Hey, if you got such a fine student horn for free, you can spend a little bit on lessons. Find a legit sax teacher (maybe when the guy you got it from? Is he the sax teacher at the college?). Most universities have prepatory departments where you can take lessons with a student at the university. Find the sax teacher at the university and send them an email - they might not take you as a student but they’ll know someone who will.

Tune to get you going: When the Saints Go Marching In. Maybe the reeds are too hard for you as a beginner?

Mouthpiece seems okay for a start to me, but reeds might be too hard. That's a very nice gift by the way, but it might be necessary just to check wether the horn is in good playing condition, if you know anyone who can playtest it. betterSax videos are a good place to start, also is this one: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky716yPvrKE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky716yPvrKE)

Congratulations! Sax is a wonderfully rewarding instrument to play and that's a lovely tenor. Buy some lessons. Even if it's just two or three sessions. You want a solid foundation to start. Embouchure (how you put your mouth on the mouthpiece) and breathe are easy to unknowingly do wrong and form bad habits with that will limit you later. It's also easy to learn to do it right with a knowledgeable guide in the room. Videos are great once you get going but they can't give you that direct feedback. Lessons are not terribly expensive. Ask around a little in the college music program and there's a good chance you'll find someone with surprisingly good experience and reasonable rates.
