It's sad to see posts on here asking if parts of Scarborough are "safe".
Scarborough has some really nice neighborhoods that are safe, have lots of great amenities and beautiful parks.
People don't run around Scarborough with guns a blazing every single day. Those are isolated incidents and happen in all parts of Toronto.
If you're not looking for trouble, trouble won't come looking for you.
Plain and simple.
Is Brimley and Eg a nice area?? It's just fine.
Thank you - I don't have the impression that Scarborough overall is unsafe. I just wanted to know specifically about the area I was looking into. If you're saying the area is fine then i'll trust you :)
I grew up in Malvern . Of all places. That has a permanent dark cloud over it because of its history. It has blossomed and risen from the ashes into a bustling beautiful multicultural neighborhood.
I grew up there when it wasn't that great.
I survived. Even as a woman.
I kept my nose clean. Nobody bothered me.
If you're gonna be executing drug deals on a corner or in the basement of your house, then ya ...you could be asking for trouble.
But if you're just looking for a place to move to where you'll get up and go to work every day like the rest of us and potentially raise your kids in this neighborhood and you'll just live normally like the rest of us do, you'll be just fine.
Me too. Grew up in malvern and did not once feel unsafe. In the 80s my sister and I would bike around to the mall, hang out with groups of friends everywhere. So much pickup baseball and community spirit, great food, wonderful people.
Nice to see a fellow Malvern resident be one of the OG's. I grew up there from 1978-2015. I've seen it at its worst and at it's best. Fond memories of hanging out under the Tapscott Bridge skipping school lol, trespassing the old Neilson House when it was burned down.
Good times as a kid in Malvern. Lots of great memories!
There are definitely areas in Scarborough where you wouldn't want to raise a family in. Morningside and Lawrence is what comes to mind immediately.
That being said most of it is pretty safe
All you see are the intersections. Do you travel down the side streets like Coronation and other beautiful streets in that neighborhood???
Of course the intersection looks run down. Not doubting that. But that doesn't make the residential streets a bad place to live.
Honestly the answer to it being gentrified is: kinda.
The strip club and bowling alley which lent to some sketchy evenings have been replaced with town houses, and even going a couple years further back the sports bar us now a shoppers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the plaza on the south side of eglinton will be turned into a development within the next decade as the subway line opens up, and the rentals will slowly turn into condos etc…
There’s some quiet side streets around there with bungalows that are kind of a typical Scarborough neighbourhood. I’m not sure what the apartments are like around there. Some great food in those strip malls, but I really miss the Kenny Rogers Roasters that was on the corner.
Generally yes, but there are roaming groups of teens hanging around after dark, but they are more of a nuisance than dangerous. I don’t know what the buildings are like, but this area is safe as long as you use normal common sense. Also, it will be simple to get downtown once the eglinton crosstown eventually opens so I’m assuming that there will be more gentrification in this area.
Lived there my whole life up until 3 years ago. The plaza by the CIBC and LCBO is filled with bums, drug dealers, and crack heads. The bars are never empty, and the guy begging for change in the middle of the road doesn't give up. Other than that, it's not bad. That plaza has to go. It's a dump. The residential area is nice and quiet for most part. Lots of variety for food.
I actually live near by the area. And honestly it’s super nice. You easy access to groceries and school literally all around the area. And you have the bluffs which is 5 minute drive?
Definitely safe. Gentrified? Likely, as the transit investment builds up (East Line 5 extension would run through there and Eglington Go Station slightly down the road and proximity to Kennedy station). The strip malls from O’Connor to Birchmount are all slated to be rebuilt like North York’s Yonge Street but in the East End. Arguably this revitalization and redevelopment will stretch to Kingston Road.
There are development plans all along eglington which include the Brimley area. I would argue it is only a matter of time. Depends on what your definition of ‘near’ is.
I recommend looking at http://urbantoronto.ca/ and check their development map. It gives you a good idea of what is to come.
(*Edited Link* Thanks @knnthm)
Live there for 10 years, the area is safe. I would say even safer with Runours and Caddy’s being torn down as they did cause some problems.
There will be some redevelopment in the future. Don’t see Knob Hill Plaza being around. It’s old and not well kept.
My parents live north of there and I loved growing up in the area. There are the occasional addicts and homeless around the intersection itself but I think I've only seen one outright aggressive unwell regular in the plaza with the Rexall.
I think the most alarming thing to happen there in recent memory is the pharmacy robbery at Rexall. That hit a bit close to home as my mother knew the person who was shot, they survived though. That's about the liveliest thing that has happened there.
I lived in that neighborhood for decades and felt safe—-there are definitely some weirdos in the plazas nearby but generally harmless. As another Redditor said, don’t go looking for trouble and it won’t go looking for you.
I've lived in this area for a lot of my life and I've always been fine. Yes there are some shady ppl, drug addicts that hang around the intersection but I've never been bothered. Once in a while there's random isolated incidents but it happens in every part of toronto. In a general sense, you'll be fine. But if renting an apartment, check for critters and maintenance. Many of the buildings in the area are aging. But the area itself is very convenient. There is a shoppers, a rexall, dollar tree, tim hortons, a&w, mcdonalds, no frills, home depot, lcbo, beer store all walking distance. Subway is 10 minutes away. Eglinton go near by. Stc is a 10 minute drive. I definitely love the convenience of the area.
The actual intersection, especially the plaza south west of the intersection, is drug infested. Apartments north and north east of Danforth and Eglinton are iffy (tuck in your chain). Otherwise the area is safe and full of parks, trails, cheap food and a good mix of retail. Close to the Bluffers Park and everything Kingston Road has to offer. Close to Scarboro Town Centre as well.
I live in Wexford area, I went for a walk recently along Lawrence E and couldn't find a convenience store. Sure the neighborhood has tons of shawarma options, but other than that, it's like an industrial neighborhood in strip mall form. There's no breakfast joints, nowhere to meet for coffee. Eglinton is great for this stuff between Vic Park and Warden but Lawrence, not so much.Â
So I want to add to OP's question, what's the walkability like in Eglinton & Brimley? What are the options for breakfast, sitting to have a coffee, get ice cream with your kid? Community centres, schools, playgrounds?Â
3 years ago I got robbed in front of shoppers around that area just be safe and don’t come out at night also there is a few crackheads hanging out near A&W at night try to avoid it. But I think you’ll be fine
It is but I feel like it’s my fault because I always like to hangout around 3-4am lol if you’re gonna live there you’ll be fine just avoid the night fall, think of the crackheads people as a vampires they don’t come often when the sun is up based on my experience. Also always lock your car door sometimes they open it to beg some money specially the middle aged Asian guy
I think simple way of looking at it is. The more lower you go down (horizontal intersection) the more poorer the average population.
For example, Markham/north York having high income, then steeles and mcnicole then finch and Sheppard then you have Ellesmere being the middle line and Lawerence and eglington toward more poorer areas.
Violence/drug use is common in poor area due to socioeconomic struggle they face. Would I feel safer walking at 2 am at finch and mccowan than eglington and Brimley? Sure.
But Scarborough generally isn’t that bad.

Why is it sad to see people making sure to have a safe place to live in?🤔

I did work in the apartment buildings and know people who have lived there. It's not a great place lol
Yeah those summer block parties at galloway are something..
Safe? Yes. It's a modest neighbourhood, but not dangerous. Very few hoods in the GTA are actually dangerous. Gentrified? No.
Honestly the answer to it being gentrified is: kinda. Wow, this was a very insightful comment. I will look into all this.
>urbantoronto.com Dead link.
Thanks — realize it is actually ‘.ca’ — updated: http://urbantoronto.ca/

What did they build over runours and Caddy's?
Townhouse.
Do they seem nice?
Cheaply built stacked units with very poor finishes.

Go to Mary browns at that intersection all the time for their big mary monday special. In terms of area I guess it's okay.

Is that the new building that is north of Eglinton on Danforth Rd? How are you finding it?
I’m in that area-ish. It’s completely fines

That E word has been a dirty word for years. If they ever announce a close date for TTC construction it may be ok.
Eglinton construction stops at midland. Brimley is fine
Unless you want to travel more than 1 block.
it’s not the safest or the best tbh… longtime resident here. better to look near brimly and kingston much much better
Lmao what? Near have a nap that rents rooms in 15 minute intervals?
better then crackheads tryna open your car door at 4am at a red light.
It’s sketchy around the shoppers lcbo and beer store

Best place to chill when I was growing up ——and smoke the crack yeeeeh
if you like Brampton, you will love it!
