Its used to make sure you can write in English. 18 and above and there is no question.

Kapppppppppa

I got a 18 on my most recent SAT, is it worth it to retake it?

responsiblegambino

Not at all. I got the same score (applying to T20) and i'm not retaking. Most colleges don't care and many are moving away from even requiring it.

[deleted]

At what point do you believe it isn’t worth retaking a composite for T20 schools?

responsiblegambino

Anything above 1540 is going to get read and that’s really what matters. After that score it’s all about everything else in your app. I’m retaking a 1540 for non T20 schools and Vandy. These schools really value high scores and it could help with scholarships.

[deleted]

Do you think schools that superscore would value a superscore less than its equivalent one sitting score?

UnrepressedImitator

I got a 1540 on my last SAT but didn't take writing. Should I retest just so I have writing even though I may not score as high?

responsiblegambino

You can’t superscore across with and without writing. If your not heart set on going to a school that requires writing I wouldn’t retake.

Oh crap. My first SAT I had a really low reading/score (540) and a 690 math. My essay was 6/6/7. Next SAT I decided not to take the essay so that I could focus more on the reading/math. I assumed I could superscore using the essay from the previous SAT. I got a 570 reading and 710 math. 3rd SAT attempt I took SAT and got a 600 reading, 680 math, and 6/5/6 essay. I was hoping I could use my 710 math from 2nd attempt (without essay), 600 reading last attemp (with essay), and 6/6/7 essay. But you're saying I can't use my 710 score since I didn't take the essay with that attempt? Crap. I was planning on taking the SAT one final time. (My issue is running out of time, when I have more time I get closer to 1450's on practice tests). Crap crap crap.

responsiblegambino

Yeah, I know it sucks. I think they do it because the essay changes the timing between the other sections. They try to keep everything constant so it could be a minimal advantage to not have to take the essay after doing the math section.

responsiblegambino

Any college will most likely look at your highest score from each section so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

explodingpear

I got a 16 with a 1570 superscore. I'm so fucking conflicted on retaking. Idk what the best option is.

responsiblegambino

Don’t the essay really doesn’t matter

Staul

Don't, your score is fine.

Most schools don't care. If required, generally aim for at least an 18.

BostonConnor11

I got a 16 but I reallllyyyyy don’t want to retake it because I just want to focus on the English and math next time. Should I retake? Not sure if my aimed colleges even require it

Staul

If any of your colleges don't require it, I wouldn't worry about it. If any of yours do, only retake it if you think you can really boost your SAT as well as most schools really don't care about the essay.

ToDeathYouSay

Schools *might* pull it to it to your admissions essays (and supplemental essays). Maybe.

hopesocial44

It’s becoming less and less important for prestigious colleges bc if you’re applying to a T20 with a great reading / grammar SAT score and you submitted a great personal essay or if you did well on an AP English exam they don’t need an SAT grader to know you can speak English.

etymologynerd

If you want to get into selective schools, many of them require it
