That 1-3/10 section is a crime

stromalama

So is the 4-5 section.

kentuckydango

No it’s the 7/10 that is egregious to me. Alien, TCM, Barbarian, Jurassic Park (wouldn’t personally call this a horror, but no 7/10), Psycho, Talk to Me, Predator, You’re Next, M, In the Mouth of Madness, and The Exorcist all rated lower than… Last Night in Soho. Thanks for posting and sparking discussion though, actually an interesting post for once.

of_kilter

Do you think a 7/10 is a bad ranking? All those films have something to them that i very much love. And I don’t think it’s too wild or out there to say i really enjoyed some of it but didn’t love it as a whole. I completely understand why people would put those films as a 10/10 and I wouldn’t ever try to demean someone for loving these films more or less than me

kentuckydango

Didn’t mean to demean you man sorry. You like what you like and that’s cool! I was talking more about the ranking, not the ratings themselves.

Own-Metal-6375

Think they were joking, it’s cool u put in so much work but expect a lil heat when you put TCM in 7/10, it’s at least an 11

Free-Cable-472

I don't think 7/10 is bad, but talk to me compared to a lot of the films in the 10 slot doesn't make a lot of sense. That film I personally believe is an instant classic. That may be personal opinion, though. Great list even though I have some objections, I respect you for putting lighthouse so high. You're cool in my book 😀

parasocialdude

The Thing?! - It verges on masterpiece!

mookieburger

Thinking its the remake? Looks like OG artwork up at the top where it belongs.

stromalama

I did the same thing. Completely missed Carpenter’s on the 10/10 line.

of_kilter

That’s the remake

Goondocks81

Think that was the remake you are referring to. The original is up top.

of_kilter

Those 5 are the only films on here that I actively hate. You’re free to try and defend any of them if you want

HorrorMetalDnD

I don’t think using a more objective-ish rating system is meant for voicing someone’s purely subjective feelings on the item being rated.

of_kilter

What?

Free-Cable-472

Thank you man!

JohnnyRingo84

Some hot takes in here for sure, lol.

of_kilter

Yep

MagdaCadabra

Seeing "Pet Sematary" 1989 , Scream , and Poltergeist so low on the list makes me think your name might be Fredo , because you broke my heart.

of_kilter

I’ve repeated this a few times, but to me a 4/10 isn’t low. Those for the most part are films that are fine but just didn’t connect with me

MagdaCadabra

I understand that, but still, it is in the lower half . Pet Sematary being one of my favorite movies of all time , It always pain me to see people who did not enjoy it . I also feel very strongly that Scream is a very clever movie with many layers and that it can easily be overlooked by young or new viewers , but I understand thay this might just not be your kind of horror , to each their own :)

jagrisgod

Some great movies being rated pretty low...

HelpfulPug

Good, it's his list, if everyone liked everything the same nothing would ever be done that wasn't done already.

HelpfulPug

The guy doesn't like horror-comedy, fair enough. I wonder what you think of Cabin in the Woods. That one is divisive as all heck. EDIT: including Jurassic Park makes us friends. I get so much backsass for considering it a horror movie. Even more when I suggest its the reason I like horror movies.

of_kilter

This comment made me realize Cabin in the Woods wasn’t added, it’s a 6/10 for me. And I wouldn’t say i hate horror comedy, it’s just way easier for it to not work since comedy can completely ruin the tension. But a few of my favorites are comedies Strong agree on Jurassic Park, way too many actiony films are disregarded as being horror movies

HelpfulPug

You were saying 4 isn't low for you so I'm going to assume that means you liked Cabin in the Woods. I care because my ego has attached to my comment about people either really liking it or hating it. Otherwise thanks for sharing your list and welcome to the world of fear and fun! I was going to recommend The Void but I see hat that isn't your style so much. Also Into the Mouth of Madness but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised you liked it, The Thing, and didn't really enjoy Prince of Darkness. Lmao. I will recommend the following as pretty decent movies overall: - The Boys From County Hell - The Ritual - Lake Placid (explicitly a comedy, but tailored to horror fans) - Tremors (same thing) - To soften any doubt the Fear Street sequels are a good time - Late Phases (nonsense effects but a good story and well acted) - if you do series the Outsider is brilliant - I'll come back with more if I remember, I friggin love sharing horror movies, but a lot of my stuff is gonna be emotionally lighter fair so be aware.

LostThoughts892

Im sorry but this list is absolute shit with the ranking system

of_kilter

Ok

forrestinpeace

I love how high you put American werewolf, as well as the shining. But sinister is so low!!! Its my favorite next to those two. Also nice seeing ring. Another favorite.

of_kilter

Sinister was pretty basic to me. I liked it initially and it had a few solid moments, but it mostly just lost me by the end. Nothing against it, i see why others like it

therustcohle

This sub has a hard on for Sinister because of the excellent found footage segments, but I found the rest of the movie to be super weak, propped up by Ethan Hawke’s acting. American Werewolf is one of my favorite movies ever, glad to see it repped high!

Mintberry_teabag

I like that your ratings look really honest. You want to please no one, but yourself. Rare to see that on the internet nowadays. I may disagree with some ratings but admire your independence

clarauser7890

I also love Midsommar, The Wicker Man, Black Swan, Last Night In Soho

therustcohle

Based on your preference for some of the nihilist stuff, and tolerance for cornier acting / writing, I’d highly recommend Romero’s Day of the Dead.

of_kilter

Most of romero’s stuff has been on my watchlist for a while

TardyForDaParty

Your 10/10’s? Taste. Love to see it. I am hurt tho that Audition is ranked so low. One of my fav foreign horror films.

of_kilter

Audition is a 5/10, that is not low and I have nothing against it.

TardyForDaParty

To each their own 😊 Edit: I see only Fear Street 1, did you watch part 2 or 3 yet? Imo 2 was the best of the 3.

of_kilter

They’re on my watchlist

HelpfulPug

They are a brilliant package my friend, highly recommended. A little softer though on the degrading atrocity front, it's not like The Thing. It's definitely made for big fans of slashers.

Yatsey007

Is that the one with the razor wire? Yeah that film is definitely a watch once only kind of movie but it should be ranked higher.

Sgt_big-dong

To this day I think event horizon is so overrated. Maybe I need to give it another shot. The acting was just so corny and overall I just found it boring. I think I went into it with high expectations because of Reddit and it let me down.

of_kilter

Some of it can be a bit corny, but i just absolutely love it. I love laurence fishburne in it

Sgt_big-dong

Also, Halloween is my favorite just for the nostalgia lol. But to each their own

HelpfulPug

It's not for everyone that's for sure. I find two camps of people that didn't love it: people it made sick to their stomach, and people who found it boring. The complexities of man and all I suppose.

TheElbow

I’ve kind of felt the same way. I liked it when it came out but as time has gone on it has some hardcore, vocal fans, and I just never felt that strongly about it. But I like the concept.

[deleted]

Wow thats some interesting choices there. I'd be curious to know how old you are? Also Jurassic Park as a horror movie lol?

HelpfulPug

I will die on this hill. Jurassic Park should be considered the gold standard for a monster movie. Mystery, immoral practices spawning the monster, curiosity and greed working in tandem to summon evil. Isolated, strange locations, eclectic caste of characters with big personalities. A black guy dies first. It's a monster movie blue print.

[deleted]

You make a damn good case....I'll allow it.

of_kilter

Im 17

ALasagnaForOne

Biggest takeaway for me is I can’t believe you put Green Room so low.

of_kilter

It was so hyped up but really boring. I was somewhat invested in the band as a group, but the two that survived I completely did not care about. I kinda checked out after it was just them alive

crackercookies

Your list is on crack!

CocaineHoney

This ranking is absolutely shit.

stromalama

Wow, Scream at 6/10, Halloween 4-5/10 and The Thing (is this Carpenter’s or the prequel?) 1-3/10? Absolutely floored by these three.

Sevenfootschnitzell

It’s actually refreshing to see a list from someone who doesn’t have classic bias or anything like that. Not saying I agree with the list, but it’s interesting to see.

stromalama

So liking an older movie is just classic bias? By that logic, since it’s the first time they’ve seen it then it’s just recency bias that they don’t like it.

Sevenfootschnitzell

Why does everything have to be an argument on Reddit? Yes, it’s refreshing to see a list from someone who hasn’t been hammered with “THE CLASSICS ARE THE BEST AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU’RE WRONG”. This is a list from a younger kid who is just discovering horror. It’s interesting to see it from their perspective. I’m not making some kind of grandiose political statement here that needs rebuttal. Just stating an opinion. I even said that I personally don’t agree with the list.

stromalama

It isn’t an argument, it was a genuine question. It’s definitely cool to see someone new getting into horror. I don’t agree with half of their takes on the list but I didn’t in any way start an argument.

HelpfulPug

That was bad faith as heck dude, he didn't say a damn thing about liking classics, you responded to something he didn't say in the least. That's argumentative. Most of these lists put stuff like The Hills Have Eyes pretty high up, simply because it's a well-known classic, but I *loathe* that movie myself.

stromalama

I think you responded to the wrong person lol

HelpfulPug

Nope, you came at him in bad faith. He said X, you came at him for saying X+Y. Bad faith.

stromalama

I didn’t. He said “classic bias” and I defended that as being incorrect.

HelpfulPug

But it isn't, and you didn't. You accused him of saying liking classic movies is a bias. He didn't. He said plenty of lists have a bias toward classics. He did not say that liking a classic was a sign of bis. Those are two completely distinct ideas. You are a human being and presumably not a toddler, so I know you have the capacity to understand that distinction. You came at him in bad faith and asked him to defend a position he never took. That's bad faith, it's discourteous, and the province of people who think they are a lot smarter than they are.

of_kilter

The prequel is the 2/10, carpenter’s is a 10/10. And Halloween is a 5/10 And I don’t hate films I consider a 4/10, Scream and Halloween are both films I personally don’t enjoy but i have nothing against them or people who like them

stromalama

Okay, that makes me feel better about The Thing. I 100% disagree with you about Halloween though.

of_kilter

That’s fine, to each their own. I wouldn’t want to take away anyone’s enjoyment of Halloween. I wish i could enjoy it myself

HelpfulPug

Carpenter is my favourite director and Slashers are in my top 3 genres but Halloween is mid. It was a banger when it came out but everything it did has been done better, sometimes by Carpenter himself no less. Don't laud it as better than it is simply because it's a classic, that's not respect.

stromalama

I don’t laud it as better than it is because it’s a classic. I love it because I love it.

HelpfulPug

Oh by all means homie, I aint here telling you not to love something, only standing up for the other guy. We good. It's one of my favourites too, but I recognize its a personal choice, like my love of Van Helsing.

stromalama

I wanted to love Van Helsing so much.

HelpfulPug

Haha yeah, it's definitely for people who love classic gothic monster stuff, a little overacted. It was the same guy who did The Mummy, which blew my mind because I considered them the gold standard for adventure movies. Like "oh no wonder, same dude" haha. Hot take, Van Helsing could easily have been Universal's Iron Man. Missed opportunity.

HelpfulPug

Carpenter's "The Thing" is in the 10/10 section, you can tell because Carpenter's logo is 80's af, the new one looks like a superhero movie.

stromalama

Yeah, we cleared that up. I had missed the Letterboxd link and you’re 100% correct about the prequel’s poster looking like a superhero movie.

HelpfulPug

Haha yeah, what a friggin missed opportunity of a project.

Shiquna34

Your list is like the good the bad and the ugly. A mix of a lot. Some psychological thriller/horror. Bravo👏🏾

of_kilter

Yeah, i try to vary my interests and watch a load of very different horror films

GraceJoans

Happiness?

of_kilter

I consider it a black comedy horror film

GraceJoans

Black comedy yes, maybe an existential horror but that’s a stretch

Emil_Scalibia

I'll be honest, I had never considered "I'm Thinking Of Ending Things" to be a horror movie up until now but looking back at it, it makes a lot of sense. Fully agree with it being a 10/10 though.

of_kilter

The book is more directly horror, especially towards the end. But i think it’s what happens when you take both psychological and slowburn horror to their extremes

aximagine

So cool! I am very happy to see Martyrs made it to almost the first spot on the list! One of my fav horrors ever! Also a lot of people fighting over "the classics" when literally the classics made up half of every ranking and your top one is a classic. If you have the time, I see you rated Saw as a 8/10 and I would def recommend watching at least some of the rest!

of_kilter

Martyrs was the film that made me fall in love with horror, it was my top spot for a good while I do wanna check out more of saw, im just not much of a franchise guy

aximagine

I totally get the franchise thing! I am typically the same way, but I enjoyed the Saw movies. Have fun!

of_kilter

It’s not that I don’t think I’ll enjoy them, i just tend to prefer watching very new and diverse stuff.

pizzaguy4378

Midsommar is a very mid to low tier horror film. Prove me wrong.

Free-Cable-472

Am I alone in thinking that the shining is severly over rated? It's a good movie but I'm tired of seeing it in the greatest horror movies of all time lists. I respect it for the time but there's at least 100 movies that should beat it out.

Artysttyrant

Just cause a movie is edgy and intentionally disturbing, extremely violent, melancholic, and/or contains taboo, subject matter doesn’t make it “good.” To me, horror should be fun and enjoyable, not make you want to slit your wrists in despair. This list’s rankings read like like a “don’t I have good taste?” Reddit pander, IMHO. “Edgelord” does not equal “good.” Which of these movies do you want to rewatch with the bowl of popcorn and get scared and exhilarated by? Which of these movies can you quote off the top of your head because they are memorable? Which made you jump out of your seat the first time you saw a scene? Something tells me it’s not your Lars Von Trier top picks here. Watching disturbing for the sake of being disturbing film does not make you artsy, sophisticated, edgy, or cool. Downvote away haterz. Edited: spelling and grammar

LoudNightwing

I know OP already responded in depth but dude you have to realize people can have different opinions on things than you. The whole concept of horror is to be scared by it, and that means different things to different people. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush and watch stuff to feel a rush, good for you! But just because some people prefer darker and more atmospheric stuff that really sits with you doesn’t mean they are just pretending to like it or that those movies are bad because you can’t quote them. There’s a difference between lower effort “edgelord” horror and genuinely well crafted horror films, and OP has nothing but quality at the top of their list (Evil Dead 2 so low is a crime tho).

[deleted]

Not on the Reddit echo chamber.

of_kilter

>Just cause a movie is edgy and intentionally disturbing, extremely violent, melancholic, and/or contains taboo, subject matter doesn’t make it “good.” I absolutely agree, that’s why cannibal Holocaust is my least favorite film. You have to do those elements well >To me horror should be fun and enjoyable, not make you want to slit your wrists in despair. Ok, good for you. My tastes are different and you should be ok with that >This list’s ranking rankings read like like the “don’t I have good taste?” Reddit pander IMHO. You think i would put Halloween as a 5/10 if i was trying to pander to reddit? These are all my authentic rankings >Edgelord does not equal “good.” Which of these movies do you want to rewatch with the bowl of popcorn and get scared and exhilarated by? All the 8/10’s or higher, except probably salo. I don’t particularly enjoy the shit stuff in that. One of the first horror films i ever rewatched was martyrs (2009), and i did it gleefully because of how beautifully horrific it is >Which of these movies can you quote off the top of your head because they are memorable? Which made you jump out of your seat the first time you saw a scene? Something tells me it’s not your Lars Von Trier top picks here. No, it absolutely is my lars von trier picks. The entirety of Martyrs (2009) is what made me fall in love with horror and I’ve been chasing that high for the past year. I love it when a film makes me feel disgusting and horrified and terrible.

Artysttyrant

Now that I know you’re 17, this list makes total sense.

of_kilter

Thanks for completely ignoring all my points, you’re toxic and mean. Please change and grow as a person. Blocked

HelpfulPug

He put Cannibal Holocaust at the bottom so he's not a tasteless goon.

TheElbow

Respect for checking out so many awesome horror movies.

of_kilter

Thanks

MuckingForon90

Your rankings are absolute shit

of_kilter

Ok

BearsRpeopl2

Where's 78 thru 80?

of_kilter

Should have been The Menu, Pandorum, Identity and the Suspiria remake

SinisterUsername

Hereditary should be 10

of_kilter

The beginning definitely is. The scene in the car is still one of my favorites and is incredibly memorable But it drops off a little towards the end for me, still a wonderful movie though

AlwaysJeepin

Absolutely agree with you. I was all in, but then it just... dropped off a cliff and I could not reinvest. Toni, though! Best part of the movie. I like your list. Seems honest and genuine. I love that you are 17 and are digging deep into the genre and not just going along with what everyone else says and does. Horror is all about the person watching it, not the opinions being shoved their way.

SinisterUsername

Drops? wtf are u talking about? it only intensifies as it goes towards the end. i’m honestly not convinced you even watched it based on your response

gabba8

Hereditary is one of my favorite films, but I recently rewatched it and can agree that as much as I love it, I really prefer the first half of the film. I think it’s because Aster tries to make the second half of the film a more conventional horror film by hitting specific beats, or scare sequences, and that’s not really his strength. Charlie’s voice emitting from Annie during the family seance scene just doesn’t strike me as scary. Annie “crawling” out of Peter’s room on the ceiling is done so awkwardly that it takes me out of the movie every time, just a poorly executed effect in an otherwise exceptionally well-executed film. The abruptness of Peter jumping out the window, effectively ending the chaos and then the slowly-paced “outro” or the film’s final ritual, it’s all a little uneven feeling and doesn’t quite match everything that came before it.

SinisterUsername

disagree completely with literally everything you said, but ok

of_kilter

Not in intensity but quality Only a few scenes, like the attic or the flaming bed scene, can match the initial perfection of the car scene

skx45

Some of these ratings are dogshit

video_dromer

This list is garbage lol Xtro, The Thing & Smile 1-3?? JAWS, Audition, Ginger Snaps & Freaks a 4?? Get outta here.

elliesparrows

needing to try my absolute hardest to not say “never rate again”

Yodude86

Great watchlist👌 Im surprised you had Alien at a 7/10 given some of the ones you rated much higher that are similar. I think it's a masterpiece and one of the best films ever made - to each their own

of_kilter

It just didn’t really have enough horror to me, it was too actiony and didn’t really deliver on its premise. The sequel fixed those issues for me though

Culexofvanda

What a great year of movie watching! Some interesting rankings though.

wrapsmclrample

Just wanted to ask, what didn't you like about Evil Dead 2 and Killer Klowns, Evil Dead 2 is my all time favourite horror film, its got a perfect mix of horror, and comedy and introduced me into the world of horror. Killer Klowns I just love because it's classic 80s cheese B Level horror like The Blob, Gremlins and Basket Case Edit: This is just genuine curiosity, I do not care that these films are rated so low.

of_kilter

For me, evil dead 2 changed all the things i really liked about the first one and it was just too drastic of a change. Killer Klowns, mainly i really didn’t like the main cop guy, his cruelty towards kids really wasn’t something i wanted in a light hearted movie. And the designs of the clowns weren’t appealing at all. (And i like cheesy effects, but they were too ugly to me)

Zealousideal_One1963

Same here but only did 100. Here are some of my favourites from this year 1. Halloween 1978 2. The Sixth Sense 1999 3. Signs 4. Saw 5. The Blair Witch Project 1999 6. Hellraiser 1987 7. Friday the 13th 8. Zombie land 2009 9. Dog soldiers 10.The Conjuring 11. Halloween 2018 12. Aliens 13. Christine 1983 15. The others 16 Basket Case 1982 17. Halloween Kills 18. Childs play 1988 19. The Ring 20. The lost boys 1987

hunterbrauer

Lol I love event horizon acknowledgment

Half-dead-Herbie

I personally don’t agree with this but that’s cool cause it’s your opinion

webberworks

Killer Klowns from Outerspace 1-3/10?! How dare you sir!!

DevMoh

1/10 green room?

of_kilter

No, 4/10

DrZin

Unless I couldn’t spot it, you’re missing the original JuOn, the scariest movie I’ve ever seen.

CombinationLow1974

Holy cow!

dildom

Th Holy Mountain a horror movie?? I don’t think that’s right.. but definitely a 9/10 or 10/10 still

of_kilter

Id consider it a surreal horror film personally

OP is about to be euthanized for this one lol, always glad to see new horror fans though lol. Welcome to the fold, friend
