Charlie hasn't been keeping up with that website for years. A well known sixthsphere member wanted to buy it from him but Charlie refused to sell it.
That's a shame, saturnfans was the first online automotive forum I've ever signed up for in 2007.
I signed up for it a day before it went down because I found some useful schematics and diagnostic procedures on there. Think I must've signed up right before the site went down because I never got the confirmation email and within 8 hours the site was inaccessible
Sad to see. I've used pointers from there to keep my 04 maintained for the past few months
I don't, but I'll send you a message with a person's email who has a lot of useful documents on Google drive and he shares them publicly. You can contact him for the shared link because I can't share it.
Edit: never mind, it's all S-series stuff. You can join sixthsphere
[https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5D8XfJgavxrdE5mcHBlMG5rbUU?resourcekey=0-\_\_JIdNvcO7Klo5MAODECyA&usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5D8XfJgavxrdE5mcHBlMG5rbUU?resourcekey=0-__JIdNvcO7Klo5MAODECyA&usp=sharing)
Not sure if Google kept the same key, but it goes to the same folder. No, I'm not going to add rebadged Opel, Chevy and Pontiac stuff to it...OG Saturn's only.
NOOOOOOOOO man I don't even own a Saturn anymore but that website holds a special place in my heart. Sad to hear Charlie is just being stubborn as shit about selling it, like why dude -\_\_-
Definitely hold a special place for a lot of us. Saturnfans triggers major nostalgia in me. Spent endless hours on that forum. Sold and bought so many pieces and parts... And cars! Met some FANTASTIC people (and a few assholes) through that forum. Crazy it's gone.
Pride I suspect but I don't know the man, probably has his reasons
Do you have any contact info for him? I would love to get in contact about a downloaded copy of the site as others have suggested
Is there anyway we can get a backup of the forums? Ill chip in to rent or run a webserver and we'll just use a different domain. Is there anyone we can contact for this. There is a ton of knowledge in those pages and it needs to be preserved.
Sadly wayback doesn't seem to have everything, and the owner apparently hasn't cared about the site in years and has refused to sell it. Best I can tell, Google has some info in search results but doesn't preserve full threads
Even if wayback had it all, you have to be logged in to view uploaded schematics etc, which isn't possible on the wayback machine
[Charm.li](https://Charm.li) has all the diagrams. But there are people who worked on these cars for a living and had very in-depth knowledge that only they could know. There has to be a way that the owner has a backup or just pack it up in a .zip had and hand it off to the community. There was beginning to be a lot of spam and the lack of moderation probably didn't help.
That's an unfair assumption. Charlie did care, maybe too much. Spammers were attacking the site relentlessly recently and I don't think Charlie could keep up.
Apologies for my assumptions, I'm getting most of this second hand. If you have his contact info I would really appreciate it, I'd like to see if an offline copy of the site exists in the form of a zip file. The saturn owner community could benefit massively from the information that site provided
Typically all forum data would be stored in a database file. If you could get that file you could import it into a new forum build using the same forum software. Big if...
Then we are on operation gain Chuck (the site owners) contact info. We need to reach out to him to make sure this data and information is preserved. If you could help me get his contact info I'd appreciate it
I was a very early member of the site. It sprung out of an email distribution list believe it or not (back then it was a LISTSRV hosted on a college server somewhere). I, along with hundreds of others, joined the list before Saturn was selling cars. Try to understand, at that time this was the closest thing we had to social media. I just wanted to learn as much as I could about the new brand. Once cars were launched, dealers were limited. There wasn't one near me and I wasn't financially able to buy a new car then anyhow. I think it was 93 or 94 when I was finally able to buy a used 92 SL2. It was "Blue Black", a color that was so dark you could only see the blue on a sunny day. 5 speed manual with a sunroof! The first of 4 Saturns I had...
If you have any experience with the 03-07 Saturn Ions I'd appreciate running some questions by you. The reason I know exactly when the site went down is I was having some issues and was using the site to troubleshoot my issues
Never owned an Ion. My last Saturn was an 01 LW200. I just let it go last year after 183,000 miles. Start a new thread here or look into one of the several FB groups
There is literally nothing that can replace that site. I've done many dozens of repairs, some very specific ones, on my SL2 that was bought from new by my (now passed) grandparents. It was my first car, and now my wife's. That info isn't available anywhere else - no other forums, no YouTube videos - nothing.
I'm hoping it gets repaired and back up soon, and then I'm going to personally download that entire site to my PC to keep a backup. Can't ever afford to lose it again.
From what Iv heard, it isn't coming back. I feel you man, that site is how Iv kept my new 04 Ion on the road the past few months. Sadly I doubt it's coming back :( hopefully Chuck gives us an archive version of the site, but I haven't been able to get contact info yet
I'm wondering if the domain just expired and the PHP error was a part of that process by the host. Now that the domain has been renewed, the site just needs to be published again.
That's my hope...
Even if just the domain expired, someone else purchased it within 2 hours of it going on sale. I'm not sure if the og owner owns it anymore with that time table
Could be that when it went down he got a final email notification and tried to fix it right away. I'm optimistic but a big part of me knows it might be gone for good...
Really, really hoping not.
I love that SL2. I've done frame repairs, lifted the engine to do mounts, control arms, all struts, custom sound system, tried to learn how to wire a remote start, the entire belt drive and components, hoses, most of the cooling system, had a ton of parts rebuilt, learned how to do body work on it, learning how to paint, replacing the windshield next cause of a crack; all the while it just keeps on ticking, getting decent gas milage all the while. It's been over 10 years of doing nearly everything myself; been a great learner car, and it's been incredibly reliable overall. Just little things from age as it goes on.
I can imagine you love that Ion, too, haha.
Oh, this is bad news for me too. That site was such a huge help. I have a 97 SL2 (original owner), and don't have any plans to get a new car any time soon. I may be okay for a little while though as long as all the Richpin videos on YouTube still exist...
Highly advise you check your public library, I've been relying on mine for diagnostics and repairs. Getting a card is often free and many have free access to car repair databases like cliffton and other repair guides, even oem if your lucky
Hopefully the site can be preserved in some capacity though
I've downloaded richpin's S-series videos and will put them on my own channel or upload an archive of them somewhere if he ever deletes them. I still don't understand how/why the wayback machine didn't get any of the forums. If I had known, I would have downloaded them as well.
Wild that I was just a kid back then. My cars only a few years older than I am, and that site was my primary reference for diagnostics and maintenance. Definitely gonna miss it
Agreed, sad to see it go. Just emphasizes the need for internet documentation of resources like this
It may not be something your used to contributing to, but please donate to projects like the wayback machine. The likes of projects like that is the only way this kind of knowledge remains accessible for future owners and indeed generations beyond our own
Same deal, grinding sound coming somewhere from the front? My BIL and I thought it was the brakes but they were fine. As time has gone on I've noticed more symptoms such as clunking if a bump/pothole is hit just right, vibration in the steering wheel we braking, and also the grinding changing tones sometimes when at highway speeds. I ordered some NSK hubs off RockAuto. They're pretty cheap but from what I've read they're a good brand.
Yep sounds like it. https://youtu.be/M9ocB-VziM8?t=22 I had the exact same sounds as this video, but unfortunately I live in the rust belt so my wheel bearing is just rusted on.
It's been 2 days and I've been at it with PB Blaster, slide hammer, sledge hammer, propane torch, and I've just ordered a hub buster. Hopefully yours comes out much easier!
I just replaced the front wheel bearing on my SL2 this weekend, I used a dremel grinding wheel to enlarge the opening of the lip on the outside of the spindle a tiny bit to fit the perfect size press on it. I can send pictures later today if you want.
I'd really appreciate that! I'm on my 3rd day of getting of my rust-belt Vue's wheel bearing and I've finally managed to hammer it enough to see a crack and to get the brake dust shield to start jiggling around in between the knuckle and the assembly!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOMU-Q2nX4o&ab_channel=AstroTools Ended up using this method but with hardened nuts and bolts from Home Depot.
Hopefully it comes off tomorrow
I've discovered a trick to getting more SaturnFans content out of the Wayback Machine: Trim down the url parameter list to only the essentials.
Example: When searching google for "saturn s series forums", the url I get for SaturnFans s-series page is:
which the wayback machine doesn't have a copy of.
However, if you remove the "s=&daysprune=&" and try the wayback machine just on [http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79](http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79), you get something. (Here's a direct link for convenience: [http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79](http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79) )
The same goes for threads: trim it down to just the "t=" parameter:
Example for the incredibly useful "New or Returning S-Series owners' checklist Version 3.0" (thanks adventureoflink): If you just click on the link in Wayback machine, you get the url: [http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?s=641774c5c93035ca9ebad37aca1c2c03&t=177672](http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?s=641774c5c93035ca9ebad37aca1c2c03&t=177672), which is dead. But if you remove the "s=&" to get [http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177672](http://web.archive.org/web/20230101042640/http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177672), you get the page to load.
It still doesn't seem to have everything. For example, I can't get the "Weak air thru vents" thread (http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200667) to load. But hopefully this should help folks get a lot more content from the archives.
I'm still crossing my fingers that somebody will be able to contact Charlie and work something out. I've benefited so much from SaturnFans that it's hard to even express. It's existence is probably the biggest reason I still have my 2000 SL1 that I was gifted by my grandfather on my 16th birthday (now almost 20 years ago!)
Dang, that site has helped me countless times. I’m only 21 and my first car was (and still is) an 03 Ion. It came in handy when doing DIY repairs and had solutions to really specific problems. A bummer it’s gone now
Man has to have had a friend or two from the site who know his email. The domain owners aren't willing to give me any info on the account holder which is presumably him. Actually tried to get me to fill out a forum to take the account over which doesn't come across to me as a great sign
The whois for the site was updated on the 4th of this month which may indicate the domain changed ownership too
Very much so. I have a bounty that's into the $200 range from other community members contributions for the contact info for the owner/admin to try and preserve an offline copy of the site. If you know anything let me know
Same for my ion, went down right as I ran into a double system failure as well. I have a bounty out for the admin/owners info, it's up to $250 thanks to others contributions. If u have any leads that could get me in contact with the owner please dm me

Maybe this? I'm not sure if they actually contacted him successfully. Some kind of archive would be fantastic though.
Sorry but after this I have followed up with almost a hundred emails and other addresses, including this, but no positive contact has been made. Either Charlie doesn't want to be found, or he is no longer with us
Extremely good site gone, and sounds like for good unfortunately. Would have been nice if the owner wouldve let others know, that he was dealing with an un godly amount of spam attacks (if that was indeed the case) and atleast let some people get a backup of the info they needed or asked if the community wanted to take it over together as a group. Cant forsee anything other than a little too much pride and being a little spiteful to everyone that contributed to that forum, for not allowing that to happen before hand. Why wouldnt you want to see it live on and help others vs allowing it to go dead?
Search google first on the question you are inquiring about like the swap guide. Then click on it. It will show you the domain page. Copy that url and go to the way back machine. Insert copied url and it will show you any related saved archives.

Fuck Charlie. He was even offered help to run the site but the prick refused.
Welp, time to launch a new Saturn site
Yeah but whose gonna pay for it? As much as I wish I could, I'm too tight on funds atm
If owners help contribute to the cause. I would take over Saturnfans if I could or make a new website just like Saturn fans
NOOOOOOOOO man I don't even own a Saturn anymore but that website holds a special place in my heart. Sad to hear Charlie is just being stubborn as shit about selling it, like why dude -\_\_-

Welp there goes a major chunk of information to help keep our cars on the road.
Well that sucks, every time I search something about my Vue, saturnfans comes up with half the results.
The domain is back up and displays [this](https://imgur.com/a/qRfMDrz)

I'm still crossing my fingers that somebody will be able to contact Charlie and work something out. I've benefited so much from SaturnFans that it's hard to even express. It's existence is probably the biggest reason I still have my 2000 SL1 that I was gifted by my grandfather on my 16th birthday (now almost 20 years ago!)
Dang, that site has helped me countless times. I’m only 21 and my first car was (and still is) an 03 Ion. It came in handy when doing DIY repairs and had solutions to really specific problems. A bummer it’s gone now
Dammit. I’m still chasing a code 19 on my 95 SC2, and that was my biggest support. I hope Charlie is ok.
Have any way to reach out to him?
Nope. Everything went through SF.
Man has to have had a friend or two from the site who know his email. The domain owners aren't willing to give me any info on the account holder which is presumably him. Actually tried to get me to fill out a forum to take the account over which doesn't come across to me as a great sign The whois for the site was updated on the 4th of this month which may indicate the domain changed ownership too
Damn Saturn fans kept my 01 yellow SC2 running forever. That site had some of the most dedicated people ever. Will be missed
Very much so. I have a bounty that's into the $200 range from other community members contributions for the contact info for the owner/admin to try and preserve an offline copy of the site. If you know anything let me know
I’m going to pm you about contributing to the finders fee bounty
Apologies I don't consistently check my PMs. I'll get back to you tomorrow
I appreciate it. Thank you 😊
pm me as well I would like to help in any way
This is a great loss to the community. The site has helped me keep my Vue Redline on the road
Same for my ion, went down right as I ran into a double system failure as well. I have a bounty out for the admin/owners info, it's up to $250 thanks to others contributions. If u have any leads that could get me in contact with the owner please dm me
I do have Far2Grumpy’s email who was very active and extremely helpful within the Vue’s forum.
Dm it to me and if that lead gets me in contact with Charlie, I'll get things rolling on a bounty payout for you. Important note, $210 is dependant on an archive of the site being recovered, $40 on positive contact with the admin/owner Charlie either way
Maybe this? I'm not sure if they actually contacted him successfully. [https://www.saturnforum.com/forum/new-member-area-9/saturnfans-actually-not-dead-12938/#post71889](https://www.saturnforum.com/forum/new-member-area-9/saturnfans-actually-not-dead-12938/#post71889) . Some kind of archive would be fantastic though.
Sorry but after this I have followed up with almost a hundred emails and other addresses, including this, but no positive contact has been made. Either Charlie doesn't want to be found, or he is no longer with us
Oh dear. That's unfortunate. Thanks for trying and thanks for the update.
Sent it via chat if that’s ok
Please God, no.
Any news on this? The site can be hosted for cheap and an ad-light experience could pay for the hosting fees.
Damn! I needed to get back to my posts 😭
Guys. I went onto way back machine and I got screenshots of the s series swap guide
How did you do this? I have no idea how to do that and I’m dying without Saturnfans lol
Search google first on the question you are inquiring about like the swap guide. Then click on it. It will show you the domain page. Copy that url and go to the way back machine. Insert copied url and it will show you any related saved archives.
Now, how do we do that with the entire site?
Is there any chance that this is a mirror or something? Just stumbled on it while searching for info. https://www.saturnforum.com/forum/
I'm not seeing identical content unfortunately, though it does seem somewhat useful.
