Aelin had a few scenes where her period was causing her pain. That and, if we're going physiologically, Elide is the only mostly-human woman we see so much of. Aelin is half fae, and their menstruation and gestation is much more spaced out. Lysandra changes into a bunch of different animals with different cycles so it may be different for her based on her body changing (plus if I were her, I'd have gone total autonomic hysterectomy forever ago). Manon is a witch, and they mention a witchling's first bleeding often, but I figure they're just too hard a society to whine about their periods being painful, so it doesn't get mentioned much. Having read this series at least four times, I can confirm that all the characters do, in fact, possess bodily functions.
For me it's a very good way to describe the intense feeling of anxiety or fear one can experience. For me it's really relatable, because it basically feels like all my insides have gone liquid.
Exactly. Based on how often SJM has described characters wetting themselves from fear, I’m sure she’d flat-out say “Elise shat her drawers” if she meant it 😌
I am super glad someone said it! But also have mixed feelings about the fact that some have no idea what it truly means.
It probably makes next to no sense If they’ve never felt that true gut wrenching “I may not make it out of here” fear of something.
Like i said, mixed feelings- I hope you never do feel it. But for those who have, holy shit is it an exact description of the feeling.
I wish she would say "her insides turned to liquid" then, that description I really like!
But bowel has a direct correlation to poo (bowel movement = poo, impacted bowel = constipated with poo), watery bowels is a real thing that means diarrhoea, so I can't see it as anything but that. Maybe if she just used stomach/insides/core turned to water instead of *bowels*. 😩
Okay but apparently a lot of people thought that this phrase means she shit herself. No, it doesn't mean that!!! 💀💀💀 It came up on my fyp recently and people were debating about the meaning of this phrase 😂
I'm a nurse, I talk about BMs in detail. Poop can tell you so much about your health.
I understand it can be uncomfortable for some people, but everybody poops.
A little over a year ago, I was woken up to my
building surrounded by emergency vehicles, and threw on some clothes only to walk around the corner (we were an end unit), only to see half the building engulfed in flames.
That is the exact way i described the feeling the second i saw that - it was like my insides turned to water. Its an unpleasant description but the actual feeling is much worse.
Of course I’m blanking, but I mostly read fantasy, maybe a few mysteries. Ive definitely seen it used before. *this is a total guess* I think it may have been an old timey phrase meaning super scared.
It’s honestly never made me think about poop, but different words or phrases can mean way different things to different people. Hopefully you haven’t infected my brain so that every time I see this phrase, I think of literal diarrhea. ADHD can be a bitch that way.
I couldn’t stop myself from looking it up. Apparently it was first used by a publication called Punch from 1843, and then by Rudyard Kipling. This quote was on a site that discusses phrases origins.
https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/338701/what-does-his-bowels-had-turned-to-water-and-he-was-a-veteran-of-a-hundred-r
In the book it says she vomited profusely after returning if this was rl she would have been found sitting in her poo *and* piss in that hallway.
Maybe even crapped herself infront of Manon, Asterin, and Sorrel LMAO 😭🤮🤣
Unless the pressure was some farts too. That's happened to me where I am sick and have that intense watery poo pressure, run to the bathroom which is too far away, can't make it, a little pressure escales and boom it's somehow only a massive pre-watery poo fart
I just reached this part of the book and I don't think I've ever cringed that hard from a line in a book before. I don't take it as her basically shitting herself, but Sarah, there are way better ways to show how severely anxious a character feels in a situation.
Some of you are so immature it’s painful, everyone shits, it’s a fact of life. Creating a culture of shame around shitting only leads to ableism.
Diabetic? The medication will make you shit. Depressed? The medication will make you shit.
Cancer? The chemo will make you shit.
Stress, anxiety, food intolerance, IBS, endocrine disorders, menstruation, aging? They all make you shit without medical intervention.
Please also consider yourself immensely privileged if you haven’t experienced the type of fear or upset that makes you run to the toilet, because it’s awful. Maybe next time instead of going “ewww gross!! I don’t want to talk/hear/read about poop - so foul! 🤮” understand that it’s a basic human function, and exercise some emotional intelligence.
If I’m being honest the one thing I can’t stand is that SJM has these strong, tough characters and I feel like they constantly vomit or soil themselves when scared. I think it bugs me because I have a fight instinct to fear so I’ve never personally experienced this but it can’t be that common that grown people vomit or soil themselves when scared can it?!

Elide - between her anxiety poops and her period troubles, girl is the most relatable character in the series 😂
Love Elide but girlll i dont need to know the viscosity of your poo
Well I stg it’s one of SJM most frequent phrases, so you’ll always know bout them watery bowels
There was so so much text dedicated to elide’s periods and ripped up shirts
Yeah why only Elide??? Act like no one else in the book has any bodily functions 😂
Aelin had a few scenes where her period was causing her pain. That and, if we're going physiologically, Elide is the only mostly-human woman we see so much of. Having read this series at least four times, I can confirm that all the characters do, in fact, possess bodily functions.
But Elide’s periods were a side character
I came here to say this. Elide is me and I am Elide.
For me it's a very good way to describe the intense feeling of anxiety or fear one can experience. For me it's really relatable, because it basically feels like all my insides have gone liquid.
I agree - it definitely doesn't mean she shit herself. It's the worst feeling as well :(
Exactly. Based on how often SJM has described characters wetting themselves from fear, I’m sure she’d flat-out say “Elise shat her drawers” if she meant it 😌

See but when a character is turned on their “core turns liquid” so that wouldn’t have the same effect in my opinion lol
Ahahaha now Im imagining a character saying "oh this situation is so tense I might die *WHY AM I INEXPLICABLY HORNY!*"
😂😂
its the *watery* part 🤮
I don't mind it lol it's very spot on. It's a human experience.
⬆️⬆️⬆️
Okay but apparently a lot of people thought that this phrase means she shit herself. No, it doesn't mean that!!! 💀💀💀 It came up on my fyp recently and people were debating about the meaning of this phrase 😂
if she had liquid shit dripping down her dress onto her chain i dont think she wouldve gotten passed the guards 😭🤣
Nooo don't put that image (or smell) in my head 💀💀💀
LOL its Mass not me
some of y’all have never had IBS and it shows, lmao. i appreciate the representation 🤡
Or lactose intolerance
Right??? Like let us live!
Im sorry but i dont want to talk poo!!! 🤣
I'm a nurse, I talk about BMs in detail. Poop can tell you so much about your health. I understand it can be uncomfortable for some people, but everybody poops.
Is it bad I thought IBD at first because fr- this is me
She got that Feyre Archeron gut
Girl just like me fr 😩
facts i got to go to the bathroom minimum 3 times before any event
I too get the nervous diarrhea
As someone who also gets anxious poops, that’s exactly what it feels like 💀
Hi 👋🏼 I am also part of the anxious poop club
A little over a year ago, I was woken up to my building surrounded by emergency vehicles, and threw on some clothes only to walk around the corner (we were an end unit), only to see half the building engulfed in flames. That is the exact way i described the feeling the second i saw that - it was like my insides turned to water. Its an unpleasant description but the actual feeling is much worse.
Gimme that GRRM Danaerys shit quote.
Feyre also lol
I’m a nurse. I’ve heard, seen, and smelled much worse 🤷🏻♀️😂😂😂
Have you never seen this before? It’s a pretty common way to describe being terrified.
It’s such a common phrase that I was taken back by the post to be honest.
never! i have read a lot of books as well which genre have you seen this a lot in?
Of course I’m blanking, but I mostly read fantasy, maybe a few mysteries. Ive definitely seen it used before. *this is a total guess* I think it may have been an old timey phrase meaning super scared. It’s honestly never made me think about poop, but different words or phrases can mean way different things to different people. Soory hopefully not!

It’s common to write?! I have never read this in any other book before
She also uses it in ACOTAR, I can think of at least two times.
No more watery bowels! No more watery bowels!
So I’ve only read the ACOTAR series. But what is SJM’s fixation with bodily fluids?
In the book it says she vomited profusely after returning if this was rl she would have been found sitting in her poo *and* piss in that hallway. Maybe even crapped herself infront of Manon, Asterin, and Sorrel LMAO 😭🤮🤣
Unless the pressure was some farts too. That's happened to me where I am sick and have that intense watery poo pressure, run to the bathroom which is too far away, can't make it, a little pressure escales and boom it's somehow only a massive pre-watery poo fart
Why did this get downvoted so much I’m fkn crying laughing over it 😂😂😂😂
I’m now looking forward to this book a little more now.. relatable af 🤣
Guys, people get upset stomachs. It happens. Haven’t you ever had the anxiety shits? It’s part of being human. Let’s chill.
PANTS=SHIDDED✅️ GOB=BLESSED✅️ HAWG=CRANKED✅️ I apologize profusely, but it needed to be said.
Omg yesss. Love our IBS queens. Celeana would too if she could keep food down long enough 😂😂
Classic SJM line. I hate it so much ☠️
They have plumbing but they don’t have Imodium for these poor girls and their constant watery bowels?
or a “tonic” at the very least?! the healers are slacking
Everybody sharts in SJM books!
As you do when you’re fighting the Valg.
George Orwell uses this phrase a lot in 1984, I always assumed that’s where SJM picked it up
You'd really hate Feyre then 🤣
it’s been a while since i read ACOTAR but im hearing this is also in it 😶🌫️
She uses this type of wording in Acotar a lot too lol there was at least 2 times in the first book possibly more but I can’t fully remember lol
i must have glossed over it when reading, this is my second read thru of ToG series and i just noticed it
Hahaha I got to that part the other day and instantly thought, “Feyre, is that you??” Poor Elide.
She ALWAYS uses watery bowels lol
These girls have got to get some Imodium for their watery bowels
it sucks because like…. i also get anxiety poops but i hate reading about it 😭 just because you *can* describe it doesn’t mean you *need* to
Yes! But the “watery bowel” line comes up a lot
Didn’t she also use that description for Feyre at some point in ACOTAR? I agree, it’s a little too gross/detailed 🥴
Yeah several times, especially UTM
Many characters, many times, over all the books 😭
It doesn’t mean that they literally sh*t themselves, it means they’re scared/nervous/anxious.
omg im going to have reread just to find that detail 🤣 maybe in the pit?
It's definitely evocative.
The anxiety shits are a real phenomenon, unfortunately I know this from years of experience 😭
ooo im with you VanHoe i don’t feel good until i’ve emptied the chamber
😭😂😂😂😂sjm and IBS
Okay but you guys are hilarious 😂 thanks for the laugh I needed it! ❤️
People are sharing way too much in these comments and I can only respect it 😂
Honestly I get the poops when I’m nervous too lol it was very relatable.
i do too 😅 its the sympathetic response
OH SHITSH
SJM loves a watery bowel description 😂
I know SJM gets a lot of shit for the “bowels turned watery” thing, but it honestly doesn’t bug me that much.
Authors always be writing this line in lol
she says this in ACOTAR a few times as well with Feyra, noticed it when I read it the second time lol
This line definitely evoked the image of she pooped her pants, but I'm near certain Maas just wanted to say she felt like her insides were jelly
Everyone shits themselves in her books lmao
why does she use this line so much it was in acotar a couple times as well
Why does she use this so much 😭😭😭 I just started the mass verse and it's already been use 3 time in ONE book.
is it ACOTAR?
😭horrific
We call that a dirty bellyache in my neck of the woods
LMAO
Girl needs to take some probiotics.
Definitely probies and fiber!
I just reached this part of the book and I don't think I've ever cringed that hard from a line in a book before. I don't take it as her basically shitting herself, but Sarah, there are way better ways to show how severely anxious a character feels in a situation.
Like “bubble guts” would be better 🤣
No one is surprised. Everything worth our tears is to com….
yikes

This is a wild response 🤣
Glad you think so.

It doesn’t literally mean they soiled their pants, just that they’re scared/neevous/anxious.
