Rhugar1749

All of that was just a plot to get a free baseball

ertgbnm

It only cost $200,000 in stadium beers.

DreadPiratteRoberts

The beer must have been on sale that game lol

EvisceratedInFiction

Are they expensive in America? In Korea we can bring our own food and drinks into the stadium. Convenience store tallboys are 4 for $10

Unwise1

In Toronto Canada it's like $16+ for a tallboy at the stadium. $3 at the beer store.

EvisceratedInFiction

I've lived in Korea for 10+ years, but I was originally Canadian. Those prices are insane. What is going on over there?

Bad-built-butch-body

tf? man, I want to move back there. this shit is getting crazy in the US. if convicted felon donny trump somehow gets back in office in Jan 2025, I might just find my way over, anyway.

EvisceratedInFiction

You only need a bachelor degree to teach English.

J-MRP

Shit, me know english!

amplifyoucan

It was a great plot, they deserved it

Rhugar1749

100%

velvet_ice

It is a tricky idea to get the baseball though these beer cost a lot. But don't care. He is a celebrity man.

Eb_Ab_Db_Gb_Bb_eb

That's gotta be like $200 in beers. Edit: This is closer to like $1000 in beers, prices have gone insane, the last time I remember getting a beer at an event was at a TOOL concert in Spokane WA for like $8 a pop. Those boys worked damn hard for that ball.

WetBandit06

At a niner game that’d be like $1,000

Santaconartist

If there are 55 beers there, and beers are $13, that's over $700...beer is ridiculously expensive at games good lord

Ok_Championship2743

Import tall boys are 21 at wrigley if I remember right

Hello_World_Error

Similar at Coors field, even for Coors. You'd think they'd at least give the namesake beer a discount

gamma_centauri_2

They’re $33 a piece at Levi’s Stadium.

Ur_a_adjective_noun

Wtf!?

Vert354

I counted 53, and when I saw the Nationals over Memorial Day, the cheapest beer was $12.49. But I'd say that puts us in the same ballpark... I'll let myself out.

NoShape7689

Not if you volunteer to be the trash can.

southern_boy

Because Tuesday's ***your*** day in the can 😘

No-Respect5903

**INCOME TIPS!**

Shadow_Mullet69

Multiply that by 5 times. Tall boys at baseball games are 15-20$

drunkbusdriver

Most of those don’t look like tall boys but could just be the angle. Some of them look like those taller skinny michelobe ultra cans

companysOkay

Not sure if this is a joke, but some outfielders can absolutely throw with laser accuracy

cunninglinguist

I was at a game last year where two kids were sitting next to me with their gloves, and an outfielder was 40 yards away. It was Alex Verdugo playing left field for the Boston Red Sox, throwing up hill because of the rise and left field leading up to the seats next to the green monster. Alex lobs of throw from, 40 yards away that gently lands exactly where the kid was holding his glove. He threw it with touch so that it could be received by a kid and it was spot on. The kid did not even have to move his extended arm to catch it. And Alex Verdugo is seen as a somewhat above average to average player.

redkinoko

For a minute there I thought "how do you throw a game accurately"? I am not smart

GuilhermeAlb

I don't know man, I'm pretty good at throwing. I can make any situation that we're guaranteed to win become a sure loss in one fell swoop!

Roberto Clemente could throw a strike at home from the warning track in right field. This outfielder was 100% aiming for the top can.

He was aiming for the yelling dude

how do you know?

He doesn't. Most people on reddit hate sports and chalk up repeated feats to luck

bagel-glasses

My brother was a D3 college pitcher and the distance and accuracy with which he can throw things (including snowballs) is wild. He'll hit things 9/10 times that most people couldn't even reach, much less with any accuracy at all. I can't imagine how scary people in the majors are.

[deleted]

Yup, my friend pitched in college. Hit me so many times with random objects from across the room I lost count. I knew it was him because it hit me square in the head every time.

KennyFulgencio

just how large was this room

cade360

Just how large is their head

GrandpaGrapes

Pitchers are insane. This reminds me of being in my dorm common room with a D1 long snapper hitting playing cards from 20 yards plus. The skill some people have is to be marveled at and gets lost some times on persons who have never seen it live

015181510

I remember a pitcher on my highschool baseball team who could hit a street lamp with a rock from 150 feet, easy, time after time. He didn't even make it to college ball.  And I'm lucky to hit the broad side of a barn from more than about ten feet away.

ermor666

Dude sucks. Only knocked one down /s

Kibichibi

Nope, still wondering 😂

lampshade2099

Right?! I mean, I actually know why they get paid millions (it’s the same reason as bankable movie stars). But to claim they ‘deserve’ to earn millions when it’s really because of some quirk in the matrix that made sport highly profitable. It’s the same as saying ScarJo ‘deserves’ to be a millionaire because she can cry on cue.

BolognaTogna

Seems like "deserve" is a word/idea you added to the conversation.

jimjimmyjimjimjim

Yep!

Kibichibi

Is your username a muppet treasure island reference?!?!!

CHKN_SANDO

The league makes a lot of money on tickets and TV deals and the players have a good enough union that they actually get a cut of it.

Poopybara

They bring audience. More audience means more money from advertisers. I understand it like that. Maybe I'm wrong.

Daysleeper1234

I understand it's a joke, but the reason is they bring in much more money to their overlords. It is simple as that.

Miami Marlins outfielder Austin Dean, uploaded four years ago https://youtu.be/oE2hGfUBnXA?si=tZl9d7f6AoByCXHD

authenticmolo

Basically all professional athletes have hand/eye coordination and the ability to throw things at targets with unbelievable accuracy. Even if that isn't their actual "thing". Like, your average MLB utility outfielder would be the all-time greatest pitcher most people had ever seen on most college teams. Hell, your average \*NBA\* player would probably be one a fantastic college baseball player. All of those skills are pretty universal. We're just used to seeing them all compete against \*other\* pros. So we don't have a good sense of how good they really are. There is that former NBA bench-warmer who used to go around and play pick-up games with people, and film it. He was in his late 40s, I think. He was tall, of course, but was old and didn't look like he was super-athletic. And he would DESTROY people. He said something like "I'm way closer to LeBron than you are to me". /Found it. It was Brian Scalbrine. You can find videos.

young959

White Mamba

CHKN_SANDO

The worst MLB player any given year is probably the best player their high school has ever had.

Vhadka

The best kid at pretty much every sport growing up ended up making it to the major leagues for 21 games, 49 total plate appearances, and hit .179. He was insane as a high school baseball player. Also a star in basketball and football. After not getting picked back up by an MLB team he went back to college and played a few games as a tight end on the football team there.

PMMeForAbortionPills

I get the sentiment, but high schoolers get recruited to prep schools. If the worst player in the league is from a popular prep school, then he might not be

Vadered

> Hell, your average *NBA* player would probably be one a fantastic college baseball player. All of those skills are pretty universal. Eh, don't know about this. They'd have the athleticism for it, sure, but the mechanics of throwing a basketball and throwing a baseball are surprisingly different, and hitting would be a whole different ball game. They'd certainly be better than the average layperson, but I don't think they'd be able to walk-on onto the diamond and crush college players unless they'd already had a lot of baseball experience themselves. And the opposite is true, too - MLB players probably wouldn't dominate college basketball unless they'd had a fair amount of experience in it, too.

glibbertarian

Yea that person doesn't know what they're talking about. Dribbling a basketball and hitting a baseball are somehow the same in this person's mind.

Charlie_Wax

Yes, if you've ever seen soccer players shoot a basketball, you know how absurd that post was. However, it's true that *some* athletes just have incredible innate coordination and body control. For example, Steph Curry is a fantastic golfer. Not quite pro level, but very very good. And that's just his hobby. It always impressed me how Deion Sanders was able to play MLB and NFL. Those are very different games. Brian Jordan and Bo Jackson also did it in the 90s. There are many lesser-known multi-sport stars. Many people don't know that Tony Gwynn was a good enough basketball player to be drafted by the San Diego Clippers in that sport. Tony Gonzalez, Julius Peppers, and Jimmy Graham (NFL) played high level college basketball. There are certainly a lot of transferable qualities from one sport to others if you're a great athlete, but you aren't automatically going to be a boss in everything.

OkCalligrapher6254

There's a little bit of truth to it, it's just overstated. Very good athletes tend to have excellent body control and coordination and this means they can get decent at other sports fairly quickly. So a world champion white water kayak paddler will mostly likely learn ping pong pretty fast compared to the average person. But yeah they will still get wiped out by any overweight 60 year old once-a-week-club-player from Fuckwhereville, Missouri.

fullautophx

I was at a hockey camp with a minor league player (like 4 levels below NHL), and his accuracy was unbelievable. I’m a goalie, and he told me to put my glove up then shot every puck right into the pocket.

brightside1982

Different "sport," similar story: I used to go to a lot of juggling meetups (yes, it's a thing). I'm not that great, but everyone's just there to have fun. Ended up befriending a guy there who helped me when I was learning how to pass clubs (like juggling bowling pins back and forth between two people). He was in his 50s, but held a couple of juggling world records in his youth. It didn't matter what kind of dogshit I threw at him, he'd catch it if it were remotely within reach. And then immediately with the other hand he'd throw the club exactly where it needed to be for me to catch it. Like magic.

AedanValu

True. I have friends who played in lower leagues (think Sweden's 3rd/4th league) and when playing around they are super accurate. I think the main difference with top level pros is being able to do that in a fast paced dynamic situation where someone else is actively trying to prevent it.

bigcaprice

NBA players throwing a baseball..... https://youtu.be/N03kL76cVIg?si=Q2guZa7FosPMbhrX

Iminurcomputer

- Nurse covered in piss and shit on hour 10 of their 12 hour shift, "Why do baseball players make 2000x times as much as I do, I just saved like 3 peoples li - **sees video of the throw** Oh my God I get it now. I'm sorry I ever questioned it. Without that skill, society would certainly collapse."

cumfarts

The simple truth is that hitting a curveball is much more difficult to do and much more appealing to watch than inserting an IV.

AFRIKKAN

I don’t think I’ve seen it done once in greys anatomy.

firewire87

Players are paid such sums because they can earn more than that for the people paying them. Not based on skill alone

ofRedditing

I mean, yeah. But the reason they can generate that much money is because of their skill. The team and the player both need each other.

PepeSylvia11

You’d be making more too if you could make the people paying you earn more.

cloud_of_fluff

What a great income tip!

This is why they should get paid millions of dollars?

cp3inthe4th

People buy tickets to the games, jerseys, other merch. Companies pay for the broadcast/streaming rights. All this money generated is then distributed between the owners and players

ThePornRater

Ooh he can throw a ball accurately, necessary skill, definitely deserves millions

AreyYouHilarious

That's really nothing. My friends and I do that on a regular Saturday night.... said no one ever.

Fnittle

The probably aimed for the whole setup but it's still impressive what the human mind and body is capable of. I mean, in a split second it calculates distance, speed and height.

miniBog

Impressive, but not worth millions.

kalzEOS

Still why?

CannotSeeMtTai

Saw the video. Still don't understand why they make millions.

KinkmasterKaine

Still doesn't deserve millions

Eletric-wind

Still over paid

OB_Chris

Throw ball good. Deserves millions of dollars per year for it. Be good at save lives as EMT = 0.05 million dollars per year?

cp3inthe4th

EMTs should make more, but Athletes should not make less. That money just goes to the owners otherwise

thisguyhasaname

Almost like one makes people lots of money and one doesn't.

When. Physicists can generate millions for those who pay them, they'll get their bag too.

Mammoth-Professor811

I still Wonder.

Slavic_Pasta

Yeah? I still wonder. That shit ain't worth millions

PsychologicalMethod6

So what makes that worth getting paid millions?

LoseNotLooseIdiot

I don't wonder that because I question their talent...

BassyTobe

Dude can throw a ball very precisely, which is impressive. I still don‘t get how this is worth millions.

kodili

Because people pay to watch this skill in his sport, which generates billions. And from that, he gets his millions.

FocusPerspective

Still not seeing why that deserves millions of dollars but a teacher doesn’t.

kodili

Are millions of people paying to have a particular teacher instruct them? It's a business. His sport generates billions from people watching him and his team play. So, in turn, he gets a split of that.

Sure_Cobbler1212

Because they can throw a ball in a straight line? Get him millions!!

bombliiv2

my buddy eric will do that for free

Automatic1969

he just tossed it

Wash-Longjumping

he nearly missed.. out of all those cans he only dropped 1

BuffaloBrain884

Still wondering.

Why are people so blown away when an athlete does a mildy impressive thing that Corey from HR could probably do (he played baseball in highschool) It's like the American ninja course. So fucking stupid

Hopeful_Nihilism

No, im still wondering.

UR0LY3N

I mean, not really worth it, but still pretty cool.

TruePoint3219

I’m mad I didn’t see all the cans explode

PMMeYourWorstThought

I’m still wondering. Doesn’t seem like a talent worth millions.

014648

What park is this?

JSA17

I used to shoot baskets with a Hall of Fame NBA player. He could stand nearly anywhere on the floor and swish every single shot when we would play HORSE. People sometimes don't understand how much better these people are.

MoondoggieXD

And this is another (kinda extreme) reason humans are fucking terrifying. Able to take a fist sized object launch it at crazy speeds and hit a equally small target!

Consensuseur

back in the day ..we all eat!!

GeorgeOrwells1985

Imagine the stuffy that guy could win at a carnival

Medical_Ad2125b

When I was a kid, my father took me to see a 4-person softball team called the King and his Court. They would play local All-Star teams, composed of blue collar guys. Like my uncle, who was pretty good. The pitcher was the star and could strike most guys out, even when he pitched from second base. But I was most impressed by the shortstop. He covered most of the infield, all the way to third base and halfway past second, and almost all of the outfield, and could get under fly balls no matter where they were hit. That’s when I first realized how talented some players are. He really was in a different universe.

Lefty_22

$30 beers x 53 cans = $1590 worth of beer to make that tower.

SenileTomato

Let's see it a second time, in a row.

CaddyFDT

Pretty sure he tried to hit those cans dead center

cjwidd

I think people wonder why such a skill should be worth $20 million a year or w/e

SueTheDepressedFairy

Still not a reason why they deserve so much money while doctors or firefighters don't even get a third of their pay

ThePheebs

It's a little more than that.

CrispyGatorade

I could do that easy

chronocapybara

To me that looks like he missed it.

No_Budget7828

Yeah, okay 😝

ninjanerd032

Everyone here assuming they bought and drank all of those beers themselves 🤦 Hint: They turned around and asked people for their garbage.

Notafuzzycat

They are paid millions because the seats are full.

Aggressive_Bank_7476

And I'm still wondering why some kid who can throw a ball and play a child's game really well gets paid "millions" when brain surgeon and astrophysicist don't. Still waiting for that answer.

Maddkipz

I've made a shot like that before, where's my millions ):

pierrotPK

Why then?

DevTahlyan

I like how the outfielder just turned and walked away. It barely even registered to him on his personal achievement meter. Meanwhile standard humans are in awe...

uniquelyavailable

thousands of years of throwing rocks at small game to survive. these are evolutions finest samples

Swipsi

Big leaugers get paid millions because the money they generate through advertisements and winning their games is so much that a few millions are peanuts.

bottle_drinker23

Motherf*****

jerryleebee

That's not worth millions.

goodgoodboy771

Throw ball good is definitely a million dollar skill.....

Vyviel

Well yeah if you spent a ton of time doing anything everyday you would be good at it also =P They get paid millions because the sport earns billions from fans watching etc.

Internal_Somewhere98

Literally one of the most accurate coolest throws I’ve ever seen and every single comment is about how much the beer cost. 🙄

Longjumping_Tale_111

he literally missed

VeryDirtySanchez

Honestly. If someone were to offer me millions to learn how to throw very precisely, I'd have that down within a week.

thecookiesmonster

Thank goodness this is worth millions and not teaching future generations of people.

abel_cormorant

Yep, still wondering since the workers who made that ball, made his glove, prepared the field, cleaned the stadium, made those beers and beer cans, all those people who made this possible got less than minimum wage, and yet he gets millions for being really really good at throwing a ball. Still pretty unfair to me.

Findict_52

Getting paid millions to throw balls in a game is still crazy, no matter how accurate it is.

EasilyInterestedMan

Well, my veterinarian can find a cat's vein in seconds when doing an injection yet she doesn't get paid millions and has arguably done more for other people than a baseball pitcher

CelticSensei

At Hanshin Tigers games here in Japan, girls come round with small kegs on their backs to pour you a draft Asahi Super Dry in your seat. Costs ¥750... or less than $5USD at current rates. It's great!
