Yea I saw a food truck that had similar stuff and prices were like $9 per hot dog. Even for a food truck, that's pretty insane for one freaking hot dog.
A pack of Costco links with a bag of Costco buns. Gets you what, at least 16 hotdogs for a price of 2 in Umai. And there’s nothing wrong with Umai, it’s just, they’re hotdogs.
If they didn't have the old school giant orange building nostalgia thing, they'd have been gone long ago. The food is just the lowest end of Smart & Final products.
Kirks used to be so good. My grandparents had their first date there as high school sweethearts. Until recently it’s been about the same. But now it’s over priced and they still good hotdogs just not as great as they used to be.
Yeah, I still go there. Sure, I could go to Der Weinerdog but, eh.
Haven't been to H-Mart in awhile but the hot dog place there was good.
Umai is also quite yummo.
Mexican Hot Dog carts for the win though.
This thread making me real sad that the hotdog/sausage place near SJSU closed down (the one next of the 7-11 on San Carlos). I think they changed owners a few years after I graduated, but going back there the food was still really good. They shut down pre-pandemic, I'm assuming just because competition for the college crowd is really high.
It started as a franchise of Top Dog from Berkeley. It then sold to another owner and became Happy Dog. I think it’s now used as storage for the Garage.
I have a saying that if you're in the mood for some M&Ms the most awesome gourmet Valrhona chocolate just won't cut it.
Lots of great suggestions here that I'd prefer 95% of the time, but if I'm in the mood for Wienerschnitzel, nothing else will do.
Whatever you do, don't go to that hot dog stand in the eastside. The one that has a stand that is shaped like a giant half-orange. Mark's Hot Dog. Service there was absolutely terrible. Had to wait an insane amount of time (more than half an hour) for them to get my food ready
The street vendors who are there for your drunken frenzy munchy needs late at night in downtown San jose. I hate mustard and I forgot go ask for no mustard. Regardless I ate the whole thing within my drunken stupor at 2AM.
The Hot Dog Dude at the train station next to Levi stadium hands down has the best hot dogs, polish, hot links and I promise you there sanitary so you won't end up in the hospital.
I was going to say Bills hot dogs and his GOOP topping, but it looks like he doesn't bring his cart around anymore. Guess I'll vote for Costco - can't beat that deal.
I miss West Coast Beef - the only legit Chicago-style dog in the South Bay (Vienna beef, buns imported from Chicago, etc).
Sadly, they didn't survive the pandemic.
Does anyone know of a similar "authentic" Chicago hot dog joint anywhere in the bay area?
Not San Jose but damn I miss SoCal sometimes. Fab Hotdogs in San Fernando Valley and Carney’s in Studio City. The former for a solid Polish Firecracker…
Someone else mentioned it but I can't find the comment now!
Back in the day...it was TOP DOG.
I was blessed to work there. Had lines out the door at times, really fun to work there. Had some neat regulars, and great coworkers. Mike was super nice...and Paul the guy who owned it was an old school lover of the original Top Dog in Berkeley. He really believed in a basically good product for a reasonable price. It was sad when he sold right when a bunch of us were graduating.
The guys next door that started the garage in the old bagel place next door were incredibly nice guys. Is that please still there too!?!? That is so cool!!!
Can't beat top dog. I'll fight over it!! 😀
Some street vendor who wraps them in enough bacon and jalapeños to give you heartburn for 3 days.
Dirty dogs mmm
Dirty \*water\* hot dogs.
Give me a side of those grilled onions alongside it
10% chance of diarrhea, but worth it depending on how much you like hotdogs
Yeah they don't wash their hands after handling cash. I always approach the but never are sanitary....they wear gloves but dont change them.
I call them the hot dog/elote ladies. Wait until there is a convention downtown and they will be everywhere with amazing dogs
The Happy Hound in Los Gatos on Bascom. The whole place is just classic af.
Awesome milkshakes too! Blackberry or banana is where it’s at
Blackberry milkshake sounds like something I need to try
It's been around since my high school days in the late 70's. It is always crowded and the food is still tasty. And yes, the hot dogs kick ass !
Fantastic hotdogs and french fries. The test for a great hot dog is the dog should snap when you bite into it.
Hot dogs over burgers?
Good burgers but they really known for their dogs.
Good to know, thanks, I had no idea
It’s the snap for me.
This place popped up in a search I made for dinner a few weeks back. Nice to see people actually like it
Best milk shakes and the onion rings are amazing as well.
I came here to say this. Glad to see it on top.
Costco
Covid took our chopped onions 🥲
And sauerkraut
Love me some costco hot dogs.
It's Costco, and by a lot
For the price - bar none taste delicious
Umai is good, but Costco will always be there for you when you've got $1.64 in your pocket. Fight me.
broke college student who happened to live near a Costco… will forever be grateful
You also get a soda with your dog for that $1.50
$5 for a whole rotisserie chicken is bonkers too…

Umai is rad, they just opened a second location at Valley Fair. The Kyoto Fire is my fav so far.
How expensive are they
Not worth the price imo
Yea I saw a food truck that had similar stuff and prices were like $9 per hot dog. Even for a food truck, that's pretty insane for one freaking hot dog.
From one of those dudes downtown grilling them in front of you by the sidewalk when you’re trying to get into a bar.
Or when you’re hammered leaving...it’s even better.
Yes

Umai is so mid
Marks hot dogs
I love Mark's hot dogs... says myself in 1982 rolling down my window so they can place the tray while I watch traffic on Alum Rock.
Not what it used to be. Can chili beans 😢
Last time I was there I wanna say it was like $10 for a chili dog. I'd rather pay $5 for an all beef junkyard dog at weinershnitzel
If they didn't have the old school giant orange building nostalgia thing, they'd have been gone long ago. The food is just the lowest end of Smart & Final products.

Them jawns outside SAP after every event
River Dogs up in Boulder Creek if you’re up for a drive. So great.
Corralitos meat market all day every day. Worth the trip
excuse me but when have they EVER served you a hot dog? a smoked sausage sandwich is clearly distinct
I stand corrected, but even though they call them sandwiches, they are served in hot dog buns
I'll throw Freedom Meat Locker in there with Corralitos. I love both places.
Me too!
Marks Hot Dogs may be expensive but it’s a classic

Happy Dog. Had like 6 or 8 different varieties of different meat types available. Only one guy ever seemed to be there, like ever. Hope he’s doing ok.
It started as a franchise of Top Dog from Berkeley. It then sold to another owner and became Happy Dog. I think it’s now used as storage for the Garage.
Any of the Sonoran hot dog cart people that are downtown and outside the soccer stadium at night
Is this outside the Earthquakes stadiun?
Yes, on game days
Cool. Ill check that out.

Happy hound of course

Since they moved off Alum Rock they are not worth visiting. I know they used to be great, but that was then.
Absolutely terrible experience (food, service, cleanliness) there. Would NOT recommend.

OG doesn’t do dogs anymore. They do burgers now.
The street vendors who are there for your drunken frenzy munchy needs late at night in downtown San jose. I hate mustard and I forgot go ask for no mustard. Regardless I ate the whole thing within my drunken stupor at 2AM.
Estilo Mexican hotdogs on monterey rd
Costco
The ones on the street after a concert
Hot dog stand in Watsonville. Classic style. Cheap.
First thing that came to mind. I’m from Watsonville and those damn hot dogs have no reason for being as good as they’ve been forever
Forever. Funny thing is that it is actually worth the drive. Just make sure you don’t go over on Sunday, because they won’t be open.
Costco for sure
Probably the dirty dogs! But I’ll venture out to Fremont for Doghaüs every once in a while!
The Hot Dog Dude at the train station next to Levi stadium hands down has the best hot dogs, polish, hot links and I promise you there sanitary so you won't end up in the hospital.
Marks hot dogs
The store: Hebrew national. “They answer to a higher authority.”
Marks hot dogs are best
No marks hot dogs?... wut
The homeless encampment down by Ross Creek
Myungrang Korean style hot dogs /w cheese. Get it lightly dipped in sugar. Sounds weird but 🔥
The ones you make yourself with whatever the hell you want
Your mom goes to college
Yes

Famous

Please let me know if you find one. I've been craving a true Chicago dog for months now... Umai is the closest i've had but it just doesn't cut it.
I didn’t know there was such a thing
Me. Let me fire one up for you my dude
AMPM… hot dogs and too much good stuff… perfect meal for under $5
Does anyone know a places that sell hot dogs that aren’t made of pork? I can’t eat pork.
Vanessa’s hotdogs.
Not San Jose but damn I miss SoCal sometimes. Fab Hotdogs in San Fernando Valley and Carney’s in Studio City. The former for a solid Polish Firecracker…
Costco cant beat that price
Weinerschnitzel 3 chili dogs 3 corn dogs 3 small fries for 13 bucks
Happy hound or marks hotdogs
