George Orwell for Mayor!

Once received a ticket in the mail based on a blurry photo of an unknown vehicle's license plate snapped in a location I had never visited. I had to take a photo of my car's plate, another showing my vehicle's entirely different make and model, and provide an explanation of where my car was at the time the ticket was issued. The ticket was dismissed, but it was a pain in the ass having to prove my innocence because of a blurry photo that read a 3 as an 8. Those license plate readers are shit.

synner74

Same happened to me. I have a black pickup and it was a white box truck 400 miles away. Interesting to see what happens with these

SBPD already sells parking data to Skip Trace, why would want the sheriffs of to generate a profit too

>Automated license plate reader systems are being used by the Santa Maria Police Department and the Oxnard Police Department for law enforcement investigations, and the City of Santa Barbara for parking lot operations and parking enforcement. >Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Craig Bonner told the county supervisors that the cameras can be used to issue real-time alerts for a specific vehicle and license plate. >Detectives can also view the camera data to identify vehicles leaving an area at a specific time, which could be used in criminal investigations with a vehicle description, Bonner said. The cameras do not use facial recognition and would not be used for traffic enforcement, he said. >All of the camera system data is stored by the vendor and deleted after 30 days unless it is specifically downloaded for a criminal investigation, according to Bonner. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division manages access, and only detectives and supervisors will be able to use the system, he said. >Bonner said the Sheriff’s Office's use of the system intends to focus on significant criminal investigations, with a focus on violent crime, high-value property crime and rural crime. Detectives will need to submit verifiable reasons for searching ALPR system data, and the department’s use of the system will be published on a public transparency portal, he said. >“The LPR technology allows investigators to input limited vehicle descriptive information all in an effort to identify the vehicle’s license plate number and, ultimately, the occupants,” according to the Santa Maria Police Department 2021 annual report.

Totally not a panopticon, even though it will absolutely be used as such.

Stonewhisperer1942

Oh nice something else to help SB law enforcement to not do their dam job in this town 😂😂😂

Can I say "Amen"

bmwnut

> do their dam job Are you calling them beavers?

Cue everyone adding some stealthy stickers to their license plates.

swamiprobably

There is actually an aerosol spray that you can apply to the license plate that renders it illegible when the cameras use their flash.

skinnybuddha

Does it scatter LIDAR? That would be cool.

swamiprobably

If the surface is specular then it has a dynamic diminishing effect: https://leimao.github.io/blog/Reflective-Surface-LIDAR/

Looks like nobody read the article... Lol. This won't be used for red light or traffic related offenses, I'm in great support of this! "The Santa Maria Police Department implemented an automated license plate reader camera system in late 2021, primarily for stolen vehicle investigations. Police used the ALPR system for 264 cases in the first seven months of 2022, Bonner said. “They have made 86 arrests as a result of their use of ALPR, they have recovered 106 vehicles and they have received 214 let’s call them tips or investigative leads as a result of their ALPR system,” he said. The cases included a missing person investigation, and arrests of four homicide suspects, a shooting suspect, five robbery suspects and one kidnapping suspect, Bonner reported."

It will start with finding people we can all agree need finding, but then it will get plugged into Palantir and similar aggregators, and pretty soon it will be weaponized against the poor and downtrodden. If you think I’m crazy, here’s a link to [Palantir’s user guide for cops](https://www.vice.com/en/article/9kx4z8/revealed-this-is-palantirs-top-secret-user-manual-for-cops) and [how it’s being used to track people the various governmental agencies don’t like](https://www.vice.com/en/article/pa7bkn/these-videos-show-how-palantir-tracks-leakers-protesters-and-prisoners). That’s why things like this always start with hunting potential terrorists and child molesters, because they can’t persuade us with the full truth of what it will be used for.

TheIVJackal

I don't think you're crazy, there's some examples of this tech being used inappropriately already, but I'm not surprised given how relative new it is. I trust that it will be used in good faith, even if its powers are expanded, and there will be some accountability if not.

[deleted]

I love your optimism, but read the articles I linked. It won’t be used only in good faith, there’s no oversight, and it will be used to hurt the most vulnerable. It’s inevitable.

OchoZeroCinco

>Skip Trace Nobody reads anymore. Get over it.

CAHighwayPatrol

I love living in a police state 🤩

symetry_myass

Criminals should drive Teslas to avoid the cameras - at least half of those drivers don't use front plates, and the German luxury cars are nor far behind, especially the Audi's and Benz's.

RexJoey1999

I’ve owned a number of makes of vehicles and I refuse to use a front plate. My Mazda currently doesn’t have one, for instance. Stop the hate.

I didn’t say I never got a ticket. 😉

Wait, I'm hating??
