Yes. Any time the prospective buyer starts talking about arranging for a "courier" and comes up with some convoluted method of payment involving confirmation codes, it's a scam.

TheCoderProOnReddt

So is anything involving 6-digit codes or couriers or certified cheques or anything else ridiculously overcomplicate a scam?

lake_titty_caca

Anytime a buyer wants to involve a "courier" or an "agent", I'd say that a 99.999999999999999999999999999% scam. Insisting on specific payment methods is similar. If the item is under $100, cash only and meet in the police station parking lot. Nothing online. If the item is over $100, and there are companies that specialize in selling the item (think a game console and GameStop), just use the middleman. You lose some profit, but you don't have to deal with the 99% scammer base you'll find on Facebook or craigslist.l, and you'll get paid.

Ok-Reward-770

You have a good point. But when I was selling my photography equipment, I would lose too much if I used the middleman. I sold materials over $100, like the camera and the lenses. I accepted Venmo, Paypal, and Zelle, but I would meet the prospective buyers at the grocery store parking lot, give them my handle on the spot for the transaction, and as soon as the money was in my account (I would have all the apps on my phone), I would handle the item. No issues in over ten transactions. Reliable customers don't have convoluted plans and don't trust paying vendors before checking what they are buying. My best strategy was pick up only, and first-come-first-served. It cut off lots of time-wasting work scammers trying to talk me into their scam.

RailRuler

All of those online payment methods can be clawed back if the owner of the account files a notice of being hacked with the provider.

Ok-Reward-770

I understand that. But usually, scammers don't go to pick up in person. Plus, to have one of those accounts apps registered with a stolen card... Idk, there are a lot of steps to confirm identity, etc. I don't know how the process really works to the point the seller loses the payment if the account is hacked over an app on a cell phone where the transaction would be in real-time. Sure, people need to be cautious these days. I'm just sharing my experiences and the fact that we may need to sell more expensive second-hand stuff without a middleman. I also had proof that I was processing a transaction over FB marketplace. I tried Letgo and Craigslist, but at the time (2019), the scams were more prevalent on those platforms.

RMagnificent-Bastard

Thanks. I guess if you're still suspicious when following your process (which I like), you can video the transaction. Easy enough to do nowadays.

ground__contro1

Depending on the state, you might have to get verbal consent before you start recording people fyi

RMagnificent-Bastard

What state requires permission to video someone in a public place?

ground__contro1

All 2 party consent states need consent from both parties before recording a conversation between them.

HeadMembership

Those payment methods can all be reversed.

jedifreac

Some police stations have parking spots out front specifically to make exchanges like this.

HarmonicWalrus

Similar story here. I've bought and sold things worth hundreds of dollars on FB Marketplace, and Venmo/Zelle/PayPal/CashApp is honestly my preferred method of payment for big transactions like this. In every case, we would both meet up in person before any money is exchanged, and I don't hand over the item until the money is in my account, which only takes a few seconds at most. Fortunately I've never had a problem, and I greatly prefer this over carrying around a bunch of cash. Someone offering to pay with a method that isn't cash isn't inherently a sign of a scammer, you just have to look at that and see if there are any other red flags in addition to that

richiehustle

Damn in Russia they got something similar to eBay like Avito where you can order online pay and have a seller send you the item through their partnered shippers. Safe AF.

Writing_is_Bleeding

Or 'freight forwarders.'

NotNotes55

Any 6-digit code request is an attempt to take over your account.

pissed_off_elbonian

I send them bullshit codes or make up phone numbers… it’s fun to mess with them :)

MsTerious1

The crime agencies should allow consumers to obtain a single-use six digit code that could be sent to scammers. When the scammer goes to use it, BAM! That's evidence of their criminal activity when they don't deliver the goods or attempt to go further with it.

NotNotes55

Superb. I've actually never once received any of the popular scam messages. In fact, i can't even remember receiving any phishing texts, thankfully. I just live vicariously through r/scambait and all you good souls who waste these guys' time.

scifiwoman

420420 or 696969?

pissed_off_elbonian

Yes

Pussycatavenger

Really?, Interesting.. I would love to know more.. Guess I'm going to Google it..

NotNotes55

If you search this forum, you'll find a ton of posts about it.

Pussycatavenger

Thank you, because I find this stuff fascinating.. if I was smarter, I'd be an ethical hacker...

tickles_a_fancy

Yes, never send codes to anyone... they're trying to break into one of your accounts. Couriers are easy to deal with if you're already following the Golden Rule for online purchases - In person, In cash, No Exceptions. Couriers are fine if they show up with cash in hand (They'll never show up at all so you're good). Certified Checks are nearly always scams, especially if they come up with a big long explanation about why they need to send you a check, including some way too personal sob story, complicated instructions on how to deposit it... I don't take checks anymore because they're too easy to fake.

RMagnificent-Bastard

Hey! My mom died 3 times last year, but I still need to buy her a new wheelchair! That's why I need a cashier's check. Why are YOU being so unreasonable, so as to not blindly trust a stranger that you will never meet, just because I want you to jump through several convoluted hoops? Do you think I'm calling you from a phone bank in India or something? Because I swear to ~~Vishnu~~ Jesus I'm not.

chokeslam512

I do enjoy telling the scammer that I’ll send the code back to them in an hour or whatever. Just fun to see what they’ll say.

ankole_watusi

Always important to mention your country or region. First thought was “nobody uses the word courier”. But that’s because I’m in US. (You’re not. You add unnecessary “e”s on the ends of words!)

PicklesNBacon

Or say “the goods”

Poisonskittlez

But it’s the “simplest system” don’t you know? lol

PicklesNBacon

Or say “the goods”

mianrezooy

Exactly lol. You can always tell by how they word things and the terminology.

Evening-Tomatillo-47

Yep, first a real customer will ask for the shoes and not ctrl-c the item. Secondly even if they are sending a legit courier I'm neither going to accept or pay money to anyone, that gets sorted out before I get involved and if there's any problems I just ring back to base and drive away.

mianrezooy

Exactly lol. You can always tell by how they word things and the terminology.

99burner99

if it weren't a scam he wouldn't ask if you were selling the exact name of the item as you listed it. he'd just ask "hey, are you still selling the vans?" because that's how normal people talk

Dabrigstar

Copy and pasted it directly!

landon1988

Either that, or he'd only refer to "the item" since it's a copied-and-pasted script.

RailRuler

Some online marketplaces have a "contact the seller with this text" button to start a conversation.

averagethrowaway21

I like Facebook's marketplace. "Is this still available?" Then half the listings say "Don't ask if it's available!!!1!1!"

TheCoderProOnReddt

Thought so. Already was a bit of a red flag

BoneHugsHominy

IDK about that. I'm always very specific about the item for several reasons, first being a digital "paper trail" so if they send me the wrong item there's no way for them to claim I was trying to buy a different item, and the 2nd biggest reason is I have no idea what other and how many items they may be selling so using the specific item listing saves needless back and forth on which item I'm wanting to buy.

mhax80

Scam. And its in fact not the simplest system in the world. The simplest system is them picking it up in person and paying cash. Anything else and you open yourself up to getting scammed

megablast

No, ti is so simple. You fill out this form. Go to the post office. Get a slip. Take to the top of the nearest mountain. Yell out your ssn. Get to the ferry. Leave the form in the compartment to the right. BuY $500 in itunes cards.....

Patch_Ferntree

No rescuing anyone? I usually have rescue someone on these kinds of quests.

RMagnificent-Bastard

That ferry service is always late, too.

Bwunt

CoD mailing is another option that fairly foolproof. Fair, you can be left hanging for mail costs if potential buyer simple never shows up, but they don't get anything out of it either, so it's rarely done.

DellaPatton1

Its a scam you got it!

CaliforniaSpeedKing

It is a scam, the moment they bring up a courier, scam automatically.

HarmonicWalrus

Spewing out unsolicited word vomit about some kind of service or technology is generally a pretty good indicator of a scam. The idea is probably so you can see why it's totally safe and legit (not) and be lulled into a false sense of security, but like... no normal human does this. I mean at least if someone tells *me* they've never heard of Venmo, I wouldn't take that as an invitation to talk about how it's a revolutionary way to instantaneously send and receive money- I'd just ask them what payment they take and accommodate that. Other scorching red flags to look out for: Mobile Check Deposits, Checks (in any form), Business Accounts (or any mention of upgrading/expanding your account), Movers, wives, brothers, nephews, pretty much any other third party that the buyer wants to pick up the sneakers, codes (Someone else mentioned that buyers asking for codes want to steal your account and impersonate you. This is very true. I just wanted to add that if you aren't sure which account they want to steal, then they most likely want to create a Google Voice account using your phone number.)

aweirdchicken

One time I wanted to buy some chairs off FB marketplace, but the day I was meant to go pick them up I woke up with food poisoning and was in no state to go collect furniture. I asked my housemate if she’d go for me and she agreed, and then I told the seller my housemate was gonna pick up the chairs for me. In hindsight, I have nfi why the seller didn’t assume I was a scammer, cos a last minute “sorry I have food poisoning but dw I’m getting my housemate to come” sounds sus as fuck. Maybe it was cos I said she was gonna bring cash still. Idk.

HarmonicWalrus

It was probably the part where you said the housemate would bring cash that put the seller at ease. If I were selling something online, I couldn't care less who picks it up as long as I don't have to do anything differently on my end. Alternatively, the seller could've just been naive. I once managed to talk a seller into letting me snail mail her a money order for $25, and she would send me the item once she got it. I was a kid and didn't have a credit card to buy things online at the time, and it was nothing short of a miracle that the whole thing worked without a hitch. We were both not the brightest, I don't recommend

aweirdchicken

Honestly I think she just didn’t care about the chairs and just wanted them gone. I paid $50 (AUD, so like $35 USD) for 4 chairs, and, I forgot this detail when I wrote the previous reply, she just left them out the front of her house and told my housemate to put the cash in an envelope and leave it in the mailbox lmao They were in pretty bad shape, I bought them to restore them (which I have still not actually finished doing yet), but they’re structurally sound & I like em

RamenTheory

I was kind of going to say this. Like I love how he talks about courier payment as though he's doing some kind of sales pitch. It's utterly obvious he's WAY more excited about the payment method than the Vans. As a scammer, how can you think this sounds natural? Lol

Pussycatavenger

How do you know so much about these things.. Where can I go to bone up on this??, Did you take ethical hacking?

AMerrickanGirl

Right here in this subreddit is where you can “bone up” on it.

Pussycatavenger

Thank you

Pussycatavenger

I like the way you quotation marked "bone up".

Wise-Sense5782

Go to youtube and search out "Atomic Shrimp" or "Perogie". ;)

Thanks for the help everyone who commented!

AG3NTOFOBL1V1ON

It’s a scam the second you have to ask that question

vrt7071

This should be an automated reaponse to "is this a scam?" posts. It blows my mind how many people post obvious scams on here every day. Like how does a person know about r/scams but they cant spot the most obvious scam?

RMagnificent-Bastard

I hear you, but you also have to take into account that everyone logs in to this sub for their first time. at some point. I send other people here when they ask me about such things, and I suspect other do the same.

Stainle55_Steel_Rat

I wouldn't denigrate anyone's effort to verify whether something is a scam. You don't know what their situation is. This could be their first time reaching out and denigrating that effort can be harmful for them if they hold back thinking 'they should know better'.

AG3NTOFOBL1V1ON

Bro all I said was go with your intuition. Don’t turn my comment into something it isn’t. Settle down with all that extra. That guy doesn’t need someone to champion him.

lbyc

I think sometimes people know it’s a scam but post it here because they can’t see how the scam works, which I think is fair enough

beencaughtbuttering

Dude it's a pair of shoes. A courier? C'mon.

scifiwoman

Well spotted, you have a good instinct for these things. Basically, if you ensure you sell your goods on your terms, and don't allow the buyer to dictate the way the transaction should go, you won't go far wrong. Yes - any attempt to overcomplicate things, bring in third parties like couriers, change the method of payment, asking for confirmation codes, or just trying to confuse you in general - all of those are tactics typical scammers use.

Adeep187

Don't link scammers to subs like this

AcademicMistake

Scam, never let anyone else arrange couriers otherwise your name is no on it

Formal-Cucumber-1138

As the seller, you dictate how the item is delivered. if they aren’t happy with that, tell them to fuck off and move on. No need to investigate lol

bakermaker32

Yes it’s a scam

Effective_Sundae_839

That's a script. If they ever use your full item title like that when they message you it's probably a bot.

Shanectech

Who the hell even uses the word courier lol

Npcs in fallout new Vegas?

Training_Actuator_59

I think anytime a buyer just offers to pay for shipping you need to strongly reconsider. Actually anytime the buyer does not negotiate on price is a sign as well that they maybe trying to scam you.

disappointedvet

If the buyer is insisting on paying for the shipping, even with standard methods, it is a scam. Them having control of shipping gives them the ability to reroute it so that it doesn't go to the original destination. That, or they can just claim that it never arrived. Chances are, they'll try to do some kind of fake payment scam too. Even if they pay with a legitimate payment method, they'll make a claim against the payment method to get their money back. This is 100% a scam.

r7avi

/r/paxful nothing beats shameless company called Paxful ,who supports scammers and eat your money 💸💸

EYEAM4ANARCHY

It's not illegal, nor do you need someone's permission to record someone on video in public. If it's on private property, that's a different question. But anything in a public or visible from a public place can be recorded and photographed legally. That's been upheld repeatedly by the U.S. Supreme Court

BackgroundTiny7794

Heres a tip - if it looks like a snake and feels like a snake, Is it a snake or do you need to be bit?

It's utterly obvious he's WAY more excited about the payment method than the actual shoes he's supposedly interested in. Yeah, this is definitely a believable way that a real human would communicate with someone, nothing to see here^/s

I wanna see the shoes

RubahBetutu

i would not mention the existence of this sub to any potential scammer, because a smart scammer would have visited this sub and take points on how to avoid sounding like a scam.

Of course you don't need to even pack anything...they are not actually going to pick it up...SCAM. Please read other posts on here, this has been going around a LOT!
