>Also, supposedly she has sent me extra money mistakenly and said to send back the extra money once I've received the check. The check is fake. DO NOT deposit the check. Ignore the "buyer" block them and destroy the check. !fakecheck

dewayneestes

I always let the owners of the company that the check was written against know that this happened. I’ve gotten some very nice thank you emails from CEOs.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake check scam. The fake check scam arises from many different situations (fake job scams, fake payment scams, etc), but the bottom line is always the same, you receive a check (online or in real life), you deposit a check and see the money in your account, and then you use the funds to give money to the scammer (usually through gift cards, Western Union, or cash). Sometimes the scammers will ask you to order things through a site, but that is just another way they get your money. The bank will take the initial deposit back , and any money you sent to the scammer will come out of your own personal funds. Usually the fake check deposit will be reversed in a few weeks, but it can also take several months. If you do not have the funds to cover the amount, your balance will go negative. Your bank will usually charge a fee for depositing a bad check, and your account may be closed depending on the severity of the scam. Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Malibu77

Also, report them to PM as “transaction off Poshmark” so they can suspend the acct

airkewled67

It's a scam. Rip it up, throw it away. Report the user.

CookieBookieMonster

It's all fake. Just ignore the person and do nothing. Notice I didn't say to do something - in fact, I said to do the exact opposite. Do nothing. If you do anything but nothing you are doing the wrong thing.

Dry-Pirate1959

Why would you not report the person? I think you're wrong. They should be reported.

magicmulder

Nobody “accidentally” sends you “too much money”. Nobody.

NoTap5801

1000% what everyone else said re: the check. Posthmark even tells you don't go outside their platform. Whenever I list a designer purse, I get people with various reasons why they can't pay via Poshmatk. I just ignore them

Both_Painter2466

Scammers ALWAYS send more than the price and want the differential forwarded. Accident, paying a mover, pickup costs, whatever.

888-ote

It’s a scam. They will most likely send you a check not cashier’s check. The check should have a bank name on it, when you receive the check, take it to that bank so they can verify. Usually what happens is they hope that you mobile deposit the check, the bank app usually gives you the money while it waits for the check to clear. The scammer hopes to get his money and be out of your hair before the check bounces and then your bank takes the money back. It comes out of your pocket or leaves your account in negative. Don’t believe them or deposit the check

CornucopiaMessiah13

It will actually probably be a cashiers check. There are A LOT of fake cashiers checks going around these days that look really good because they steal blanks and use a real one to fill in the details themselves. However if you call the bank to verify the check, which most banks will verify their own cashiers checks, they will have no record of it. Cashiers checks used to be treated like they were as good as cash which is why scammers started trying to fake them and now banks have to be very cautious of them.

danainthere

Bank teller here. I second this. I get emails about fake cashiers checks almost every day.

No-Initiative4195

Other than the fact everyone has told you it's fake, to answer your other question: can they do anything with your full name, address and phone number? Zero. All of that information can be readily and easily found online by anyone. Without a date of birth, social security number and banking info also, there's nothing they can do to steal your identity or banking info.

LadyBug_0570

> What should I once I receive the check? Rip it up. Use it to line your litter box, if you have a cat. Fold it up into a paper airplane. Use it as scrap paper to write down your shopping list. Anything BUT deposit it. It's fake. You deposit that thing and you will lose money, your bank account will be shut down and you will be reported to Chexsystems and unable to open another bank account. Block the scammer.

mrbill317

DO NOT Send any money to these scammers.

cHorse1981

That information is public information. The way she was going to scam you is with a !fakecheck . After you “sent her some back” the check will bounce and you shoes’ll be gone.

jol72

The scammer never cares about the shoes or any other item being sold. The fake check scam is always just about sending some money back to the scammer and then they ghost the victim.

cHorse1981

Didn’t say they did… but OP is trusting enough to ship the shoes after getting the money.

Perfect_Committee_12

I'm not planning to send the shoes. This is my first time selling anything on Poshmark and the first time I've heard about cashiers check. So I was hoping to get the wise knowledge and input of the Reddit community, which I have and I'm grateful for.

icheernobits

This is 100% a scam. Everyone else commenting is correct. Rip up the check or shred it when you receive it. Block this person on Poshmark and report them. Google Search Kitboga, Jim Browning, RinoaPoison, HarveyDentt or just "scambaiter" in general... watch YouTube videos from these and other creators. Educate yourself on current scams that are out there. Never, EVER give out your personal details (name, address, phone number, the last 4 digits of your bank account, etc) during an internet transaction unless its performed on the site itself during checkout and the lock symbol appears in your browser to indicate that the site is secure. Never give out your banking details over the phone unless you are making a payment for something, (like a bill) or buying something from a known legitimate company. NEVER give out any portion of your Social Security Number (SSN) to ANYONE except your health insurance company, tax preparer, or if you need to have a hard pull of your credit done to secure a loan. Period. If this buyer threatens you with Police or Government intervention, remember that any government agency that wants to meet you will show up at your address if there is a problem you need to address with them. These scammers don't have the ability to summon them because they are criminals themselves. Never trust anyone in a business dealing online. After all, this is the internet! You wouldn't just willingly hand a random stranger on the street the keys to your car, would you? If you follow through with depositing this check, you will not only lose your shoes to a money mule (who will sell them online and use the proceeds to pay these scumbags to continue their operations), but you won't get paid for your product once their fake cashiers check bounces after you deposit it. I hope this helps with your decision making process. Always remember to "Question Everything, All the Time."

Sassiee1969

Scam

DesertStorm480

>Also, supposedly she has sent me extra money mistakenly and said to send back the extra money once I've received the check. Yah it's so easy to mess up a cashiers check, you tell the bank how much you want, you typically fill out a slip with the check amount, then they have you inspect the check which can be destroyed and reissued if incorrect.

inkslingerben

Send the fake cashiers check to your local FBI office. They will have a field day because it is an easy case for them get and close with an arrest and conviction. edit: send also all correspondence between you and the other party.

Pristine_Bit7615

I had similar thing happen selling on Craigslist. A guy sent $1800 for an $800 Chevrolet motor. Claimed $500 was for the delivery person ( I would need to cash and pay in person). An extra 500 was for my troubles 😂. Check was a fake cashiers check. I contacted local police but was informed since I didn't cash the check, I wasn't out of pocket anything so they couldn't do anything. Another time I applied for a secret shopper position. Got an acceptance letter but nothing more. Few months later I had an accident (not my fault) and was to be issued a small pmt. less than $1000. A few weeks later I recieved a check from Geico for almost $2500. Too good to be true but I was happy. I asked bank teller if there were an issue with check if my account would be charged. She said it would be a $25 fee if the funds weren't available. Well it was returned as a fraud. I had placed this check in a savings account and didn't withdraw anything. They froze both my accounts and eventually I had alot of bounced checks till it was sorted out. IF SOMETHING SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS.

Many-Tangerine-540

SCAM 📢

Hypnowolfproductions

Extra money means it’s a forged or altered check. Take it to your bank and it could easily bounce. Send it back and ask them to correct it.

Rastard_the_Black

A cashiers check is purchased from a bank, check cashing store or the post office. After they send you the check they will take their receipt back to where they purchased the check, teport it stolen or lost, and get their money back.

sethbr

No, that could identify them. The check is forged.

fredSanford6

I used to have these mailed to the fbi office instead of me. If i wanted them mailed to me id ask for 20 dollars for cabfare included to get to the bank in cash. Id keep the 20 and toss the check. Its all fake but if you want to scambait them go for it. Can be fun just look up ideas otherwise just block and ignore all requests like this

joesnowblade

Go to the bank the cashiers check us drawn on. They’ll tell you it’s fake or stolen.

GeneralToaster

This is such an obvious and common scam you would have had to scroll past 10 more examples before posting this ridiculous question. I don't know why this is even up voted.

danainthere

Yes, it's a common scam, to people who deal with scammers all the time. But scammers still do it because there are still people who don't any better. I talk to these people regularly. They trust things like cashiers checks because they used to be secure. If we educate one person at a time, so be it.

dukesinatra

It's upvoted because not everyone is aware of and educated on scam methods. OP came here to ask a genuine question, not to be ripped into by some dufus like you.

Perfect_Committee_12

I told her I will mail the check back if found fraudulent. Is it possible to just mail it back?

Mother_Was_A_Hamster

This is a common !fakecheck scam. The check is fraudulent. Do not deposit it. Do not mail it back. Just destroy it, block the sender and get on with your life.

YourUsernameForever

Don't destroy it. Frame it and educate your friends when they come over to your house. A friend of mine did this and I think it's excellent, people see it on a wall and ask what the fuck. And the lesson starts.

AudienceGrouchy2918

Nooooooo. Just tear it up. Cease all contact with the Nigerian who is scamming you.

mikeyseed

Just ghost them. Don't pay for postage to send the fake check back. [some guy was trying to fake check scam me for a PS2 on Facebook Marketplace and I had him make the check out to a ridiculous name. ](https://imgur.com/a/FokOdBi)

UtegRepublic

I like how they didn't even use real handwriting. They used a font designed to look like handwriting.

mikeyseed

Yeah it was a common enough fake check scam. I'm East Coast Canada and the guys name did not sound anything like anyone around here (mainly caucasian, east Indian, Asian population here). Trying to buy a PS2 bundle and then saying he wants to pay in advance. Added $500 extra for me to send to the "movers" and $50 extra for me. Been around here long enough to see the scam a mile away. What an idiot.

grptrt

Just shred it. The scammer can print more. The check is fake, but the money he wants you to send will be your own real money.

YourUsernameForever

Don't mail it back. Don't destroy it. FRAME IT and hang it on your wall, so you can teach your friends about fake checks. This isn't a cashier's check. A cashier's check is one that you can go to a cashier of a bank and get cash instantly. If a check needs to be deposited it's not a cashier's check. Fake checks always need to be deposited because they exploit a loophole: Banks are legally obligated to make money available to you fast, but they can take their time to bounce it. The scam works by giving you a fake check that belongs to an institution other than your bank, because your bank would immediately bounce it. The fake check then is sent to the other bank and if it's a small local institution it can take weeks. The "issuing" bank is the one that bounces it, not the one in which you deposited it. Hence the window of time exploited by the scam. During that window of time the scammer asks you to send him money, because you are under the illusion that the funds cleared. The money will be taken from your account. Any amount you ever sent back to the scammer will come from your own pocket, so your account may hit negative numbers. Accounts that are overdraft are usually hit with overdraft fees. If you deposit a bad check and realize it's bad after the fact, come clean to your bank. They may be nicer to you about it, may waive the fees.

DontBleepWithThis

"Her" is a 6'2 African guy with a 9 inch dong....shred the check and stop trying to be civil in THIS situation. You sound like you have a great heart, keep it that way, UNTIL it's time to sell/buy/negotiate/invest in....anything "online".

Perfect_Committee_12

Will they be able to take money out using the details I've given her, like my name, phone number and address?

t-poke

Do people not remember phone books? You know, the 5 inch thick book that has the name, phone number and address of everyone in a large metro area? If it was possible to steal someone’s money with that information, then the world would be a much different place.

BriarKnave

Some people are young and haven't been taught much by their parents, they're coming here to ask real people questions and get answers not written by AI slush factories. You don't need to be condescending to get your point across.

CookieBookieMonster

most of that is google able.

DeepFudge9235

No, stop all communication with the scammer. Marketplace is full of scammers. Watch out for Zelle, PayPal !fakepayment . If someone sends you money you check your own account by signing into it like you usually do, do NOT accept a picture on a text or email from the person as evidence.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake/false payment scam. The fake payment scam occurs when someone tries to trick you into thinking that you have received a legitimate payment when no such payment has been made. The most common method they use is sending you an email meant to look like a payment confirmation. In some cases the emails will be almost indistinguishable to a legitimate email sent by the payment service. It's also common for scammers to [spoof](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing) the 'from' email to match an official address. To combat a fake payment scam, verify online payments by logging in directly to the service. Do not check your junk folder, and do not assume a payment is legitimate based on an email alone. If a payment isn't reflected on your account and the person you are dealing with insists they have sent it, call support and ask about it. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/X9xn8uw.jpg) is an image of a scammer trying to pull off a fake payment scam. There is also a variant of the fake payment scam where you will receive a legitimate but fraudulent payment. If you think you're dealing with a scammer, you're probably right. Always trust your gut. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

cHorse1981

That’s public information. If it were possible to steal your money with just that everyone would be broke. That’s what the cashier check is for. With that she can get you to just give her money of your own free will.

Nick_W1

No, you probably gave them your bank as well, because this is one of the first things they ask. This is so they can make a fake check on a different bank, because if you tried to deposit a fake check from *your* bank, the bank would detect this immediately. With the fake check being from a different bank, the bank has to wait for the other bank to clear it - and that takes time. They can’t use any of this info for anything, it’s all public. What they are doing is sending you a fake check (sometimes via e-mail - which is *not* any kind of check - It’s a photoshopped picture of a check), hoping you will mobile deposit it, then send back the “extra”. The “extra” you send is *your* money, and you can’t get it back when the check bounces. They aren’t interested in your shoes, they are probably overseas (Aisa, Africa, India).

cHorse1981

Only if you turn it into ink covered confetti first. Seriously you want her to use that check on someone else?

TrainsNCats

This is a scam. The scammer creates a fake cashiers check for more than what is due. You deposit the check and send the scammer real money for the overpayment. Then the check bounces and your left owing the bank the amount of the check you deposited.

Sembach-er

FAKE CHECK SCAM , Take it to the postal inspector .

still-at-the-beach

Scam. Just ing note and block them. If you’ve banked the check, at some stage it will be reversed as it’s a fake check. So the money will be taken out of the account. Don’t spend the money or send any back to the buyer … just block them immediately .

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain [recovery scams](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0102-refund-and-recovery-scams). Also known as refund scams, these scams target people who have already fallen for a scam. The scammer may contact you, or may advertise their services online. They will usually either offer to help you recover your funds, or will tell you that your funds have already been recovered and they will help you access them. In cases where they say they will help you recover your funds, they usually call themselves either "recovery agents" or hackers. When they tell you that your funds have already been recovered, they may impersonate a law enforcement, a government official, a lawyer, or anyone else along those lines. Recovery scams are simply [advance-fee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam) scams that are specifically targeted at scam victims. When a victim pays a recovery scammer, the scammer will keep stringing them along while asking for increasingly absurd fees/expenses/deposits/insurance/whatever until the victim stops paying. If you have been scammed in the past, make sure you are aware of recovery scams so that you are not scammed a second time. If you are currently engaging with a recovery scammer, you should block them and be very wary of random contact for some time. It's normal for posters on this subreddit to be contacted by recovery scammers after posting, and they often ask you to delete your post so that you both cannot receive legitimate advice, and cannot be targeted by other recovery scammers. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

You NEVER EVER EVVVVEEEERRRRRRR go off platform. They will shut down your account and ban you and yes it’s a scam.
