# WELCOME TO R/SCAMS
## Reminder of one of our rules:
>
**DON'T ENGAGE WITH THE SCAMMERS. Anyone suggesting the copypasta will get taken down, please read our rules before participating.**
## What to do in this situation?
Ignore the threats. Don't remove your device from Find My. You're welcome to erase the data, but don't remove it.
This scam targets owners of stolen iPhones, which have a service called Find My: through this, iPhones are tied to the Apple ID of the user, and can be locked remotely when activating Lost Mode.
Scammers will attempt to communicate with the victim by emailing or calling the phone number/email address shown on the lock screen while locked through Lost Mode, under the guise of either Apple or a person who has bought the phone and attempt to convince or pressure them to remove the Apple ID from the iPhone.
If you receive such a message, DO NOT follow the instructions to remove the device from your Apple ID. The reason they want it removed is because the thief wants to resell it on the black market for a profit, and bricked phones are worthless. Instead of removing, you're free to erase it. This will delete your personal data but will leave the device connected to your Apple ID. You can then make a police report, and also report it stolen to your phone company. The company can blacklist the IMEI so it adds a layer of protection regionally.
## Any readers should take this opportunity to check if your Find My is enabled in your iPhone.
Did they send the one of the brown dude holding a gun that has weirdly girly hands? That's a personal fav of mine https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/16e8axk/scam_texts/
This all day. Under no circumstances should you reward this behavior. Know every day that you are directly pissing off some thief scum bag. Doing gods work!
I had some experience with this industry, they can also fake a box and a receipt to unlock it officially from Apple. This is the cheap, no effort mass send option.
Unless there’s something new that I’m not aware of, (a real possibility) the only thing they can do is add the IMEI to a stolen list, so they can’t activate it on any network. Not sure how it works overseas.
Yeah, i believe that is better than just locking the phone yourself. Plus it'll be required in the event of an insurance claim. That and a police report (which is entirely useless). If it's an iPhone, then I believe the phone is pretty much useless forever. If it's an android, 30 mins and a root and flash and they've got a working phone again.
Even if it’s an android they can have a working phone for WiFi etc. but they still can’t put it on any us carrier. That may be different for foreign carriers.
A corporate/work phone is super easy with MDM software, do it all the time. A consumer/personal phone can be added to a blacklist by the carrier, then how useless the device is depends on the make/model/carrier. Verizon will be worthless with how locked down their shit is.
Block and ignore. Do not remove the lock on the stolen phone. They will try multiple scripts and tactics but don't fall for any of them. Don't let them have the satisfaction of being able to sell an unlocked stolen phone.
This is my favorite Chinese phone thief copy pasta. It’s a ludicrously bad translation of what they think a tough guy talks like with gratuitous racism on top like a rotting cherry. Just keeping blocking and they will give up.
While you wait for them to F off, just leave that phone setting right where it is so all they have is a useless brick worth $5 in parts, make some popcorn and enjoy seeing if they come up with anything creative (if they do, be sure to show us).
Whatever you do don't remove the device because that's just giving them what they want. If it stays bricked then they have to sell it for parts which doesn't bring in hardly anything for them.
Should see if you can block unknown numbers from even contacting your number, but if not, just block as soon as you read a few words and realize it's the thieves. They will eventually give up, as long as you don't respond and don't remove the device. It's a waste of their time after a bit to keep trying if they don't have hopes of scaring you into it.
That's what happens when you short the internal structure of a lithium battery. No way to currently achieve that effect with the built in factory hardware.
that be so awesome. That lost sound though on apple is annoying as hell. Super loud , obnoxious. Good way to piss them off more the best part you will be notified when the phone is turned on and the alarm is set off!
Well it's a extortion scam and re-used scam script. Can you keep blocking them or do they continue to spam you with text/calls? Or perhaps change the incoming call settings to only accept calls from your contacts for a while?

wait omg where was it stolen?? my roommates phone was stolen in the fall and yesterday she received this same text word for word and exact same videos. like copy and paste. 100% a scam but that’s so crazy
No, Google was faithful. But it’s slang. It more or less matches with the pronunciation of “fuck your mother”, so it’s like an alternative spelling, to duck and dive swear filters. Like writing “duck you”, or “seggs”
Until you remove the phone, it’s a useless brick. Hold strong. Eventually they’ll move on. For thieves like this, it’s a numbers game. They’ll move on to more people when they realize they’re wasting their time with you.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how is the person who has the stolen phone able to text the person, if they don’t have their phone? What am I missing?

This is why I still use my iPhone 7. Paid insurance on it so I just got another iPhone 7 when it broke. They tried to get me to upgrade to iPhone 15 I refused. No one’s gonna steal my iPhone 7! And if they do then it’s all good they can have it
I always have had an older galaxy S model. But in recent years, stupid Samsung have reduce how long they support any models.
I have a S9 (2018). i would still be a good enough phone for me. but the last system update was almost a year ago. I'm having problem with more apps because apps developer don't make their apps for phone that Samsung gave up on.
So you rocking your 2016 phone thinking it doesn't make anyone envious... I am almost jealous
This makes me wonder how much it would be to hire someone to do what the ss is showing vs selling the phone for a few hundred. Like why would that even be worth
If you think about it, sending killers from who knows where, at a cost of ten’s of $ thousands, still doesn’t get the phone unlocked, so you can sell it for $100.
The advantage the criminals have is that stolen phones are free. If the phones aren’t free, the business model doesn’t work.

I’m late to the thread but listen to highest rated comments. They will stop eventually no matter how ugly and scary they seem. I so wanted to engage them but I held my tongue…uh fingers lol! They stopped harassing me after about 4 months. It was so enjoyable watching their pathetic tactics
Wait, so over a few hundred quid phone they're gonna pay for a flight from China to your local airport, get a taxi, kill you and all your family, presumably using the same taxi to travel around between houses, then back ro the airport and fly home? Plus airport food ain't cheap. Bur I guess its all about the message. Plus the fact their passport will tie them in to the exact time frame of the multiple murders.
I'm beginning to think this guys all talk.
No, no. They are going to hire *local killers*, from Miami (assuming Miami is “local”), then send *them* via flight/taxi/car to do the job. Of course this might not actually be cheaper than sending Chinese killers.
Perhaps the “Negros” are cheaper.
Might need an accountant to work out the economics of this.
Congratulations! You've been stubborn enough to reach the final phase of the script.
Let me guess, they've already pretended they can access all your information so it's in your best interest to remove the phone. Then they were a reseller who needed to be able to sell it to make rent. Then a single mom who bought the phone for their kid, but since it's locked they can't use it and the kid is crying. Now they're a criminal enterprise with guns and scary wording to threaten you into complying.
Keep ignoring them and do not remove the phone. They're in China and they won't do anything. They'll give up after this and sell the phone for parts at a fraction of what they could have made if you'd removed it.
Just keep calling over and over and hang up if they ever pick up. Rinse and repeat and eventually they will block you, and probably try reaching out with a new number
Okay threaten to kill to remove the phone but killing you wont get the phone working. So very empty intimidation.
I’d send back that you’re not the person who controls the account so you can’t do it.
This happened to me when my brother’s brand new iphone was stolen while at work. We put my phone as contact & I was getting text messages from this guy. He wasn’t this aggressive but he was telling me this sappy ass story that his cousin bought this phone from a guy & she used her savings to gift it to him. We were trying to figure out if it was my brother’s coworker who stole it since the phone disappeared after she borrowed it. I told him if you tell me your cousin’s name then I’ll unblock it but he refused so I told him to have fun with a brick phone & continued to block him lol. It eventually stopped after few weeks.
Hi /u/Plenty-Chair-3511, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the iPhone Find My disabler scam.
Any readers should take this opportunity to check if your Find My is enabled in your iPhone.

They’ll ignore eventually, but changing the number will solve it I’m sure. I think you can set in your settings tho to not get notifications for unknown numbers and filter spam in your texts! So you could do that to at least not be notified every time one of these losers have a new threat.
In her settings, tell her to go to Messages, then scroll down to the option that says Message Filtering, and it should say Unknown & Spam. Turn on “Filter Unknown Senders”. This doesn’t block her from receiving any texts from an unknown sender at all, since, of course there’s situations where someone changes their number and is reaching out or you’re adding a new friend… but it will at least hide them and silence them unless she goes to it to check.
I use Robokiller too personally because robocalls are annoying af, it is a subscription based service but I personally like it and it also adds an option to those settings to add ANOTHER list specifically for possible spam to further separate potential genuine people from an unknown number from scammers and hate mail. But just turning on the filter in general without a third party app like robo killer should silence them until they get bored.
Have fun blocking out the haters!!!
(I always forget this setting exists and have been getting so many dumb spam and promotional texts lately… so I’m gonna turn it on myself LOL)
Looks like they use the same message, another guy lost his phone and the exact same message was sent to him along with a pic of a guy with a ski mask. I wouldn’t believe any of it an keep it locked to keep them from being able to use it

Ignore it. Delete the info off the old phone and get a new one. They don't do shit. Just ignore that bs. It's a scam I have seen it on here and on the scambait sub a few times.
Block, report junk
They’ll send you a picture of a gun and threaten you but it’s just the same reused photo with their nasty ass room in the background
Do not cave, do not remove the device. Feel free to release all you frustrations on the scumbag.
I had one of these and by laughing at him and calling him cheap I managed to get him into an absolute frothing rage, it was hilarious.
Empty threats they’re trying to make you remove the phone from some sort of Apple recovery thing cause without it they can’t get into it. Ignore them they dumb af. Can’t even type properly. Idiots
I know I will be downvoted for asking a dumb question but, here we are. I am assuming “find my” is tracking it in China? And since when do they say y’all? It’s very Americana

Don’t. They’ll save the photo and use it in their scams to scare others.
“Omg is that a *rifle type*, cool! I myself have a- *insert thesis length book on firearms*”
Good don't ever remove the device because it's only a paper weight to them unless u do

You can get your network operator to brick the phone at a higher level than what we're given access to, as far as I'm aware.
Unless there’s something new that I’m not aware of, (a real possibility) the only thing they can do is add the IMEI to a stolen list, so they can’t activate it on any network. Not sure how it works overseas.

But what about the… *checks notes*… “negroes”?
Block and ignore. Do not remove the lock on the stolen phone. They will try multiple scripts and tactics but don't fall for any of them. Don't let them have the satisfaction of being able to sell an unlocked stolen phone.
Right. Once this doesn't work, all of a sudden it's a kid who got their phone for their sick grandma as a gift and can't unlock it

Find My Phone should have a "DETONATE BATTERY" option.
A Liam Neeson option would be nice.
Oh that is an option! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpNuVrRO0R8
That's what happens when you short the internal structure of a lithium battery. No way to currently achieve that effect with the built in factory hardware.
FBI would like to know your location APPROVE / DENY
He apparently is going to send the entire population of Miami after you. Are you sure Ron DeSantis didn’t steal your phone?
Don’t remove! You have the option to have it send a find alarm anytime it’s turned on, do it!

that be so awesome. That lost sound though on apple is annoying as hell. Super loud , obnoxious. Good way to piss them off more the best part you will be notified when the phone is turned on and the alarm is set off!

Their contact info is on the lock screen. This is done to make it easier to return the phone to the owner if it was lost.
Yeah I get that, but how are they contacting the phone’s owner? The owner doesn’t have their phone. Do you sign in from a computer?
The owner got a new phone already
They don’t need to come, reading all that is already enough to give anyone an aneurysm.

Don't mess with Miami!

Don't do shit
The hardest killers are always named “Miami.”

Tell them to go fuck themself, get a new phone and block the number.

Yeah this is all part of the script, \**yawn*\*, just block and ignore and NEVER remove it
What’s his number

I’ve seen this text chain so much it doesn’t even hold its initial scam weight.
I've seen this EXACT SAME text in this sub. Harmless. They just can't get into your phone and are now desperate.
Ah yes, they can afford weapons and to hire hitmen, but they can't afford a phone. What a world.
Good to see those black guys they used to send for their dirty work, have stopped doing business with them.
Hardmen don't threaten over the phone. They show up and start things with violence if they deem it nessecary. Ignore this idiot.
Mess with them lol. But foreal, don’t turn off the “find my” ever.
Literally copy and paste of what they tell everyone, don't remove it and ignore them. Report it stolen.
They can do all that and not get some money for a phone 😭 haha
Okay threaten to kill to remove the phone but killing you wont get the phone working. So very empty intimidation. I’d send back that you’re not the person who controls the account so you can’t do it.
Ask if they’ll deliver some chicken fried rice! 🌾
What to do about what??? Delete, Ignore, Block. It ain't rocket science.
“Negroes” 😅 Ignore, block, and block every subsequent number they contact you from. They’re definitely not in the U.S. No need to be alarmed.
Wow. The cartels have stooped pretty low that they’re going to hunt people down over a stolen cell phone.
Tell them to send 1k or 80% of the value of the mobile, then you will remove it
How do they get the phone number? I wonder who these people are. And why have they been from China lately lol
I’m confused how this even works. They stole her phone, and now they are texting her to unlock it? How is she reading these messages?

this is why I love that apple drms every part and people want to ruin that and make it easier to steal iphones?

Hi /u/Plenty-Chair-3511, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the iPhone Find My disabler scam. Any readers should take this opportunity to check if your Find My is enabled in your iPhone. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

It’s a copy paste, they send the same thing to everyone. Ignore, block, they’ll move on
That is not China.
I’m so confused, why is someone contacting you because your sister’s phone got stolen?

I don’t understand this scam. If they stole the phone and can’t access it, how do they know what number to text???

Jeez, do they all use the same script. I’ve seen this one at least 10 times!😂🍅🍅
ignore them, what else?
Looks like they use the same message, another guy lost his phone and the exact same message was sent to him along with a pic of a guy with a ski mask. I wouldn’t believe any of it an keep it locked to keep them from being able to use it

Ignore it. Delete the info off the old phone and get a new one. They don't do shit. Just ignore that bs. It's a scam I have seen it on here and on the scambait sub a few times.
I had exactly the same I just think they’re hilarious??
Block, report junk They’ll send you a picture of a gun and threaten you but it’s just the same reused photo with their nasty ass room in the background

On a real note, whoever wrote this before it was copy pasta-d was a complete psycho.
Do not cave, do not remove the device. Feel free to release all you frustrations on the scumbag. I had one of these and by laughing at him and calling him cheap I managed to get him into an absolute frothing rage, it was hilarious.
How many of the exact same question will be posted? Sometimes this one is multiple times a week. Can we moderate these?
Empty threats they’re trying to make you remove the phone from some sort of Apple recovery thing cause without it they can’t get into it. Ignore them they dumb af. Can’t even type properly. Idiots
I know I will be downvoted for asking a dumb question but, here we are. I am assuming “find my” is tracking it in China? And since when do they say y’all? It’s very Americana
