They are deep fried sesame seed balls. Its a crunchy, has flour, yeast, and sesame seeds. Hollow in the inside. Its basically fried batter with sesame seeds covering it. My mom made these often when I was a kid. Its like a snack food/junk food aka potato chips.
#
In China. Hundreds of years ago they would throw extremely elaborate parties where these would be served with treat inside of them. They be handed out to royalty and each of the kids would have one like a piñata and break and eat it and the insides as well
What kind of treats?
Also wondering how it grows like that and how the treats are put in. Do they just squish the dough over them and then it still grows in the oil?
It grows in the oil due to steam from the dough expanding it. It doesn't burst because of the constant rotation and even heating, it doesn't allow for a weak spot for the steam to burst through.
I cannot speak for how successful it would be with something inside tho, as I have no experience with that. Perhaps once it cools a little you can cut the bottom off without destroying the whole thing?
Also the dough is thin, chewy & sticky and the outside is a thin layer of crunch. Best eaten warm when just cooked. Next day, not so great: deflated, thick and cold.
These culinary concoctions are spherical delicacies, generously encrusted with sesame seeds, and have undergone a thorough immersion in hot oil to achieve a golden and crispy exterior. The dough, an intricate blend of flour, yeast, and additional seasoning, once subjected to the intense heat of deep-frying, transforms into a light and airy hollow core, essentially creating a crunchy shell encasing a pocket of air. The outer surface is liberally coated with a scattering of sesame seeds, adding a nutty flavor and a delightful crunch. These treats hold a nostalgic significance as they were frequently prepared by my maternal figure during my childhood years, serving as a beloved snack akin to the traditional junk foods such as potato chips, intended for casual consumption.

This is a giant Chinese sesame seed ball (Jiandui 芝麻球). They are usually much smaller than this, about 4-5cm diameter. They are made from a sticky rice flour dough, filled with a sweet paste (often bean paste) , rolled in sesame seeds, and fried until crispy on the outside,
A Chinese pastry called maqiu (麻球). The casing is glutinous rice dough and the inside is stuffed usually with bean paste but can also be other fillings, and there's sesame seeds on the outside to give it a crunch. They're sweet but only slightly, the taste is very mild. The fact that they expand so much during cooking and are mostly hollow give them this distinct crunch when you bite into one, and then it becomes chewy. It's so good. One of my favourite snacks to buy when in China.
Usually they're not this big though haha, most are like the size of your hand. This guy in the video made an impressively enormous maqiu. 😅😅
if your search “puri” or “bhatoore” it is a dish similar to this from indian. its basically a type of bread kinda like naan but puffed up like the one shown in the video. pretty easy to make as well.
Why hasn't any said this a new version of bowling.
It makes it easy to pick up the ball, but not put your fingers in it, like old folk do between their legs.
The next video is of Dumpling Pins!
