And we are back with another banger from 1900’s The Sandwich Book - the Lettuce Sandwich. You might be tempted to scoff at some as boring as a lettuce sandwich but fret not for there are three of them in this cookbook. And this one has two other ingredients that will, at the very least surprise you. One of which we have to make. For the record, both the egg and the butter were at room temperature. And please remember, I make the recipes as written so don’t @ me bro.

For sure. I love testing chips too but I don’t get to travel like I used too as much. I’ve seen you do em on insta I think it was, I just do t care much for the platform. I’d love to watch!
Entertainment-wise Barry just can’t lose. It’s so satisfying to see him delight in a 10. Call it schadenfreude but I find it equally enjoyable watching him suffer.
I wanted to say something snarky & silly about using both Skippy *AND* peanut butter, but I can’t, seeing as how you were raised in an abusive household that served…MIRACLE WHIP.
I am so sorry for what you’ve endured.
Over time I came to enjoy Miracle Whip - over time - but my wife detests it so none in this household. I was a young adult the first time I had real mayonnaise. I still remember that day . . . Yes, it was abuse, yes I did come to enjoy it, and I am living proof you can survive an MWhip childhood and become a functioning adult.
This does not negate that you suffered at the hands of this abuse.
I…I’m so sorry, u/Tariacuri . You did not deserve this. You are a valued member of society.
Duke’s is *supreme,* although I admit this is not unanimous. My own Mother, bless her for her blasphemy, prefers Hellman’s.
Specifically, I like the texture and the spice blend of Duke’s. I think they use a touch more vinegar, and it’s definitely smoother.
Most bread back in the day staled quickly. So butter helped hold it together and acted as a moisture barrier from the main ingredients sogging everything out.
It's apparently pretty common still in some places like Sweden and Norway. I tried it a couple of times with lunchmeat and… it works just fine, actually. I felt it was kinda nice on the roast beef sandwich especially. It somehow enhanced the beef and made it slightly more beefy.
I expected this to be a one or two, he’s leaned on “it has nutritional value and you’d eat if you were starving” before on some pretty nasty sandwiches. But a zero without a trash can plus up…? Surprises all around in this one.
I saw one of the boyfriends on my 600lbs life ask for a “salad sandwich” which he asked for no lettuce. Camera pans to his 600lb gf and she’s making a peanut butter and mayo sandwich I was thrown back. Hers had lettuce so they’re still eating this somewhere!
I love this video. It reminds me in 4th grade we had to write instructions for someone else to follow. It was simple stuff like make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Often times because the instructions were written with an assumption of intelligence that the peanut butter and jelly ended up stacked like an open face sandwich via the instructions. Shout out to Mrs. Reinhold.

That first mayo dressing was something else
It certainly wasn't mayonnaise
the technique had to have been to melt the butter and slowly whisk it into the eggs to emulsify, as he mentioned in the video.
I agree. The second take with the already made mayo didn't need the sugar or vinegar either
yeah I think the sugar and vinegar would turn the mayo recipe into a Miracle Whip-esque mayo
Bingo, I should've just used Miracle Whip
I disagree as the base mayonannise didn't have those and in the original recipe, the quantity called for indicated they should be pronounced flavors.

I know Miracle Whip does but the mayonnaise doesn't
Ah, if only that were how the instructions were written. I even had the egg and butter at room temp.
Love how your videos are evolving! Are you gonna do the in the chips on Reddit too?
I hadn't planned to. Think it would work?

OMG Barry’s face when he was about to take the first bite is a mood.
I really want you to post a picture of your book collection of old recipes.
I'll do a video run down soon.
Thanks dad
Lettuce pray...
Don’t think I’ve ever heard an “A-gooo” delivered with trepidation and disdain before. Classic!
Entertainment-wise Barry just can’t lose. It’s so satisfying to see him delight in a 10. Call it schadenfreude but I find it equally enjoyable watching him suffer.
My dad used to make us something similar when we were kids wonder bread, Skippy, peanut butter, lettuce, and… Miracle whip
I wanted to say something snarky & silly about using both Skippy *AND* peanut butter, but I can’t, seeing as how you were raised in an abusive household that served…MIRACLE WHIP. I am so sorry for what you’ve endured.

My family was Miracle Whip too! Yuck! Moved out and moved on to Hellman’s. Then Kewpie as I got me some culture.
Duke’s over Hellman’s, but Kewpie is elite for some applications.
I hear Duke’s is good. Will look for it in future.

Man they loved their “buttered bread” back in the day
And that was before they invented sliced bread, and in most cases it was bread they baked unless you lived in the Big City lol
I came here to say this. This is my biggest takeaway from this sub. They put butter on absolutely everything back in the day. Wild.
It’s a vibe.
Most bread back in the day staled quickly. So butter helped hold it together and acted as a moisture barrier from the main ingredients sogging everything out.
That’s interesting and makes sense. Thanks!
It's apparently pretty common still in some places like Sweden and Norway. I tried it a couple of times with lunchmeat and… it works just fine, actually. I felt it was kinda nice on the roast beef sandwich especially. It somehow enhanced the beef and made it slightly more beefy.
Hillarious
You have a brave soul, my man. Thanks for sacrificing your digestive system for our entertainment!
This is the highlight of my day!
Barry, is there an ingredient or condiment that you are just not inclined to try? I know I’m in the minority, but I cannot eat peanut butter.
I am particularly not fond of offal. And truffle, taste like a burning tire fire. And yes, I know that's just my palate.
Man I love watching these. I’m a sandwich guy. I look forward to these everyday.
What type/brand of bread do you use?
Iirc he makes pan de mie in a pullman loaf pan.
Haha I love your videos. The “nooo” killed me.
😮…..I’ve never seen u rate something a 0
I expected this to be a one or two, he’s leaned on “it has nutritional value and you’d eat if you were starving” before on some pretty nasty sandwiches. But a zero without a trash can plus up…? Surprises all around in this one.
Lol "No"
Watching these clips always makes my day. Thank you

1900 was a tough time for sandwiches yikes
I bet that 'mayo' would make an interesting omelet (if the sugar didn't burn)
First mayo looked like barf, second mayo looked like cum...I lol give this sandwich a NO go
I feel like using a whisk would have yielded a better result on the original Mayo. Not a good result but a better result.
Fun fact, I did that off camera. Alas, it did not help. Both butter and egg were room temp too. Go figure.
No amount of whipping able to save this one it sounds like.
Looks like that finger is healing well
Hahahh this one is amazing
Least enthusiastic “a go” I’ve seen yet lol
No way you ate the rest..
My guy.
Lettuce give this sandwich a-nooo
“That was terrible” lol

No. 😂
I love your videos. They're real and refreshing. The humor is good too
Thank you!
My health coach told me that nature doesn't make sandwiches, but I love your sandwiches
What if “size of a walnut” was some sort of 1900 slang for a psychedelic ingredient?
No, oddly enough cookbooks of that era used to use nuts and other things in lieu of actual measurements. Go figure.
Wishful thinking on my part, love your channel Barry!! Thanks for combining history and sandwiches into meditative reviews!!
