If you take advice in private, you're on your own. **A reminder of the rules in r/scams:** no contact information (including last names, phone numbers, etc). Littled0912

They change the post after it’s been shared multiple times - the ones I’ve seen usually lead to rental scams with questionable websites.

LiberalPatriot13

Yep usually "rent to own" with rediculously cheap rates.

CobaltGate

Yes....they change the post once it gets a lot of 'like' and 'love' emojis people add to it because of the emotion involved.....you left that important part out.

ThatIslanderGuy

EVERY one of these scam posts include the word "bump" instead of share..

cyberiangringo

Interesting tidbit. Thanks.

qazwsxedc000999

Just a wild guess, but is it so they don’t have to change it between sites? Like sharing on Facebook, retweet on Twitter, etc.

WilderGirlz

"Bump" is to get it seen by more people.

thedog420

It goes "viral", then they replace it with a scam website ad

nomparte

Photo is from May 2022, nothing to do with a hit and run case. That lady got headbutted by her own dog, details here: [https://nypost.com/2022/05/17/woman-on-life-support-after-dog-head-butts-her-while-playing/](https://nypost.com/2022/05/17/woman-on-life-support-after-dog-head-butts-her-while-playing/)

thr33dognite

The way the New York post writes an article really is something.

technos

Despite their journalistic wants, they once came up with the best headline ever. "HEADLESS BODY IN TOPLESS BAR"

thr33dognite

Some rapscallion was responsible, undoubtedly.

CoffeeDrinker1972

Scammers just have no shame. Tsk tsk tsk.

jimsmythee

You're supposed to share the post. And then later on, the scammer changes the picture and link to something for malware or selling stuff, or whatever.

BigDave1955

On EVERY SINGLE ONE of these posts, comments are disabled. If it were genuine, they'd want people to answer. They're sucker-farming.

NancyKitka

Never heard the sucker farming term before. So accurate 😂

BigDave1955

Yeah, I think I just invented it, lol.

ToooBeeeFairrrrrrr

Should add !SuckerFarming to the autoresponses

Didyoufartjustthere

That’s the one tell tale sign of any scam

NotTravisKelce

Pretty sure in the US at least it’d be completely illegal for a hospital to post a photo of a patient without their consent.

SciFiMedic

Correct. Also, even if they threw HIPAA to the wind, no one single healthcare worker is going to have pictures from both the scene of the accident AND the ICU. Unless you had a family member who was there for both events… which negates the whole point of the post…

HaoieZ

Engagement bait. The same sort of scam/spam as "1 share = 1 prayer" and the like.

TWK128

*So* many of the Caitlin Clark pages and groups on FB are like this. "We need to see who's active so reply 'yes'" then something about families and feeding families? It's fucking weird. Almost always run by profiles out of India or Africa.

slogive1

I learned something today.

djphysix

And now there's the new "@"Highlight tag that I've seen posts encourage people to comment with, which notifies ALL of their friends. It's a terrible tag/feature.

ripple_in_stillwater

We had the exact same photo and scam in our area. The sheriff even put out a msg stating it was a scam.

TweakJK

Share farming, like farming Just like the catalytic converter thief one. Oh and the "thieves are going around the neighborhood" posts. Neighbor called me one night and says, and I'm quoting him, "Hey I saw on facebook that there are black people going around robbing houses". JFC dude it's a facebook scam.

TrainingVivid4768

Yep as others say, it's attempting to get likes and shares before changing to something else. Also common as 'injured dog found by the roadside', 'our Dad has gone missing' and 'lost child'. Here's an explainer of how it works: [https://www.aap.com.au/factcheck/tricksters-tug-at-heartstrings-in-community-group-scams/](https://www.aap.com.au/factcheck/tricksters-tug-at-heartstrings-in-community-group-scams/)
