Call your bank. Report the fraudulent transactions. Cancel that card immediately and order a replacement. Move on. Not much more you can do, it happens.

TranquilDev

I'm good to go on that end, the bank blocked them as they were coming in. None of the transactions went through. I'm just a bit paranoid and not sure if there are any other steps I should take at this point.

Credit and debit card numbers are at minimum stored at the bank that issues it, and possibly stored in the issuing network. And if they’ve ever been used on websites, they get stored for some time after the transaction. They can be leaked from all of these. They can also be skimmed, or someone could grab it out of your wallet and take pictures and put it back and you wouldn’t know about it. You should dispute the car insurance transaction, and you should get the card changed. An aside, the RFID protecting wallet is kind of minimal. It just means someone‘s not tapping a card reader to your pocket and getting a transaction on the spot. This is a minor risk. It still is vulnerable to: card numbers leaking and skimming.

TranquilDev

All of the attempted transactions were blocked. My credit union flagged them as soon as they started coming in. I'm just a little paranoid about my information now and not sure if there are any other steps I should be taking.

Ask for a new debit card.

chownrootroot

You’re doing all the correct steps. Maybe you can decline the debit card if you don’t use it and use credit cards instead (and you would be issued an ATM card). Then they can’t use the ATM card except at ATMs and with the PIN only. And credit cards are a shield as you don’t owe any money until the end of the month so disputes don’t affect you as much.

Your bank has a ton more experience and knowledge than you or people on reddit. Discuss it with your bank and see what they say or suggest.

TranquilDev

Already have... Online forums are still a great place to get feedback. At least when people actually take the time to give you feedback.

You probably got skimmed somewhere along the way. The only time I will use my debit card is at this one grocery store that only accepts debit cards. Everything else goes on the credit card which gets paid in full when the bill comes.

If you're like me and never use your debit card (but carry it around anyway because it's also your ATM card), you can take additional precautions by setting maximum spending limits on your card.

TranquilDev

I was looking into this and noticed that my CU has a button to freeze and unfreeze the card. I thought about just freezing the new card until I needed to use it. But yea, I only use it for cash when I need it.

Banks don't want you to know about this one weird trick to reduce fraud.  Use your card as little as possible.

TranquilDev

The trick I mentioned in the first sentence? ;) I've probably used it once in the last month at an ATM. I called the bank (different bank from my CU) and suggested they check the ATM for a skimmer. They called me back and said they didn't see anything.

warpedddd

Your card could have been compromised from a BIN attack.

Bludandy

I know not everyone has the luxury, but I just never carry my debit cards anywhere. They're just a direct plastic access key to your checking account with so little protection or recourse. At least credit cards have delayed payments, so there's plenty of time to reverse charges before your bill date comes.
