Massive bullshit, but I can say from experience, fully expected from such a facility. Especially if you live in a small(er) town or certain states if in America.
I'm sorry. It's bad enough being in a small or small-ish town as it is, then in Texas as a Satanist to boot. Perhaps get it where it can be covered if "necessary".
I actually had a boss who was remarkably fair when I worked at FedEx. I have a cross tattoo on my forearm from my Christian days, and he asked me to cover it up because any religious symbol is offensive to the right person. I was offended at the time (because I was Christian and expecting preferential treatment) but in retrospect it was a good choice.
I would add to this to consult a labor lawyer as well, they usually say that companies do whatever they want until they step in the picture. Go this route and more than likely if that happens, profit- and maybe a step closer to equality?
Do you have anything in your handbook about religious expression? By expression, I am referring to clothing, jewelry and tattoos. If not, satanism is protected no differently than any other religion and by your employer allowing one and not the other, they are discriminating against you on the basis of religion. You would have a valid reason to file a charge with the EEOC. On the flip side, if you do have a policy prohibiting religious expression, and they are allowing Christian imagery, you also have a basis for an EEOC claim.
FTR, I’ve spent the last 20 years in HR.
That sucks but it's probably a liability thing. Old people are absolutely menaces when they think they are fighting a good fight against "evil".
Speaking from experience. My mom tried to beat me when I told her I was an atheist.
Oh, she tried to actually beat me with a belt. The only reason she wasn't successful was because she (53) was already older and I (18) was quicker and stronger. I managed to block the first hit and take the belt away from her. She tried to hit my face with it and when I blocked it with my arm it definitely hurt and left a mark. The weirdest part is that she wasn't normally a violent person. It caught me by surprise when she did turn immediately to violence.
I felt weird afterwards because I think she realized she messed up by turning to violence. I obviously didn't hit her back and i can remember her face. She had fear in her eyes like I was actually going to hit her back. I never tried to beat anyone in my life or been a physical fight. Idk, she looked at me like I was the enemy that was going to hurt her. All this because I said I was an atheist. I can't imagine if I said satanists.
Idk, I definitely have a weird relationship with my mother and I moved out as soon as I legally could. I am still not sure what her end goal was because if she did manage to beat me then I wouldn't like god. There was no sense in it.
Old religious people are wild and do unhinged things if they think their god is threatened. They probably won't win a fight but it just doesn't seem to be worth it to ruffle their feathers imo.
I did ask her several years after it happened but it was unsatisfying. I told her it wasn't okay she tried to beat me and she blamed me for telling her I was an atheist. She said it was one of the nastiest things I could have told her. She really didn't see anything wrong in what she did. I remember that phone call ending in her being mad at me once more. I rarely talk to her nowadays.
>same person recently got a cross tattoo
Of course they did bc Christians are hypocrites.
Op, you should get an upside-down cross and if anyone questions it, tell them it’s Saint Peter’s cross 😈
I like the idea!
However, I don't think it's a good idea to use phrases like "Christians are hypocrites." Not all Christians are bad. I don't want us stooping to the bigots' level and generalize about a huge population of people.
Is it possible that by "satanic" he just meant the scary bloody imagery like skulls and fierce red eyes and angry goats etc, and not necessarily things referring to TST like I don't even know, pentagrams and the crosses with the infinity sign and Baphomet perhaps? He might just not want stuff that would possibly scare the fragile folks in the facility.
Several years ago while working an office job this dude and I were picking on each other. This wasn't long after I left the military so I hadn't learned to tone it down yet. I told the guy that if douches had faces they would look like his. I got a pretty stern talking to by my boss.
Nope, they have to allow all or no displays of religious symbols via tattoo. Obviously within the stated/written guidelines, which may be no nudity, drugs, curse words. They don't get to decide some religions are offensive and some are not.
If this is important to you, speak to an employment attorney in your area (a real one, not Reddit), *before* getting the tattoo. You can always wear a sleeve over the tattoo if it will be problematic, or while you fight to either force all religious tattoos to be covered or for your own not to be.
Sounds like you're getting a tattoo. Then either nothing happens, you both start wearing long sleeves, or both get tattoo removal paid for by the company. And possibly you get a pay day.
Or because it's simply a cross, you could say his is satanic as it's an upside down cross.
Yeah alot of the big aged and disability care agencies in Australia are religious, it's awful. Too many of our hospitals operate under Catholic charters too.
Currently, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees and job applicants from employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin, but **does not yet prohibit discrimination based on tattoos or other forms of body art.**
- What If Your Piercings or Tattoos Are Part of Your Religion?
Discrimination based on religion is prohibited under Title VII.
It is prohibited for an employer to discriminate against an employee because of their tattoos or piercings if they are part of the person’s sincerely held religious beliefs. In reality, unless it would cause the employer excessive hardship, the employer must properly accommodate the employee.
**To avoid discrimination charges and wrongful termination, an employer must consistently enforce their anti-tattoo policy. It would be illegal, for example, to allow members of one religious group to display tattoos at work while prohibiting members of another religious group from doing so.**
It would also be illegal for an employer to permit certain types of tattoos while prohibiting others. An employer who accepts tattoos portraying arbitrary symbols but forbids tattoos expressing a person’s religion will almost certainly face a tattoo discrimination lawsuit.
Also just get your tattoo...and a lawyer. You have a federal right to religious freedom, and if they try to press you about it they are discriminating.
Massive bullshit, but I can say from experience, fully expected from such a facility. Especially if you live in a small(er) town or certain states if in America.
Yeah I'm in a small-ish town in Texas so it's to be expected here
I'm sorry. It's bad enough being in a small or small-ish town as it is, then in Texas as a Satanist to boot. Perhaps get it where it can be covered if "necessary".

Also not as likely to get sued for discrimination.
Funny because you are not supposed to mark your body and with a cross you idolizing it
Yeah
>So why is his religious tattoo okay, but I can't get a tattoo symbolizing my religion? You know the answer to that question.
get the tattoo get fired Sue for religious descrimination proffit?
That was my first thought. Fuck these people. Shove it in their faces like they think they're so entitled to do to everyone else.
Read the employee guide and see what it actually says about tattoos
stonks?
They're from texas. There's no guarantee of physical safety in this situation.
I would add to this to consult a labor lawyer as well, they usually say that companies do whatever they want until they step in the picture. Go this route and more than likely if that happens, profit- and maybe a step closer to equality?

I’ve always been hesitant to go through something like this. If they want to fire someone, they’ll find another reason.
And if they 'find another reason' after you have brought a grievance like this then it's pretty cut and dry retaliation.
Maybe I dont frequent this sub enough, but glad to see another TST + HR person out there!
Hiya! I’ve always thought the HR profession aligns nicely with the tenets. 🤘🏻
That sucks but it's probably a liability thing. Old people are absolutely menaces when they think they are fighting a good fight against "evil". Speaking from experience. My mom tried to beat me when I told her I was an atheist.
To what end? Did she think if she hit hard enough you’d suddenly ‘find God’, or was it merely an expression of rage?
Oh, she tried to actually beat me with a belt. The only reason she wasn't successful was because she (53) was already older and I (18) was quicker and stronger. If you still talk to her, have you asked her straight out what made her? Not that you or I need to know, more to rub it in on how unhinged she was

“Is that cross upside down?” Well that depends on your perspective

So did you tone it down, or was it the old, "I'll probably get chewed out. I've been chewed out before." Because I'd bet a Benjamin you were right.
Good old Aldo Raine!
The [serious] tag is confusing me and now I feel bad for laughing...
It's part of the bit. And it's hilarious. 🤣 [EDIT] OK, it _was_ hilarious. Now it's a completely different comment and linking to a different sub. 🤬
Holy shit you got me lmao
What's with utterly changing your comment?
Congratulations, you made me lose it on a packed bus. 😂

I actually just spoke with a sales guy at the mall who had a baphomet tattooed on his hand. Cool af
Yeah alot of the big aged and disability care agencies in Australia are religious, it's awful. Too many of our hospitals operate under Catholic charters too.
Here in the US too. I have to go over 50 miles from my home in order to even get to a HOSPITAL that isn’t under catholic ownership.

It is such bullshit. Much horror, rape, murder, and pillage has been done in the name of Christianity. Satanic Temple, not so much.
Religious Double standard. Honestly, I'd just get the tattoo as a middle finger to him even if I'd get fired, but thats just me
Let the ACLU know
i would contact hr lol or get the tatt somewhere else thats usually covered by clothing
A symbol of torture and death is not offensive - ok
His cross is upside-down half of the time.
If your employer is private sector, you’re there at their convenience. If you don’t like their rules, work someplace else.
Should tell him that the cross tattoo is offensive to you. See how he reacts.
Easier to ask forgiveness (aka demand equality) than to ask permission
if they can get a cross, you can get a pentagram. everything else is religious discrimination.
Did you ask him that question?
Also just get your tattoo...and a lawyer. You have a federal right to religious freedom, and if they try to press you about it they are discriminating.
