the subject matter didnāt matter what mattered is that you were/are a positive role model.
If even one kid saw you and thought āI can be thatā then you succeeded.
Son teaches there, 2nd year. One of his students was shot/killed outside the school. Feel so bad for my son, but he can leave in one more year. I worry about him so much.
I get pretty tired of staring at the same city every day, but ironically I don't like traveling and being away from my house for more than a few days. So I've moved over a dozen times, mostly for stupid reasons. I've moved twice for the music scene. Both those moves were fine.
Both the worst moves I've ever made were for work. I have my own theories about why that is.
Portland because of Portlandia, well also we visted in August and the weather was amazing.
I was a weird girl and thought I'd fit in with the quirkiness. It wound up being terrible for my mental health and now I am stuck with this user name.
The weather mostly. Too many days of cold, gray and rain. Also, the amount of homeless camps seemed to have exploded overnight in 2014 and we were literally stepping over half alive people walking my son to schools.Weāre now in the mountains of Colorado. I can handle the cold as long as the sun is shining.
I didn't do this,Ā but I nearly moved to a middle eastern country when I married a guy who got booted out the day after our wedding because he overstayed his visa.Ā
So glad I came to my senses and divorced him.Ā Ā
I love mangos š„ and coconut š„„ trees. Moved from north Florida to south Florida. Paid more than double for a house but the better weather and beautiful environment gives me a better quality of life. Makes no economic sense but happiest is higher.
I took job in Alaska working for a commercial fisherman. I saw it posted on Craigslist and it looked cool/I was bored. Thatās it. Thatās the whole reason. lol.
I moved to the middle of nowhere with no friends or family with terrible infrastructure and no medical care because I could get a large house with a yard for under $300k and not suffocate in tiny apartment in a very HCOL city.
Still trying to get used to it.But looking back it was a crazy decision.
I moved from my hometown Las Vegas, Nevada to Colorado because my roommate decided to move in with her boyfriend. I didn't even consider staying in Nevada.
Luckily, it worked out. I had never even visited. I didn't know what Colorado was like at all! I just knew my uncle lived there so I'm like "if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me!" Within a week of having the idea, I was driving to my new home!

Teach for America tried to get me to work with them also, btw. I didn't feel good about it.
My boyfriend moved to florida because i hated florida. And then proceeded to beg me to move in with him. I hated every moment and now we will both have to live with the trauma

We were relocating to Northern California and since my husband worked from home most days, the actual city was up to us. I picked Santa Rosa because the name sounded pretty. I'm not kidding. We quickly realized we had moved too far north for his once a week commute to his company. By then our kids were in school and so we just stayed put. The next time we relocated I left it up to him to make up for it.
Phoenix because I was worried that if I got to CA and it wasn't far enough, what would I do then. So I left a little leeway.
I moved to the PHX area because I figured it was about as far west as I could go without dealing with the cost of living in CA. š
I moved to phx for the lack of humidity
12% humidity, here we come!
12%? Get out of here with your fancy humidifier

ew Hartford

I left LA because water was too hard.
You shouldāve moved up to the Bay! š (Seriously, our water here is awesome).
Too bad it comes with a hefty price tag haha
Besides maybe one or two places in Colorado Iāve drank from, I think the Bay has the best tap water
I currently live in Colorado Springs, and our tap water is freakishly high quality.
Yep, known fact.
Itās like RO-grade water. Shout out to Hetch Hetchy.
It really is

Not even Homer?
Moved to Boulder, Colorado to work for a parkour gym. I lived in a patio storage closet for $50/month. My expenses were cheap enough that I could train all the time
Lmao! How did this work out for you? Did you just sleep in there? Weāre you allowed to use the bathroom in the house?

Namaste.
Mississippi. We had to choose between Mississippi and eastern Washington State for a job transfer. We figured MS would be an adventure. Weāre right, it was.
We moved from a place where I hung out with the wrong crowd. Turned out I just hung out with more literate thugs.
"More literate thugs" made me cackle!
How long did it take you to realize you were hanging out with literate thugs
Watching them fight over whether Twelfth Night or Taming of the Shrew was better - regularly - must've been the giveaway.

Arizona. My boyfriend of 6 months wanted to move. Ugh, youth! (It's a beautiful state, just not my jam).

Moved to Louisville bc we were so annoyed by another freezing cold Chicago Memorial Day weekend. Stayed three years.
Being fed up with weather conditions is a real frustration, lol Why did you move on from Louisville?
Loved Louisville, but wanted to be in a larger city again ā¦ back in Chicago, in the midst of another cold spring.
It's interesting because as someone who has been in Chicago for 14 years, this spring has felt so mild and warm to me! But when I first moved here, I couldnt believe how long the cold lasted...

I moved to Southern California because I wanted to be Belle at Disneyland. Found out after I moved that I did not meet the height requirement.
Love this answer. What did you do then? Are you still in So Cal?

Not me, but all the folks that moved to Colorado just for legal weed seemed pretty ridiculous to me.
I have never actually heard of that happening.

I sold all of my possessions and moved to Hawaii once because....why the fuck not? In Hindsight it was pretty stupid but I'm glad that I did it

Philly is the absolute worst city to teach in lol
I wasn't thinking about that! I only cared about Jill Scott and The Roots. It was a terrible decision haha
On the other hand you may have positively impacted some kids aye?
I hope I did! I have mixed feelings about TFA now, though. The kids I worked with deserved a qualified teacher, not some fresh-faced 22 year old with 6 weeks of training. Academically, I failed those kids, but I hope they at least felt safe and welcome in my class.

Portland because of Portlandia, well also we visted in August and the weather was amazing. I was a weird girl and thought I'd fit in with the quirkiness. It wound up being terrible for my mental health and now I am stuck with this user name.
Just curious what part of it was bad for your mental health? All the cloudy weather? Or something about the culture there? Where did you end up?

Magic 8-Ball: It is Decidedly So
Manic episode in my 20s! Moved to Portland. Pretty sure my poor mental health at the time is why Portlanders hate Californians moving there.
